I don't care what the songwriter said.
The words are being communicated to a girl by the young man she is in love with [not by the Grim Reaper himself].
There are likely barriers preventing this couple from being together in all the ways they want to be, as well as forces that could separate them in the future.
He convinces her that dying together will solve their problems and enable them to enjoy a perfect, eternal, loving union.

The cowbell works for this song because it's mimicking a clock ticking, like the person in the song is running out of time. How about Mistress of the Salmon Salt or Dominance and Submission. Two more great BOC songs.

There was about 600 people or more, packed into a small room and they played for two hours, gave us a Hell of show and it was like 7 times louder than a normal concert, because it was a small room and my ears rang for an hour after the show, ha.

My favorite BOC song and always will be.
The beginning of Stephen King's "The Stand" (1994 and best version) features this at the beginning.
Some folks back when this was on the radio every day thought it was encouraging suicide but deep down it's a love song. Two is one.
Another band with this kind of vibe and depth you need to check out if you haven't already is Kansas.

Falling totally in love (Romeo + Juliet) is likened to Death (as the two individuals cease to exist, and the new entity "Us" is born.)
Lyrics center around a man beseeching his beloved to not let fear keep her love for him from flowing freely, as his love for her does.

Burning For You is fire...forgive the pun. Don't Fear The Reaper gets origin from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. I am sure you know the story. Believing Juliet to be dead, Romeo goes to her tomb where he sees her laying and kills himself by taking poison. However, Juliet was not dead, only sleeping...she wakes up sees Romeo is dead and kills herself with a dagger. The song is about eternal love that lasts even past death. The man is telling her the story of Romeo and Juliet and says "we can become like they are" and "we'll be able to fly" so basically there is nothing to fear.. I think this song will be eternal. First of all it is a great song, second Will Ferrell and that cowbell.

Eric was polite but preoccupied...Buck was super-cool. saw them once as Soft White Underbelly, too.

I interpret the lyrics as an already dead husband/lover reassuring his dying wife. The drawn out guitar at the end is the final breath, the trauma, the utter terror. But then the reassuring voice and calm music return. She has arrived. (But this does not necessarily imply an afterlife.) The song is the dying person's final experience.

So, thematically, this song can be interpreted in at least a few different ways, but the interpretation that makes the most sense to me is that this is a guy who has committed himself to this girl till death do they part and he is trying to get her to do the same thing for him. Musically, this song was made to sound like the popular '60s American Rock band The Byrds. 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻
