The Pools show was a hundred times better because I got to meet Shirley briefly before the show :) At the time, she'd had surgery on her vocal cords and some of the songs sounded better, strangely enough. I'd love to see video from that show. Even audio would be a blessing. It was at the Vanderbilt in the USA.

I’ve been watching the concerts of Garbage on youtube for quite some time and somewhere the remark was made that these concerts were sophisticated karaoke. A remark to which I have to agree : in this concert they may be using only a metronome. In the concerts of 2005 they use a background tape that is running and to which every musisian is responding. This is not the real type of live performance I got to know from the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple e.a. Every performance of these groups is different, while every performance of Garbage is exactly the same : if you play two concerts together you can hear that the same words come on exactly the same time without any variation.
wow they look so much younger, and a little unsure of themselves here. Esp Shirley taking in the crowd... till the music comes in. =) It's also really weird to see the guitarists is switched roles. In many of the other videos you see Steve using a Gibson, or similar "beefy" sounding guitar doing the rhythm work, while Duke would do lead with a Fender or Gretch. Yet here we see Duke sporting an SG while Steve rocks out with a Stratocaster. Both of which have Midi pickups installed to boot.
I agree with you - Shirley is singing pretty much in the same way as Noel Gallagher does i.e. with slow sustained words. This is no invention of their own as this is also typical of Vera Lynn : how to make a nice full sound without the technical backup of an echo chamber (which Vera Lynn didn't have).
