I have one bought new at the time, 1971 with original speaker cabinet bought new at the time for $400. Have the original Big Muff Pie bought at the same time. Also same year Les Paul Cherry Sunburst. That cost $398.00 then. High School band. Fond memories.
Lou Reed (Velvet Underground era) used to put these bad boys almost full volume. Check out Sister Ray live at The Boston Tea Party to hear this thing roar.
oof, roar is a stretch, more like pierce my ears with completely out of tune trebly honk. Maybe his singing would have been less tone deaf if he had spent more time with an in-tune guitar
A friend of mine had the combo version of this. It sounded great if you stood in front of it, but when you got off to the side you couldn't hear it very well at all.
An interesting detail: the Sunn Solarus is a Dynaco MkIII ultralinear hi-fi power amp (with transformers from Dynaco) with additional gain stages and reverb for use with guitar. I've rebuilt MkIIIs for hi-fi use, and you can get 60-65 clean Watts continuous from them with transient peaks out to 120W. Chuck the Groove Tubes and get some SED/Winged-C 6550Cs or Genalex reissue KT88s! :-) These OTs were originally made for KT88s.
Hi, dont know if you still check these messages but I totally dig your review. I have a Solarus 2X12 combo with the EL34 tubes and I replaced some caps and resistor and got it going but was having that problem with the volume as you. If I put it at 1 super loud, if I ran it at 3-4 it was like having a normal amp around 8 so I put in a resistor on the volume. Its a little more tame but not like a normal amp, at 2 its still fairly loud, anyways thanks for the video.
Damn I wanna try a Sunn so goddamn much, would love to have that Greg Anderson tone going. Definitely wouldn't suit my house though, with paperthin walls and the neighbours right next to me, i doubt I'd be able to get it past 1-2 without getting noise complaints, at least from what I've heard now. Nice demo by thhe way, woulda liked to see you nail that doomy Greg Anderson tone, the man who popularised the brand so much, nonetheless, still a nice description followed by a decent playing session
I've got the same head, and i run it through my 1966 8X10 Cab. glad to see that there are still sunn heads out there. sounds great btw! How much did you pay for yours?
Well ummm, do you have the reverb fucking cranked? Because it sounds like it is wayyyyyyy to much verb. Can you record a video where you're just driving the amp itself with no verb or pedals? I want to hear what kind of natural distortion comes out of the tubes... Everyone on youtube keeps putting a big muff on there for distortion, JUST TURN UP THE AMP AND DRIVE THE TUBES!!!

Soo punchy in tone. Nice amplifier
Love my Solarus. It's so LOUD!
I'm watching this because its still one of the only demos. I was looking at this for a doom/stoner tone on the cheap. Love the tones!
nice playing

Hilarious vid! What an insane head.
I have the exact head with original 2x12 cab. Works great but need some freshening up..
Good sound. Can you do an update of this? With better camera and mic?
Great and useful video. Thanks!!

MAXIMUM VOLUME YIELDS MAXIMUM RESULTS
Is that a Heritage Paul? What are the pickups on it?
bluesman2050 Duncan 59s I thunk
Nice job and great sound! My Solarus sounds great with a Gibson Lucille plugged in...a lot of depth and fullness and YES it is LOUD.
I like the sound it makes when you tap your hand on the strings in between chords. Very r&b.
Nice Playing on that GEETAR JETRO---BUT THOSE HAND SLAPS ALL THE TIME ARE FRICKIN' ANNOYING AS HELL!!!!!!

Very interesting video - never thought I'd see someone with a Heritage doing a demo of a Sunn Solarus.
how loud is it? do you know perceived watt output or something this is a serious question please respond thanks
"...I have heard that if you have it set wrong it'll shock the SHIT out of you..." Well played, sir.
The Les Paul is made by The Heritage. If you go to the page, I have a new full review of it :)
Which Sunn combo is the one that sustains forever, especially when one is on the neck pickup?
sunn beta lead
Nice review! How much did this head run you? Any chance we could hear this with a fender jazzmaster?
thanks
WOW. Sunn ftw!
Are those KT88 Power Tubes?
What are the lamps inside for?
Yea... that rules... thanks for commenting... Ty...
I love this demo mostly for your commentary. Great sounding amp though!
great playing
Hmmm. Unless that muff had new reissue knobs put on (which...hm. I kinda doubt) doesn't appear to be any older than maybe 2005-6. 🤷🏻♂️ rad amp though
Man i was close to open my pants when i saw that Les paul..
The Accutronics spring tanks that Fender amps (mostly) use for reverb cost about $20, haha.
Awesome!
Thank you :) and I think a new look at this amp in HD is in order :-0

nice playing man
Les Paul? Headstock looks like a Heritage. They're great guitars... I've got one!
Great sound and review, I wonder what that thing sounds like at a 10!
And that riff at 5:25 blew my mind! What is that from?
@happyburial take a look at my sunn spectrum 11 on ebay
"i dunno if anyone gonna watch this... probably not" @2797 views
YES IT DOES SHOCK THE SHIT OUT OF YOU!!! LOL!! I learned this with my '69 Sonaro!! LOL!! Bit my finger pretty good!!

That's a DOOM METAL TONE!!!!!!! Awesome video.
