Back in 09 my buddy needed a >cheap< ride and payed me to find him a reliable car. Found him a '02 Impala 9C1 3.8 police car. it had 215K miles but was only $2000. He drove it for 3 years and sold it to me for $500 @ 275K miles. I drove it for a year till A/C went out sold it for $1500 with 300K miles. NEVER any engine or trans problems !!! LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEE these cars !!!!
Lucky you. My dad's with the 3.8 vibrates violently anywhere above 50mph. Only 90K on the odometer. At 82K the fuel pump had to be replaced. The old fuel pump gave it too much fuel and ruined the catalitic converter, so we had to replace that as well. I think they look nice but poorly made.
i just bought a 2000 chevy impala for $1,050. 124k miles. like-new tires. great shape. elderly couple owned it (80+ year olds). engine oil and transmission fluid clean as a whistle. got the 3.8 v6 (bulletproof engine).

Those taillights were definitely a nod to the impalas of the old days... The wheels were replicas of the 96. The c-pillar window has become a impala standard since 96...to my knowledge
It was pretty crazy how the next bodystyle ran for 10 years, 2006-2016. It was pretty outdated by 2011, but they gave it more life with the 300hp 3.6 in 2012-2016. Very solid cars with great styling.
Great body style. Always loved these and the ones that came after, of which I own one. (2011) Like it's predecessor my 2011 Impala is a spacious tank. Love the look overall.
I had several GM's and loved them all. I particularly like the impalas that replaced this one. That one has truly lived to it's names. The 07-14 impalas gotta be the most common car on the road at least here in detroit
@@TheCheezy303 Most cars now are front wheel drive. My Chevy has been the most reliable vehicle, only second to a Toyota cause you can’t ever kill a Toyota. My buddy has a rear wheel drive BMW. He’s had to replace his driveshaft, and we’ve had to fix his differential twice! Rear wheel drive vehicles cause a lot of unnecessary maintenance.
Came up on my luckiest buy ever, got a 2001 impala 9C1 which the lady selling it said wasnt accelerating well above 20 mph. I got it for 500$ with 127,280 miles and replaced the catalytic converter for 200 bucks. 10K miles and 7 months later and not a single check engine light even with slightly late maintenance.

But honestly if i were in your shoes id get the 2005 impala because itll be a v6 and be less harsh on the gas and itll also be quicker and more nimble than the others. The motor equipped in those is the 3800 bulletproof motor and theyre great. The transmissions are the weak link in those cars but if you got the money, install a transgo shift kit for some upgraded performance in the trans. Mine broke due to the transmission. Had to be scrapped.

some of these imapala's became police cruisers, but they never sold well cuz the crown vic outsold them, because it lacked a v8 engine and it was front wheel drive :(

Like the Pontiac Gran prix copying the s15 or the ford Taurus trying to look like an FD and the 8th gen Impala / Cobalt trying to look like a skyline. But tbf for Toyota I believe they still had the partnership with Mazda when they made that Taurus. Lotta car brands Collab-ed around that time just like how there's a Toyota Chevy cavalier I forget what it's called but it's a thing hell it might just be called a Toyota cavalier same with the ford ranger having a Mazda badge and I can't remember the name of that one either but it exists. All around the late 90's / early 2000's

Jeremy Hynes it was just compressed so many times or copied from VHS using low quality equipment . Look at Seinfeld , it looks great on an HDTV and that was filmed in the 90s. I also have the death wish movies same story there 70-90s

If only. Sigh.. If only it had retained rear drive format it would have been much cooler. The 06-08 Impala SS was so close but front wheel drive doesn't do justice. But would still be cool to have one just because its an SS with a V8. All it needed was rear wheel drive and it would have been so much cooler.
This car could have been put on the RWD V platform. But of course, because of a cost cutting culture, they instead went with the FWD W platform, just like what they did with the cost cutting when they developed RWD versions of the W cars on the RWD V and then RWD Zeta, and then an order from the CEO put them (later on, kept them) on the W platform.

GM did the same thing to an Alpha-based Commodore/Monaro/Ute and Omega-based Impala and Caprice during development. They died during development because of CEO Barra. When will GM learn to listen to the enthusiasts?

Same here. I had a 2004 LS. It was loaded with every single option available. Including dual leather heated power seats and a sunroof. It was gorgeous. But unfortunately it was the most unreliable car I've ever owned. In the 14 months I owned it, I had to replace the rack and pinion, power steering pump, inner and outer tie rod ends, wheel bearing, abs sensor, water pump, idler pulley, serpentine belt, tires, an alignment, a balancing, and a few other things. It still needed struts, ball joints, and control arms. Not mention the gas gauge didn't work properly, the interior would squeak and rattle, and it sometimes would struggle to start when the engine was warm. That car was a nightmare
Duratec Jones , I have an 04 ls right now and I have all the same problems.. like the whole front end needs to be replaced 👎only Thing I like is how it gets up fast when your ready to go ! but I wouldn't recommend buying this car to anyone after my experience it's just one thing after another
Julian Moreno I hope I don't have any issues with mine. It runs smooth and creamy. No jimmy in the steering wheel. Very quiet going down the road. Quite comfortable. Mean looking. Gets 29 MPG all day. Whenever this impala gives up (which hopefully will be at least 3 yrs.) I'm getting a Ford Explorer ex-police car.

I have recently read many forums and saw videos reporting that these 3800 series 2 and 3s from 97 and up had potential problems with fuel or oil leaks causing dangerous engine fires. There were even recalls on them suposedly. The bulletproof 3.8s were before 97 I believe.

No way, if maintained properly, the 3800 V6 is a engine built for torque, I drove a Buick 3800 OHV, and when everything was new on my car, that damn car hauled ass!

Impala 0-60 in 7.5 is almost as quick as the 03 Mercury Marauder. Pretty impressive for a big FWD car of it's time!

The 3800 V6 is one of the most reliable V6 motors ever produced, they are known to last up to 300-400K miles. Sounds like y'all had some lemons.
