    I have a 1972 F250 4x4 with the same wheels, the guy at the tire shop said that those wheels are called “Lock ring wheels” which are for use with tubes. He said that he would put a new tire and tube in if I wanted, but I just ended up getting an 80s set of standard wheels. So not technically a split rim, but you still can’t run a standard tubeless tire.

    Thanks for explaining the brake adjustment. That's where I have the most problems!

    • @MattsRageFitGarage
      @MattsRageFitGarage 2 роки тому +2

      There is a better way to adjust the brakes and get them right the first time. Turn the adjuster wheel in until you can't turn the tire anymore, this sort of sets everything in place where it needs to be, then back it off until you get a mild drag, tire should make about 1.5-2 revolutions before coming to a stop if you give it a good spin with two hands. If done properly the brake pedal should be right on top and after you drive it a time or two the brake shoes should be broken in enough that the auto adjusters take over the adjustment. After verifying the brakes work satisfactory adjust the parking brake cable if needed, it should be adjusted so it holds the vehicle from rolling in gear by the third or fourth click. My dad did thousands of brake jobs during his career as an auto mechanic and I've done it both ways, always had had to do it over when I didn't do it the way he taught me.

      I'm not saying this is the case with Kevin and Mook (I don't care about their books), but a LOT of people will grow only a few rows of corn on even the tiniest piece of property because of the tax advantages. Corn is heavily subsidized by the government. Ever wonder why you have to get Coca Cola from Mexico if you want sugar instead of corn syrup? That's why. You can thread the needle to fit the government's for-tax definition of a "farm" for a **big** financial benefit, even if your revenues from the corn itself are negligible. I had a customer who "farmed" endangered turtles in a teeny habitat she built in the backyard of her 5000sft suburban lot. The IRS would bow and scrape at her will.
      Kevin clearly has a very good financial head on his shoulders, from his commentaries in earlier videos. If he grows a small field for that purpose, it shows just how savvy he really is.

      Not unless it's needed... I'd drop the pan and examine what's in it then proceed from there. An inspection and cleaning will tell you a lot about a transmission! Still, if all is good I would:
      A. Install a drain plug on the pan (it's already off so take advantage of the situation!)
      B. Install a magnet into the end of the drain plug or epoxy one into the pan itself.
      C. Modify the valve body to improve the firmness of shifting. You don't need a shift kit - you can modify the factory parts.
      D. Install an aftermarket, external cooler. I know there's a factory set of lines that run to the bottom of the radiator but that's not good enough in hotter weather. A totally separate cooler is cheap insurance against developing problems and with most likely extend the life of the transmission. Heat is enemy #1 of automatics! For the investment of time and money, they're worth it. Best wishes!

    Kevin, you may be able to reach out to a tire/service shop that services a lot of older farm/AG equipment as they may have a tire cage they can place the wheels in for containment when seating those split rings. Friend of mine was able to do that with his tires for his Deuce.5

    • @MaxGiganteum
      @MaxGiganteum 2 роки тому

      Kevin already has what he needs... you inflate a split rim tire/rim combination under an immovable object. If the ring unseats, it has nowhere to go. What? Here's how it works. He has a lift and a truck. You put the truck on the lift and lower it down over a serviced split rim... centering the serviced tire/rim directly underneath one of the front tires still on the truck. Yes, the serviced tire/rim is flat on the concrete. The
      other tire/rim is fully inflated and bolted as per the norm on the truck. After you reasonably center the serviced tire/rim... drop the truck until the mounted tire puts a slight amount of downward pressure on the tire/rim that's laying flat on the concrete. Slowly inflate the serviced tire/rim while carefully watching the split rim ring. No movement? You're good. Movement? STOP! Slowly deflate and correct the problem before trying again. The only thing you've got to be sure to do to be safe is keep your body parts away from the tires in case the ring pops loose. It may not be able to escape from underneath the truck but that doesn't mean it cannot seriously mangle a hand, wrist or elbow in the short distance it can travel. Bottom line? The design type of rims known as split rims aren't a big deal when you understand how they work... and why they can be dangerous. Take the precautions to be safe and you have nothing to worry about. Best wishes!

    @WhiskeyRiverRifleman 2 роки тому +6

    You should grease that type of rear bearing when you put it back in. It takes a while for the gear oil to get back out there probably 50 mi. most good mechanics know this and they put a little grease in those bearings so they don't dry out and get hot.

    split rims are fine. just remove the valve from the stem to make sure there is no pressure when you pull the ring. also make sure the ring seats fully. these are are big in the aussie outback because you can easily swap tires in the bush. if you are still scared then bolt a chain threw the center of the tire for safety.

