The funny thing is, the M14 actually excelled in the role of a DMR which is why it's still around to the point of being used during GWOT. Also, on the suppressor part: the increased chamber pressure was also an issue for the M16/M4 rifle for a while. (This is why a lot of dedicate suppressor hosts for them went with gas piston instead of direct impingement.) As the technology for suppressors increased, a lot of the problems did go away. This wasn't specific to just the M14, it was for all service rifles. My own personal experience was that a suppressor did help with recoil particularly if you were shooting spicier loads, but a 168gr generally hit that sweet spot for .308 ballistics in a DMR. I haven't really seen any need to handload .308 for the role of a DMR when plenty of factory ammo already gets the job done, I've personally had the best luck with Hornady's 168gr loads. Furthermore, handloading spicier loads in a .308 seems to be a value of diminishing returns, regardless of the gun you're using it in. For most applications of a .308, running Speer Gold Dot or Federal Fusion seems to be the way. (That is what I run in my AR-10, which I've set up as my general purpose "do everything" rifle.) I wouldn't say the M14 is a bad rifle, it's an excellent choice for a DMR, but for a basic patrol rifle or infantryman rifle there are definitely better options.
We were issued M14s bedded into McMillan stocks with Leupold optics as DMRs, and we hated them. The open receiver imvited in grit and the grease required for the bolt roller and other critical components collected this grit and became an abrasive sludge. The M14 is not an inherently accurate rifle, and making it into an accurate rifle for this role required bedding and fitting of components, which is maintenance intensive. Because of this, taking the rifles out of their stocks risked damaging the bedding and was therefore considered an armorer level task. Consequently, when they began to get sluggish and gritty, we couldn't technically field strip them for cleaning in the field. The rifles had to be present for weapons checks and such, but we left them in their soft cases in the back of the Humvee whenever possible. Most of their service in GWOT was banging around with the tow bar and cases of bottled water. They saw very little actual use. To the extent we had to carry them, the Marine with the M14 carried it strapped to his back in its soft case and carried an M4 with six mags as a primary to be useful in a gunfight. The M14 was the single most hated piece of issued gear we had. We eventually just took the optics off of it and put them on A4s as DMRs. Most of the guys who built the M14s as DMRs considered them finicky as well. It was replaced as soon as any other option was available; as a sniper it was replaced by a bolt action and then by an AR-10 variant, as a DMR it was replaced by variants of M4 and M16, even just scavaging the Leupold off of it and replacing it with a standard off-the-rack service rifle in 5.56 was preferrable because we could at least keep the M16s running. The Mk 12s and M110s were the most coveted pieces of gear everywhere they went specifically because it meant you didn't have to deal with the M14.
The only reason they got used in the DMR role is the US couldn’t give them away and they were still in inventory and they got pulled out because at the time there wasn’t really anything the us had that was viable to fill the role as a dmr
In the mid 70s the M14 was in the ships' armory and was used for Shark watch, NucWeps transfer, and....REPEL BOARDERS . I had one in my hands for armed security and felt well armed .
That was the go-to rifle for ship-board watch standers in the Navy back when I first joined. They were basically hand-me-downs from Vietnam... 20 years after the fact. lol OMG, what a big heavy rifle. So glad we went to the M4.
@@kennethschlegel870Yep. Twenty years in the Navy and fifteen in MSC loved seeing the M-14 still being used. I seriously doubt an M-4 5.56 has the umph to deliver a projectile and shotline for UNREP. I’ve seen the M-14 version struggle and fail when firing into the wind several times
Definitely, I was on the P&D line and watched the gunners mates aim 45 degrees offset to the supply ship and still miss a few times. You almost had to shoot in front of the ship and let it drift back.
Love it! Blackhawk down was the movie that really turned me on to the M1A and I've always wanted one. This might sound like a sin to some but I always wanted an scout and then get a sage international chassis for it :D
I have a Poly Tech M14 and I love it! It's stupid accurate and I actually have zero issues with strip clips. However, out of 8 mags 2 of mine have feed issues for some reason. Also, I great friend of mine who unfortunately passed away recently carried an M14 in Nam and he loved it. He said they rarely changed mags, they used the strip clips. Love your videos and again, I absolutely love your pup!
