The japanese spoken in 1600 japan is more closely similsr to the Shakespearian version of english.. its very formal.. words are longer.. more.. defined. Even modern japanese folks have trouble with it.. they hired all sorts of specialists to ensure this series properly depicted that era of japan as accurately as they could.. even to how they would bow.. or how women walked in kimonos.. how you bow.. all of it.. even the clothing and what it was worn for what day, person place.. rank. Hatamoto is similar to bannerman in europe? These are trusted , vassals of the lord. Its a very high honor.. john blackthorne or the historical person he was modeled after.. may have been the first non Japanese person to ever be given such consideration and honor! I am enjoying your reactions to this awesome series!

18:37 Mariko: Before you meddle with our politics, do remember we live & we die (&) that we control nothing beyond that.
Although the Anjin does not quite grasp the advice dropped here but this was a pivotal moment that comes much later in the series!

In Japanese, yaegaki (The Eightfold Fence) is a metaphor for marriage. It is taken from the oldest waka poem in Japan.
The reason why the number 8 is a sacred number lies in the story of Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the male god who founded Japan, and saved a princess named Kushinadahime by slaying a dragon called Yamatano-orochi.
It is said that when Susanoo built a palace for Kushinadahime to live in after saving her, he saw eight-colored clouds rising and composed a waka poem about them.
The number eight has been used on various occasions as the highest number with extremely powerful powers. To benefit from its magical power, many people have named sacred or prosperity objects after the number eight.

Toranaga's son (Nagakado) was a warlord like his father, so his son had his own little army that was loyal to him and his family.
