1:27 mate, your interpretation of what Banksey did to Robbos peice is way off! The man was painting over Robbo's peice not putting it up. It was a diss. As it was Robbo's last remaining peice still up.
Nah the original pretty clearly was a guy wheatpasting the graffiti on as if it was wallpaper onto a blank wall. Not him painting over it, unless you're talking in the literal sense obviously.
I respect both Robbo & Banksy, but Robbo is a pure graffiti artist whereas Banksy is both a traditional graff artist and a street artist, if you get me. Banksy's murals often have an underlying message and they bridge a gap between the old skool tagging & graff (which Banksy, particularly in his early works, is also known for and he is incredible at by the way) & modern, "urban" art. So, I got much love for Robbo as a graffer, but thought he let himself down a bit here if I'm honest. Team Robbo resorted to just painting over works and petty threats, whereas Banksy, rightly or wrongly, was witty & clever in his manipulation of Robbo's piece. To me, it came across as a publicity stunt, even if it wasn't meant that way. I'd have MUCH preferred Robbo to stick to what he's good at and, rather than just deface Banksy's work, paint something incredible and eye-catching right next to it. The "Blek" insult is just naff in the extreme - Banksy has made no secret of the influence Blek has had on his work and the 2 have collaborated and supported each other, so I don't get what Team Robbo were trying to say. It smacked of jealousy, really. All that being said, Robbo was a pioneer for graffiti in the UK and I will remember him for that and his brilliant artwork, rather than for this silly 'feud' which, in my opinion, did him no favours

It makes me sad to see so many kids these days, calling themselves "graffiti artists" when all they do is scribble their names or the name of some girl. Graffiti can be art, even when it is just a name. A stylish tag, well drawn is not just some bit of scribble that should be painted over, let alone a picture. If anything, that artistic ability should be encouraged and supported. Think of all the plain, ugly walls that could be brought alive with colour, just by naming a theme and letting Artists transform it (I intentionally missed the word graffiti there. An artist is an artist and why not let other local people, who enjoy making art, join in?) . If people stopped treating them like criminals and just asked that they keep in mind, their work will be seen by everybody (so something offensive or obscene would have to be painted over) I think every artist would hit those walls with a passion, trying to make their work the stand out piece of the mural. At the end, there would be a work of art, irreplaceable, priceless and those people formally called criminals would have worked together to make their town a better place. Isn't that what we all need? To learn how to work together and make a better place for us all?
Well I've never heard of "Taki 187" but Taki 183 and Julio 204 were at the very forefront of the art style, when it was at it's most simplistic. Even so, both tags have precise form and a set balance between the letter and number placement that sets them apart from a plain "scribble". They were prethought and designed to look a certain way, not just scrawled randomly. As with any art form, time has developed graffiti beyond it's simple beginnings to an art form that can be breathtaking, shocking, beautiful, bizzarre, just as any other form of art can be. Futura being a perfect example of this (he no longer uses the 2000) as he is a true artist, of worldwide renown, and has expanded his "canvas" to vehicles, fashion, illustration, advertising and, yes, even to real canvas. Even a basic name Tag in one colour is complex and beautifully rendered. A piece of his art would definitely bring vibrancy and interest to an otherwise dull and dreary area. Personally, there are some of his pieces I would LOVE to get my hands on. I could never afford to but that's the point. You never know what talent lies hidden in your own neighbourhood but if graffiti artists worked together to make works of art in otherwise bleak places, the whole community could share that piece of work. It would be there for everyone to enjoy.
@@lyndaleoliver-musto23 Graffiti just went over your head son. Maybe you want to make beautiful things but it's totally not about that. What you call scribble is probably better than what you would ever do.
I like Banksy though, he conveys messages to people. That Disneyland stunt was clever and when he painted on the wall between israel and palestine, just genious! Robbo's work is pretty good too though
Id agree but i bet banksy can still paint letters given the chance... tbh hes good at what he does its his credibility and followers that frown upon graffiti unless its by banksy that pisses me off .. im a writer myself i love graff but i let mental health take over so havnt been active in years just the odd sketch here and there call him a sell out but given half the chance any artist would sellout for the money banksy makes
"Did you paint over Robbo’s piece and have him beaten up? His piece in Camden had been dogged for more than five years by the time I painted that spot. It’s a real shame about his accident and I hope he fully recovers. I would never deliberately cuss Robbo - he’s a graffiti legend. And he’s bigger than me."
I haven't gained nearly enough fame banksy has but when it comes to graff I could careless who sees my shit. Look me up and try to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. BELK1 Lords running out of cali. Banksy gets mad props for displaying shit worth seeing.