You get a pass, but if we called it a "gun", we would have to recite: "This is my weapon, this is my gun-This is for *******, this is for fun." Then we had to drop and do 50.
Great review mate. A lot better than most. I do love a German Shepard. I've had 2. Both called Sheba. I met one raised by a German. I had to lean a couple of German commands. But it was soooooo authentic.
The 14 was loved by the USMC .it had the unsurpassed accuracy over the AR. And the power to penetrate jungle foliage. And reliability was superior over the AR platform. On a side note I do enjoy your videos.
The accuracy part is not true. (Nor is the reliability) The AR Is much more inherently accurate and is easier to keep accurate. Ask any old high power armorer about keeping M14s match level accurate. Wood to metal, complicated bedding, etc. Approximately no one shoots m14s in service rifle competition. Despite the 308 being better than 556 at the 600yd line. The ar is more competitive despite its caliber!
First time I picked an SKS I was very surprised how thin, short and light they were. I always imagined them as very comparable to a regular M14. Needless to say, despite all my attempts at liking the M14, I’m just amazed at how easy the SKS is to run around with. Sorry M14!
Someone else commented on the size on my sks video but yeah it's much smaller than media might have you think. I really find the sks to be super ergonomic. Not that the m1a here was bad, like I had fun out with it for sure. But between the two, I'd pick sks for sure
The singular reason I like the M14 is a brief appearance in The Hunt for Red October (my favorite film). That guy standing watch on the unnamed US frigate just looks so cool without even trying.
Love my M1A, just wish ammo and magazines were much cheaper. I like how you mentioned how the rail gets really hot after shooting, not many reviews talk about that issue. Another thing with that is the mirage effect is super noticeable as well which messes up the soght picture. I ended up taking out the rail and replacing the stock handguard with a regular handguard.
There is a really good book that covers the history of US infantry rifles written by Edward C. Ezell titled "The Great Rifle Controversy: Search for the Ultimate Infantry Rifle from WWII to Vietnam and Beyond". It covers the whys and hows about each rifle that was selected for US service over time up through the adoption of the AR platform of rifles that are now in very widespread use today.
I wear glasses too that's funny you push your glasses back before you take a shot. I'm glad to see your fingernails looking good . keep it up love your videos
The M14 was well liked by the guys that used it. It was replaced by egg heads in Washington by the m16 and that gun was hated. It’s interesting to see kids with fantasy about the past. lol
Folks on You Tube love to talk shhh about this gun, and they DON'T understand that an infantryman doesn't have the luxury to carry a bunch of tools to take apart his firearm for cleaning. So they have to be engineered with a design that has this in mind. The field strip has to be: -simple to a point that a child could do it -all you need is your two hands and no additional tools -And it needs to come apart in less than a minute and get reassembled. Why? Because in case you are being shot at, you can put it back together and return fire immediately. ALL service rifles have this trait, when issued by an Army. All, EXCEPT the AR-15/M-16/M-4.
There is one thing you did forget the Marine Corps actually dropped the M16 and picked back up there M14's until they were made to pick them back up, and some of the Marines hid there M14's.
Yeah I mention that a bit later in! People were absolutely clinging to their m14s so while there was issues with it, definitely not entirely hated. You'll hear split opinions for both guns. Neither was necessarily great and I don't think it helped that so many people were being drafted into a war they didn't want to be a part of
I got a M1A Scout Squad in a polymer Archangel stock with Mlok rails, adjustable stock, AK ribbed pistol grip. Even got it cheap for $1200. I took off the picatiny rail and went with a regular hand guard cause of the heat issue when not using an optic, swapped in a A2 flash hider and a fixed hooded front sight that attaches to the gas lock. Hope to see a mini 14 review at some point!
In spite of its weight and length the M1A is not necessarily a bad rifle! It is reliable and more accurate than the M16! And the way that you handle it, and can shoot it, clearly shows that you really know your business!! More power to you!!!!
I allways liked the look of it. Maybe if it was modernized a little bit and used as a dmr? Like the dragunov in the Russian military. I dont know alot of these things but it definetly came to mind. Doesent the US military do something like that with the m14 in some units atleast?

Great rifle, great video!
