Strong memories of watching this game. Coming two years after Netherlands beat Germany in the Euro semi-final in Hamburg, we knew it would be a tense game. The bizarre Rijkaard / Völler incident sprang from Germany’s surprising tactical decision to play Völler wide on the left. He was giving the Dutch right-back endless problems when Rijkaard decided to take matters into his own hands and foul Völler. After the red cards, Klinsmann played the game of his life, doing enough running for two men.
Klinsmann was always runnig for two men. His game wasn´t very elegant but he was often able to shoot the important goals. And he was a fighter, no diver... and no spitter ;-)

Actually Brehme was pretty much ambidextrous with his feet. He would usually take free kicks with his left foot but took all of his penalties with his right.

Germany defence is incredible they're totally committed here. Technically very strong they are calm in front of goal. Netherlands had many chances but to no avail. What a great game.
Kohler was a piece of scum but he had Van Basten in his pocket here, the only thing MVB could do was some pathetic dive and he got a penalty for the effort too.
I was 18. I also didn't remember the Netherlands missing so many chances. In my mind Germany controlled the game, but clearly both teams created numerous chances against good defenders. What a match!

Hallo. Ah ok. Ich war zwölf Jahre alt zur damaligen Zeit. Es ist schwer zu erklären was diese 90er WM für mich so besonders gemacht hat. Die Menschen und die Welt in der wir als Kinder damals lebten war eine andere. Besser. Damals konnte man als Kind noch in den Ferien bis Abends halb elf mit Freunden draußen rum düsen. Mann brauchte sich als Eltern Teil keine Sorgen zu machen. In der Nachbarschaft paste der eine auf den anderen auf. Ich weiß noch als wäre es gestern, das ich und mein Vater nach dem 90er Endspiel Stundenlang an der Straße standen und den Autos die an uns Hupend vorbei fuhren zugewuncken haben. Ach es war einfach eine Wunderschöne Zeit damals. WUNDERBARE JAHRE

The Germans were not to be denied in this tournament.. they had reached the championship game in both the 82 and 86 World Cups only to lose them both. 1990 was the year of payback and the Germans beat the Dutch and Argentine teams who had beaten them in 88 Euros and 86 World Cup .. this very rarely happens but this is how good Germany was.

@Daniel Thor Copperfield He may have been relatively old and not as exceptionally fast as he once was, but he had just had a blinder of a season at Sampdoria. His form was not a problem. Dutch national teams seem to almost always be fighting among each other, with their coach, or both! Certainly one would have expected him to put away one of the chances in this game, though. The Dutch team as a whole wasn't on great shooting form in this match.

Aber eins ist mir jetzt aufgefallen: Wenn man sich das heute fast 35 Jahre später anschaut, dann hat der Fußball seither nochmal deutlich zugelegt, was Athletik, Geschwindigkeit und Technik auf diesem internationalen Niveau angeht.... Hätte ich nicht gedacht, war mir bisher zumindest nicht so bewusst.

You might think I'm baiting with my last comment, but I remember the tournament well. It wasn't until 2010 that Germany produced a team that aspired to exciting, not stultifying football. A new generation had arrived & the fully deserved their victory four years later.
Since I can still remember the argument between Völler and Rijcard very clearly, the editing of the video surprises me a lot. Rijcard was a carrion, the Dutch were unfair. They didn't make a good picture. no character Back then they probably wanted to win a war and they thought they had to be assholes. missed.
A historic match revealing the fighting spirit after the red card for Rudi Nationale. Klinsi was running like the Greek from marathon to athen, legendary match. Magic year world champion and reunification. I want the good times back..... 33 years later what has become better in my country.... Not much.
Funny how Illgner, the German goalie, hardly had anything to do that night, despite several big chances by the Dutch. Either the Dutch players missed the target (like Wouters), or the rock-solid German defense cleared the ball. Germany usually enter each tournament with one or often two keepers of absolute world class. Every successful German tournament is also remembered for at least one spectacular match of their keepers - Turek in 1954, Maier in 1974, Kahn in 2002, Schumacher in 1986, Lehmann in 2006, Neuer in 2014 etc. But for 1990, this is not the case. Illgner was a good goalkeeper, but not an outstanding one. Some mean critics said that if he hadn't saved a poorly executed penalty by Stuart Pierce, it wouldn't have mattered whom Germany would have put between the posts.
War damals auch im Stadion, auf gut Glück spontan mit Freunden über Nacht nach Mailand gefahren und Karten auf dem Schwarzmarkt gekauft. 180DM, es war jeden Pfennig wert. Die Stimmung im Stadion war grandios, ein Meer von weiss. Die Karte hab ich als Andenken heute noch.

I watched this game in a diner fully packed with people and standing room only. Everyone and I mean really everyone was cheering for the Netherlands and I was the only one for Germany. Even at my own table, friends were cheering for the Netherlands. And then Germany was so superior and won with the super goal from Brehme.

A great game that was almost ruined by Rijkaard's spitting incident. Rudi Völler received a red card as well which he did not deserve, and hence could not participate in the game against Czechoslovakia.

