This does bring one question to mind, and that is hypoxic training. This is one of those things that comes up from time to time. Some of it is breath holding and some if it involves high altitude. Not sure how important it is. I was told that I needed to breathe every 3rd arm stroke, but could never go beyond about 100 yards before I was gasping. I am figuring that this is mostly due to me burning a lot of O2 while exercising compared to most people. I guess like sweating, it is highly variable.
That brings to mind another point, staying hydrated while exercising, and carb intake while swimming. I went with Precision Hydration and Fueling products. They are the only product that offers variable sodium levels in their hydration products. I do not like cramping.... Stretching, if I am starting to cramp, works for about half the length of the pool....

The urge to breathe is driven by carbon dioxide levels. 'Hypoxic' training in swimming is mostly carbon dioxide tolerance training, which can be helpful. Just Google CO2 tolerance and you'll find information. It won't be specific to swimming, but it is the same idea.