I have the Springfield M1A Standard with 22-inch barrel. Installed a mount and scope and love plinking at 200 yards with it.
The owner of this one had a scope on that I took off for the video. Really nice with it, though, and retained 0 after I put it back on just fine!
What scope mount do you use I have bad luck with the Springfield Gen 4 mount
@@TexasNationalist1836 I used the aluminum springfield mount, it is crap and loses zero often. I'm gonna order the Sadlak mount.
@@huntersmillie00 the sad lack mount is double the price I’m still wanting to try the basset mount
It gets a lot of hate. But we all want one.
I really have an appreciation for milsurp type weapons. Sometimes we dont get guns cause they're good🤷🏼♀️
In the mid 70s the M14 was in the ships' armory and was used for Shark watch, NucWeps transfer, and....REPEL BOARDERS .
I had one in my hands for armed security and felt well armed .
Well armed, on a ship? A cutlass is all you'd need to repel boarders.
I went to Vietnam in '67 with an M-14. Shortly was given a M-79/1911 combo. Later got an XM-177E2 Loved both. Total of 22 years and out.
That was the go-to rifle for ship-board watch standers in the Navy back when I first joined. They were basically hand-me-downs from Vietnam... 20 years after the fact. lol OMG, what a big heavy rifle. So glad we went to the M4.
Still a few M-14s kicking around on ships as line throwing guns for UNREPs
Phew thanks for the pass cause I definitely can't do 50 pushups
I didn't serve but I immediately thought of that scene in Full Metal Jacket.
This is a bucket list gun. Im trying to save up for as a Christmas present. I love everything about it.
Great review mate. A lot better than most. I do love a German Shepard. I've had 2. Both called Sheba. I met one raised by a German. I had to lean a couple of German commands. But it was soooooo authentic.
M-14 shoots a full sized projectile that will knock you foe down and dare him to get up!
This is our Boondock Ballistican. There are many it, but this one is ours!
The 14 was loved by the USMC .it had the unsurpassed accuracy over the AR. And the power to penetrate jungle foliage. And reliability was superior over the AR platform. On a side note I do enjoy your videos.
The accuracy part is not true.
(Nor is the reliability)
The AR Is much more inherently accurate and is easier to keep accurate. Ask any old high power armorer about keeping M14s match level accurate. Wood to metal, complicated bedding, etc.
Approximately no one shoots m14s in service rifle competition. Despite the 308 being better than 556 at the 600yd line. The ar is more competitive despite its caliber!
awesome video, from my understanding, the G.I.'s liked the M-14 because the 7.62x51 would go through the jungle and trees
I don't know but I've been told, Boondock Balli's youtube gold!

M1A Scout with the composite stock is freaking magical.
A well executed video. Opinions backed with reasons. Well done.
An oldy and heavy but a classic ! Ideal for battles beyond 500 yards. it's like the muscle of rifles.....
*the muscle car of rifles. - Colion Noir
I love book suggestions!!! Thank you!
I wear glasses too that's funny you push your glasses back before you take a shot. I'm glad to see your fingernails looking good . keep it up love your videos
I Love Love Love your channel!! Im using a Mini14 similar in operation, & rock &lock mags. Id Love me some M1A!
Ahhhh thank you so much. Someone else commented about the mini14 and thought it was actually better, haven't tried it though so I can't say
classic rifle, natural look, acknowledges 4 inches is a lot 10:48. subed
Hahahaha you'll be happy to know in my "size does matter" video, I very much advocate how smaller is better
I have the "loaded" model from S.A., love it. I used it in local match/league shoots for years.
The M14 was well liked by the guys that used it. It was replaced by egg heads in Washington by the m16 and that gun was hated. It’s interesting to see kids with fantasy about the past. lol
Come for the guns, stay for the german shepherd.
Some good fun,,,solid information,,,a bit of live fire and great energy, your channel is going places.
Great video thanks man. You have a good channel, good for you. Also stop applying pressure to inappropriate places.
No bad touch
I'm not an M14/M1A fan, but I couldn't not watch this. Keep up the good work.
"Well well, what have we got here? A comedian! Private Joker!" Sorry you had issues with that beast. Give me the M1 Garand over that any day.
