- This car came so close to replacing the Ford Crown Victoria, except it was 2 cylinders short and wrong wheel drive...
The impala 9c1 is still one of the best deals you can find in the used cop car market! with its proven tough 3.8L V6 it makes for a great cheap and affordable family sedan.
but it aint no crown vic though...

My 3800 in my Buick lasted until 210,000+ miles before I sold it. Never had any problems with it! Very reliable engine and great acceleration.
I have a 02 impala with the 3.8 and i get around 30 mpg out of it. Only replaced the radiator oxygen sensor and regular maintenance. It has 221k on it and still going
Randy! I have an 02 Impala too and I can't believe how little it has cost me to run over the eight years I've had it. Amazing in the snow and not a scratch after some pretty serious fender benders. 141k and looking forward to 100k more. This car is the best kept secret on the road and I will buy another without blinking an eye when the time comes to do so. Enjoy yours!!
I purchased a 02 impala base model for 1500 with 134k on the dash, I tell you I love this car. I gotta engine light on but that's bc the mass air flow sensor
Mass airflow has been fuckin me too
sensor de oxigeno en el radiador?
I love that you're going over so many of these American cars of this era.
We own a 2004 impala with 185k miles on it. I actually liked this style.
Did you ever have your heater go out because mine just did and I don't know why
@@winterszhuzhupets2 nope but the cam phasers went out and we never fixed it. Sold it for 1 k non running lol. Door sagging. It was my dads car that was supposed to be mine but I bought a truck now.
I think the guy racing the Impala didn't realize that the Impala stopped racing and prior to that they looked pretty even
Actually, it's a Buick V6.
I was gonna say that
Looks like it LOL
chevy could have given this car a supercharger for police work but they didn’t for some reason
I preferred the next generation. Those were quick! That was one of my patrol cars.
One of your patrol cars, was it the Impala or Crown Vic ?
I take it that you are either a former police officer, or still an active duty officer.
Just wondering, have you driven the 90's Chev Caprice Classic ?
I've been in the 1988 Caprice Classic, but not been in the 90's version.
I find the 1988 Caprice to be very comfortable car, and with huge trunk, as well as everything else being large.
Thanks You.
Fwd is better on rain and snow. Rwd is just fun and modern.
I don't think that modern is the right word this for describing RWD
Most of the oldies has rwd fwd is modern for merican cars
Those old Buick 3800 v6's can definitely give the 4.6 a run for their money. I've seen some up their in mileage with 400k+ miles on the clock
Beat a few grand marquis in mine before .
You have to remember that the crown Victoria weighs more, the engine is more outdated and it has a truck frame.
Beat them in my 2003 Grand Prix 3.8L
Got a supercharger slapped on and nitrous can.
I was referring to the cars reliability.
Idk. The private limousine company near me sold their last Lincoln town car with 560k miles
My 2005, 3.4 impala, ain't going no where. Chevy baby...
Just purchased my first car and its the same model. I was supposed to get a 04 a4 but this is way better. Chevy FTW!! Its quick too
Front wheel drive is underrated
Fr why so much hate
I have a Impala 2000 it's beautiful and his machine and full mechanical it's good. Greetings from Mexico
Jaaa yo también soy de Mexico y tengo un impala, LS, 3.8, rojo cereza metálico, asientos de piel, vaya, me encanta, que carrazo
i like how it looks as a police interceptor
I love front wheel drive cars
That's a fair analysis of those cars, I drove several of them back when they were new. When they first came out, I remember being sad that it was so small, lacked the presence on the road that a Vic has, no V8, and no rear wheel drive, just like you said. You should've mentioned the fun quirk on these cars - the surveillance mode switch - it would kill all the lights to "black it out" when parked at night.
I wanna buy me one of these or ta 05-06 Tahoe PPV
I honestly dont mind the front wheel drive or v6 my mom had a civilian version and she loved it maybe thats why its one of my fave impalas cuz i grew up in the backseat of one anything can be turned into a fast car if you know what you're doing i love the crown vic but the vics main problem was thag it was under powered for its weight the impala didnt have that problem i believe it was lighter rhan the vic
Impala is lighter and it's a unibody. The crown victoria has a true frame like a truck, believe it or not. Jumping a curb is more practical in the crown victoria. The crown victoria also has a more out of date engine that goes back to 1992. The crown vic also happens to be wider and longer so I'm not sure why people compare the two. Currently I drive a 2004 Chevy impala and 2003 Ford crown victoria p71. Both are wonderful cars to drive. If I wanted to drive a long trip with my family on vacation I'd drive the crown victoria only because it has a better spring package (haul weight better)
I remember seeing these being used by the Brighton, IL and Edwardsville, IL police forces back in the day.
