Some jazz player did a similar thing in a busy subway. He played all morning for free and only a small handful of people stopped to listen. He had a sold out concert that night with very expensive tickets.
brilliant move from banksy - both commercial and artistic; reminds me of when he stuck a piece of his in a museum in london next to a classic painting. great artists constantly challenge the definition of art and the way we see it
Exactly, I was also shocked that not many people RECOGNIZED his work. I mean, I would have gone insane realizing I can but his work. But people spend millions on a canvas with a dot. And I am so glad he continues to create in the cities !! And not in galleries
To all the people saying "I don't get it". - Banksy is a guerilla artist who has kept his identity a secret for years. His artwork is iconic in London. He makes statements with all of his work, old man selling black and white canvases for $60, eating his sandwiches on the street in New York and then giving the customers hugs... This video is another piece of artwork.
I would have asked the old man, if he could make a small version of the picture with the little bear looking up the tree for the next day, as I had only 20$ to spend. What a wonderful and crazy idea - thanks Banksy merry Christmas to all of us.
Interesting concept. Not sure about the art truly being worth thousands, or more, like people are saying though!! A stencil, once created is reproduced quickly and easily, who says he even sprayed them - or ANY of his works for that matter? The main thing adding to the value is the fact that by buying the canvases, the customer actually became part of Banksy's artwork (the stall itself) for that moment. They not only scored the art but unknowingly joined in on his performance piece!
Banksy set up the whole thing (this was featured on his blog)... how is it leeching money? You clearly do not understand. It was all a setup, a statement on the stupidity of the art consumers world in general...
Dear bansky I live in the us I been drawing you master pieces by hand for a little bit. And I love spray painting. I just want to say thank you for the inspiration you have gave me.
I believe this to be real art of Bansky's I am constantly on his website being inspired! I love what he stands for, I love his anonymity, I think anyone who can't enjoy his beautiful, meaningful, expression is just missing out in their lives. All of his work has meaning, and is beautiful! I would have purchased all of them on the spot, and if my fiance disagreed I would have traded him in for a couple! I may just have to go to NYC in the next week or so just to see if he is still set up!!!
I would love to own one of his piece I've been a fan of his since 13. I'm 24 now. An I've get to see a genuine Banksy piece in person. Every time I go to the locations its been painted over or cant find it. The times he is in nyc its over. :( well keep it up Banksy I'm your biggest fan.
Spray paint on canvas = $5. Watching the elderly, uninterested street vendor sell a few = perhaps a bit more. Being one of the purchases watching this vid on the news when you got home or on UA-cam, now knowing you have tens of thousands of $ of art on your wall? Priceless! Thanks Banksy - Quite sublime
What this really says is that Banksy's work is not worth much more than $60. What people are really paying for is his name. That's how art works, art by itself is never worth more than a few hundred dollars more than the raw materials and time put into it. What makes art expensive is the name behind it. It's why shit can be sold for thousands of dollars.
You idiots don't realism the time and effort that goes into making art. Not only that banksy and other street artists risk being caught which would mean years behind bars.
Yes maybe but that still doesn't explain why Gursky's Rhein II was sold for 4.3 Million dollars.. and that's a photograph. Doesn't ask much time to make it does it? Art gets expensive because of supply & demand, unicity and eventually also because of the name behind it as qwertyuiopaaaaaaa7 already mentioned.
This is a testament to the low level of public‘s knowledge and appreciation of the arts. It also is a result of the constant and sense numbing pursuit for customer’s attention by the marketing establishment.
Ever heard of the possibility of to talk to another person? In this example you could always ask the person selling these pieces, where they are from and let this person give you a proof etc.etc. or you could of course act within the possibility of your prejudices without opening yourself. So of course this experiment gives you the chance to think about a view things, perhaps about other ones than you first suggested.
ins't part of the point? Are you buying it for its 'market value' or 'personal aesthetic value? Its pretty safe to assume everyone in the video is buying it simply because they like it. Not because they know who 'he' is.
It's sad how people will be so impressed with seeing his work on a wall but or even in a frame in a gallery and our willing to spend gobs of money to buy his work but when. It's for sell on canvas for $60, and people walk past it. Like we'd people. Are you so high strung on buying the highest bidder art work that you can't stop for 2 mins to appreciate or help out artist who could really use the confidence self esteem boost.
+chase speer Not quite, do you think that every person on those streets are capable of purchasing art pieces for four or five figures? Most people cannot, if anything it is a nice give away for those people unable to otherwise afford his work.
+Jon Goshe You're statement is the purpose for this experiment. The point was to see how the perspective of the artwork changes when one small aspect changes, such as his name. Those people who bought the work can sell it for a ton of money if they wanted to and I bet that the people who didn't are probably wishing that they would've bought it.
Honestly, there's a lot of fake and unauthorized banksy prints (I have a few on my wall at home) but shit for 60 bucks for any size canvas?! Can't beat that even if it's fake lol
Banksy you my friend are amazing....thankyou for proving to the world that regardless of name and price tag that no matter what type of art it is people will buy it if they like it..regrdless of who has made it..not too mention when these people cotton on to the fact that you have just changed their lives...well done.... Let life be lived as if you are creating a piece of art.

