Pink Floyd is Legendary! This song was written in 1972, 50 years ago, (I was 16 years old att), and it still holds up today as good as ever, maybe even more so! All Pink Floyd songs are like that, works of art. And the lyrics of this song,... impressive to say the least, especially when you realize it was written by guys in their mid 20s, very insightful young men. Incredible!
I've been a huge Pink Floyd fan since this album came out in 1973, the "Dark Side of the Moon" album. That album went 14 X Platinum, and sold over 50 million copies to date, (and still counting), and it spent 962 weeks on Billboards Top LP's of all time, that's over 18 years! Again, incredible.

"I bet all of the sounds mean something." Yes, you are correct... the "pendulum" is the ticking of a clock (thus the song title), while at the same time there is a heartbeat sound. A very simple-to-grasp musical explanation that your pulse is like a ticking clock and that one thing that definitely unites us all is the same, unstoppable progression of time. As others have pointed out in the comments, this song definitely hits you deeper as you get older.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 27 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Scott Page” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.

This song should be played and it's meaning explained to every young person now and forever. It deals with mortality awareness and the transition from ignorance of one's mortality when young to the painful awareness of one's mortality as we age. It is a cautionary tale that the time we have on Earth is limited and growing shorter with each passing day, and that the time we do have is precious, limited, and should not be taken for granted or waisted on frivolous pursuits, or worse, the pursuit of nothing at all. Deepest lyrics of all time!

Like the comment below mine says, it gets deeper the older you get. This is my favorite song from Pink Floyd, not only because it is brilliantly composed, but because of how impactful it is in our lives. I think of it as each verse is like the seasons of your life, Spring, (Youth) Summer (Adulthood) Fall (Middle Aged) and Winter (The final chapter of life). In the end he is filled with regret that he waisted so much time of his life and is waiting to die. The Church bells are soon to ring out for him. Then he ascends to "The Great Gig in the Sky" which is the next song on the album. DEEP!

That's a meta reaction... "I missed it before. Now I've got it". That's the song in a nutshell!
Great, honest reactions as always. Keep it up

I'm proud of you, young man!
    You got it!
I'm an old guy, widowed, and now living on autopilot, with nothing to show for my years.
Now I just go to work every day to pay the overdue bills and come home to an empty house.
When I was a young man there were several things I wanted to do. Getting my private pilot certificate and buying a small airplane was one of the biggest of them. I made three attempts at getting my PPC and every time something went wrong. The time went away because of outside people or things, or the money went away for similar reasons.
I now live my flying dream by attending an occasional air show once or twice a year and dream of what could have been if I had taken more time for myself, and actually used the time instead of wishing for what now will never be.
If you have a dream or goal, go get it! Make a plan. Follow that plan. Let NOBODY get in the way of that plan!
Just yesterday I heard a quote, and I have no recollection of who it came from......
"Saying 'NO' costs nothing. Saying 'YES' can be extremely expensive".
Say yes when it is in YOUR best interest, and learn to say "NO" to everyone else!
With Much Love And Respect..... Live Long And Prosper!

What's really a trip is to listen to songs for three decades. And one day it sounds brand new all over again bro,i was a musician first half of my life. When this occured with me i told a long time band member this. And his reaction was wow man i know"! But what i mean by that is the message is the same words but means something else all of a sudden ! As you are a different person now than you were then.. . Profound !
    The real artificer of music
His words will have meaning to each individuals life . Interpreted
    In many many ways.

Yep. Exactly how it was first time i heard it in 1977. That's how old my album is. Now, it has a whole new meaning. One of my favorite and well played albums.

you should check out the documentary on how this album was made...based on the technology of the day, it makes you appreciate not only their strive for perfection, but also their genius to try things that hadn't been done nor machines invented yet that could do them...long before computers were household names...Rock ON!

Thanks for articulating this song so we'll.
like you,I have a 25 year old daughter, who sadly self harmed recently within an inch of her young life.
I made me me stand back and evaluate my own life and my journey,I am in bad health due to work accident and now i feel the true meaning to this song.
to me,it's about life is short,we only have a short time here, and making the most of our lives is so important, especially our family and loved ones.

As many people have said, the older you get the more you appreciate the lyrics. Couldn’t agree with you more, live your life to the max. I’m 60 and 4 weeks ago I had a major heart attack. I’d actually passed away for a little while and had to have CPR. A second chance at life but a lot of regrets of missed opportunities.

Dude, one of my favorite albums. Listened to it the other day. The lyrics are on point. "And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun" Its your life, get to it!

Thanks for covering this one. Usually when I see a reaction to this song, I skip over it. Because it hurts. I'm 50 and I've accomplished nothing. But you gave a little hopeful lift. Thank you. I'm glad I watched

I absolutely love watching your reaction to this Pink Floyd excellence. I could see in your expressions that you completely got it. The David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright incarnation of Pink Floyd were onto something very special. Time happens to be my favorite Floyd song……and every single note, beat and vocal were exactly like it should be. A perfect song……
