Although on the other hand, to see a new listener to Floyd they get that moment of understanding of having to relax, put down their guard and let the band take over to that other side "Of the Moon" Keep 0n keeping on bud. Dude...LOVED your reaction to this. You got the message. I first heard tis song in 1973 when I was 17...it changed my life.
    What you need to do, my friend, is listen to Dark Side of the Moon from beginning to end...that’s the way it was intended. It’s a trip. That change you heard at the end was a reprise of Breathe, the second song on the album. At the VERY LEAST, listen to Time an the next song together....it’s Great Gig in the Sky, and it will BLOW YOU AWAy. i PROMISE YOU!

      Tom, I was 17 back in '73, and must have listened to DSotM a zillion, but I just didn't quite get the gravity of the lyrics to "Time" until on day, in 1996 when my kids and I were packing to move, they wanted to hear some of my old vinyl LPs. My daughter was 18, my son was 14, and I was 41, and I made us sandwiches and we sat and listened to DSotM, in its entirety. The kids were blown away by the album, and they asked me if I felt old listening to it. I hadn't until they asked me, but what really blew my mind was when they commented about how depressing it must be to in yer 40s and ya don't know where the time went. I was gobsmacked! I must have known what the lyrics meant, but they really didn't seem to pertain to me back when I was 17. My kids were obviously a lot more sophisticated than I was at their age. LOL
      But now, I have just turned 65, and those same lyrics make my heart ache with longing for a second chance to hear that starting gun. It's very haunting. Especially during this COVID-19 lock-down, period, when time seems to go by even faster. Every day is exactly the same. Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails wrote a song called "Every Day is Exactly the Same" on the With Teeth album. It's a real "cheery" song that could actually be the 2020 COVID Anthem. LOL
      *le sigh* As me Da used to tell me, "Getting old is a bitch because it's later than you think, Rene, and time's up."

    The last section (Breathe Reprise) is when the singer returns to his parental home ("Home, home again"), for his parent(s) funeral and prayers at a church ("the tolling of the iron bell, calls the faithful to their knees, to hear the softly, spoken magic spells").

    • @GergLounge
      @GergLounge 3 роки тому +3

      I thought that section was about reconciling thoughts on passing time (aging, inevitability, etc...) while observing other people participating in church life; those people seeking relief from the same questions.

      The many comments about the "Reprise" being about the singer's transition into his final years and days of life are spot on. Running "to catch up with the sun" speaks about the years getting shorter as we get older and hurrying to finish goals in life before time runs out.

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 3 роки тому +1

      I understand that section of the song as him at his own home hearing the local church bells which are rung traditionally to call people to church for a service, and people are praying in hope of life after death, but he calls the prayers 'softly spoken magic spells' which implies there is no life after death, or the hearer of the church bells (writer of the song) doesn't believe there is any life after death.

    • @GergLounge
      @GergLounge 3 роки тому +1

      Not a funeral. You don't kneel at a funeral. It's just a Sunday in England. The bell tolls to call the faithful to church where they kneel and pray. The prayers are the softly spoken magic spells.
      My impression of the song is that it represents someone who is not religious sitting thinking about time on a Sunday. Concluding their thoughts they realize the didn't say very much about time, which is a huge concept. As they realise this the church bells in their town begin tolling, calling the faithful . . . Another wasted day which is what the song is lamenting. All the time we waste, and all the things we think are important that really aren't.

    These lyrics have been with me since I was a kid. In my teens I joined a band. In my 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s, playing in bands took me around the world. Even in my early 50s I was still touring, right up to when covid hit. I'm now 56 and living by the sea. I have drums permanently set up and I play for an hour before I even turn the coffee machine on. Then I fill my days with swimming in the sea, taking photos, making videos, and now that gigs are happening again, going to gigs. As soon as my band is ready to play again, I'm stage ready. I know many people of my age who are now resigned to the fact that their active life is coming to an end, but fck that! I've got plenty of things still left to do. In part, I thank this song for that.

    This is a common theme for Roger Waters (the bass player and lyricist). Many, many songs explore the dichotomy of hiding from the daily struggles and stress of life or meeting those hurdles head on. The whole album of The Wall explores that theme. It also appears as a main theme in this album, Dark Side Of The Moon, and also on the albums, Wish You Were Here, and Animals.

    To answer your question about the final lyrics....
    The song takes you from child hood through life until death. So at the end , the representation of "Home, home again, I like to be here when I can" refers to yourself older in lfe and just wish to rest after a toiling life.
    For the final verse its represents your funeral the church bell, faithful to their knees, and speak the softly spoken magic spell. Obviously refers to your relgious rituals each hold dear to attain atonement.
    Great reaction sir, keep up with FLOYD, you will get ALOT of views and listen to revolutionary music that was ahead of their time, and beats almost everything on radio today.
    I do agree if you listen to FLOYD please start at the beginning of an album and continue through the end, you WILL NOT be disapointed.

