I did a 42-day round trip from Australia to Hong Kong and back in 2013. I absolutely loved it and hope that one day I will have the money and right living situation to be able to do something like it again. My one regret is that I never got to take a sauna. I also wish I had explored the engine room more, but I was too nervous I would somehow end up in the wrong place and get in trouble. Which was unlikely because the crew guys are all incredibly friendly and accommodating. Filipinos are pretty much the nicest people in the world.
Sailed on many ships with a Filipino crew.... They are really nice folk. You can party with them and a have a great time: In the morning, all due respect is back....and no hint of the night before...& no conflicts ever. The worst crew to sail with? I'd rather not say here, if you don't mind.
Hello 1983, from the island in Scotland. This is brilliant. Thanks for posting. I'm 65 and always intended to cross the Atlantic, merchant marine. Didn't happen, never will now. I have, however, spent 15 years taking in the sunrises from the Calmac Oban to Tiree/Barra ferry. I may just have shared some of them with you...
Graham, why do you think it will never happen? In fact, the 2 other passengers on the ship were a German lady and a Swiss gentleman both retired and over 70 years old. If you are in good health (medical exam is required) and want to do it you can. Have some patience so the pandemic is behind us, make a plan and go :)
I did my first container ship from Dunkerque to Guadeloupe and Martinique and last one like you from Bremerhaven to Charleston & Miami, ship went on to Mexico and I picked it up on return leg. absolutely fabulous, French was best food obs and crew, officers were French and crew Romanian, both were great, I had the run of the ship except engine room when you made an appointment and were given the tour, unlimited access to bridge and got permission to go aft when casting off but had to keep an eye on the officer in charge and follow him without question. It was the best thing I have ever done, the solitude, the space, the insignificance of man when you're on the ocean is huge. US pilots at Charleston were great, told me to ask as much as I like and to question what was happening. Both trips I was the only passenger, if you like solitude and your own company, dont need amusing and at ease with yourself then this could be for you.
Grahame Gourlay I had a recent near death experience and as I healed I wondered what I’d like to do, for me. This would be it, if they’d accept a 55 year old black female. I would even love to help the chef. Maybe I’ll look into it.
This video doesn’t deserve to have only 200 thousand views! It should get more than one million views!! Because this great man showed something that mostly all of us here have never seen before! Well done!!
Great video! I remember that in January 1974 I joined the Greek Merchant Navy on board N/V Aegis Logic (New built) for 23 months travelling into ًWestern Europe, Western Hemisphere, South Africa, India, Singapore, Australia, Japan, USA, Venezuela & Panama Canal. I remember that the most difficult seas were the Sea of Japan, South Africa and the English Channel. It was an once-in-a-lifetime experience!
I love this video and how I would have never imagined a container ship would have a pool. Amazing views from the sides of the ship I would love to experience something like this in my life time but I highly doubt I’d ever.
Great video. That is why I like cruising, the sunrises and sunsets at sea beautiful. Too bad on a cruise ship we don't get to see the mechanical systems including engine room, power generation , HVAC etc.
Hey, I thanks for sharing this video. I enjoy it when I can use youtube in a practical way. By that I mean that I am searching for videos, and people which give me answers to everyday questions and things I wonder how I could go about doing. I am planning a trip to Maine, in July, together with my wife and our 2 dogs. I'm looking forward to a two week stay in Maine, a workshop, then I enjoy ideas about staying for 1 or 2 more weeks, before I want to be back on the cargo to Europe. I am looking for answers to the questions Where and how did you find that crossing with the freight ship? Are 1 or more dogs allowed on board? How spontaneous can such a booking be and since you say you were the only passenger on board is that always so? What are your experiences? Greetings
Hey, just google "Cargo / Freighter ship travel", there is a couple of agencies who sell different routes. You can travel all oceans. Usually you need to book well in advance as spots are very limited (4-6 passengers a ship maybe). Spots are mostly booked for around the world trips (or return trips), so doing just one leg as I did might be even harder to book, but it is possible. We were 3 passengers onboard, but the other 2 did the whole ship journey Europe-USA-Mexico-USA-Europe. Not sure about the dogs, but you can find answers on those travel agencies websites. Good luck :)
Very interesting video. Seeing this makes me think if I ever wanted to go on a cruise, I'd go on one of these before a cruise ship. Pig roasts, BBQ, beer, a gym, cozy lodgings and lots of space. That looked quite fun !
