I think the craziest part is that The Day Before isn't even the first scam game of it's type. Every year or some game comes along on kickstarter saying: "We're making a game that allows you to go where ever you want, do whatever you want, and interact with players all over the world. You'll have so much freedom and choice!"
And every single time they get funded 2000% over the initial kickstarter. Then when you finally see gameplay after 4 trailer delays, it looks like a shitty unity asset flip and the dev runs with the money.

As I've gotten older, I've become less in touch with the latest gaming news and the hottest upcoming game releases. However, I still consider myself enough in touch to at least have some knowledge about the most hyped games coming out. So imagine my surprise when, during the last few days, I've started hearing about "The Day After", a game which was supposedly one of the most wish-listed games on Steam turning out to be a massive scam. What is this game? Where did it come from? Why the hell were people so hyped for it?

    • @originalscreenname44

There’s one thing about this game that isn’t brought up in this video that’s actually kind of important to the whole scam thing. If the game was advertised correctly and it was just a shit game the devs could’ve gotten away with it. The important part though is that they literally lied about the genre of the game. It was advertised and shown in trailers to be an open world survival zombie mmo like dayz. They literally had the open world mmo and survival tags on steam before release. Turns out that it’s just a shitty asset flip extraction shooter with no open world or survival elements. They literally removed every piece of marketing that showed any open world survival gameplay after the release.

It's kind of funny how much overlap there is in creating good horror and getting people to fall for these game scams. You give just enough information to raise interest in what is happening then withhold information and induce the viewer to fill in the gaps. Raise the expectations of the game and then they will buy, no matter how credible it may be. The biggest difference being the former induces dread while the latter entices one to buy something; though they will likely feel financial dread later.

It's the people who keep buying Assassin's Creed games that baffle me. Maybe I'm crazy, but when I play a story-based series of video games I'd like the story to actually f*****g go somewhere. The overarching plot of the series has just been pottering about for a decade now since they can't risk bringing it to a close when the games still- mystifyingly, continue to make money.

Yeah, Im not joking. The antagonist who was teased at the end of AC3 was defeated by Desmond's son, so the conflict has already been over besides the looping plot-point of Templar Vs Assassins.
The appeal of AC games is jumping between time periods and experiencing different historical settings. Ubisoft's problem is that other games have started doing AC's thing but more efficiently.
They're planning to make an AC game in Japan...in a market where you can play well made games with that same premise that'll probably be better than Ubisoft's output: Sekiro or Ghost of Tsushima.

Personally, I never really got into the cycle of Hype for a game, then Disappointment as it fails. Partly because I rarely buy day 1 unless it's something I'm certain will be good.
Hell, in some cases, I benefit from the failure. Shit like Anthem and Cyberpunk I just waited until the price dropped to almost nothing, got it, and took what enjoyment I wanted without forking over the extra cash.
It really is almost worrying how "Gamers" never learn the lesson of not overhyping a game and always waiting to buy something. Especially with AAA games that are almost always broken on launch and take some time to be put into working order.
Indie titles I can understand a little, they do need that early support and people can accept jank and flaws if it's still a good product. So it can be easy to fall victim to the scams or fund a project that quickly falls apart. But at the same time, it's up to the Dev's to try and prove that they are more than capable of making the finished product if they do get that support.

Second of all, who cares if Spidey won an award or not? It doesn't change the fact that the game is good. Nobody needs Geoff Keighley's approval to tell them that, especially when there's always some dumb bullshit about what games receive favoritism in the nominations anyway.