      The idea of the ‘tolling’ bell (the way it has the recurring sound) was first introduced, i believe, on the album ‘MEDDLE’, in the song ECHOES - with the recurring “PING” of the initial piano note. Since then the recurring ‘bell’ sound has been reprised a number of times in their songs - especially within an acoustic guitar setting in some songs on one of the bass notes. Listen for it as you explore further.

    But it is a concept album, each track flows into the next so you can pick tracks but you'll miss the overall thread.
    For a good intro, I would strongly recommend PF 1972 Echoes - Live at Pompeii where the guys play in an empty Roman Amphitheater with no audience apart from maybe a bunch of ghosts.

    One of the shows that I attended was The Wall, an incredible, phenomenal performance, a show of such magnitude it's difficult to describe. If you're interested, I suggest you do a search of The Wall performances, to get an understanding of the immenseness of these shows.
    I would like to request you react to Pink Floyds "Comfortably Numb" Live from the Pulse Concert from 1994. Big event, Big long inspiring solo, Big incredible light show, and one the greatest endings of a single song EVER!

    Dark Side of the Moon is the most iconic album in the rock era in my opinion. It was recorded back in 1973 and they didn't have the tools that they have now in the recording studio. They had incredible engineers put this album together and used highly sophisticated multitracking tape machines to make this album. The sound quality on things back then sounds more detailed to me. Great reaction!!!

    The last bit is a reprise of the second song on the album "Breathe" that leads into "The Great Gig in the Sky" a song about death, it depicts the stages of grief from loss to sad acceptance. I believe the Iron bell part from breathe reprise is a funeral that follows the intent of the lyrics to "Time".

    I'm sure someone has already pointed this out. The second song on Dark Side of the Moon is Breathe, a song about being born and having different paths in life to choose from. What you heard after Time is Breathe - Reprise. It probably didn't seem like it at first, but it does tie into the message of Time as well as continues the message of different paths. He has chosen the path of pursuing wealth and spends his free time warming his bones by the fire, while others turn to religion or something spiritual.

    There's a short list of all-time great rock albums. Tommy, Sergeant Pepper, Dreamboat Annie, ... Dark Side of the Moon (and Wish You Were Here) are comfortable in that company. The whole album is one story -- you have to experience it as a whole. The arc from birth to death, innocence to resignation... timeless (as it were). This song segues into the next, which makes sense of those final lyrics...

    Most definitely a Dirty 10!!!!!!!!!! Bro, it's good you've *finally* been exposed to Pink Floyd. _The Dark Side of the Moon_ is one of the top-selling albums ever! And you really need to experience it in its entirety.
    That said, here I go recommending a video from a different artist. This was just posted a few hours ago. She learned this song and recorded it in one afternoon! Let me at least try to make a relevant connection here (even though it won't get very close to Kevin Bacon lol - pop culture reference). Okay, when asked who her main influences are on guitar, she cites David Gilmour as one of the main ones. And she grew up with her parents listening to Pink Floyd. There. That is the relevance I can give to the following suggestion for a reaction. This young artist's name is Daniela Villarreal, and in the video linked below, she covers a Foo Fighters song. In fact, I believe you did a reaction to her and her band covering a different Foo Fighters song. Here she channels Dave Grohl in an acoustic cover of "Walk".

    I love it that the guy picks up the drums behind the bass & guitar. You can see his head following it. This song is a freaking masterpiece. Every part and in sum. I didn't like Pink Floyd the first time I heard them.. (yeah, I know), but a few years later, it was the soundtrack for a very, very amazing & long love-making session with my then girlfriend at her place. From then on the album and Pink Floyd became part of my DNA. We didn't have a song - we had an album.. Dark Side of The Moon.

    The last section is a reprise for 'Breathe', originally called 'Breathe (reprise)' on the original vinyl. 'The tolling of the iron bell' is a reference to death, the death toll of churches for one of their own who died. But the magic spell acknowledges the possibility of resurrection? or does it? How about some 'The Mob', with VJ looming, how about 'No doves fly here'?

    I was just about to write a comment telling you it was the three ages of man, Youth. Middle age and Old age when you got it. Can I suggest another band for you to try and extend your horizons further. Nightwish is a symphonic metal band with a massively varied repertoire. From a lighter symphonic metal song like Ghost Love Score live from Wacken 2013 to harder metal songs like Romanticide from the same Wacken festival and Yours is an empty hope from Wembley arena in 2015. They are a band that are brilliant live. They have been around since 1996, I only discovered them last year and they are now one of my top 4 bands along with Queen, Pink Floyd and The Who. Hope you decide to explore them

    Our host's first time really listening to Pink Floyd, and first time hearing this song, all with worthy attention.
    He got it right off the bat.
    PF's music may be mainstream in popularity, but not in it's intentional content and delivery.
    Just wait until he builds up to their next two albums.
    He will definitely catch on to the hard messages of songs like Welcome to the Machine
    "What did you dream? It's alright, we told you what to dream."
    Their Animals album (1977) is far removed from anything mainstream, and will prove to be an absolute in depth ass-kicker. Cheers.