      @BigLifeWithLitlJay 2 роки тому

      I don't think they will anymore, but a few decades ago I worked at an NTW (they are now known as NTB) and had no fear of split rims. I was the only guy in the shop who was good with the old upright turret machine. The rest of the guys could only operate the rim clamps, so split rims fell on me. Step one was to always remove the valve core and make sure it was empty before I started working on the ring. From there out, they were easier than radials, if you asked me, especially when people cheaped out and bought skinny tires that didn't want to seat on a wide wheel.

    The brakes once adjusted and bedded will be super sensitive.

    30:30 Those are not split-rims; they are _lock ring_ wheels. You're thinking of the now infamous RH-5 wheels, whereas these are much safer...relatively speaking. They still deserve a LOT of respect and caution though. Tire shops generally won't touch them due to guilt by association, unfortunately.

The original 352 out of my dads 64 galaxie had so much grease and dirt build up on it you couldn't even see the contours of the intake manifold runners or the low spots between the runners. The whole underside of the car was that way as well. 2 hours of pressure washing and it was still nasty. Must not have ever been washed once under the hood in it's 258,000 miles of use LOL

      $50 says that in the past, someone sprayed used motor oil all over the undercarriage on purpose to do just that - act as a rust preventative. According to one of my long deceased grandfathers, the used motor oil method was even done on new cars and trucks back in the day at the dealerships. They'd use a metal pump sprayer to apply the oil after letting it heat up in the sun then run the car over a few miles of gravel and/or dirt roads. The dust and dirt would adhere to the oil creating a defacto protective layer. While not exactly environmentally friendly, apparently it was far better than nothing. The one downside was the mess... mechanics hated it. Imagine what it was like working on a seriously caked up car!

      @@MaxGiganteum The car was sold new in Los Angeles and spent most of its life there then moved to Western Washington sometime in the early 90's, we don't use road salt here either, not sure why there would be a need for rust prevention in SOCAL. The car is factory undercoated and it had a hell of a lot of miles on it and it leaked from every orifice transmission included before the original drivetrain was taken out. The back half of the car was a lot cleaner but still a lot of road dirt accumulated. The engine bay, suspension and transmission crossmember area was twice as bad as any old high mileage vehicle I've ever dealt with, mostly from neglect and oil leaks and the inside of the engine wasn't any better LOL

      Where at in W WA? I was in SW WA in the 90s. As far as the car goes, you'd be right about the SoCal weather but as has been said, old habits die hard. One of my grandmothers was still making her own soap in the early 80s... folks just often kept up with the habits whether they were good or bad, necessary or not. The car? Who knows who did what close to 60 years ago but I'd say that if that car wasn't coated front to back then you're most likely correct - poor or no maintenance was probably why it was coated with goo in the front half. I've run across the same thing a number of times in my career, an engine and/or a transmission covered due to slow but non-stop leakage. Little to no rust there. The back half? Quite a bit more... which wasn't surprising at all! Peace & good vibes!

    Hi from Western Australia

    Keep up the good work.
    Man, I'm 44 yrs old and I learned to do drum brakes when I was 14 yrs old.
    Now I sound old, but anyway, if I'd been taught to slide the adjuster forward/back while adjusting id prob actually like doing drum brakes.
    Trying to get 4 corners even and a good pedal used to make me throw tools all over the place.
    I learned yrs ago and I've hated drum brakes since.
    I've done 4wheel disc conversions on all my old cars just so I wouldn't have to do drum brakes.
    Then along comes Kevin and mook 30yrs later and makes it look like cake
    Thanks ......

    • @MaxGiganteum
      @MaxGiganteum 2 роки тому +1

      Don't feel bad... life is long. Just keep learning and growing. By the way... Kevin is actually still doing it the hard way. Huh? Yes. You grab your dial calipers and measure the ID of your freshly turned drum. Note the distance! After making sure the drum is in spec, you fully seat the shoes and measure across the outside of them from the tip of one face to the other. Use the star adjuster to move them out to the distance you noted for your drum minus an eighth inch. Install the drum and finish the last bit of adjustment. This method can save you a lot of time adjusting when the drum is installed - it's a lot easier and faster when the drum is off. No calipers? Use a measuring tape. It's not as accurate but it still works. Peace & good vibes!

    Just wanted to point out a correction on your concern with the wheels. What you have on this truck are actually split ring rims, and they are “somewhat” manageable to change the tire on in a safe manner as long as you know what you are doing. The rims you were referring to are called widow makers and they are the rims no tire shop wants to even touch. Just wanted to point that out because I agree with you on wanting to keep those rims on this truck. Gives it that original old farm truck look. Great video. Love these old fords.

    Kevin, back in the day it was not uncommon for us to pack the rear bearings with grease as a precaution against those who did not fill a rear end with oil properly. The standard for most of us was to fill it until it ran back out, but some shops insisted that if you could touch the oil with your little finger, it was full enough. Don't know why, that's just the way it was. (EDIT) By the way, the reason those cables were on the rear brake shoes is because they only self-adjust while backing up. They do not adjust while driving forwards.
