Actually she is smiling and even laughing on stage and in interviews. And it's quite lovely when she does that. She's just not smiling in this video during this song. Maybe she was smiling less in her early career. And actually it is a pretty grim and dark song. But newer live versions of this song can be more powerful and somehow more uplifting.
As a bass player myself i only can agree... always underrated, never really admired - but doing the job in the background. Honestly... I like it that way, no need to shine - just doing my "job".
this live performance is the best I have seen. the depth of emotion, the lyrics ,are as heavy as it gets .listen to it every day never tire of it ,utterly brilliant.
Enveloped and sealed in time. Not even these imposter 90s kids wannabes today understand that this music was imperial at the time. Eventually hip hop, r&b and dreaded Britany and boy bands took the lead. And even today parents let their kids takeover the music selections instead of showing them the way.
Garbage had a moderate level of success throughout the vast majority of their career, while still growing and changing things up from album to album. Just my opinion, but that's better than being a one-hit-wonder any day of the week. And their first album... what an amazing first album the likes of which aren't seen by many at all. If you mean "Why didn't they grow bigger after their 1st album?", I think they would have imploded and become that 1-or-2 album wonder. Much better to have a sustained, if not stratospheric career. ...and as a semi-professional Bassist, Daniel Shulman's interpretation of the studio version is just sex. Playing slightly behind the beat to create far more of a groove with the drums.
@@therealscarred2112 the bass is what makes this song so memorable...it changes it Into something else all together. I think that's what garbage so good. They had a sound that was very unique to them.
F*cking holy sh*t. Many years later this song still tears me apart and this performance probably will be forever its best version. I’ve seen Garbage live 7 times but one show will hold a very special place in my heart until my very last breath. It’s a 20 Years Queer show in Moscow in 2015 and I remember when they performed #1 Crush then in the same version I thought that my life was complete. I could die right there without any regrets because I would die a happy man.
LYRICS I would die for you I would die for you I've been dying just to feel you by my side To know that you're mine I will cry for you I will cry for you I will wash away your pain with all my tears And drown your fear I will pray for you I will pray for you I will sell my soul for something pure and true Someone like you See your face every place that I walk in Hear your voice every time that I'm talking You will believe in me And I will never be ignored I will burn for you Feel pain for you I will twist a knife and bleed my aching heart And tear it apart I will lie for you Beg and steal for you I will crawl on hands and knees until you see You're just like me Violate all the love that I'm missing Throw away all the pain that I'm living You will believe in me And I can never be ignored I would die for you I would kill for you I would steal for you I'd do time for you I will wait for you I'd make room for you I'd sail ships for you To be close to you To be part of you 'Cause I believe in you I believe in you I would die for you
It's written Loreley. It's a 400 ft high rock on the bank of the Rhine (and also a legendary beautiful maiden who committed suicide because of her unfaithful lover by jumping from the steep rock into the river, then becoming a siren who lures shipmen to their dooms with her hypnotizing voice; indeed many boat accidents have happened there due to the stong current and rocks under the water).
This song and garbage in particular reminds me of my high school girlfriend in 1995 and just cruising around in my car and going to parties and being intimate with her. Love this song!!!
I remember when I bought this album back in the 90s, never heard them and bought it purely because of the band name. Was not the genre of music I gravitated towards, but it was ear candy
Very good example that good music don't need no fancy show on stage... really like that stuff a lot. What a pity I never saw them at a live show back then.
Weekend is here fans, time for sharing good vibes & paaaarty, let music caress your hearts & sing along some more good old songs & never let any evil dare to harm you guys ❤🎉❤
Sitting in the transmission room at Kent Street Transmission in the Sydney City Telephone exchange in 1998 listening to Shirley Manson. The Technician behind me on the 5th Floor said “Turn that Garbage off?” I said, “No, I am not going to turn it off… And yes it is Garbage.. And Yes I love it mate! No. 1 Crush by Garbage...You’re not touching my Garbage”
The was the first song at my wedding reception, circa 2000. Dirty dancing and grinding mandatory. If you don't like it, look away. One of the sexiest songs of all time.
She isn't a damsel in distress, her vibe is more like, I'm going to follow you home and you won't know until I ring the bell! On stage she looks a little possessed but when she steps back from the microphone stand all you see is a cute girly girl!
One of the toughest love songs ever written.
I like how she never smiles.

