The song is about a man and woman who are in love and facing their deaths. The man is dying and telling the woman to hold his hand because he is "her man" and that their love is eternal. He tells her to not fear death ( the reaper) as Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity, and 40,000 men and women join them every day. Near the end of the song, the man appears to her (this time in spirit) and again tells her to take his hand. She had no fear, dies and joins him in eternity. The "two now one" is their love which in their physical lives seemed to be only about the two of them transcending death and appearing again as spiritual, eternal.
I dont agree with the "two now one" part. I think that its they used to be two, now he is dead and she is left behind. The sadness is too much for her and takes his spirits "advice" and runs to him, and now they are together in eternity.
no you see after WWII the white bread world of 50s leave it to beaver was over because of armies of migrants. another 40,000 every day till the population quadrupled. that's what this song is about. don't fear that stuff because the world wasn't destroyed it was transformed and the loosers mostly just folded in. the reaper went around cutting open money bags but very few people. it is a euphemism for how lots of rich people get poor so someone else can trade them in for as many sorta richer than they were people as it costs to get it done
Liking your post. From what this woman says appears to me she's one of that generation that wasn't here then, and they know everything. Too bad she doesn't get it!
They played at my local state fair, one year, and they were just lovely! Great performance and interacted with the audience. They gave my little brother a drumstick.
I grieve for your loss but this is a song about suicide. If that was the case I am very sorry :( Any of the comments below were not from people who were around when this song came out :) Hehe I was a kid when I first heard it :) Peace and Love from Canada eh :) sorry :)
@@darthvaderthegamecat Let's agree to disagree:) I believe it's about a suicide pact between 2 lovers :) Only been listening to to song for some 30+ odd yrs but hey what do I know :) Peace and Love from Canada eh :)
Damn! I was 6 years old when this song came out and I remember my mom jamming out to it in her 67 Firebird. Great memories. They don't make music like they used to. Keep exploring and enjoy. They are classics for a reason.
The lead singer was just diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia that turned out to be none life threatening but he wrote this song at that time! The song is about the inevitability of death and the foolishness of fearing it, and was written when Buck Dharma was thinking about what would happen if he died at a young age.
still having a heart murmur is a serious condition my dad has it. by the by a heart murmur is a hole in your heart that's supposed to close up in the first six months of your life. If you still have it after you can die from it!
Its about suicide and "redefining happiness". Its all in the last verse: Love of two is one (they were two but now its only one left, he died) Here but now they're gone (they are not here anymore) Came the last night of sadness (He came as a vision) And it was clear she could not go on (she cant take it anymore) Then the door was open and the wind appeared (she opens the window/balcony door) The candles blew and then disappeared (the wind blows out the candles) The curtains flew and then he appeared... saying don't be afraid Come on baby... and she had no fear (he says that she should come to him) And she ran to him... then they started to fly (she jumps) They looked backward and said goodbye... she had become like they are (they are both dead) She had taken his hand... she had become like they are (they are now just like all the other dead people are, Rome and Juliet, the seasons, the 40 000 men and women everyday etc. They have come and gone, and now the are together in eternity.
this songs got many different ways of interpreting it. i look at it as a love song to death and not to fear death. something we all are going to go threw. death is natural so dont fear it. theres a alright break down of the song that expands on the song more. not perfect but pretty solid. the atrist has explained this song many of times though so you also have that. whats the actual meaning the artist was trying to convey and not what the listener is interpreting it as. most forget. you are there for what the artist is saying, the artist isnt there to for your interpretations of it at the end of the day. great reaction.
That song was dressing in an indirect way "the elephant in the room" suicide. Not just death that comes to us all eventually. This the repeated reference to Romeo and Juliet. Unfortunately even today suicide is a subject that we are loathe to address. But is important that we do. Especially with Cov19 issues. Depression and suicide rates among children and teens has skyrocketed and has become a pandemic of its own.
I remember when they was on tour a long time ago. They used to write quite many songs with supernatural themes and at the time there was an interview in a magazine where they said this song was about vampires.
I had the pleasure of seeing them live twice. My favorite BOC song and always will be. The beginning of Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994 and best version) features this at the beginning. Another band with this kind of vibe and depth you need to check out if you haven't already is Kansas.
The song is telling the story of a guy comforting his girl the best he can during the last moments . Letting her know that everything will o.k. and they will be together again someday , don't be afraid .
I've never seen a reactor talk about the first verse, which sets the tone for the rest of the song and every living being on Earth. "Seasons don't fear the reaper, nor do the wind, the sun or the rain, we can be like they are." Don't fear it if it's inevitable. My favorite verse is the last one, though.
i think This song is a reference to the Vietnam War and the Draft and the death of thousands of people ! in the 70s as a young man in the US or Vietnam death was all around you !! peace x
BOC is a dark, edgy rock band. They have songs about vampires, murder, monsters etc. None of it should be taken so seriously. It's entertainment. And - the ubiquitous cowbell comments are BEYOND tired.
It’s a suicide pact , she calls him & said that she couldn’t go on . She goes through with it , but he punks out ( fear put doubt in gun ) even though it was his idea
The song is from the perspective of a man who's committed suicide, who's singing this in reference to his girlfriend as he wants her to join him in the afterlife, so they can be together forever in death.
what he's saying is you ladies aren't in charge. because if you push me around you will be facing migrant pressure. and young couples who work for a living and armies of strangers that treatyou like a whore instead of bringing you flowers or child support.
I seriously wonder how many angst-ridden people were pushed over the edge to commit suicide after listening to this anthem in favor of suicide. "Romeo & Juliet...40,000 people every day" they committed suicide, why don't you?
This song is an invitation to commit suicide. In the spirit of Rock n roll devil horns, y'all. I do love this song, but it is wicked dark. She ran to "him" -- the grim reaper, not to Romeo.
This song is about suicide. Are together in eternity (Romeo and Juliet) 40, 000 men and women everyday (like Romeo and Juliet) 40, 000 men and women everyday (redefine happiness) Another 40, 000 coming everyday (we can be like they are) Came the last night of sadness And it was clear she couldn't go on When we heard this when it came out in 1976, everyone knew it was about suicide. You got it. This means you are not an idiot. And it means I am subscribing.
Hello India Reacts, ... just to let you know, I am very, very, very familiar with this song, and I have known what this song is about for more than 4 decades,,,,,, please note, this is a wicked, evil song, created with a beautiful melody to distract you from it's direct message!!! If you don't believe me, then, let's review the lyrics: "Romeo and Juliet, are together in Eternity, (WHAT DID ROMEO AND JULIET DO? THEY COMMITTED SUICIDE) and then it continues on: "40,000 men and women (do it) every day, come on baby, don't fear the reaper, come on baby, we'll be able to fly!".........that's clearly, blatantly, for sure inviting you to kill yourself! wicked vile song!!! Just sayin!! ...Thank you just the same though for your sincere, honest and true and amazing reaction!! Love you!!

