Yes and so was I! I watched from home, because I wasn't as fit as Simone. but really, this show lasted very long and I can only imagina what being pregnant does for your stamina. So I think it is even a bigger accomplishment, to sing this long show.
This band is exceptional, the complexity of their musical compositions, both instruments and vocals, is beyond compare with the exquisite contrast in sounds and styles. Always worth a good long, luxurious listen.

I love Floor just as much as the next guy but Epica is an amazing band in its own right You can go for Consign to Oblivion live at Zenith or Kingdom of Heaven if you want to hear more of Mark and Epica's heavier side or Rivers or Chasing the Dragon for something softer.
In my part of the world these bands and singers are not well known. But the situation is changing! They are getting new traction and recognition. I really love your music seen! On this side of the Atlantic(Québec) we do not have great bands in the symphonic genres.

@@Nikioko Savatage are not well known here. Trans-Siberian Orchestra is a less shun name. I will not even start with Magellan. Blind Guardian are known but not really big. Symphonic/Power are more on the poser side because of our Death/Black TRVE KVLT! I have seen Blind Guardian, Rhapsody, Nightwish but all in small venues. Therion is stil a secret over here!

I sound like a broken record in every reaction that someone touches this concert but really, it was really amazing. 3 hours of metal meets classical music with live orchestra, pure gold. Since you are an opera singer and you've already heard Sancta Terra with Floor i suggest you to check out the other Floor collaboration in Retrospect 2013, which is not even an Epica song, but it's an amazing performance from both singers, Stabat Mater Dolorosa. Would be interesting to hear your insights about that one.
Well I like the studio work of Delain - but a bit less their live versions. Maybe they should have invested in a bit higher recording quality for some live sets they did, as do Nightwish or Within Temptation or Epica.
About time!! Consign to Oblivion from Retrospect, or at the Zenith... those are soooooo good. Isaac, the lead guitarist has a growl like Jarko. The Retrospect show is crazy. Phantom Agony would be a killer reaction, again from Retrospect. They have always been incredible, live.

It was a great concert with the full orchestra. It was one of my most memorable live gig. Sancta terra is the song we're Simone sings with Floor. Also the new album is awesome, especially abyss of time.
Re: miking and sound mixing this performance, it was not only being recorded for a live DVD, it was also being livestreamed! That means that they needed to do one mix for the audience and a different mix for the people listening at home, since the live theater speakers are going to require a very different mix than for the people listening on their computers or headphones at home.
Hi Charlie, can you react to their Song Serenade of Selfdestruction from this concert? This Song is one the best, That I heard live from Epica. All the Guys of the band are really gentle, had a meet and greet with the band. And Simone is a fantastic singer and so beautiful.

Epica is the greatest symphonic metal. They've developed their sound so well and their new album (released one week ago) Omega is a masterpiece. it's heavy and balanced with a beautiful orchestra and choirs. But they'll make u headbang for sure.

I hate them getting mentioned as yet another symphonic metal band. I hate that stuff. Epica are so much more. They're symphonic melodic technical progressive blackened death metal. lol
This is an amazing song... double the amazing live, with the full might roaring back at the end! But what amazes me most in this is not the power, not the beauty of the vocals, nor even the massed orchestral forces (he who witnessed Mahler's 8th symphony, saw it all :)), but the exemplary coherence and flow of the songwriting. EPICA have developed from good to master songwriters over time, and this is such a great characteristic for a band of inquisitive artists who always have something to SAY. By perfectly-placed dramatic accents they make the listener pay attention to their intricate tales, along with headbanging and foot-tapping. That being said, I think you ought to be interested to take on their new album "Omega", that was highly anticipated through all the intriguing bits EPICA showed of the creative process. Could be the "biggest" production they ever made, and going by the early examples, the music is up to par! I was especially taken by their first single "Abyss of Time". Heard other singles too, but am refraining from hearing the rest of songs as they become available - I want to experience the full album! But yeah, "Abyss of Time" as good a taste of EPICA today, as any previously available.

