The South African R4 version has a bipod. Super handy. Eliminates the tension around rifles falling over. Includes wire cutter. It was super accurate out to 500m. Also came with a 50 round mag. Short and long butt stock variation. Solid in battle. I loved mine. The stronger I got, the lighter it became, though truth be told you can't handle it like the M4 and it's cousins. Great review.
@patrickoberem9109 Thanks for the comment, love hearing about real world use!!! I 100% believe it made it better, I wish the Century built guns came with them, or at least if the bipods weren't so expensive.
Love the original Galils! My SHTF rifle is a 13" Galil ACE gen-2 in 5.56 converted to a SBR. Although I prefer 7.62x 39, 5.56 ammo & mags are every where.
I always loved the Galil, since the late 70s. A gun store in town, on the second floor of the Levi's pants store, would order a Galil for around $800 (about 1977 or so). My good buddy got an UZI from them for $700. And they had a MAC 10 in their display case, for $600. So Cal was a great place to grow up in, in the 70s
Century Arms sometimes gets talked down but they work. The only one I have is a Romanian SAR-1 (AKM). It came with a mean trigger slap but I eventually fixed that with a ALG trigger which is buttery smooth and light compared to what Century put in it. Being a Magpul fanboy I swapped the wooden furniture out with theirs and of course use their mags too though I still have several old East Bloc surplus mags as well that work fine. Also, the property you're shooting on looks amazing. I have to drive a half hour outside the city I live in for a decent outdoor facility to shoot at.
I think every company has their nuances. There's quirks every where you look. Its just a matter of what you're willing to put up with. I've been very fortunate be able to shoot here. Going to and paying for range time can be so difficult and restrictive
In 1986 the Alaska State troopers did a torture test trial way up in Fairbanks to get data on the best choice for a patrol rifle, i think this article was in Handgunner magazine. Word got out and several companies sent their rifles in to be included in the cold weather testing. As i recall the entries were AR-15s, Mini-14, a Valmet RK-63, a Springfield M-1A, HK-33, HK-91, 5.56 & 7.62mm Galils (Magnum Research, IDF kits built on their receivers) and a 5.56 FNC. The first night they got up there, they just left all the rifles outside overnight exposed, temps went down to -20F. In the morning they took the rifles into a tent that was sbout 45-50F, let them all slightly thaw for 45 minutes, them took them back out and tried to shoot them. Only 4 of the rifles functioned, the Valmet, FNC, and the Galils. The AR bolts were completely locked up and could not be charged, the Mini 14 and Springfield could be racked but when the trigger was pulled thr hammer fell so slowly that it would not ignite the primer. That is interesting because this was widespread problem in Korea with Garands when they got cold. The HKs were hopelessly locked up, and apparently the charging handle on the 91 broke off. The 4 rifles that operated had a few mags run through them, the FNC hiccuped a few times and needed a slight gas valve adjustment but all functioned perfectly. They were cleaned with CLP after shooting but NOT lubricated. That night, these 4 rifles were taken outside and each had a quart of water poured into the actions, then they were left on the ground, chambers empty, hammers de-cocked, each with a full mag. Temps dipped down to -40F that night with wind chill. The next morning, they went out, picked them up off the snow and tried to rack the bolts and fire them. Only the Galils functioned, no problems - each had 2 mags put through them. The FNC couldn't be charged, they did not mention what malfunctioned on the Valmet.
An original Galil AR223 was the fifth rifle I ever bought new. I believe it was an Action Arms import. Sold it for a pretty penny about 8 years ago. The LH safety was way stiff on mine also.
30 years ago, I almost bought the 5.56 version of the Galil that was based on the AR platform. The reason I hesitated, was based on parts and accessories availability.
Got a Golani as one of my earliest rifles. Was lucky with timing and got one just after they switched to the Caspian receivers that came out much better than the ORF ones they used initially. Awesome rifle. Re: the ambi safety, I shoot lefty and love it. The trick is to use the first knuckle on your left index finger for leverage. Definitely too stiff to get enough purchase with your right thumb.

I picked up a Galil ACE G1 in 5.45x39. I have quite a few AK74 pattern rifles and a crapload of ammo. The ACE is about the nicest AK version I've handled. Just about as nice as the Sig 550 with some features that I like better.
FAL's are awesome, but they don't like sand. Maybe they did play with the gas regulator too, bad kids. That's a Galil AR pattern the ARM pattern had the bipod & bottle opener & there was the SAR, the sbr/smg pattern
I have heard but have no way to confirm that the FAL liked to be fired "wet". if that is true, using it in a desert would cause issues. I believe the AK will run anywhere, anytime. The Galil is like the best of all worlds! Great video.
