As a motorcycle mechanic for almost 50 years, 30 of them spent either working for or owning a HD shop, I'd like to share the following with you: 1) You have one of the best Sportster generations (91-03) ever made. They had the Evo XL engine, the good transmission, and good cases and chassis. (The older XLs had the weaker trans, and the pre -86 still had the Ironhead motor, which tended to run hot and gall pistons. The 04 and later bikes have the rubber mount motor, which has engine cases with issues of their own.) I own 4 Harleys from across the spectrum (71 Shovelhead 74" chopper, 82 FXR w/86 Evo motor, 07 1200 Sporty, 72 Ironhead 1000 Sporty) 2) The S&S E is one of the best street carbs available, and my personal favorite. 3) Lose the drag pipes. Yeah, they sound and look good but believe me when I say you are giving up a fair bit of available midrange power running them. (I had this proven to me by a dyno wizard we call "The Professor", using my FXR , a handfull of carb jets, and 6 different exhaust systems including 1 3/4" and 2" drags.) Best way to go is either equal-length staggered duals with free-flowing mufflers, or a well-designed 2-into-1 like the Thunderheader or one of the Supertrapp units. Damn, didn't mean to get so long-winded. Hope you find this helpful.
I got an 05 roadster 1200. I've rebuilt almost everything. Made my own clutch tool, do all my own work. I put 22,000 on it in 2 years. Bought it with only 7 grand on the odometer. I ride it hard, take care of it, and I'll never let it go.
@J2I3H I've put 19k in 2 years on my honda shadow and am currently rebuild alot of it including refreshing my valves. I have taken care of this bike but I've also ridden it hard. I've gone offroad, out ran some "people" a couple times. Destroyed the rear brake arm and rod assembly. Honda shadows especially of my model and year range are known to be bullet proof cruisers. But when you ride like a jackass 24/7 it wears the bike out. Yes I could ride this bike another 19k miles in this shape no issue just like he probably could have done too. But the potential for irregular wear leading to more issues down the road prompted him to get the jump on it and rebuild it now. It's a evo v twin. It's half the parts maybe even a third of the parts of most modern bikes. Simple, fairly cheap, and if you want to run it into the 6 digits lifespan probably necessary to be a little ocd about maintenance. Especially if your gonna beat on them like my road dawg up here.
My dad had an '88 1200 with cams, carb, head and suspension work but no extra chrome tat. Someone told him once "That's a rider's bike that is". He was dead pleased.
Honestly, You can't just call this a review. This is much more; this is a film celebrating a day in the life of a motor enthusiast. Sure, functionally, this reviews that this is a fun bike. But what you've captured is a perfect driving day , the best parts of whippin around and being loud in the countryside, the brief moments you drive past natural beauty but only have a short glimpse until you're farther down thinking about something else. This was a film and it was great.
That's a beautiful bike 😊,better than the new harlies ,this bike is not a shop bought in the garage for 10 months of the year cause don't want to get dirty bike ,I would love this bike,,fun in bikes again,,😊
I actually just got a brand new Iron 1200 and love it. It feels a bit small but at 5'9, 190lbs it's not by any means awkward. Super nimble and quick response on the throttle. Overall I really enjoy it, don't really care that a lot of HD guys consider it a "girl's bike"... those same guys don't put down anything near the miles I do, and they can barely ride in a straight line let alone rip corners and weave it around town like a bicycle. My only gripe with it is that it doesn't take wind very well on the highway. At only about 550lbs the wind tends to want to push you across lanes if you're not careful.
It’s nice to see another rider pushing their Sportster hard, I have a 1995 1200 & also ride mine pretty hard & the bike just begs for more hard riding, these are awesome bikes, great vid, new sub here from Philly suburbs!
Sometimes I click on these videos to cringe at the wannabe’s. But this is the greatest review I’ve ever seen lmao. Those evo sporty motors are no joke bulletproof 🤘🏻
I bought a 96 1200 Sportster in 2013 for $3,500. It had 24k on the odometer. Didn't ride it much for various reasons and it sat out under a cover at my old apartment a lot. Tried to sell it three times on Craigslist for $2,500. Even had a local shop offer it for sale for a while. Fast forward to 2021. Finally have a house with a garage. Changed oil and plugs. Ran Seafoam in the gas and oil. Changed the oil again after 50 miles and even that oil was very dark. New Air filter...and surprise, surprise it runs like a champion. Took off the old, oversized crappy windscreen that was on it and removed the backrest pad and it looks a lot better. After riding it more I discovered what Sportys are all about: 0-60 in about 4 seconds, shifting to 2nd around 40mph. It loves full throttle...Now, I'm really starting to appreciate it and riding every day. Thank God it didn't sell. I'm keeping it for the rest of my life!