Could say that about a lot of rock stars
@@artcosmos7 Pretty sure he means onstage
@@tomt6142 Probably. So for that matter it could be she isn't smiling throughout this whole concert.
She's Scottish... We never smile because of all the pain of Sunburn! 😄
Such an underrated band imo. From song writing to production and sound quality. Masterclass
Damn straight bro 👍
I can’t get enough of this song even 27 years later
Is it really 27?
your new crush puts this song on, turns the lights down, crawls on top of you...jfc what i'd give to relive that moment.
This might be my favorite song of the alternative rock era of the 1990's. It's SO haunting. :)
Absolute presence. Siren of this age.
The bass player gets no love from the camera 😐 even though the bass line is what drives this song
He's not in the band
И соглашусь и нет,здесь одно не может существовать без другого,очень гармоничное сочетание,вокала,игры инструментов,видеоряда,харизмы фронтвумен
It just how it is unless ur flea level
He's a minger that's why
As a bass player myself i only can agree... always underrated, never really admired - but doing the job in the background. Honestly... I like it that way, no need to shine - just doing my "job".
Her accent comes out more live than in the studio, love it.
Me too

They did, they were HUGE in the mid to late 90s, particularly Shirley for obvious reasons lol.

In my head and heart ♥
September 11th ........radios wouldn’t play them!!
Every time I hear this song, I need a cigarette.
Thing is, I don’t smoke.
non seulement j'ai 2 box de 30
I know the feeling. Glad I’m not the only one. I smoke but
It isn't just this song that makes me need a smoke, it's Shirley period
HAHAHA. Know that feeling.
Too funny, u b
One of the best love songs with lyrics and vocals like no other … thank you Shirley
Being pent up at home I have discovered another great band I was late to the party for
You're not that late! They're still active, and if you get a chance to see them live - they put on a hell of a show!
Same bro 🤟
That bass line makes the song that much more haunting and dark. This is the music of my late HS and college years. Where has it gone????

Thought they were pretty big
They were big in the 90s
They went in a bad direction with their 3rd album. Still love them though
Butch Vig ... you're a legend man.
Talk about a guy that has seen and done it all!!!!!
The best version of #1 Crush i've heard on youtube.

Such a fantastic song! Damn!
LYRICS
I would die for you
I would die for you
I've been dying just to feel you by my side
To know that you're mine
I will cry for you
I will cry for you
I will wash away your pain with all my tears
And drown your fear
I will pray for you
I will pray for you
I will sell my soul for something pure and true
Someone like you
See your face every place that I walk in
Hear your voice every time that I'm talking
You will believe in me
And I will never be ignored
I will burn for you
Feel pain for you
I will twist a knife and bleed my aching heart
And tear it apart
I will lie for you
Beg and steal for you
I will crawl on hands and knees until you see
You're just like me
Violate all the love that I'm missing
Throw away all the pain that I'm living
You will believe in me
And I can never be ignored
I would die for you
I would kill for you
I would steal for you
I'd do time for you
I will wait for you
I'd make room for you
I'd sail ships for you
To be close to you
To be part of you
'Cause I believe in you
I believe in you
I would die for you
I saw them in Seattle in 2018, and Shirley hit every note! Love this song so much!
i always loved the sound of this band's guitars.
Her Facial expresions are out of this universe. 2:40 I am in love.
Always loved the band, Shirley Manson is fantastic and Duke Erikson is one of my favorite guitar players
Those were the days. Shirley did wonders for my life back then.
The best song ever, the best singer ever.

She was really good, she broke through boundaries in a way as a female performer, that was interesting. Excellent music.

Unreal fucking voice ......very underrated !!!

I like the almost threatening vibe of her singing and the song in general
Hey I wish still in my late teens, my early 40s when this concert happened.
She isn't a damsel in distress, her vibe is more like, I'm going to follow you home and you won't know until I ring the bell! On stage she looks a little possessed but when she steps back from the microphone stand all you see is a cute girly girl!
