These are the best videos for the hobby, as there is nothing better than a dealer’s perspective. Especially an experienced dealer who has seen the peaks and valleys of the hobby so he doesn’t get caught up in the FOMO part.. I think the big thing about the hobby is the diversity in terms of the type of collectors today. If you go back to the 80’s/90’s, we were all literally chasing the same raw cards and sets. Now you have different eras to collect, different grades, high grade, mid grade, low grade, autos, parallels, base, vintage, 80’s/90’s, set builders, etc. I think everyone has their own niche and that’s a good thing for the hobby. That’s why I don’t follow the trends because they are constantly changing..
Hey, thanks for the kind words!! I agree, I mainly follow vintage channels, but there is such diversity, even with those. As you said- high grade, low grade, Set collector, HOF collector, player collector, pre war, post war. Really makes it fun and interesting! Thanks for watching and giving your thoughts!

But to your point with the number 3 choice, I haven’t been to any of those shows, so I’d have to ask him about the ones you mentioned. I will tell you, the Pittsburgh (monroeville) show coming up, has some great vintage for being a smaller city show.
@@DansVintageBaseballPC You will find most of the dealers with a good vintage selection who do Hofstra and White Plains at the Philly show. Shriners pulls dealers from a different geographic area, so there are guys set up there that I don't see at any other shows I do.

Well-done interview, Theo, and I must say a worthwhile dealer to converse with. Howard is definitely a most interesting, engaged dealer. I really admire his wisdom regarding collecting the big names. To wit: the mainstream cards have been, and will continue to be available in virtually any grade. True, the cream rises to the top, and the best of the easiest will always get big bucks. However, your typical collector really relishes owning something that 75 - 99% of his fellow collectors do not have. Particularly when the card is of one of the most in-demand players, AND if the card looks beautiful and flat-out mesmerizing. If the card is rare, but ugly, who cares? Add a great background story, and you have the makings of something quite intriguing. Methinks what Howard Chasser was referring to at 40:50 will more than fill that profoundly mesmerizing profile. Thank you, Howard, for providing hobbyists with something definitely more desirable than plain, every-show ordinary mainstream cards. You offer something somebody once had to wade and fight 2 miles upstream in the rapids to reach, then finally by brooks too broad for leaping. The cards that become centerpieces in someone's collection. The cards that come to mind when someone asks, "what's the favorite card in your collection?"
Brian, I love this comment! The first time I met Howard, I knew instantly, he loved baseball cards and was willing to share his knowledge to others! I do agree, when you go to his table, it’s not like anyone else’s and the guys out there that live for the non mainstream sets, it’s like Disneyland. I got a Mannys baseball land Clemente from him at the National last year, and it’s definitely cool to have something, none of the other Clemente collectors in my circle have. I believe Mr. Mint Alan Rosen bought them out in the late 80s / early 90s when Manny decided to exit the business. Mannys offered great photos that nobody else offered, so am glad for you to land one! Quick story, bro. I grew up in the Chicago suburbs in the late 60s, rooting for the Cubs. So, I'm watching the Bucs battle the Cubs in Wrigley Field. The grass was very soggy wet. Anyway, a Cub batter sent a scorching liner to right field. Roberto Clemente sprinted hard to get within reach. He catches it, but doing so put him off-balance. Roberto then goes into this looooooonnnnngggggg slide in the soggy grass, and does it so smoothly and with elegance, most of the Cub fans in the park gave him an ovation, and me glued to the TV screen, watched with admiration. We wanted our Cub to get a hit, but we sure as anything had to admire the way the great Roberto Clemente robbed us of that certain hit. I could tell the legendary Cubs broadcaster, Jack Brickhouse, was mighty impressed as well. Just something that has stayed in my baseball memory for over 50 years. Be well, Theo. I have bought SO many cards lately in which the lower grade card is FAR superior to the higher priced/higher graded card. I wish a TPG would emerge that simply legitimizes the authenticity of the card, and whether it is altered or original. That's all.... let the owner decide the number grade for themselves! Mindless sheeple abound in this hobby.

Vintage football was produced much less. I rarely saw it for sale in the 80’s or 90’s even. Compared to vintage Baseball, what’s your opinion of the production ratio? 70-30? 80-20? It’s always seemed more fun to collect vintage sports OTHER than baseball.
Hopefully Howard might be able to answer this, I’ve never seen someone discuss that topic. I would imagine you’re right, baseball cards were way more popular at that time, so I’m sure they were produced a lot more. Thanks for watching!
@mackeymintle66 No question that Football, Basketball, Hockey and other sports cards were made in far smaller quantities than baseball. A ratio would be impossible to quantify as there are no production records available. An educated guess would be no more than about 10-20%. Definitely harder to collect - less around to start, not as many dealers stock them. When you start looking for anything 1930's and back they are REALLY hard to find! FOr now the only thing keeping prices significantly lower than baseball is significantly smaller market demand.

Hello there. Thanks for the content, you are providing me a great education since I am a new but old (51yo) collector. I don't plan on collecting vintage since I am not old enough to have seen those players play. But I also find vintage to be boring, for lack of a better word. And please forgive me, not knocking anyone nor am I an expert. I think vintage needs a serious marketing overhaul. Bring some excitement to the era. Other than the dream of getting a mantle card, it's kind of blah.
Well for not being interested in it, it’s nice you’re open minded enough to watch this and hear us discuss. Me personally, i love learning about the history of the game through the players and the history of topps through the cards. I think your point on marketing it better, the issue is- Topps has no incentive to market vintage, there goal is to sell the new stuff. They do make Topps heritage which promotes the old sets, so I guess that helps. I think the only way it really gets marketed is by us collectors on social media. I will say- the group of fellow collectors that I call friends now, do make the vintage hobby way more fun! Thanks for watching and checking in! 👊🏻

Start searching some of the archived threads about any of the prewar baseball sets on " Net54 baseball" and find a used copy of the "Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards" and start perusing. The breadth of issues or there is amazing - loss of little tributaries to travel down. Many different ways to collect.