I have a 2013 1200 custom. Converted to chain drive, Bassani pipes, K and N in the stock air box and mapped. I will die before I give it up. Great review of the legend.
I have an 03 Anniversary XL1200 in black. 15,000 miles and runs quite strong. May have cams, IDK as I got it used. Looks stock other than the pipes are Vance and Hines. Will hit 100 fast and easy, but no wheelies...
Finally someone who drives it like a man...!! Not like the 10000 other Harley videos on UA-cam where someone talk for 10 min then 1 min of idle... 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮. Thank you!!! 🥰👍👍👍
Just picked up a 100% original 1988 Sporty 1200. First year for the 1200 motor, w/4 speed and chain drive. Bought it from the original owner who is 81 years old! I swapped the stock buckhorns for some flat track bars and put a set of drag pipes on and jetted it, and saved the old parts of course. The paint is all stock and flawless. Did I mention it only has 19K for miles? Killer score, and it looks great next to Emma, my Shovelhead.
Yeah. I dunno about you, but for me some of the Harley guys are the worst for ripping on sportsters. A "mini bike". I just leave and tell em when your young you want mustang's and Camaros. When you get older you that's when you get a mini van.
I thought that pushing a Sportster hard was holding the throttle wide open while shifting & feather clutching it. The 1986 model can do that very well. Not a good idea on the newer models.
I've got an 2003 sportster, it's got n4 Andrew's cams, Vance and Hines pipes, mikuni hsr42, and a screaming eagle intake. It will run it some of the big bikes outrun the small ones real bad. My dad said it's probably one of the faster sportsters in my area. It is almost to fun to ride.
You clearly haven't ever been on or around a fast bike. The 03 is a slug, regardless of cams, tune, compression ratio, pipes, just an all around slow bike. I personally have an xl883 and most dirt bikes I've owned will outrun the 03 sportster, mine rides like a 79 Honda 200, but about 300 pounds heavier. I'm glad you like yours though, that's all that counts really.

Damn buddy, this video is just awesome, not the first time watching this tbh. I got a basically the same bike, 1200 XLH also from year 2000, same year as me! I just love this bike man, I’m from Germany and mine was drivin‘ around in the USA till 2009 and was imported by the previous owner. But that’s the shit, everybody here got km/h on the speedo but I got the mph for the right feeling dude ! Even though imperial system is actually pretty much bullshit it’s Harley-Davidson man, it just gotta be like this! Anyhow, it was still 100% original when I bought in 2021 but I just changed so much stuff by myself to make it look sick. Handlebar, turn signals, footrests from behind to the front, new shocks, lifting the tank, new headlight, new seat, side mount leather case. Still in progress of course. But always keeping the original parts to keep the value, if u know u know. I just love it, always taking care of everything by myself (I‘m a Shipmechanic, studying Maritime Engineering, so I should be able to handle some little engines like those), also the lovely ‘92 Heritage Softail EVO of my dad. It’s just a feeling and lifestyle. For me same like you, I like the shirts and the bikes but I am not fully leather and metal kinda guy. Idk it just felt right to share a bit below this video. If not here, where else ? RNFNR! !!!]; )
? 2400? Sweet deal man. Love it!!! I’ve been looking around and I couldn’t find a 1200 anywhere near that. Ended up getting an 883 with over $2000.00 in upgrades .. Vance and Hines exhaust, $800.00 in saddle and back rest , detachable Harley windsheild, Harley Gear indicator, ETC.. $3500. It’s an 09 with 5500 miles on it.. damn thing still looks new.