This video brought back wonderful memories of my own trip. Your cabin was very much like the one I had on the Galaxy, except I didn't have a desk. It was also just a level below the bridge, so I had an awesome window view above the line of the containers. The most beautiful sunset I saw was when coming in to Japan. My crummy camera could not possibly capture how stunning it was. The officers on these ships are Europeans (mostly German) and the crews are almost entirely Filipino. And those boys know how to party.
Thank you very much for sharing this. I loved your narration and all the beautiful images of sunrise/sunset, blue waters, wide landscapes... A really nice review indeed ! Safe travels :-)

I've been the Charleston, SC. I've crawled all around inside that old aircraft carrier you see at 26:45. The USS Yorktown. Hot place is Charleston, and the Yorktown, with no AC was a hot box! Great fun though! The old destroyer you can see beside her is the USS Laffey. She had an interesting encounter with an armada of Japanese suicide planes. She took a licking, but kept on kicking and prevailed!

very beautiful video with the occasional funny moment (in fast forward). Great shots of the bulbous bow, and I absolutely adored the engine rooms (my late father was a first engineer in/on cargo ships; my grandfather was a captain). I only wish you had spent a little more time on the bridge with slower pan shots :):) wishes for more ocean crossings! sailors are a weird lot, but warm at heart. cheers from Greece
Wow that engine room is really loud , I've been on ships as a load checker Traffic Management export/import but I've never been out of the bay harbor's on any ships going out to sea . During the walk the ocean looks so pretty and blue unlike the brown water in The German Port . The sun rise was really beautiful , reminds me of breakfast on the ocean front in Fort Lauderdale Florida & Lauderdale By The Sea Florida sun rise breakfast .
The destination port, at Charleston, was an English colony in the early 1600s, an it was named after King Charles ~ charles-town > charleston. ...back when American was run properly.
TY, great expierence. Did Brh - NY on Container, great Adventure for me also. I loved every moment of it. The change to do one of my Dream things appeared and I took it. No pool, really rough Sea, I was allowed by Captain 1x for 20 min to go outside. Elevators shutdown, furniture was chained down and dishes were flying of the table. The food was great, the time on the Bridge so wonderfull, the way the entire crew had a possitive attitude was remarkeble. My bragging Rights: Never got Seasick"!. ... TY, got to enjoy my journey once again by watching your video.
Watched your video Diary right through. Great :) Enjoyed it and reminded myself of the many South Atlantic crossings I have made at sea from Cape Town to St. Helena Island . Thanks for sharing!
@@BL0WUPFISHHello! I sailed on the Royal Mail vessel RMS St Helena at the time to St. Helena from Cape Town. It was the last Royal Mail Ship for the UK in the world operating. This video is awesome! I always wondered how it is to be a conteiner ship crew. And I love the way you put it, the video is so calm, positive and uninvasive. You made my day with this video! :)
I sailed with P&O Containers and P&O Nedlloyd as a cadet. After I qualified I moved to Cruise then offshore vessels. I did enjoy box boats though. They were better when there was no TVs in cabins though as everyone socialised in the officer’s saloon/crew mess. Once TVs got put in cabins people just stayed in their cabins.