Netherlands played a lot of pretty passes but were a shambles in the box. German keeper actually didn’t have much to do except pick out the penalty from the net. Germany made better use of the ball and Klinsmann was the difference maker in front of goal. The disgusting antics of Rijkaard too cannot be ignored. Germany worthy winners.
To this day, it remains a mystery why, when Rijkaard spat at Völler, BOTH players were sent off. However, this spectacular injustice towards Germany turned out a huge advantage eventually. With both teams reduced to 10 players, there was more space for Klinsmann in the Dutch defense, and he went on to make the match of his life that day.
Voller was already sent off for getting a deserved second yellow card when Rijkaard spat on him. The mystery is why Rijkaard spit on him. Rijkaard wasn't even the player that Voller fouled.
@@asnark7115 I don't see why Völler should have deserved a second yellow card? Right before that scene, he had a clash with the Dutch goalkeeper when both went for the ball, but it was a normal fight that happens hundreds of times during a match. It certainly didn't qualify as a foul as Völler turned to the left not to smash into van Breuckelen. You don't send a player off a world cup pitch for a banality like this. Plus, it is obvious that Völler received the red card not for the aledged foul but for his heavy reaction to what Rijkaard did to him.
@@johnjim6793 - As far as I know both players had been arguing/bitching around for some time up to this point and finally the referee had enough of it. But it has become German lore that Völler was completely innocent. ;-)

The yellow card had been okay, but I can't detect anything in that scene that would have deserved a red card (or second yellow). Of course, Rijkaard's behaviour was so disgusting and scandalous, a dark-red card if there ever was one, so what Völler did might have appeared to many harmless in comparison.
I am 51, but i still remember the game, especially Brehme's goal. Germany had one of the best team, ever. Raijkaard was wrong, but lots of tension, both teams wanted to win. Holland had some chances, however Germany was playing them very tightly and were not scared. You cannot beat Beckenbauer as a coach.
Wenn ich daran zurückdenke bekomme ich heute noch Gänsehaut. Lama Rijkaard spuckt und Rudi erhält zu Unrecht die rote Karte. Danach zeigt Klinsi eine seiner besten Leistungen überhaupt. Nach diesem Sieg war klar das noch großes für das deutsche Team möglich sein wird. Und so kam es dann mit dem Weltmeistertitel.

Das war das vorweggenommene Finale 1990. Das WM Halbfinalspiel 1982 Deutschland gegen Frankreich war auch ein Klassespiel.

I was VERY upset when that s7up1d spanish team won the 2010 wc on you guys. All their matches were with only 1 goal of difference except one with 2 against a weak opponent, it seems they had a draw too..

What a game!!! I was 12 back in 1990. Didn't remember Holland playing so well and missing a lot of chances. Germany was more lethal. Fantastic match.

I was 18. I also didn't remember the Netherlands missing so many chances. In my mind Germany controlled the game, but clearly both teams created numerous chances against good defenders. What a match!

Aber dieser grossartige Techniker hatte ein unfassbares Level ,und eine Konstante, die phantastisch war! Er brachte fast immer 100% Leistung, und war auch ein extrem wichtiger Baustein in seinen Länderspieleinsätzen! Dazu bodenständig, und volksnah! Ich bewundere ihn sehr ....⚽️⚽️⚽️

Ah ok. Ich war zwölf Jahre alt zur damaligen Zeit. Es ist schwer zu erklären was diese 90er WM für mich so besonders gemacht hat. Die Menschen und die Welt in der wir als Kinder damals lebten war eine andere. Besser. Damals konnte man als Kind noch in den Ferien bis Abends halb elf mit Freunden draußen rum düsen. Mann brauchte sich als Eltern Teil keine Sorgen zu machen. In der Nachbarschaft paste der eine auf den anderen auf. Ich weiß noch als wäre es gestern, das ich und mein Vater nach dem 90er Endspiel Stundenlang an der Straße standen und den Autos die an uns Hupend vorbei fuhren zugewuncken haben.
Ach es war einfach eine Wunderschöne Zeit damals.

Ich bin auch ein Scheidungskind 😏 Als ich acht Jahre alt war trennten sich meine Eltern. Meine Mutter dachte sie müßte noch mal von vorne anfangen. Wer versteht das schon. Von daher kann ich sehr gut nachvollziehen wie es dir damals gegangen ist.
Jetzt liegt meine Mutter zwei Meter unter der Erde und mein Vater ist noch da.

@Daniel Thor Copperfield He may have been relatively old and not as exceptionally fast as he once was, but he had just had a blinder of a season at Sampdoria. His form was not a problem. Dutch national teams seem to almost always be fighting among each other, with their coach, or both! Certainly one would have expected him to put away one of the chances in this game, though. The Dutch team as a whole wasn't on great shooting form in this match.

