Best episode ever!!! I love the videos with Pops hanging around and helping his goofball knuckleheaded offspring AND oddball-ish engine swaps. A+++, Kev-dawg!
i did this a few times back in the 70S and 80s. I live near Lake Erie and boat engines were rather plentiful. Most were small block Chevys, but you could occasionally find a 302 or 460. One very common one was a MerCruiser that was an inline 6 Chevy. One gotcha that is easily overlooked, and I learned the hard way, is that there are left hand rotating engines in the marine world. I helped a friend put a marine 6 cylinder in a Chevy Nova. Things seemed...weird, during the install. It was only when we fired it up that we noticed that it spun the wrong way. That's when the little "hmm??" things made perfect sense.
I've seen people re-learn about counter rotation motors when they try and use cheap car starters on boats. It'll bolt up and spin just fine, but it won't start.

That is one of many reasons why I built myself a gantry crane. Cherry pickers get top heavy and if one seal decides to give up, game over. If you make the mistake of having part or all of your body under the engine (or whatever you're lifting), you're over. I designed and welded mine together in in a week. It'll lift a ton all day long. It'll probably lift a lot more but I haven't tested it with more weight. It cost me about $400 bucks for everything but that was before steel prices went to the moon. I used a Harbor Freight 1500# 110v winch which works great. The only thing I didn't trust was the cheesy looking cable that was on it so I replaced the lousy 3/16th cable with 1/4" stainless steel anti roll cable and 2 5k snatch blocks. It's slower now but with an fully dressed Ford 429 on the hook, the winch hardly slows at all under the weight. Very cool!

I am glad to have found a video of someone doing this. Ive done car engines into boats and boat engines into trucks but never seen videos on it.
love how you showed what was actually wrong with the motor and explained why you immediatly noticed how it was rebuilt. Thats really helpfull for a lot of people! 👍👍
Has a good C4 on the engine laying in the back, those boat engines have cast iron timing covers too. Fords C4, C6 and AOD were damn good transmissions if maintained and bands adjusted as they should have been, give that truck some timing and it will come alive lol. Love the swap the old boat motor will be happy in there
AODs were weaksauce with even moderate power levels until the end of the production run when they got the wide bands and better internals
Aod's pretty much suck
Very cool. Reviving an old pickup, thats still in great shape, with patena of course. Nice job!
That would of been a shame if this truck got crushed that bed and interior is in immaculate condition just wow 👌 👏😍👍@Junkyard Digs
...it's a Ford...they usually don't run long enough to get dirty
@@TheWolfsnack 🤣🤣 if you say so
@@TheWolfsnack .. Working ranches in Southwestern USA own Fords and Chevs. Chevs to 'go into town' and Fords to do all of the heavy, dirty, overloading Ranching work..
It’s a ford, should have crushed the Pos!
@@blogengeezer4507 that’s because the Chevy will actually get you to town and back!
The sound of the doors opening and closing brought back memories of my dad's old Fords. That distinct sound
The look on dad's face when he stuck the boot into it was pure gold, great video folks.
I think when Kevin mentioned the "bottom trim" it was a great time to segue in to a promo for Manscaped...:)
dammit why didnt I think of that!
Amphi-150? No? I’ll see myself out.
I think it is funny
LOL
That actually works.
With removable prop and pontoons!! 👍👍👍
Amph-150 has a bit catching sound.
I like how kevin was being all careful not to snap the exhaust bolts off in the junk engine. I'd have hit them all with the impact and not worried about breaking the bolts off in the heads of the old engine
The bond between father n son is the most sacred of all bonds.....very inspiring god bless from the slums of St.Paul
It wonderful to videos like this, there is a whole generation who has never seen or have no cluof old school mechanics such as this.
You know he means business when the new balances come out
Boy does this swap bring back memories. I dun it. Turnt out great the engine was incredible.
It is always a good day when Junkyard Digs posts a video.
Good job mate. Just to see the smile on your dad's face. Priceless. Paddy from Ireland. Best of luck for the future.
I bought a 73 F100 Ranger longbed 2wd for $500 in 1995. It was being used as a farm truck and I had to search down the previous owner to get the title "fixed". 3 on the tree, manual steering, manual brakes. I rebuilt the 360 in the apartment parking lot (as a total noob to working on cars). Also painted it myself. Loved that truck.
Dude that intake added like 30 horsepower and then headers! This thing is gonna be quick.
As always, y’all do an excellent job on everything that you do. I believe I am not the only one that would be saying this, but I definitely want to see more of this truck! Much love as always.
So the truck floats now right? 😄 Loving the shenanigans!
YOU AND YOUR POPS IS THE BEST DUO FIXING CARS!!!!! Salute king I wish I had a dad!
When I was a kid I remember a guy with a Volvo240 sedan with a Volvo diesel boat engine. It was a pretty neat rig!
It would've been hilarious if it was a counter rotating 302
Who needs more than one forward speed?
I don't think it would move very far or well.
This is now an experiment that needs to happen
That would only be funny IF it was a manual or a four-speed shift, automatics only work in one direction due to the torque converter/front pump assembly in the tranny...
@@disabledusnvet.8771 I didn't think about the pump spinning backwards, just the converter not working well at all. Good point.
A powerglide reverse gear is the same ratio as 1st so if you hate fuel mileage you can do 60.
At least the a marine cam and truck cam is almost the same ment for pulling
Best episode ever!!! I love the videos with Pops hanging around and helping his goofball knuckleheaded offspring AND oddball-ish engine swaps.
A+++, Kev-dawg!
i did this a few times back in the 70S and 80s.
I enjoy you and all the others too . I remember all the car and trucks when I was a kid and I am now 70 thank you
Keep the faith, Puddin! Your fans are thankful for your educational/inspirational videos! Till Valhalla!
22:28 tell pheonix and anyone else, dont stand under forklift forks, or any other load supported by hydraulics, especually fast acting ones, theyre also fast acting when they fail
Very cool!
People be like: Ls swap! 2jz swap! K swap!