I've always wanted to too, since I was about 13. That is, until I found out how much it costs! I could get a one-way plane ticket to Australia from the West Coast of America for less than $400, including tax. That's a 15 hour flight. On a cargo freighter, that's at least 26 days at a minimum of $3,700 USD (after paying for traveler's insurance, and assuming your passport and health record's are up to date).
totally worth it if you're looking for a true nautical experience unlike the "canned" product served-up by the commercial cruise lines. Can't recommend it enough, especially if it's been a long-time dream. Your instincts as a 13 year-old were spot-on.
very nice, maybe I will do this, Journeyman machinist retired,,, I know many of the containers need to be checked if there refrigerated,, I would do that for six hours a day for 5 days of what I just saw in return...
susieLa1 took the words out of my mouth, I've seen a few 'not cheap' cabins on cruise ships and apart from no balcony and smaller windows that berth on the container ship was far better and twice as big.
Seems better then a cruise ship for shore...seems cleaner! seems peaceful..., but 24 degrees is warm?? . Also it might be interested to know how the day is for the crew ,like how many hours they work ,different jobs etc. you don't see them too much even at the wheel?!,or were they not allowed to be filmed? ?How much does this cost or do you work for your fare? If so what do you do?
I've been considering doing a freighter trip, this was really helpful and a thorough view of what it is like, thank you. Showing all the space to walk around particularly relieved one of my worries. I'm not sure why, but I found all the little signs this is where the crew both works and lives (the cactus on the bridge, the welcome mat, the karaoke) really nice. Was there anywhere to just sit sit and watch the ocean outside? Also, did you ever feel out of place/in the way?
You were very lucky the weather cooperated with you given what time of year that was especially when you got to the Gulf Stream of the United States. I really enjoyed this experience you had on this container ship. Makes me want to do it myself and I know why the Captain would not let you do the lifeboat drill because that can get really dangerous in bad weather and those guys have to do it in all weather conditions all times of the year.
Hi kinda cool situations. Great video and travel option for the experience. Those that moan about the cost and time to cross the Atlantic need to slow down and take life in. Not everything needs to be done in a rush. How were the night skies when clear?
I haven’t even thought of THIS, pretty cool..!!! In the beginning of WWII, after school in Illinois, my Dad and his group was sent by Train 🚂 to NYC a few day’s to wait on a Bannana Boat, they had to take that to a new Base in Panam that had just opened, with a stop on the way in Nassau... He said it was Pretty Cool...... 😎👍✅

susieLa1 took the words out of my mouth, I've seen a few 'not cheap' cabins on cruise ships and apart from no balcony and smaller windows that berth on the container ship was far better and twice as big.
Wow!thank you for graet vlog. I want to, to sail like that to usa!! It help me a lot to diside!!
Hello, I was in the comment section when i came across yours and I was thrilled to say Hello to you
Seems better then a cruise ship for shore...seems cleaner! seems peaceful..., but 24 degrees is warm?? . Also it might be interested to know how the day is for the crew ,like how many hours they work ,different jobs etc. you don't see them too much even at the wheel?!,or were they not allowed to be filmed? ?How much does this cost or do you work for your fare? If so what do you do?
24°C
Would prefer the day's of steam, but definitely going back to Germany this way 😎 have to find out how to bring my Harley
Great video
Great video, nicely put together. It felt like a friend was showing me around the ship. Good sunsets and sunrise too!
Thanks again
Great video!
Hi kinda cool situations. Great video and travel option for the experience. Those that moan about the cost and time to cross the Atlantic need to slow down and take life in. Not everything needs to be done in a rush. How were the night skies when clear?
Why was there no footage of meals?
Great video, thanks for making it.
You're welcome!
I haven’t even thought of THIS, pretty cool..!!!
In the beginning of WWII, after school in Illinois, my Dad and his group was sent by
Train 🚂 to NYC a few day’s to wait on a Bannana Boat, they had to take that to a new
Base in Panam that had just opened, with a stop on the way in Nassau... He said it was
Pretty Cool...... 😎👍✅