Always have soft spot for this car it was the first car my parents got me shared it with my dad and I loved that car to death
I bought an 05 impala 9c1 3.8L V6 ($3k) ex-fmr police cruiser from the county where I live. bought it back in 2014 with 79k and now has 140k. love it!
I had a blue on blue 2003 regular Impala. 3.4 V6. She did end up with transmission problems. However, I still miss that car and want another one. It really drove good. Cornering was sweet. I never cared about not having a freaking Crown Victoria. My front wheel drive got me around in a lot of bad weather situations. I love my mom's Mercury Marauder tho. It is nice and fast as hell. But...I loved my Impala. It was really comfortable for me. More so than the Crown Victoria would be.
I'm looking to buy either a 04-05 impala 9c1 or a 05-06 Tahoe PPV soon
I was going to buy one last year had dual spot lights was nice shape but needed a tune up and break lines done but next month I'm hoping to buy a crown vic
It is 2019, In 2004 I bought a New Chevy Impala 3.8 liter--My wife still drives this car, it has been one of the Best cars that I have ever Owned, it does have a intake leak and burns about a quart of oil between changes but this problem is common on these cars--it has never failed us on the Road....
I talked to a buddy of mine who's got a civilian version a 01 base model impala i talked to him about one of these he said get 06-up but i can't afford that he highly advise me to go ahead and get a crown vic and personally stated it would be a better choice and I'll feel better.
Can you review the 2008 Police Impala 3.9?
At least it has a great engine. 3800 V6
I got a 2000 Chevy Impala LS with a 3800 motor and I get 400 miles on a full tank only takes me 50$ to fill up my tank but my f150 takes 200$ to fill up way better and it's a great car
I have a 2005 ss that runs 12s with a few mods
My friend has one of these and he's replacing something under the hood every month or so. Not the police one just a base model impala
Lovely. I would personally go to the 2001 Impala.
Damn I wish my 9c1 had that dark interior.
These are good cars, once you put in a new transmission I've heard that is. The 2012-2016 Impala PPVs I'd say are the best W body to get! Just my opinon though, thanks for the info!
Lol the Impalas are just terrible. They have issue after issue after issue. When it comes to police vehicles every one will have its problem but it’s so bad with the impala😂 and the Caprices are just too damn expensive for depts
Yes they do have transmission problems but they also have a handful of electronical problems as well. I personally own one they are nice to drive and they're comfortable and they're fairly easy to modify but they still have those notorious GM electrical problems
I have replaced ALOT of these 3800 engines AND transmissions in these. The plastic lower intake gaskets/upper plastic plenum fail and send coolant into the oil. This softens the bearings and they rod knock. Also they leak oil like crazy from the oil pan gaskets and valve cover gaskets. Transmissions are fairly weak as well.
I think that may be the secret of these vehicles in that the original owners have gotten the repairs you've mentioned done early on. My neighbor has one with 300k miles. I bought one with 112k and it was serviced every 3750 miles. The repairs you mentioned have already been done.
Now they have front wheel drive explores 🤦♂️
About to get rid of my 2005. I really loved this car got it for 700 bucks ran perfectly up until I got upper and lower gaskets repairs and the engine didn’t start up after because it flooded with coolant.
The repair is what caused this?
I own the Impala he forgot to mention that it also came out with a 3.9 version of the Police Package and they are great cars I own three of them and none of them let me down if you take good care and do regular make this on the transmission you're never have no problems with the three-point now I'm driving now got 350,000 miles and still going strong
There's a very clean 03 9C1 former unmarked with ONLY 41K mi listed on Ebay in CA.
I have an 05 Impala SS and it's smoked every old crown Vic it's been up against.
The ss impala was a supercharged 3.8L v6 240 hp
The impala at 2:38 has a 3.4 liter not 3.8. The 3.8 also came with the option of supercharged, the crown vic did not. Also worth mentioning a quick tvs swap on the supercharged version would shit on any almost any stock v8 including mustangs, etc.
Very Good
05 the best I still have mines over 200+Mike's just a few changes minor
Thank you 4 the video but Wrong year impalas Bro. do 06+...
So does it comes with chip or no?
that's ok ! I rather have the 3800 v6 !
I sorta like this version on the impala but I think Chevy was trying too hard to replace the og crown Vic with this one
no supercharger on that 3800? i thought police cars were supposed to be "souped up" back then.
These impalas were so comfortable so drive. Really smooth. However, these suck for rural departments. Chicago PD, Phoenix Pd, etc this is great cause of city driving. But they don’t hold up worth shit.
Is this worse than the chevy lumina 9c3 police package?