Ich war damals 12, und bei der Rijkaard Spuck-Aktion gegen mein Idol Rudi Völler hab ich fast nen Herzinfarkt bekommen... Aber eins ist mir jetzt aufgefallen: Wenn man sich das heute fast 35 Jahre später anschaut, dann hat der Fußball seither nochmal deutlich zugelegt, was Athletik, Geschwindigkeit und Technik auf diesem internationalen Niveau angeht.... Hätte ich nicht gedacht, war mir bisher zumindest nicht so bewusst.

I know. Maradona was unlucky against german teams and players. As a trainer, he met Thomas Müller. After the match against Germany in 2010 his carrer as a trainer was finished.
One thing about German squad I admired.. they are already a Grade 1 team in the world, their discipline in taking care their appearance is a thumb up... Hardly seeing German players' in weird attire like pulling up the sock above the knee.. Well done German...Well discipline, good etiquette

You might think I'm baiting with my last comment, but I remember the tournament well. It wasn't until 2010 that Germany produced a team that aspired to exciting, not stultifying football. A new generation had arrived & the fully deserved their victory four years later.

Since I can still remember the argument between Völler and Rijcard very clearly, the editing of the video surprises me a lot. Rijcard was a carrion, the Dutch were unfair. They didn't make a good picture. no character Back then they probably wanted to win a war and they thought they had to be assholes. missed.

Magic year world champion and reunification. I want the good times back..... 33 years later what has become better in my country.... Not much.

Funny how Illgner, the German goalie, hardly had anything to do that night, despite several big chances by the Dutch. Either the Dutch players missed the target (like Wouters), or the rock-solid German defense cleared the ball. Germany usually enter each tournament with one or often two keepers of absolute world class. Every successful German tournament is also remembered for at least one spectacular match of their keepers - Turek in 1954, Maier in 1974, Kahn in 2002, Schumacher in 1986, Lehmann in 2006, Neuer in 2014 etc. But for 1990, this is not the case. Illgner was a good goalkeeper, but not an outstanding one. Some mean critics said that if he hadn't saved a poorly executed penalty by Stuart Pierce, it wouldn't have mattered whom Germany would have put between the posts.
War damals auch im Stadion, auf gut Glück spontan mit Freunden über Nacht nach Mailand gefahren und Karten auf dem Schwarzmarkt gekauft. 180DM, es war jeden Pfennig wert. Die Stimmung im Stadion war grandios, ein Meer von weiss. Die Karte hab ich als Andenken heute noch.

I watched this game in a diner fully packed with people and standing room only. Everyone and I mean really everyone was cheering for the Netherlands and I was the only one for Germany. Even at my own table, friends were cheering for the Netherlands. And then Germany was so superior and won with the super goal from Brehme.

A great game that was almost ruined by Rijkaard's spitting incident. Rudi Völler received a red card as well which he did not deserve, and hence could not participate in the game against Czechoslovakia.
Voller had insulted Rijkaard so many times before, guy. It's a critical racism.
Since Germany would have beat the Czech any day, it must have been good for Völler and Germany to have one match rest before more critical matches.

Netherlands played a lot of pretty passes but were a shambles in the box. German keeper actually didn’t have much to do except pick out the penalty from the net. Germany made better use of the ball and Klinsmann was the difference maker in front of goal. The disgusting antics of Rijkaard too cannot be ignored. Germany worthy winners.

To this day, it remains a mystery why, when Rijkaard spat at Völler, BOTH players were sent off. However, this spectacular injustice towards Germany turned out a huge advantage eventually. With both teams reduced to 10 players, there was more space for Klinsmann in the Dutch defense, and he went on to make the match of his life that day.
Voller was already sent off for getting a deserved second yellow card when Rijkaard spat on him. The mystery is why Rijkaard spit on him. Rijkaard wasn't even the player that Voller fouled.
@@asnark7115 I don't see why Völler should have deserved a second yellow card? Right before that scene, he had a clash with the Dutch goalkeeper when both went for the ball, but it was a normal fight that happens hundreds of times during a match. It certainly didn't qualify as a foul as Völler turned to the left not to smash into van Breuckelen. You don't send a player off a world cup pitch for a banality like this. Plus, it is obvious that Völler received the red card not for the aledged foul but for his heavy reaction to what Rijkaard did to him.

The yellow card had been okay, but I can't detect anything in that scene that would have deserved a red card (or second yellow). Of course, Rijkaard's behaviour was so disgusting and scandalous, a dark-red card if there ever was one, so what Völler did might have appeared to many harmless in comparison.

I am 51, but i still remember the game, especially Brehme's goal. Germany had one of the best team, ever. Raijkaard was wrong, but lots of tension, both teams wanted to win. Holland had some chances, however Germany was playing them very tightly and were not scared. You cannot beat Beckenbauer as a coach.
Wenn ich daran zurückdenke bekomme ich heute noch Gänsehaut. Lama Rijkaard spuckt und Rudi erhält zu Unrecht die rote Karte. Danach zeigt Klinsi eine seiner besten Leistungen überhaupt. Nach diesem Sieg war klar das noch großes für das deutsche Team möglich sein wird. Und so kam es dann mit dem Weltmeistertitel.
