Apparently around the 2012 year Ford did some kind of dual sprocket system on the water pump and did some changes underneath the timing cover I don’t know how much it impacted the longevity of the vehicle But apparently the water pump is something you don’t really have to worry about till after 125,000 miles they used to fail well before that still it is something I would keep an eye on Like every time you fill your gas tank maybe check your oil and your coolant level
I have a relative whose pump went south around 100 thousand miles. The extended warranty paid for itself. Dealer garage kept if for 2 weeks though. I told him they probably put it on the back burner rather than waste a mechanic for 16 hours and probably more. Lots of quick work with better return on their time spent.

The 3.5 and 3.7 duratech have a major flaw which is a chain driven internal water pump that if fails can make your explorer a huge expensive paper weight. They also have a included ptu that fails for those with awd
Well, after seeing this video 5-6 times, I made the decision and got a 2016 FPIU! It’s white with black steelies. No crash bar though -_- it needs tons of TLC with some of the hardware still installed and broken. Plus all the holes from the lights on top. But other than that, at 107K it’s a good catch. Starts and drives like a dream. Thanks for the input and the heads up! Keep up the great work!
Ford stopped making the 3.7 V-6 after 2017. The 2.3 4 cylinder Ecoboost replaced it. Another nice feature on the 3.7 is that it is port injected. No unused oil is getting dumped back into the intake like on turbos and direct injected motors. I had a 2017 Mustang with the 3.7. If I drove like a grandpa, I would get about 24 mpg around town and 34 mpg on the highway.

Not sure if our department Explorer is just a POS or it's from the abuse it takes but the two vehicles are completely different from a maintenance perspective. I've replaced the fuel purge valve on the wife's Explorer (aside from common wear items like rotors and pads) but that's about it. The PD Explorer on the other hand... failed water pump, failed motor mount, failed HVAC blower motor, failed alternator, and a failed electronic steering rack...there's probably more but I'd have to pull our maintenance records.
Maybe the inspections are stricter for pd cruiser . Does you wife baby it and what kind of pd department is like rural area small town highway big city etcetera .I follow another guy on you tube who goes to the pd auctions and he say big difference between different police departments in what kind of shape the vehicle in .or maybe one of the vehicles was made on a Monday and one on a Friday 😆😂🤣

I'm looking at a bill of over 2 plus grand in parts and labor.. I work for an auto shop and none of our 5 shops have a mechanic willing to get into doing the work.. @SaltyNationalist not as bad as a dod failure from GM..that use to be a 3000 job now it's north of 7k !!! My Pontiac G8, Caprice PPV and Colorado all had DOD failure
@SaltyNationalist DOD is GM's Displacement on Demand cylinder deactivation system. It is on 90% of V8s and now V6s made by GM since 2008, It is intended to save fuel mileage and pass EPA ever changing standards. There's been thousands upon thousands of people reporting having to pay to rebuild their engine or replace it. Chrysler has also copied this feature and named it MDS and fails miserably also. Alot of people turn this off with a tune or swap out the lifters, cam and beef up the heads. I had to rebuild my Colorado and G8 and PPV
While I’ve never been a huge fan of SUV’s in general, if I had to own one, I would own this one. And it would have to be black, and it would have to have the steelies.
One thing to look out for is carbon monoxide leaks in these especially in the interceptor ones, they sell cigarette lighter sensors that would be a good idea to buy if you buy the explorer. Legitstreetcars did a video on the issue
Police dept. by me have had these. After cops have beat them for a couple years they sound like complete shit!! No more listening for crown vic squeaky brakes, you can hear the lifter ticks coming 😂🤣😂
Oh and also the purge valve can fail without warning and cause your car to stall all of these things are the reason I traded my edge which has the same drive train to a 2010 merc la fleet
I have a chance to buy a police interceptor Explorer I'm not sure what year it's got a 3.5 EcoBoost and it's got the ballistic panels in the door which is sweet LOL but all the EcoBoost problems I'm just not sure so watching these videos.