Yes it's all true. impala has a functional interior. crown vic functional exterior
I miss it 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢❤
good job babe!
That was a 3.4 vs Vic
My bad is getting me one i want a Vic so bad not complaining thankful but rwd and maybe 300 hp is so i want
I had a 2005 Impala non-Police version, didn’t last past 96k miles till Transmission destroyed itself, turns out the transmission was a faulty design with a poorly designed modulator valve housing and had been a bad design and known and continued to use since 1991, I’ll never buy another new Chevy, never again I watched them pull the plastic off the seats of my Impala that’s how new it was so I know it was never abused
I love 2002 Impalas
Prager fact: The new Caprices are the fastest cop cars ever
REVIEW THE 2004/2005 IMPALA SS/SC
I own the 2005 Impala Vin K model. I'm not sure if it was an ex police car but if not, it was definately a security car. Removed the Roll cage/Police Partition/bars, and foolishly gave them to my father-in-law. Just found out the Police partition alone is worth $200 to $500 depending on condition. (FUCK ME! I'm repossessing that ASAP!)
The car is amazing though. I fell in love with it and use it as my daily driver. I plan on restoring it completely. (Seats are a bit damaged and so is the dashboard vinyl.) I actually plan on creating a collection of old police cars so this car, being the first in my collection, will be loved and fully restored. Even if I have to do an engine swap later on down the road. (Will swap for a lower mileage of the same exact engine though. My point is, very reliable car for me, and even getting it second hand, the most intensive repairs I have to do on it are Driverside Tie rod and Wheel bearing assembly. Which will be required to pass next year's inspection.
Literally the only other repairs I've done on this vehicle since I purchased it second hand are replace the battery, pick seat belt connectors from a junk yard, alternator, new tires, and install aftermarket horn. (As the clockspring is too expensive for a simple damn horn connector.)
xPreatorianx join impalaforums.com
@@reaperxtribe4383 I did join it.
xPreatorianx haha. nice. People helped me a lot. converting my dash to LED
@@reaperxtribe4383 Wait, what do you mean by that? I'm extremely curious now!
xPreatorianx there was a write up about converting your dash cluster to LED on there. it was for a 06 but it works the same way. it was pretty simple if you know anything about electronics and still easy if not. and it should work for the rest of the car as well. like doors and what not, climate control, radio. Although I fucked my radio up trying to bench test it after failing to get it to illuminate, but I think I just had too high of a resistor for my LED. prolly gonna go back at some point and redo them with lower OHM resistors. but if you have time on your hands it is totally worth it! not hard at all just time consuming a bit.
I'm looking at one for $2k 2002 with 68k miles on it. one owner car.
FWD I honestly still will never understand how stupid is GM
I'll take my Chevy with a V8 please!
And RWD.
Get the Chevy Camaro, I have seen the California Highway Patrol version of the 2000 style Camaro SS.
Its a Chevy with a V8 and its a Rear Wheel Drive setup.
One could buy the Tahoe / Suburban ex police vehicle, RWD and V8 Chevy.
Nope! This car was is not comfortable at all for police. I had a 2004 and then got an 2009 CVPI issued to me and the difference in comfort was pretty big. I mean, driving it without any police gear on (Duty Belt etc) was fine but once you get in with a vest, duty belt and everything else was very uncomfortable.
The 2000 through 2005 Police Impalas are maxed out at around 200 horsepower, yes. But the 2006 through 2011 had around 2040 to 2060. 2060 HP on a 3.9 liter V6 is pretty decent.
fwd does much better in regular driving, Everytime I do anything in my Vic the rear end throws out, really pisses me off because these fuckers around here go 40 over the limit and don't slow down for anything but the imaginary asshole that makes them slam on their brakes. one thing I cannot stand as compared to the GM cars is the whiplash from the brakes on my Vic, idk if it's all Vic's or just mine but it's got all new pads and rotors with fresh fluid and my God you have to baby the brakes to not get pulled forward 6 inches at the slowest of stops. the gm cars(not specifically the Impala because a lot of their cars shared the brake setup) the brakes let off a little right before you stop and it won't whiplash you at all unless you're giving it to it, and as far as engine power wise yeah the Impala is slower but you don't have to put your foot into it to get it to go unlike my vic. I have a 95 Riviera with the 3800 and it behaves much better, much more relaxing to drive the steering is lighter, brakes smoother and less daunting, now everything else about that car is fine, but what helps mine is that it's supercharged, but you don't have to get the supercharger to spool up to make it get out of it's way, and even though that car only has 5 more hp than my Vic and the same torque it's world's faster transmission shifts smoother and at the correct spot every time.(if you give it gas at any speed below 40 the tires will chirp) Ford may have got it right with the Vic but there should've been notice taken to why GM went the other direction.