Hell yeah I can dig it😎 Just bought myself a 2006 sportster 1200 custom put 14 inch chrome Burly bars Custom tail light Bob rear fender new white walls love it!!! I subbed 👍🏻
Looks like you're in my neighborhood railroad tracks on Old Country Road right down my alley I love a Sportster 1200 And just because of all that I subscribed today
When I have a bit more time I swap stories of my '91(1st of the 5speeds)XLH Hope you're letting her have full Syn (and letting her warm up) to cope with the "no mercy" approach Ay! Good to See a Sportie ridden properly. High regards from New Zealand. : )
The Sportster is my favorite H-D bike. Plenty of power, no frills and cheap - the way a bike should be. A lot of Harley guys look down their nose at them, but I disagree. When I got my first bike, I would havebought one, but the dealer wouldn't let me test ride it. I ended up on a Triumph. On my 5th one now, but I have nothing against Harley-Davidson.
Owned bikes since my teens, but had an incomplete spinal cord injury/surgeries in '05 (losing about 1/3rd of my leg strength), and had a tough time with the weight of a bagger I rented in 2013, so I rented a sporty 48 1200 a few years later. Had a great time with it, but 3 days ago, my son in law told me his neighbor is selling his low miles '98 1200 custom for $1,000, so I'm buyin it!!! Soft bags, wind screen (comin' off), but all the power a 64 year old dude could need. I was about to buy an old (700 lb.) Wide Glide for around 5k, but for $4,500 total (45 degree rake kit kit, seat, and a 21" front 40 spoker), I can turn this 500 lb. bike into my dream cruiser. My perfect gimp ride! ;) chopper-kit-usa.com/07/sports26.jpg
Hi Scott, congratulations on the new bike! I'm glad that you are still riding even though the heavy bikes weren't right for you after your injury. Enjoy!
Ride it like you stole it , thats my way .......owned my sporty since 97 its a 1996 still runs mint and never lets me down and i ride hard always ......
I picked up a mint XL1200C with 6k miles and lots of extras for $3500, from a wealthy biz owner who had a bible sized book of taking it in for lube, tune, etc. I luv it! But while it is a street only scooter I luv my 73 & 78 Iron Heads even more!
Funny shit man. I'm definitely subscribing lol. I'm in debate whether my next bike will be a harley 1200 sporty. I had a vulcan 800, and ofcourse loved it, but I've wanted a harley since a kid. So I may go for it. Just font wanna be disappointed lol
Got a 94 1200, it's not the coolest looking and not up to par with local fakers. I love it, favorite rider ever. I like the handbars. I give my old girl lots of salt to, it loves to be ridden like I mean it and responds well.

@@julianmay5653 I appreciate you for sharing your thoughts on your sportster and I’m glad you liked the video. Ride safe out there my friend. Enjoy!
?
Nice! Enjoy it
One of my clients offered me the deal of the century. An 08 sportster 1200xl with 640 miles that starts right up. 2000 bucks
I got a 88 Evo 1200 Sportster 9000 on clock for 600 bucks and it starts right up
Hell yeah I can dig it😎
Just bought myself a 2006 sportster 1200 custom put 14 inch chrome Burly bars Custom tail light Bob rear fender new white walls love it!!!

Thanks man. Enjoy your bike.
really good audio
Thank you! I feel like the exhaust sound is at least half the experience of riding a motorcycle.
I’m in love with this bike I think.
This must be the Oklahoma part of New Jersey
Absolutely! Most people don't realize how diverse of a landscape NJ is.
@@HonJazzz I live in Ocean County and ride mostly Ocean and Monmouth County. Looks a whole lot different than where you are haha Where are you?
@@Smackked This was filmed out in Phillipsburg NJ. Lot's of good riding out there.
It looks just like iowa with the red barn.
@@CORYSart I live in the same area as HonJazzz. Phillipsburg and all of Warren County is the perfect place to go for a ride
This is the manliest mandude channel that i had subsribe.
Dude I must have been living under a rock this guys awesome, I was thinking ab getting a sportster 1200 but know I gotta😂
Thanks haha now you need one ☝🏻
When I have a bit more time I swap stories of my '91(1st of the 5speeds)XLH
Hope you're letting her have full Syn (and letting her warm up) to cope with the "no mercy" approach Ay!
Good to See a Sportie ridden properly. High regards from New Zealand. : )
Cheers mate! I bet you have some nice riding roads out where you are.
I'm watching this video, in the middle of winter, man. That sucks. And inspiring, so if you can ride on!