Good video, you missed a few key pieces of info, not your fault though. Also, the story about Banksy and Robbo meeting when Banksy had just started is completely true. Banksy disrespected him, and thus caught a lot of shit from everyone in the scene, and rightly so. But once again, cool vid, I enjoyed it, you made some good points.
first off, street art can be a lot of things. painting on a wall is called graffiti. second, banksy started his "street-art" career by doing traditional stylized letter graffiti.
Easy. They are making the pieces more interesting by having this feud. After all, Robbo doesn't damage Banksy's stencils completely, he adds his own mark around. Except for painting over the "Global" War"ming" one but that one is lame. It is just text that would look like if anyone had written that, not necessarily Banksy. There was no big loss at all on that one. On the contrary, the "war" anecdote has made it more meaningful.
As someone who does spray graffiti and when i say graffiti i do more productions rather than tagging, but do do both, not street art is what the call banksy, all i can realy say is that there are plenty of blank walls in the uk, and along that canal, to directly go other another writers work like that, is complete disrespect, and to a founder at the time is just wrong, bansky made a big error there, and alot of people will jump on the bandwagon and do everything to destroy his work,
there is another piece you missed that Banksy did that is in Camden. It is on the brick wall under the canals next to Pirate's Castle. I just saw it today actually. It is a face with sunglasses.
If you don't want you piece to be painted over make it inaccesible. In Bristol graffitis are graffitied over and over again. That's just things evolving. Recently the "Bling bling me babber" camel off Alfred Rd. in St Pauls has been reworked. I don't like it that much anymore but ey the old one will remain in my memories. You don't need for something to remain for decades to become a piece of history. That Robbo's piece is part of the history now though it's not here anymore.
THESE GRAFFITI ARTISTS SHOULD GET MORE CEVER WITH THEIR ART. IF THEY WANNA CAUSE A REAL STIR, DO BETTER, CLEVER-ER SHIT THAN BANKSY. Then it'll get real interesting.
@DD9338 I agree with that to some extend but it is also about history. Think about the robbo piece as if it was the house of your childhood. Now this house wasn't necessarily a beautiful home but think about the memories that go with the house. Your first room, all the christmases and birthdays and all inbetween. If this house now got torn down and replaced with something really "beautiful" would you rather keep the house or would you chose something beautiful but with no soul?
obviously it was gona piss robbo off..if he had a piece of work in for 25 years untouched until bansky came along... i use to think bansky did his work free hand...he uses stencil....cheat.....robbo did the portrait of lenny kravits daughter free hand..true artist and talent.
Most graff Artists know of banksy and respect him for what he has accomplished. You act all noble with golden ribbons set high like graff artists don't circulate hand styles bombings or any styles for that matter. One way or another it's been used before. That's like saying hey don't copy characters from popular animation movies.
Funny how some people think Banksy is the nuts because he's made money....what part of being a secret, underground, criminal damage, breaking and entering, risking it all for fame and respect, in the freezing cold, next to a live rail artist do these people not understand??? TEAM FUCKING ROBBO!!
To be fair, every writer has endured go-overs at some point and I think that the 'war' is simply just a graf artist knocking Banksy off the pedestal a bit. Both artists are innovators and have large fanbases, so no-one can really argue that one is better than the other - both should probably just suck it up to be frank.
i think that banksy was trying to rep robbo with the original modification to the robbo tag, but i also think he made a poor decision doing so, it woulda been better to just leave it as it was. also, i think team robbo should have analyzed banksy's work more before getting offended
@MinkBomb...im saying that Banksy is an artist, and yes he did use Bleks influence in some of his work, and Banksy acknowledged that, he quoted-'just when i think ive done something original, Blek has done it 20 years ago'...and he did'nt 'copy' his style, he went to stencils because it was more quicker, Banksy is a clever artist whether people like it or not, he has put graffiti on the world map and has millions of followers, that is enough to call him a genius my friend..
i will spray any banksy piece i see with a fire extinguisher sprayer. Banksy's pieces all of a sudden make a building worth millions whereas grafitti devalues property, but there would be no banksy without graffitti first . Street Art is for scary-ass art school hipsters..leave graff to the real hoodfellas
There is a longer program called graffiti wars if you can find it it goes more into depth about what happened between these two with robbo starring in it just before he died well worth a watch puts things straight!
Yeah, he is. But he's the king of making statements on walls. Robbo doesn't make statements, he puts his name. On a wall. The difference is one does art on a wall and the other designs art on a computer or paper, then cuts it out and uses it on a wall. And, in response to the actual video, I don't think Banksy has any reason to respond to some small-timer disrespecting him, Robbo must seem kind of like an internet troll to him.

