In fact japanese have a word for them, which is "okama". They even appear in One piece and Gintama. I don't mind because they don't shove political corectness down your throat and i hope that that is the case with Shenmue as well.

They probably only kept the female VA in english because they didn't want to bother re-voicing a character from a 19 year old game. I hope however that they will get a male voice actor for him in the english version of Shenmue 3.
It'd be really lame if they decided to make the character an actual woman. I think it's great and interesting what they decided to do with the character. The world of Shenmue feels more real and alive with unique character think these. The world has a little bit of everything just like real life. And that's cool.

Awesome video! I barely remember Yuan when I played the original, and didn’t notice she was supposed to be a he. Too busy racing ducks! I’m playing the HD remake now and loving it after all this time, even more than I thought I would. I kinda hope we get a Special Edition at some point in the future, doubtful I know but would still be amazing. They could expand some areas, add more collectibles and recast the English voicing for a more accurate male Yuan.
Back in 2004 i started to learn Japanese because i hated the English dubbed voices and now i can enjoy both original games in Japanese with no censoring and with all original brand names and learning Japanese has made my life better with many other games with similar issues and also obviously Japanese exclusive games.
That's awesome! I wish I had the patience and ambition to learn another language. I used to prefer the English dub, and for Shenmue I that was really the only English translated version available for over a decade, until the Undub mod by the community came out. After I learned what was lost and censored in the localization, I completely prefer the Japanese version now and feel it is canon. I've played the original Japanese Dreamcast versions of the games, and only know what to do and what they say based on playing the English version and by doing research on what they're actually saying. I feel those are the definitive versions of the games since they are completely uncensored and don't have the bugs that the remaster has.
As someone who understands Japanese, I can say with some certainty that Yuan was never meant to be a trans-anything. He's just a gay man in the 80s. He doesn't look trans and doesn't express anything to suggest he's trans. They made him a woman because the west wasn't "ready" for an obviously gay character yet in 2001, and the target audience in the west was considerably younger than those playing it in Japan, where it was more meant to be an older-teen and adult game. In the Shenmue III blurb, "talking like the opposite sex" doesn't mean the same thing in the Japanese that it does in English, as there are words and manners of speaking and grammar that are considered "feminine", where in the US, that would be taken as "trying to up-pitch your voice" which is something mostly just trans people do. In Japan, effete gay men often talk in the feminine style without actually changing the pitch of their voice. I'm glad they kinda kept both versions of Yuan in the game. Yuan as some kind of weird knife-loving maybe-lesbian with an ambiguous relationship to a huge dumb fat man is easily as interesting, even if it wasn't the original intent.
Yeah many people who aren't Japanese and not familiar with Japanese culture confuse Yuan for being transgender. Same! The original Yuan is such a better and cooler character & villain! The male voice fits a lot better too since he has a man's body and clearly looks like a transvestite. The female voices are so out of place! Really wish everything that was censored was decensored, but I am happy enough they restored Yuan! They could have easily used the Japanese PAL Dreamcast female voice, but put in the extra work to make him uncensored!

It seems nowadays they're trying to recton Yuan's gender change as times have changed. In the Shenmue anime, Yuan is a male in both the English and Japanese versions of the show! So that means, we now have the first ever English voice for male Yuan!
There are some people I've seen that find it offensive that the only gay characters in the game are the two main antagonists and didn't like the violent confrontations with them. But technically, there is another gay character, Dorie Gordie who is actually the strongest arm wrestler in the game! It is also said that it is impossible to defeat him at the 100 dollar bet without using a turbo controller! So there's a positive representation of a gay character in the game! I don't think they really cared about Ryo and Ren beating up a woman, since Ryo beats up Chunyan, the woman street fighter in the game.

The free battle audio might be Lisle's English audio rather than the female Japanese voiceover. Some players are reporting that even with the Japanese dub selected, the free battle audio used is almost always that of the English dub anyway (with the only exceptions being mid-free-battle cutscenes).
At least Sega of Europe/America Acknowledged she was a transvestite. gotta give them props for that. Nowadays they could probably get away with it though as crossdressing and transgender is more accepted by society. Back in the day it was deemed too offensive to some westerners. This sounds like a strict improvement now, and more like what the developers actually intended. It's good that they are trying to get rid of the previous censorship of the game for Western audiences, because it was definitely in poor taste before.

This suggests that he's European and possibly Chinese as well, and that he's a citzgender man. This pretty much debunks the idea that Yuan is transgender, although we've never heard what pronouns Dou Niu and him use to refer to him. If they used female pronouns, then he'd definitely be a transgender woman. Idk if in the localization his name was mistranslated or changed to "Yuan" on purpose to give him a more feminine name because of the gender change. Even if he was trans, it makes more sense that people would still refer to him as a "he", (well besides Dou Niu and the Yellow Heads) since the game takes place in 1987 China, and Ren would especially refer to Yuan as a man no matter what since he's a big enemy of his, and it fits his character. Being transgender also wasn't as accepted back then as it is now, especially in 1987 China.

It just uses the same prefix because both involve the person changing from one thing to another (like a transcontinental flight). It is a bit more personally involved the cosplay though.

It's also important to remember that the game takes place in the 80's, where transsexual males were seen & acted very differently than they do today.

Shenmue II wasn’t released in English on the Dreamcast, the English dub was introduced in the Xbox port.

Even the people who try to pass as the opposite gender aren’t the same as a transgender person because unlike the transgender person the transvestite trying to pass is doing it for their own satisfaction and enjoyment, not because they believe they body and mind don’t match up.

Ah yes, because when a creative team decides to make a character a gay male crossdresser with an obviously male voice, it can only be due to some mob of SJWs forcing them to do it. It can't possibly be because that's the character they wanted to create in the first place.
Let people make games the way they wanna make them. Who knows? The game might turn out to be more fun that way. Imagine that. Games being fun. Y'know, like how they used to be before microtransactions and story content sold for extra as DLC.
Would have been great as SJW will likely love it praising the game because of its "diversity"
