  • This is part of an ongoing series where I demo guitar related gear in a condensed (close to) three minute format.
In this video, I am comparing the iconic Gretsch G6120 to a new, up and coming contender -- the Eastman T58V. A few points to note: First, the Gretsch G6120 comes in at retail around $2,400 and the particular model that I am playing has the Gretsch Filtertron pickups. The Eastman T58V comes in at retail around $2,000 and comes with TV Jones pickups.
The fretboard and neck on the G6120 is a little thinner, which makes for a faster play, while the fretboard and neck on the T58V is a wider, which allows for more articulation because of the additional space.
    The songs I am playing:
    1. "Mystery Train" sort of... I'm basically just playing with the main riff
    2. "Villa" by Chet Atkins
    3. "Misty"

The varnish definitely gives Eastman an identity in the guitar world!

I preferred the Eastman on the bridge and middle positions, and the Gretsch on the neck. Overall I felt like the Eastman was sweeter and more articulate, and the Gretsch had a little more depth and dimensionality - the Eastman brings the tone right to your ears, the Gretsch kind of envelops you in it.

To my ears the Eastman is the clear winner. The whole thing sounds less compressed. Like the sound still has more room to bloom. It sounds more bouncy.

Hello!! Good demo! Do you think the Eastman is capable to do Neil Young? What about the feedback with distortion or fuzz?

Another awesome video! How do you think the pickups compare? I have a Tennessee Rose with the HS Filtertron. I am considering changing them to one of the TV Jones pickups. I play mostly Chet stuff and from what I've seen online on forums, it seems to be split between the HS and the TV Jones classic or Ray Butts full fidelity. Do you have an opinion on that or maybe you have tried changing the pick ups? I'm a student and have a very limited budget so I'm not in a position to try out all the pickups haha. Anyway, thanks for another great video!

Is the Eastman better value for being about $800 less in cost ? I know its a video but they sound pretty close. Eastman maybe a bit fuller. Nice demo.

The Eastman is far woodier and more natural. The Gretsch is much more focused and compressed. The Eastman sounds like an old Gretsch.

The Eastman has a warmer Jazzier tone. Gretsch is Gretsch; don't fall asleep on Eastman...........
