    It may not be the very biggest container ship but this is incredible! The engine-WOW! And that shaft goes on forever; reminds me of the Alaska pipeline. Just awesome video. Thanks so much for posting this!

    So this for the gear heads out there. I did the math and 109,000bhp @102 rpm works out to be....get this. 5,612,431.37 Foot Pounds of Torque. Over 5 and half million pounds of torque. That's insane !!!!!

    • @highvelocity123
      @highvelocity123 10 років тому +3

      Remo Williams So it would take 19,556... 5.0 liter V8's !!!!!!!!!! (making 287 ft. pounds of torque at 5500 RPM) each !!!! So when someone says there is no replacement for displacement they should probably use this example...hahaha.

    That was great. Yes it would have been nice to hear the ambient background sounds of the boat, and yes I know it over welemes the soundtrack. Question the last two song tracks, who was that. :) Thanks and keep them coming.

    This video would have been much better without dubbing over the natural / normal sounds of the ship.... ( -50 Points for dubbing over with music )

    So that's where I put my coffee... What an amazing video. Of course I'm old enough to recall the times when freighters used booms and tackle to move cargo, so these container ships are really new to me. I like the music, and I was astounded that you hald almost the whole ship to yourself. Were you a passenger or a member of the crew?

    Great video. Thanks. It's wild to see that there's no one in the bridge while the ship is underway. It's on autopilot? What if there's another ship in the way? And curious how efficient can it be to have a shaft of that length? Wouldn't it be more efficient to have something shorter?

    • @senatorclaghorn
      @senatorclaghorn 9 років тому +3

      Probably did the bridge bit in port. The shaft length will depend on the engine placement. Some ship designs find it better to have the engine placed farther forward.

    BTW, as I am now quite knowledgeable of marine diesel, other than drone of turbochargers the rythmic clatter on top deck. Is that from injectors or hydraulicly actuated exhaust valves? (Can't tell which). Thanks!

  • @Tsarex11
    @Tsarex11 11 років тому

    Probably E-type will remain the largest container ship built in Denmark. As far as new larger container ships will be built in S. Korea (Maersk EEE, and those ordered by CSCL). Large container shipbuilding has moved to Asia.

  • @carnation99
    @carnation99 10 років тому

    it s all about making the most out of your vessel.the deckhouse is placed near midship.reason is the visibility line.according IMO u need to be able to see 2 ship lengths in front of the ship (standing on the bridge). if you place is more to aft, you will have to take off containers, in order to look over them.in this case they place the main engine below the deckhouse. placing it somewhere else, would mean again container loss. as the engine room would take the place of a cargo hold.

    This _could_ have been a really interesting & revealing tour of the ship, if not for the leaving out essential parts: Provisions departments (incl. the huge freezers), galley, dining areas, day room(s), crew compartments (Radio room, if there still are one...), and, as others have mentioned: the ship's _natural,_ - ambient sounds - instead of some bad 'head-banger'-trash. [Anyway, thanks for the effort! . . . ]

      Cargo ships have unmanned engine control room. Bridge is manned during the sailing so probably he was either on watch or asked people to move aside.

    Now for REAL tour! This or Emma Maersk which has exceeded this ship. Wärtsilä on that ship is 14RTA Flex96C (Hence with FOURTEEN cylinders)! That MAN/B&W/Doosan (Wärtsilä) is largest diesel machine on this planet! If I counted correct this one on this particular vessel here in this video, is 12RTA Flex96C (only 12. But still impressive). I would love to go to top deck of this engine (or of Emma Maersk) and enjoy what vibration there may be, turbochargers and musical percussion of rythmic injectors (or exhaust valve actuators) live and in person! Video one can see and hear, but cannot, sense heat, engine room smells, or indeed FEEL vibration!

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 9 років тому

      I'm not absolutely positive, but I do believe that an engine that tops out at 102 rpm doesn't have any need for a turbocharger. Or a supercharger. Or a Dodge Charger.

    • @stanpatterson5033
      @stanpatterson5033 9 років тому

      And furthermore, the engine shown in this video IS indeed a 14RT Flex96C. It can be verified early in the engine room part of the video tour, AND the poster states the designation in his on-screen text.
