Yes, when they speak English they actually speak Portuguese. Blackthorn is a polyglot, his native language is English but he speaks Dutch (he was sailing on a Dutch vessel), Portuguese, Spanish, and Latin (all the prayers and catholic rites were in Latin). That's why he will pick up Japanese so quickly as well.

This series is based on a book by James Clavell published in 1975. Clavell took like 4-5 years to research and write the book. It was made into a TV miniseries in 1980 that aired on NBC for 5 nights. That miniseries starred Toshiro Mifune (the most famous Japanese actor) as Toranaga and Richard Chamberlain as Blackthorne/Anjin. It was a great miniseries, I watched it in 1980 when it aired. This 2024 version is excellent too, I love both. The major characters are based on actual historical people, just given different names. For example, Yoshii Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first Tokugawa Shogun. Ishido is based on Ishida Mitsunari. Tokugawa and Ishida were actual rivals/enemies. Also, Japanese names are given with the surname first followed by the given name (Yoshii Toranaga; Toda Mariko; etc). A lot of people get confused by the names so maybe that will help.

The bit about Portugal and Spain (Castille) dividing up the world by treaty is true, it actually happened. The Treaty of Zaragoza in 1529, which was preceded by the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494. The Portuguese first landed in Japan in 1543, so based on the Treaty of Zaragoza they claimed Japan as theirs because it exists in their half.

Only one wife, but multiple consorts, for child-bearing, like you said. Regarding the language thing, it's exactly as @atomictsarina4378 says.