RIP robbo
the street cred bit is more likely to do with the fact banksy was a public school boy than him being from bristol
team robbo all the way
Love the Graffiti of Banksy (Robert Del Naja). I have a couple of Prints. The Banksy vs Robbo war will not end well for either.
banksy is much better than robbo I'm sticking with him
Robbo is awesome, Banksy is awesome , end of fucking story.
Banksy is a toy
awild shite he's a fucking stencil cutter
@@killerjoe3025 Yep he does fucking nothing he has no skills
Id agree but i bet banksy can still paint letters given the chance... tbh hes good at what he does its his credibility and followers that frown upon graffiti unless its by banksy that pisses me off .. im a writer myself i love graff but i let mental health take over so havnt been active in years just the odd sketch here and there call him a sell out but given half the chance any artist would sellout for the money banksy makes
It's not about the art but the message
@@Direpig in graff you need some quality to your piece
that pigeon was like.. imma just land here real quick.
All I see of robbing is his name banksy does much better art
Toon2121 its graffiti, doesnt all banksy does is wheatpaste and stencils
sometimes graffiti writers act like such kids , just respect each other i guess
This guy doesnt know a damn think about what hes talkin about everything he said was so off..
"Did you paint over Robbo’s piece and have him beaten up?
His piece in Camden had been dogged for more than five years by the time I painted that spot. It’s a real shame about his accident and I hope he fully recovers. I would never deliberately cuss Robbo - he’s a graffiti legend.
And he’s bigger than me."
there is one artist shown in this vid whos got war against Banksy!!! 10FOOT
I haven't gained nearly enough fame banksy has but when it comes to graff I could careless who sees my shit. Look me up and try to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about. BELK1 Lords running out of cali. Banksy gets mad props for displaying shit worth seeing.
Lets get this straight
Banksy = Street Artist
Robbo = Graffiti Writer
Its like comparing apples and bananas people, just stop.
If I were Banksy I wouldn't care, I would keep doing my art, it doesn't matter, what other people think, it's art.
that dude in the video is the same guy on exit through the gift shop praising mr brainwashes work lmfao
I don't respect Banksy as a grattifi writer, but I think he is one of the greatest modrn artists. Gotta love this guy
Bro said high tide on the canal 💀
Calm with Banksy...just some stencils !..
If this guy became a newspaper columnist critiquing graffiti, I would SO read it... Well done, guy.
Banksy is a street artist which for some reason his art is allowed. Kinda like being a legal prostitute its wrong but somehow legal.
first off, street art can be a lot of things. painting on a wall is called graffiti. second, banksy started his "street-art" career by doing traditional stylized letter graffiti.
As someone who does spray graffiti and when i say graffiti i do more productions rather than tagging, but do do both, not street art is what the call banksy, all i can realy say is that there are plenty of blank walls in the uk, and along that canal, to directly go other another writers work like that, is complete disrespect, and to a founder at the time is just wrong, bansky made a big error there, and alot of people will jump on the bandwagon and do everything to destroy his work,
TEAM BANKSY!!!
Banksy is the middle class version of Graffiti
They're different hence the conflict. Banksy is an artist and robbo is a graffiti runaway
In Graff WE have the same Vision. Fuck... Disorders in that
there is another piece you missed that Banksy did that is in Camden.
@klaussej I know it was getting tired....but the piece had been there for ever. banksy still capped an icon,
@DD9338 I agree with that to some extend but it is also about history. Think about the robbo piece as if it was the house of your childhood. Now this house wasn't necessarily a beautiful home but think about the memories that go with the house. Your first room, all the christmases and birthdays and all inbetween. If this house now got torn down and replaced with something really "beautiful" would you rather keep the house or would you chose something beautiful but with no soul?
obviously it was gona piss robbo off..if he had a piece of work in for 25 years untouched until bansky came along... i use to think bansky did his work free hand...he uses stencil....cheat.....robbo did the portrait of lenny kravits daughter free hand..true artist and talent.
if you watch graffiti wars you will see the irony of the councils protecting banksy "art work" and buffing graff next to it.....
Banksy and King Robbo... never in the same place at the same time, huh...
This dude walks mad funny lol...
Robbo is English. This boy obviously has an American accent...Food for thought.
There is a longer program called graffiti wars if you can find it it goes more into depth about what happened between these two with robbo starring in it just before he died well worth a watch puts things straight!
this guy knows his shit
Yeah, he is. But he's the king of making statements on walls. Robbo doesn't make statements, he puts his name. On a wall. The difference is one does art on a wall and the other designs art on a computer or paper, then cuts it out and uses it on a wall. And, in response to the actual video, I don't think Banksy has any reason to respond to some small-timer disrespecting him, Robbo must seem kind of like an internet troll to him.
