    Great to see Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie getting more exposure. The more you listen to Bird, the more you can "hear" him. Fortunately, the first recordings I heard were unintentionally the Dial recordings on the Charlie Parker label. His ballads were on side 2, and side one has some all-time greats. It's funny how the new listeners more easily grasp John Coltrane's playing but find Parker to be a challenge. It helps that folks like you play his records. Bird Lives!

  • @gpksong
    @gpksong 6 годин тому

    Parker's best work was recorded on Dial and Savoy and on live broadcasts. Norman Granz was not a good producer of bebop or even advanced swing players. He imposed his own idea of jazz on his recordings. Of course, Parker had some great moments despite his alcoholism and drug addiction, but Granz never understood Parker's music in any deep way and wasted precious time on JATP showcases, mediocre string arrangements, and some dubious backing musicians. Everything Parker recorded is worth hearing, but the 1950s were not his best work by any measure. The Latin jazz recordings are probably the best thing on Granz labels.

      I think the Bird and Diz recording is iconic. I do also love the earlier recordings and I have box sets on the Dial and Savoy recordings as well. All Bird is essential in my opinion. Parker himself loved the Strings records and he considered them some of his best. Thanks for coming by and commenting.

    Good album but not exceptional. There have been resp. are many great piano jazz trios of the likes of Esbjorn Svensson or Tingvall, mostly out of Scandinavia, or e.g. Rosset Meyer Geiger out of Switzerland. So, there is strong competition amongst top class musicians. Nevertheless if none of the above is present yet in the collection, it’s a good start.

    Great intro of these musicians. Another fine recommendation. Thank you, Matthew. Since the cover says „Made in Czech“ it is assumingly and, if so, unfortunately pressed by GZ which is in my experience often a disappointment in terms of pressing quality. Favorite Steve Hackett album is Voyage of the Acolyte (his first) with Collins and Rutherford lending full support. Voyage of the Acolyte is basically the lost Genesis album, sans Banks, who wouldn't get behind any of those Hackett penned songs getting onto a Genesis album. Pretty much the reason why Hackett left Genesis. The Circus and The Nightingale would be a close second.

    I think it's difficult to find something "absolute" in the relationship between audio playback environment and media. This is because, with vinyl, even a single cartridge has its own unique characteristics and performance differences, and sound quality differs depending on the clock performance of an SACD DA converter or the choice between PCM or DSD, so I don't think there's much point in comparing how these sound. Personally I try to choose media that seems to have good mastering, but it's mostly a gamble.

    Great music to be had on vinyl but unfortunately with poor distribution choices and buying options for Europeans. Basically unobtainable not even thru major reputable record dealers. Maybe it’s only or preferred for release in the US market and for non-US buyers who accept to spend more on shipping and import tax than on the record itself. Hopefully next time distribution choices and buying options will be more respectful to European fans. Streaming would at least be an option but the ultimate is the release on vinyl.

    Great review, thanks so much for doing it. I think as a person gets older, I'm 68, the Ortofon Blue would sound better because we are losing are upper frequency hearing as we age thus the Blue being more brighter will sound better for older people. My only hesitation for buying the Fluance RT85 is that pesky no VTA, I heard what you said and I agree to some extent, I have an old Empire TC400 that sounds amazing with old classic rock music, and I would like to be able to swap that in once in awhile, but the VTA thing could prevent that. Regardless of that nonsense I just mentioned, my eye is now on the NAD C588 only because of that damn VTA that the Fluance doesn't have. The C588 is made by Project with NAD specs, it's wow and flutter is .001 vs .007 for the Fluance, but the C588 comes with Ortofon Red, but it also has a carbon fiber tone arm...argh.