Yeah, they are pretty junky. Water pump sucks, but many other expensive issues. Cat converter, evap vent solenoid (cheap fix), transfer case, steering rack are all weak points. I have one in the garage right now getting an engine with 100k, 1200 idle hours (very low). Weird failure, steel metal in the oil somehow, and got lodged under the cam creating aluminum shavings plugging up the VVT solenoid. Had a valve spring break on another one last year, cams had to come off, 18 hr job. Plus the 3.7l is just plain slow. Sure, I am used to Hemi Chargers, 3.6l Impalas, Ecoboost 3.5l. Plus it reminds me of driving a minivan.
Anyone have high mileage on a 2018 3.7 duratech? Got kne with 9,000 hours idle time and 7,000 drive hours. At 68k miles. Any feedback would be appreciated. Does the 2018 have timing chains issues and what is the life of the water pump?

I have the 2015 Explorer. Had it for two months now. Has a check charging system message. Other than that I love it.
It’s not the same though, the Vic is known as a cop car, regular civilians hardly touched them at their time. The issue is soccer moms and old ladies are riding explorers side by side with the police. As a 2011 Vic owner myself I love vics and explorers - but It’s just not the same.
Took my 2016 explorer sport blacked out from Texas to Mississippi and them Louisiana county mounties are wild lol. I passed a tractor trailer going 75 in a 70 and they pulled out with a Tahoe. They were goin 95mph passed me when I got in front of the semi and almost wrecked into traffic ahead only to pull over into the median turnaround and chill with their lights on. I think they know they fck'd up 💀
Is this all ford explorer, that arent th3 poilce packages ,even the plan jane explorer,? Was thinking about getting one but now if it cost 1800$ i may think twice..
These are cool, but I cannot wait until the Ecoboost V6 versions with 400bhp to become available to the public. Damn thing just says "Run. I dare you.'
When are they coming out?
Maybe years down the line, most likely. I do believe the Ecoboost Explorer Police Interceptors are what is replacing the model mentioned in this video
@@ShingoKirishima1997 Fast until the turbos blow. The 3.5 Ecoboost has already been out making around 365hp, so I doubt the the 3.0 will be too much faster.
OSCAR REYES They've got a few at the radio shop here they look better now in my opinion larger and rear wheel drive .
What did they put the turbo in them?
There is a deep hole on these cars where coolant will leak external also and you can see the leak. I have a 2014 police utility.
35 grand for a new 2020 police version, I think I'm gonna buy it !👍👌
15k for 90,000 miles? what do you all think. looks clean for sale in florida, buy it?
Our PD has a 2013 Explorer Interceptor Utility we bought new. My wife bought a new 2013 Explorer (3.5) about the same time and both have about 130k miles on them.
I jusr bought a 2013 with 68000 miles,I love it. Grear to hear youve had good luck with yours.. i hope I do as,well... I will be doing motr research on issues I meed to watch for!
Have a ford Explorer interceptor 2016 and USB ports don’t work any advise?
tbf, it's got speed and power for being an SUV. More than enough compared to regular civilian models
Do all police interceptors if this vehicle run on Ethanol as well?
Wait, so you’re saying my 2010 Legacy 3.6R is faster to 60 than a explorer Police Intercepter?
Officers have a lot of nerve chasing a commuter car if it is that slow 😂😂😂😂
CleanMotorSport RacingAssociation 😂😂😂
@@bryloneller6096 The Ecoboost engines are faster, closer to mid 6 seconds I think.
Not faster than their radio, though.
Even if it is, the Legacy weighs at least 1,000 lbs less and it doesn't have the wind fighting it as much.
is this water pump 'issue' also on the 3.7 Police Interceptor AWD 'CAR-Sedan' as well?
hay mr.random glad to see your doing well sir and long live the vic
Fun fact: My 2014 PPV is at my local Ford dealership right now having the waterpump replaced as I type this..
And yes, since the making of this video, the price has gone way up..
I'm looking at a bill of over 2 plus grand in parts and labor..
I work for an auto shop and none of our 5 shops have a mechanic willing to get into doing the work..
Therefore, that's the reason why it's at the Ford dealership..🙄 Oiii..
How much did it end up costing you out the door?
@@thevally6127
2700.00..🙄
Trust me.. Twas a bite to the ass..
@SaltyNationalist not as bad as a dod failure from GM..that use to be a 3000 job now it's north of 7k !!! My Pontiac G8, Caprice PPV and Colorado all had DOD failure
@@thevally6127
😱😱😱 Holy chit!!!
That's definitely a bite..
Btw.. What is a DOD??🤔
Thank you at least know now when I buy I need to replace a water pump
While I’ve never been a huge fan of SUV’s in general, if I had to own one, I would own this one. And it would have to be black, and it would have to have the steelies.
I own 2016 fpiu in all black. I hate that people drive slow when i drive behind them 😳😧
If you speed behind them and tailgate them they will usually pull over lol
@@joshcasey6288 i wish. Haha. Unfortunately they just slow waay down.
Have a white pu. Get the stink eye from a lot of people in the street
One thing to look out for is carbon monoxide leaks in these especially in the interceptor ones, they sell cigarette lighter sensors that would be a good idea to buy if you buy the explorer. Legitstreetcars did a video on the issue
Jacob Partin they fixed that issue
@@dylan_5.7 glad to hear that
Dylan Vane No they didn’t. There are still Explorers that was fixed and they still leak in the cabin.
@@atx-cvpi_99 i know the problem is on 3.5 and 3.7 V6 explorer engines but 2.0 turbo fwd have this problem too?
Do the auction cars come with a maintenance record? Water pump replacement already done would be something to look for.
Dont forget to change the PTU Oil every 20-30 thousand miles too.
How do u check & perform preventive maintenance or change a water pump in a ford explorer limited 2013.....?
October 2020.
Police dept. by me have had these. After cops have beat them for a couple years they sound like complete shit!! No more listening for crown vic squeaky brakes, you can hear the lifter ticks coming 😂🤣😂
Ford Police Interceptor Utility’s were not available until the model year 2013 and not 2011, so your title is wrong lol.
A 6to700 headlamp might sway you the parts for those are unreal
Oh and also the purge valve can fail without warning and cause your car to stall all of these things are the reason I traded my edge which has the same drive train to a 2010 merc la fleet
This would be a fun off road vechile, I’m confuse as to why these ford interceptors are cheaper than the explorer, found one for 8k
I have a chance to buy a police interceptor Explorer I'm not sure what year it's got a 3.5 EcoBoost and it's got the ballistic panels in the door which is sweet LOL but all the EcoBoost problems I'm just not sure so watching these videos.
I just did my preventive maintenance water pump change out for my interceptor sedan and it took me 15 hours to fix it ...
Will the tune intake and exhaust from livernoise motorsports fit the interceptor indont see why not also want the 3bar map
I’m hoping to buy a 2020 FPIU locally and i hope i get it.
It has the 3.0L in it, with only 4,000 miles.
That has catalytic converters?

