24:38 "Is that high rank?" Hatamoto translates to "flag men" or 'Banner men" or" Guardians of the banner". You get the idea. Hatamoto is the highest ranking samurai level that serves the feudal lord. They are expected to die in the service of their lord. Either die in battle or commits seppuku along side his lord when theer lord surrenders. Other levels of samurai are: Goshin (country samurai). They are part time farmer who are given samurai rights. They are the Lord's eyes and ears in the villages. Unlike true samurais, Goshins are only allowed to carry one sword. The lowest level of samurai is the Gokenin (housemen). They work security detail at the lord's house or compound
14:39 "Is that a sword? It's a spear" It is called a Naginata. Noble women are trained in combat because they have to defend the household alongside the men. A naginata combines the katana (sword) for slashing and thrusting with the reach of a pike or spear. They use this to keep their opponents further away. You see them use his in period pairings
26:00 They actually do a bellyflop in the books, Toranaga, John and Mariko gets undressed and gets on the water doing bellyflops. Then John concious talks to himself about how different the culture is and how different is nudity approached in Japan.
I really enjoy your reaction! Emperor is different from Taiko/Shogun, they are top of Samurai (Nobles). Emperor does not to fight over his title, they heir within one family from the start (Imperial family). On the other hand, Buke (Samurai) are nobles so they both exists. Btw Edo is now we call it Tokyo). Please look up in wikipedia if you want more accuracy 😅
And Toranaga just escaped certain death back in Osaka. I think he was celebrating his escape. Living life. He can fight his enemies another day. Tomorrow is Tomorrow. That's how it came across to me anyway. 🙂
For clarification, Japanese names are surname/family name first, followed by the given name. So, Yoshii is the surname/family name, Toranaga is his given name. Toda Mariko = Toda is the surname/family name and Mariko is her given name. Etc.
In re the diving instruction:
1) Toranaga wore him out so he'd lose the race to shore.
2) Finally got him properly bathed and cleaned.
😂😂😂 did not think about that second aspect
Teaching/learning how to dive was showing the beginning of a friendship.

They didn't replace anyone in the first box. That was Fuji-sama.
Yep, Toranaga sat into the last one.

Toranaga just wanted to learn to dive. Diving was not the usual custom to enter a body of water in the old Japans.
Love your Videos :-)

@@BarbaraPanigot Very nice take and wholesome take :)
hello! thanks for the reaction. To clarify, Hatamoto is a rank. He is basically his vassal now, close to the ranks of samurai