The winter is one of the best times to buy a motorcycle. Prices are lower
You should do a video riding through that corn field.
@@matrox hahaha
The Sportster is my favorite H-D bike. Plenty of power, no frills and cheap - the way a bike should be. A lot of Harley guys look down their nose at them, but I disagree. When I got my first bike, I would havebought one, but the dealer wouldn't let me test ride it. I ended up on a Triumph. On my 5th one now, but I have nothing against Harley-Davidson.
@@ikkenhisatsu7170 Yeah I’m glad we see eye to eye
3:41 I crashed my virago here one day, and then blew it up right outside of frenchtown later that season :)
Haha small world
Fun video...man I like that Sportster.... is that Concorde Purple Pearl? I had that on my '01Road King...love that color...
@@Riff156 oh yeah it’s the best
I love my 2014 sportster 1200v. I’ll keep her forever.
It’s a great bike
That's a very nice looking Sporty.
Thank you
Are you the guy who made the car noises in the bucket?
Yuuuup!
You're doing great 😊 keep going 👍
Thank you so much 😁
I bought a black one new in 2000. RIP buddy.
I am convinced I am getting a 1200! First video i watched about it. Was going for a dyna but the insurance is insane
You’ll love it! Enjoy and stay safe out there.
@@HonJazzz cheers!!
Truly the best Harley sportster 1200 review ever. Testing it’s durability at beyond its intended purpose. lol.
@@Anthony071177 haha I’m glad you enjoyed
Enjoy!
@@HonJazzz Thanks, and much appreciated, you crazy-fun somebitch! ;)
@@scottdouglasmaclachlan4792 hey Scott, was that image of your actual bike?
Finally. Some good content
I just picked up a 2005 sportster and I wouldn’t trade it for the world😂 it’s a great bike!
Enjoy my friend
Sporty is the only HD I'll ever have.
Ride it like you stole it , thats my way .......owned my sporty since 97 its a 1996 still runs mint and never lets me down and i ride hard always ......
That’s the way to live
That look over to the camera and then concentration. When I saw him pull the question I said, my man! Denzel style
Yuuuup
They tend to blow the rear cylinder head gasket.
What are those pipes called? That and the jetting is how you got that sound right.
These are screaming eagles
What diameter
Thats cool that there is still rural land in jersey. I (being from Texas) assumed all of jersey was city.
Oh yeah thankfully it’s not all city.
Love this channel
I picked up a mint XL1200C with 6k miles and lots of extras for $3500, from a wealthy biz owner who had a bible sized book of taking it in for lube, tune, etc. I luv it! But while it is a street only scooter I luv my 73 & 78 Iron Heads even more!
@@kennyh5083 outstanding! Sounds like a good buy
I like you man, you seem honest
Thank you
Love the video, not trying hard at all, being real is hard to come by these days
Thank you, I’m glad you appreciate it.
Lol, that dude, straight up, had an armful of White Claw.
Honestly that's not beating on her, we call that the old Italian tune up. It's good for engines.
Definitely 💯
Nice motorcycle
how high is the steering wheel? Record something else with Sportster because it's fun to watch. If you ask tall are you?
Not a harley guy (or even a street/cruiser guy) but your 1200 is pretty sweet my dude.
Thank you!
Funny shit man. I'm definitely subscribing lol. I'm in debate whether my next bike will be a harley 1200 sporty. I had a vulcan 800, and ofcourse loved it, but I've wanted a harley since a kid. So I may go for it. Just font wanna be disappointed lol
Thank you! I think you’re gonna like it.
@@HonJazzz for sure! My best bud just got one too, he loves it. I'm sure I will too. And, definitely man, keep up with the funny lol
Rubs have given the 1200 a bad rap. Back in the day the 1000cc sportster was the bike to have.
Got a 94 1200, it's not the coolest looking and not up to par with local fakers. I love it, favorite rider ever. I like the handbars. I give my old girl lots of salt to, it loves to be ridden like I mean it and responds well.
Yeah it’s all about enjoying the ride
Sweet harley lad you still have her
Awesome mate , how big are those handlebars?
Chill fuck'n dude with a taste for cool bikes
Subbed
Thank you
Do you have a link to the bars you have?
Outstanding video!!👏👏
Thank you!
Which handlebars do you have?