can l put a 2011 P7B in a 2003 P71? engine gone and 2011 body totald!
Does anyone know if the second row seats fold down in the 2013 p i? I know they're not like regular civilian seats. Thanks for the help
How much does it cost to fill your gas
I love these police cars
nice, but i will stick with cv. i havent seen you in awhile, good video. ive been looking at lots of low milage cv for around 15k, dam prices keep going up. up up.
Yeah, get ready to replace the motor too, being they are running 24/7 non stop
Got a 15 Police Interceptor, runs like a champ
The EcoBoost water pump so much cheaper for water pump. I wonder if the 4 cylinder turbo is better option
I definitely said that I was gone change that water pump once I get 1 to prevent that shit
07 CVPI Better watch them do it. You’d never know if they just parked it out back. The WP warranty is not 110,000 miles
@@sammolloy1 I'll get 1 if I don't do it myself
07 CVPI It’s a job but I’m guessing there’s a procedure or a tool to hold the chain so it stays put.
@@sammolloy1 I will do alot more research on it when I get close to getting my hands on 1
Anyone have high mileage on a 2018 3.7 duratech? Got kne with 9,000 hours idle time and 7,000 drive hours. At 68k miles. Any feedback would be appreciated. Does the 2018 have timing chains issues and what is the life of the water pump?
Check that ptu fluid. Ford in its wisdom said its a "lifetime non-service" unit. Yep, sitting there next to the cat, exhaust and tranny cooking doesn't hurt...🦧
I’ve been told they have bigger brakes, and is not an Explorer, it is a Ford Interceptor. Nothing says Explorer.
Yes! I just replaced the front brakes on my 2013 PIU and it has giant two-piston calipers and big thick rotors. The rear brakes look like normal Ford Explorer size brakes. She stops really well though!
Made in chicago diff plant
@@Russian420only thing diff on rear brake job is you have to compress the calipers differently
I don’t think it has the cyclone if it has the chain driven water pump. I have mustang with the cyclone and the water pump is outside.
Pretty sure it's the duratech not the cyclone my 17 has a duratech
Yep, Ford 3.5L 3.7L Duratec V6 Chain Driven Water Pump
My 2016 is amazing