Sr. Bansky, you are a genius...thank you for your art.
I get the point to of this however I also understand why people wouldn't pay the $60, maybe for something unique but it just looks like someone's trying to charge $60 for a banksy knock off, it they weren't stuff he'd done before and really some of his famous ones than i think it would make a much more powerful point
I agree sir but the point of this is to highlight a reason which you give in your argument: unless people see a brand on the product they don't see worth.
To be completely honest I would have to know more about something to place any value on it. I mean you can't expect everyone to have an extensive knowledge of a single subject. Plus, he's selling them on the street. When people do that it usually means the art is hand crafted and holds no value since it can be easily recreated. I mean you never needed to do an experiment to remind people of the fact that looks aren't everything when it comes to art.
I would have recognized Bansky's work immediately! I wouldnt have cared too much that I thought it was fake. I would have potentially found a clue like "this is not a photo shoot", and pondered that. Banksy is a genius, and this prank is totally something he would and could pull off! I would have been on to him had I passed by this stand...
Would you have paid $60 for what you thought was a reprinted Banksy canvas that you could make yourself for $20? I probably would have walked right by and i'm familiar with his work.
Exit through the gift shop was classic..I think it was due to anonymity!!! A lot of the messages are very powerful in his art, but are mostly presented in a very simple but often very creative and cleaver way, I guess thats one of the reasons. Also some of his messages he portrays in his art has got a touch of humour (or irony), in it even if its a serious issue. He seems to pick up on current social issues very fast and create something that makes people think. Google images of Banksy in google, honestly hes amazing.
I walked by this as me and my friend were discussing how Bansky was in New York right now. We thought they were reproductions. If I knew they were original Banksy pieces I would have bought them all that moment.
Just returned from our awesome honeymoon in New York!! We were in central park a day earlier. My wife and I wonder if we would have paid for a canvas if we saw this stand. I would like to think we would, hell, we paid for some in Venice Beach. : )
Exactly and people still bought all his canvases the next time he sold them, even though he told them that these ones were fake. People still bought them though.
Thing is, many shops sell these paintings or copies all around the UK, possibly the world- The original art on the walls is valuable, not these copies- you wouldn't buy a copy of the mona lisa or Rembrandt's night watch for the price of the original! Furthermore, the original has the value of being satirical and sending a message- it isn't the same when it is hanging in someone's corridor, instead of on the street for the public to see.
Only the people who truly valued the images and not the artist's name and hype bought the works. Great stuff.
Is that why he had it shreded in actions?
"Signed original stencil artwork"
People just do not look or read!
The crazy part is the guy who bought 4 'because he needed to decorate his house' now holds about $124,000+ in Banksy Artwork. So crazy...
+Lemon Lorraine Eh. It's only worth $124,000+ when you don't have it. However when you do, it's worth -$124,000.
Thats not how actives work at all
Four paintings at $60 a pop, it's worth $240 😄
My favorite part of the video is of the elderly man yawning and spreading his sunshine by giving all the hugs and kisses to the ones that purchased
Tis a very interesting concept. Just goes to show that an artist's name is worth more than his works.
And yet the artworks were signed.

What if it's his grandfather
Man, if someone noticed and bought every one of these they'd be a millionaire now.

This is very cool of banksy to do, some people are very lucky $60 purchase just become around $50k!
Be hilarious if the older guy is Banksy's father, just across the pond for a day.
Interesting concept. Not sure about the art truly being worth thousands, or more, like people are saying though!! No, it's just trying to leech off money from Banks' work, nothing else.
Pathetic
Banksy set up the whole thing (this was featured on his blog)... how is it leeching money? You clearly do not understand. It was all a setup, a statement on the stupidity of the art consumers world in general...
lol dude. :D lol

This is a testament to the low level of public‘s knowledge and appreciation of the arts. It also is a result of the constant and sense numbing pursuit for customer’s attention by the marketing establishment.
To be realistic, as a fan of your art, if I saw these, I'd assume they were illegal prints and ignore them. Don't infer too much from your experiment.

A lot of the messages are very powerful in his art, but are mostly presented in a very simple but often very creative and cleaver way, I guess thats one of the reasons. wish i passed by that stand

Next time banksy makes a sale like this, he should announce it somewhere, I would buy it out in a second.