I have an OMC Cobra 2.3 in my 84 ranger. Hey, it beat the slobbering 2.0 liter that came out of it.
I also loved that he explained why my coolant was rusty color even after flushing it 19 times.
@@monshuracing Had a 3.0L in my boat. Previous owner couldn't put a new thermostat in since it was corroded so bad. I had to remove it and media blast it to replace it lol
Boat motors have cams designed to make torque at high rpm for a long time. Good for burnouts, just saying
Engine
A motor is a machine that converts one form of energy (in this case chemical) to rotational energy. An engine is a type of motor
@@garageofscrap a "motor" requires energy to make it operate., an "engine" produces energy.
@@midixiewrecked7011 noting produces energy. They convert it. An electrical motor takes electrical energy and converts it to kinetic energy (in the form of rotation). An engine takes chemical energy stored in the fuel, and converts that to kinetic energy (again, in the form of rotation). They are both types of motor
@@garageofscrap not actually a motor though. That's just pure laziness.
Cool project, and a family affair at that! Families that wrench together, stick together. Well done.

"Get this 12-volt Decepticon ass, outta here" I dunno why,but the way you said that made me laugh, awesome video as always!
I so can’t wait to see more videos about this truck. I want to see it all fixed up
Small note, "someone put cruise control in it"
Probably the dealer when new; it was an orderable dealer installed option.
I installed one I purchased from Sears, on my 77 Ford Econoline van. It worked very well, even on my stick shift tranny.
One of dad's ford trucks had a dealer installed cruise control on the turn signal shaft, seems like there was a vacuum can and chain attached to the throttle, might have been the 72 390?
@@mikekokomomike that is the setup my 78 had, switch box clipped onto the turn signal lever, vac can, chain, and a vacuum throttle pull off pot too.
That was 100% the best sponsor intro I have seen on youtube. I am new here and this isn't what I normally come to YT for but I guess that all changed today. Keep it up ur killin it!
Putting junk into other junk - free.
The synchronized head nodding of father and son once the engine fires - priceless.
Very satisfying to watch. The truck looked kind of beautiful when it was finally driven. Excellent video.
Guess you didn’t need a “boat tank” for gas! 😂
Great job JYD family!!!
God Bless
😎
When you get it fixed, have a race between your Dad and Luke's Dad.
Old classic Fords. Boy, brings back memories of me and my grandfather in his 78 Ford F100. 😊❤
I wouldn't mine having that dodge van in the background in the intro... "LunchBox" !
Absolutely love your videos brother, I recently had to shut down my own hvac business due to an injury and been laid up/struggling and I came across one of your videos and have been on a three day binge watching (and learning). Cars are my passion and as I try and find a new career your videos have made me realize if I'm not working around cars I just won't be happy lol. Keep at it, and I love how you help people (grand national etc.) I always tried to pro Bono work for those that can't afford it to get them heat or AC on.... ps selling a 2016 eco boost transit ((my work van) for a good price if you know anyone needed a van, can't hurt to mention it. 👍
Love to see a great family come together over a car, make new memories :-)
$100 for that engine was a steal, looking on Ebay those engines are going for around $3k. Plus it being better built than your typical 302. Awesome project.
You can buy a reman marine 302 for that. They usually have heavier rods, premium bearings and a cam ground for low end torque. The 7.3L powerstroke diesel had better injectors and tune but was the same otherwise.
@@theupscriber65 - Base car cams are one step bigger than truck cams and marine cams are one step bigger than base level car cams... maybe even more with newer emissions car weak cams... also compression ratio is higher, pistons have shallower dish, and 89 octane gas is specified... plus brass core plugs... Kevin should just start a web page for all the cars he needs to get rid of. lol
He could start his own Auto Trader magazine…. That 78-80 Olds on the big tires is kinda sweet
make da big bucks
Perfect opportunity to request a Squarespace sponsorship
He should call it "Cars and Digs" don't tell Doug though.
I have boat motor parts in my 2.5L 1st gen Sonoma. The crank rods cam and head are all off a 3.0L Mercruiser. Same blocks but longer stroke bigger cam lobes and larger valves. My 105hp 2.5L is now considered a 157hp 3.0L "Stroker" motor. Turbo coming soon. It was also a revival I did and now my daily. Thanks for the inspiration and tips Kevin.