What a lovely reaction to an epic metal band. Epica and Simone are able to stand out stunningly. They deserve that stage. You make some comparisons with Nightwish and Floor Jansen. I have my doubts if that is fair to do. Epica and Nightwish are both great band with their own musicians. On the other hand I fully understand why you do it. I have noticed that I did exactly the same. Nightwish (with Marko Hietala) have set the bar for me. Epica deserves the same kind of appreciation like Nightwish gets from me. It is difficult not to compare Nightwish with other (symfonic) metal bands. I do it all the time. It is due to personal circumstances that Nightwish has gained a very special deep within my soul and it feels like that I have become one with Floor. Epica is not Nightwish. Epica is a band that I simply appreciate more and more. A bit more rough, a bit more edgy. Their compositions and sound are overwhelming to me.They are like fine wine. You have to get used to them. Once you have started to get used to them, you can only appreciate what they are doing. Epica doing Epica things.

Ahhhh yes! One of Epica's best songs! I always feel that this should be the song (this, or Kingdom of Heaven - which is longer - or The Divine Conspiracy) that introduce people to Epica. Not saying Sancta Terra is bad or anything, but the duet with Floor takes a bit away from the band to focus mostly on Floor. DYU holds Epica's signature Beauty and the Beast-esque vocal contrast, the lyricism is well-rooted in Epica/Jansen's ethos (Epica has always been 'epic' in the sense of extraordinary perspectives like astronomy, religion and human morality, and mankind's place in the universe versus, let's say, Nightwish and Tuomas' more introspective and personal writing...until EFMB and HN anyway) and the elements of thrash in their sound. Also, since I mentioned it, Kingdom of Heaven?
Hi Charlie, yeah Epica is sort of the child of After Forever. Mark Jansen broke off from After Forever and started Epica. Floor stayed with After Forever and wrote a lot of the songs. So the two are related. A lot of After Forever is a combo of Floor clean vocals and male growling. Take care.
If you want maximum contrast you should check out Fleshgod Apocalypse, they have a classical piano and an opera singer as part of the group, and frequently incorporate classical music into their death metal..... just saying ;-)

I do not think that Epica get the attention they deserve from reactors. Nightwish is fine, but most of what makes them good is Floor. I feel that Epica is better all around than Nightwish, even if Simone might be slightly less talented than Floor.

Not saying Sancta Terra is bad or anything, but the duet with Floor takes a bit away from the band to focus mostly on Floor. DYU holds Epica's signature Beauty and the Beast-esque vocal contrast, the lyricism is well-rooted in Epica/Jansen's ethos (Epica has always been 'epic' in the sense of extraordinary perspectives like astronomy, religion and human morality, and mankind's place in the universe versus, let's say, Nightwish and Tuomas' more introspective and personal writing...until EFMB and HN anyway) and the elements of thrash in their sound.

Sensorium is a wonderful song, plus the video of studio recording :) I don't know why so few people ever mention it.

Hi Charlie, yeah Epica is sort of the child of After Forever. Mark Jansen broke off from After Forever and started Epica. Floor stayed with After Forever and wrote a lot of the songs. So the two are related. A lot of After Forever is a combo of Floor clean vocals and male growling. Take care.
If you want maximum contrast you should check out Fleshgod Apocalypse, they have a classical piano and an opera singer as part of the group, and frequently incorporate classical music into their death metal..... just saying ;-)

I do not think that Epica get the attention they deserve from reactors. Nightwish is fine, but most of what makes them good is Floor. I feel that Epica is better all around than Nightwish, even if Simone might be slightly less talented than Floor.
I've seen both bands live. While Nightwish is awesome, Epica is by far my favorite band.
I still dislike growling. Maybe interesting to find good examples of the godmother of Dutch female metal voices, Anneke van Giersbergen.