nice
The older I get, the more relevant this song seems. We all fear "the reaper", but he's coming for us all eventually. The 1970s was an intense time.

This was played at the end of a memorial service for a friend of mine who was murdered. It was perfect.

The only song where the cowbell gets to shine! This song is in a category of its own. Solid perfection.

I was ten years. I never get tired of listening to it. One of my all-time favorites, so good.
me too!!!!

The song is about the inevitability of death and the foolishness of fearing it, and was written when Buck Dharma was thinking about what would happen if he died at a young age.
First heard this on The Stand miniseries, so fitting, one of the reasons it is still the best depiction of The Stand by Stephen King.
Eternal love. And an unfortunate death of someone young. But, when your time comes, it comes....
The reason the writer thought he was dying was he had some heart murmurs he thought was a serious condition.. Fact Not Fiction
still having a heart murmur is a serious condition my dad has it. by the by a heart murmur is a hole in your heart that's supposed to close up in the first six months of your life. If you still have it after you can die from it!
Don was told he had a dodgy heart. This was his way of coping. Forty-five years later, he's still standing and jamming.
This song kind of made me not afraid to die, at the end, I picture a Angel coming in the room carrying me through the night sky to heaven
Its about suicide and "redefining happiness". Its all in the last verse:
Love of two is one (they were two but now its only one left, he died)
Here but now they're gone (they are not here anymore)
Came the last night of sadness (He came as a vision)
And it was clear she could not go on (she cant take it anymore)
Then the door was open and the wind appeared (she opens the window/balcony door)
The candles blew and then disappeared (the wind blows out the candles)
The curtains flew and then he appeared... saying don't be afraid
Come on baby... and she had no fear (he says that she should come to him)
And she ran to him... then they started to fly (she jumps)
They looked backward and said goodbye... she had become like they are (they are both dead)
She had taken his hand... she had become like they are (they are now just like all the other dead people are, Rome and Juliet, the seasons, the 40 000 men and women everyday etc.
They have come and gone, and now the are together in eternity.
Nope - Wrong
TOTALLY WRONG. A simple Google search will show you that.
Correct
Blue Oyster Cult is one of the great rock bands. They still are out there. If you get a chance. You won't be disappointed.
Another classic. 'We can be like they are' was referencing Romeo and Juliet's tragic ending.
What I was told was the song was suppose to be a love song from the Reaper to Humanity.
