As a kid I always remember 4 players ( Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard and Koeman)on this Dutch team being consistently considered among the best in their position. They were the reigining Euro champions and a lot was expected of them at the start of this cup. They wound up grossly underachieving by barely making it out of the group stage and losing in the round of 16. Shows that in soccer to win tournaments you need more than individual talents. You need balance in every position, good coaching and overall strategy. All world cup winning coaches had to have been at least above average with some of them being brilliant. Shout out to Zagalo's coaching in Brazil's '70 Bearzot's '82 coaching of Italy and Carlos Bilardo, who I think is one of the alltime great soccer coaches, in Argentina's '86 and '90 campaigns.
There was also some internal strife, mostly due to the Dutch FA not choosing Cruyff as the head coach but Leo Beenhakker. That was really bad for the team building process.
That was a very tight group. If Egypt had managed to equalise against England in the next game it would have meant that all 4 teams had identical records and all 4 would have had to be pulled out of a pot to decide their placing in the group.
One of the best 0-0’s I’ve seen. And we were robbed. Pearce’s indirect free kick just brushed the top of Steve Bull’s huge bouffant of hair. VAR would pick that up now 😉. We were shite in the competition up until this game & I recall how it worried me & my mates us suddenly deploying a more continental sweeper system approach! But it seemed to work. Don't remember Lineker missing all those chances though. We were a bit over reliant on him some times.

This is/was your typical Italian stadium. Nearly all of them had a running track. Except Milan and Genoa. The stadiums in 1990 were magnificent and were far superior to anything in England at the time. Superior to pretty much anything in Europe at the time to be honest.

The worst world cup I've ever seen. Compare to the peak era of football from 2000 to 2014, the quality was terrible back then. 1997 was the beginning of football transformation to the next level. Unfortunately, since 2018 world cup is the beginning of football decline. Messi-Cristiano rivalry is the peak moment of football history.
