The peeled woodgrain made it look like a Utah High desert mural.
Next on Junkyard Digs, dropping the oil pan to see what was actually knocking... and then putting the pan back on without actually fixing anything.
The price of used AMC Eagles just increased from this one video.

I made a post about AMCs... Before any kids, my mom and dad had an AMC Rambler American, then, growing up, my family had a 1969 AMC Rambler Classic, and then we had a 70's (I believe a '74), AMC Ambassador Station Wagon. Tough cars up until a certain point where they were made cheaply. But.. yeah, I think Scott is right, The Eagle's stock just went up from watching this video on Junkyard Digs.

That was BRILLIANT!!! Just goes to prove that 1) an engine with a terminal knock is not a DEAD engine and 2) a day full of fun can still be had for 50 bucks (plus silly things like entry fees and fluids and such). Terrific video, man! Maximum kudos to everyone who made it possible.

It's probably a spunned connecting piston rod bearing. Judging from the type of noise. Someone absent minded person before either made a mistake changing the engine oil with the wrong filter. Leaking all the oil out. Or somehow blew out the oil filter gushing all the oil out. Causing zero lubrication. Causing the spun connecting rod bearing. The loud noise is due to the piston connecting rod bearing hitting the crankshaft journal when it's running. Course I am guessing with this AMC Eagle ?. 💪

I worked on some of these back in the late 80's-early 90's. Yes, they were a hodgepodge of whatever a dying car company could outsource, fairly reliable actually, but the one thing that stuck out to me was the driver's seat was super comfy to drive in and the A/C (if equipped) would run you out. Yep, they were not the best car of the era, but it was an AMC so that was OK.

Even after you shut it off? 😝 Actually the only major systems in the car not built by AMC were the tranny (Chrysler), Transfer Case (New Process Gear), Front Axle assembly (Dana) and brakes. Other wise the body, engine and rear end were all built in house in the same facility. The brakes used their own drums and discs. The master cylinders and wheel cylinders and drums. Those they bought.

Landed with amazing graze, even knowing the driver had forgotten to buckle his seat belt, so he was glued to the ceiling for about a second or two.
Only damage was that he had pulled the shock rods out of the pistons assembly, all 4 corners. $120 in repairs or so.

Me and a friend set out on a 300 mile journey from home to the blue ridge parkway and back. There were times I thought we were going to have to get out and push. This vehicle sits high. Ran over a dead deer at 55mph with no problem. Lots of fur underneath, but no damage. Built like a tank, but the motor is a no go. It was a neat fun vehicle while it lasted, which was not long. lol

The AMC six was actually a pretty good performer so I’m thinking you had a dud. My 1980 Eagle was great, nothing wrong with the six, but since I like the sound and power of a V8 I swapped in a 304 AMC which is probably something the factory should have done. What a nice upgrade. The 304 was bolt in to the automatic, as long as you used the 304 flexplate. Fit like a glove cuz the V8 came out of an AMC Spirit which has the same body as an Eagle.

Those tires are actually really good on ice. The lugs are altar flexi and the compound remains pliable in the cold. That said, the plug super quick in the mud, and wonder all over in the summer. Won’t feel it as much in an older unit, but they turn a newer unit into a waterbed on wheels around corners. Decent tire if you need lots of lug, and winter traction with decent hydroplane , and abrasion resistance

I bought an eagle wagon in '94 or so when I was a teen working at Shell with 3 bays. My co-worker fixed some tranny leak several times and was just done with it. His dad wouldn't allow any leaking cars at home. So I jokingly said I'll give you $100. He said its yours. It was in great condition. I did the same thing taking it out beating the hell out it with friends. There was a really steep incline and my buddy said more speed you can make it! So I did and the front cv axle popped out just like on this one. I though it was broken though. So we left it and I picked up another from pick and pull. Came out a week later and it was all shot up and looked like it went through war. We fixed it and kept off roading several more times until the subframe just came off the body or something. It was dead. But the was the most fun I've ever had with any vehicle.

Funny thing is.... even when AMC's do have a rod let go, it almost never ventilates the block. Might go out through the pan, though. AMC blocks are heavy duty nickle-iron. When my machinist did my 401 a few years ago, I commented on using a diamond bit when he bored it out as an AMC block will eat steel bits. He didn't believe me. He phoned me mad as hell one day when he was boring out the block and he claimed it was taking a one and one half bits to bore a single cylinder. I asked if he was using diamond bits, to which he replied "no". He then switched to a diamond-tip bit and it took only two bits to to re-bore the whole block.
AMC stuff was tough as nails. They were always 4th place in a three-place race. They had a thing or two to prove. Let's also not forget that even after Chrysler acquired AMC, Chrysler promptly discontinued their Slant 6 and produced the AMC six all the way 'til 2008. Not only that, but Chrysler took AMC's V8-head technology and applied it to their LA-based V8s and that's where we get the lovely "Magnum" engines of the 90's and early 2000's.