I will attribute the issues to myself but I will say, 0 malfunctions on a garand to date!! Granted I don't shoot either of these often lol
The name caught my attention and gave me flashbacks to the Boondock Saints for some reason, great movie
Brass facts sent me, I can no longer enjoy slow motion ballistics jelly shots. Lol thanks for that
Hahahaha they're still fun to see! I'd love to one day do a video breaking down how gel blocks are analyzed
The 18" M1A was my favorite configuration, but wound up falling in love with the FAL no matter how hard I resisted.
Love that carry handle👌🏻
Lol I chopped mine for the Rhodie larp.
as a stg-58 owner I understand,did want the m1a for a while though
I'm so happy women like this actually exist, now I just gotta find one 😂
Beware of Psy-ops.
@@digitaltango913 Riiight... FUCK 😭
Just found this channel. I'm hooked! You're on your way girl!
Thanks for the information. I was wondering about this firearm
Folks on You Tube love to talk shhh about this gun, and they DON'T understand that an infantryman doesn't have the luxury to carry a bunch of tools to take apart his firearm for cleaning. So they have to be engineered with a design that has this in mind. The field strip has to be:
-simple to a point that a child could do it
-all you need is your two hands and no additional tools
-And it needs to come apart in less than a minute and get reassembled. Why? Because in case you are being shot at, you can put it back together and return fire immediately.
ALL service rifles have this trait, when issued by an Army. All, EXCEPT the AR-15/M-16/M-4.
😮 this gun...those helicopters...that song
There is one thing you did forget the Marine Corps actually dropped the M16 and picked back up there M14's until they were made to pick them back up, and some of the Marines hid there M14's.
Yeah I mention that a bit later in! People were absolutely clinging to their m14s so while there was issues with it, definitely not entirely hated. You'll hear split opinions for both guns. Neither was necessarily great and I don't think it helped that so many people were being drafted into a war they didn't want to be a part of
It makes you a Patriot!
I love my M1A Scout Squad no complaints here it’s a go to war Rifle 😊
Hope you’re keeping the youngsters involved and informed.!. Keep it up y’all
Ah yes... The "You'll bend the op rod" myth.
To be fair, even the CMP warns owners of the M1 Garand not to use loads beyond 50,000 CUP and having bullet weights more than 172-174 gr.
Looking good Jesse .... looking good ... a lot better than the black pajamas and cone hat.
I just wish non starved armies had milsurp in my size😓
In spite of its weight and length the M1A is not necessarily a bad rifle! It is reliable
and more accurate than the M16! And the way that you handle it, and can shoot it,
clearly shows that you really know your business!! More power to you!!!!
This channel is awesome 👏
I just subscribed to your channel about 2 weeks ago and next thing you do is my fav gun! OMG! What a treat! :D
Aahhh good timing then! Let me know if there's things you want to see covered! I'm always happy for suggestions
One of the coolest worst guns ever
Probably the best way to describe it
they really aren't that bad. the fact it functions puts it way past many other firearms for the "worst" claim.
Just because it works doesn't mean it's good
I allways liked the look of it. Maybe if it was modernized a little bit and used as a dmr? Like the dragunov in the Russian military. I dont know alot of these things but it definetly came to mind. Doesent the US military do something like that with the m14 in some units atleast?
Mp7 is the coolest useless, unreliable gun ever made. Idiot hk decided having 2 gas systems in the gun was smart. Oh and the gun breaks if one of the systems fail.
cool! My husband would respond Vektor R4 (South African Galil)the prom queen and rugged adventurer had a love child but the M14 is number 3 in his battle rifle list!
Loving your channel, you’re getting better and better my friend. Keep it coming 🙏😊
Thanks so much!!
So just as Paul bows out, Jesse steps up.
A new favourite guntuber.
That man was an absolute legend. A void that no one will be able to fill. Thankful his content and legacy will still live on and hopefully continue to teach and inspire
I was lucky enough to meet Paul at a pizza place where I live in Oregon. He invited me to sit & join him & his crew to share their pizza. He was such a genuinely nice person & he gave me an autographed playing card that he had shot with a pistol earlier that day.
US OD Green was the best camo for Vietnam. Even the NVA and PLA adopted it.
