Dual Function Brush Rake

  • This is a dual sided brush rake I built so I can have one tool for removing brush and grading dirt or gravel. This is a simple design and I was able to acquire all the materials from my local steel scrap yards. I have found that a round pipe works much better than an I beam for grading because it does not gouge the ground.

I built one very similar, for the teeth I used 1" solid stock and blew holes on both sides of the 4" HW pipe, and then welded out. Works pretty well for light fine grooming, which was all I was looking for.
Great job on the build, going to add the smooth side to mine, thanks for the idea, not sure why I did not do that in the first place.
    Cheers brother!!!!!

Excellent idea, well made. I like the way you made it double sided, I mean that you can turn it upside down for leveling.

Well..... I know what I'm making tomorrow! I'm renting a ex this week too! Just for this, minus this awesome idea! U saved me a lot of rental time! 😀. I'm thinking a log, say 6 foot long, run my smaller bar saw through it, then run thicker flat stock, and make shift a bracket downwards, to hold it in place! It should work!

I started out using a log for grading. That’s what gave me the idea for this design.

I just use a railroad tie to grade but I like the idea of the rake on the other side. Nice job

Very cool idea and execution! What plasma cutter did you use to cut that 3/4" plate?

Thanks. I used the Eastwood versa cut 60. It was slow going but got the job done.

Thanks. It’s a Grizzly G9972Z bench mount. Pretty cheap as far as lathes go but gets the job done for now.

Hey brother, I've all the scrap a guy could want and I could put one of these to work....would you or have you made any changes? I love the idea I just wanted your thoughts before I start cutting a tacking.

Funny you ask. I have thought of a 2.0 version. I would use an I beam and weld the teeth to one side and then the pipe to the other side. This would eliminate the supports in the middle. You would need to make sure the I beam is tall enough that the bucket teeth and thumb grab correctly. You could probably use an 8” pipe also. My excavator is a 70 and I would like this thing to be a little lighter. Keep weight in mind based on your machine.

Nice work on the build! Where did you get the 6" pipe to 10" pipe template from? Thanks.

    • @jeremydiy

I searched Google for saddle joint templates and ended up finding a website that allowed me to enter the pipe dimensions and it gave me the diagram. Search “saddle joint generator” and you’ll find a couple websites.

I'm an insulator and I make these fishmouths on pipecovering daily. It is a rather simple layout I teach apprentices in the first weeks of school. Try googling unequal tee layout. All you need to know is the diameter of the two pipes.