Actually chevys. 1993 -96 caprice was the " preferred " cop car vs crown vic..it was when chevy dropped the caprice rwd platform..that they handed the market over to ford?...so really? crown vics owe their reputations to GM bean counters intent on losing all the rwd platforms in 90's GM cars except Camaro / corvette???
the interceptor i will be the new crown vic
my 05 impala has the most problems i've ever seen lmao I love the car but theres no way to fix the misfire i've done everything
Great! I want this car added to Forza Horizon 5! (Please reply)
A full size car
Supercharge!
I have one lol
The only thing I didn't like about these cars are the ugly tail lights, never cared for them, they just look ugly to me, but that's just what I think, so to each there own.
They took the tail light design from the 60s impalas. They were round like these but in a different setup
I think that Chevrolet was completing against honda and was leaving the police cars behind. I have a used 2005 Impala with a 3800 engine and it’s up to 209,000 on it ad still going strong. Crown Vics are more durable but the impala especially with the fold down rear seat, The impala is a much more functional family car while the crown vic would be only good for police cruisers. Impala’s gas mileage is awesome for this size vehicle.
I used to drive a 2002 Chevrolet Impala base with a 3400 V6 I liked it that particular car but I didn't like the engine that was in it it drove well my sister purchase this car in 2013
and I got into an accident with it in 2016 and now I am driving an 07 Chevrolet Impala hoping that this car will get me to A & B but I love the 2000 to 2005 Impala especially the ones with the 3800 V6 and supercharged 3800 V6 don't not get an 2000 Impala with a 3400 V6 they suck unreliable you'll regret it get one with a 3800 V6 you won't regret it
I take it your 3400's head gasket blew some point around 120k miles? Despite that happening to me in my '04, it was mostly smooth sailing all the way past 220k miles since then with exception to a $1200 all-at-once deferred maintenance package around 185k miles (tires, front realignment... a couple other things).
Got rid of it just before 232k miles when my mechanic said the cat & tranny were on their final lap. If it was a 3800, I would've maybe considered those insanely expensive repairs. But it was time to move on; starting the mid 20's off with the same car FROM HIGH SCHOOL... time for a change smh...
@@schwenda3727 my sister purchase this Impala with 90,000 miles and it was a salvage titled Impala it blew the head gasket at 95,000 miles my sister and her husband replaced the engine and transmission then a few months down the line replace a starter then a few months after that radiator and other than keeping the maintenance up putting few tires up on their stuff it was good running car I still miss it and I gave it a nickname Casper the reliable piece of shit that's what I gave it because of the color and it kind of was but didn't quite look like a piece of shit but it drove well
If it doesn't over heat they are well know to over heat
3.8 is better than 3.4 from what I heard many times from all 5 mechanics I talked to
16 blocks 😉
These impalas are probably my most hated cars ever made. You can't even compare this to the crown Victoria's. The steering sucks, the seats are uncomfortable and it's nothing but constant maintenance.
I'm gonna rwd swap my impala, with a 5.3 and 4l80e with a mustang 8.8 rear end
I had one the biggest piece of junk ever
Should’ve just put a Ls
Ok we had Dodge , Ford , Chevy now how about Chrysler as the next one because they a few of them as cop cars
Dodge and Chrysler is basically under the same roof, different divisions and brands, and logos, but not too much different.
Although I could be wrong, but as I remembered it, Dodge is the head company, then you got the others as well.
Dodge.
Chrysler.
Plymouth.
Jeep.
Ram.
Fiat.
Was at some point called Diamler Chrysler, when Chrysler and Mercedes Benz, was joined together, since then they have split.
I believe around early 2000's approx 2004 or so.
No performance parts for them either.
Chevy didn't build it, Buick did.
1
3rd damn!!!!
i think the crown victoria is the best and the icon of the police cars
The original Chevy Caprice Classic, thats the king, police depts all over chose to rebuild those cars and use them, even after they were discontinued, and eventually gradually replaced the caprice with the Ford Crown Vic.
And now Chargers, Taurus and Explorers, are most common.
Some Tahoe and Surburban too.
Crown vics were disconnected in 2011. A lot of them are still in service 7 years later. Clearly it's the best out there if departments won't let them go
My '06 P71 will outrun it any day.
these cars are such garbage lol. anyone want to replace transmission sensors all the time lol.
These Limpalas were garbage!! To many problems.
Chevy let us down on this one.
Biggest POS out there! Worth more in scrap value!
P. Doherty
??? That makes as much sense as GM making that thing a police car!
