I don't think All Might got the memo that Deku and Bakugo have to be alive in order to learn something from this experience.

@@dooda9566 I always interpreted that as the teachers intentionally leaving a path to victory or not covering a weakness rather than them literally pulling their punches. Things like Present Mic not closing the distance to rush them, or Nezu actively not closing off one path, and of course Izawa choosing to retreat instead of capitalizing on Yaoyarozu's mistake. The attacks they launch are full force, but they don't press their advantage as much as they really could in a real fight.
All Might uses the Baloo style of teaching :P
All Might WAS holding back... A lot. The first city destroying punch was max power (probably). After that it was mainly intimidation tactics. The fact that Bakugo took like a dozen hits is evidence that All Might was holding back significantly. He could have one shot them both before they knew what was happening, though that would defeat the purpose of the exam.
1 shot at 100 percent and we are getting what's left of Bakugou off that building with a mop, so yeah, he was holding back, but same goes for villains, so he is holding back against them too.
Have you noticed that Bakugo also tries to reflect All Might's confident heroic smile in battle? It's something I really love, because although the smile appears sinister due to his personality, he's still doing his best to be a hero just like All Might
Bullshit, you don't All-Might discriminate againist 20% of the population or suicide-bait a friend. They are nothing alike.
It’s kinda funny how the odds are stacked against them, not in a traditional sense, but in an emotional sense. Plus All Might is just really strong 😅
Factual, even if Toshi's actively losing his power
Bakugo has all the potentials to be a villain with his backstory.
His growth throughout the entire series is one of the best character development I've seen.
Sorry but how exactly does Bakugo's backstory give him potential to be a villain? He was born to a loving family, was popular among his community, then received the perfect quirk for following his dreams and was showered with endless praise. Why exactly should he be a villain? 😅

This feels really spoiler ish. I never watched this anime so I am just watching along and I always thought Bakugo might turn bad. But you make it sound like he wont.
It was important for Deku to go back in that moment because it was the moment his need to save someone triumphed over the pedastal he'd put All Might on. Deku's big flaw in this fight was that All Might was this impossibly godlike figure that he couldn't imagine overpowering--even though succeeding him is literally what he's trying to do and the nature of his quirk means that he WILL surpass him one day--so it was really important that this fight ended with him punching All Might in the face
Bakugo episodes always slap different. Best character arc in the show.

@TechnoArpan Nah. Endeavor is good but Bakugo's character is more comprehensive, series-spanning and meticulously plotted. The care and attention given to him is nothing less than insane of the sort
I find it funny how they pointed out how allmight's VA was good at making him sound like a villain, considering one of his most famous roles used to be a villain, and bakugo was acting a lot like said former villain in this episode imo

It's crazy Midoriya and Bakugo idolize the same hero, but for different reasons. I wonder how things would've turned out if both All-Might and Endeavor were both the #1 hero. Would Bakugo still idolize him as much then?
While All Might was No.1, Endeavor was behind him as No.2, so I’m pretty sure young Bakugou was as interested about pro heroes as Deku was, even though he wasn’t outwardly nerdy about it. So I think they both knew of Endeavor, they just don’t think he’s anywhere near as cool as AM.😅
@@veraaurelis8931 The point is that Bakugo is immediately drawn to All Might because he is number 1, the best. So the question is that if Endeavor had managed to become number when Bakugo was younger, even if just because All Might retired, how would that have shape his idea of a hero.
I'm sure all the students watching that match were, at some point, thinking "I'm glad I didn't get matched up against All Might."
At the same time, I bet all the teachers watching the match were thinking the same thing about facing Bakugo and Deku.
The thing is, just like his body moving before his mind in the entrance exam, in a real life situation if he leaves bakugo behind bakugo most likely dies, saving him when he doesn't "have to" is more of him being a true hero regardless of it being an exam

I think it’s fine for there to be different types of heroes with different motivations. Bakugo is valid. His mindset would be useful in situations that Deku’s wouldn’t, or a rescue focused hero. It takes all types.
Except that a hero with explosive personality doesn't usually end well (Jason Todd).
(At 13:59) I don't think it was the "weight" that hurt his shoulder. I think it was the "force of impact" or the recoil that almost dislocated it.

My favorite part of this episode to this day has to be when Bakugo was under All Mights boot and thought how powerful he is while being the greatest hero and an unstoppable force. Meanwhile it pans to All Might holding Midoriya, symbolizing he will be the next greatest!
Damn, I cannot watch this episode without my face splitting ear to ear in a grin. Everything about it is so emotional and badass.
Something in which i dont think anyone properly talks about, is Bakugos brain... hes actually smart, a couple of times he learned from his experiences... the first combat lesson with all might to minimise damage
But also when he throws deku, its a nod to the sports festival race... where deku uses bombs to fly over and get ahead!
I love the thing All might does where one eye glows, its terrifying!

No. All Might is a hundred percent really holding back. If he wasn't, that punch to the gut would have Bakugo to literally explode. He'd just be guts and bones and blood.
In my experience the 1 glowing eye in anime is always just trying to sell how powerful and determined a character is
I never though of this fight as Deku's "Deku vs Todoroki" moment bur with Bakugo, but it's interesting , Deku's encouragement wih Todoroki being if you want to be a hero use your full power and with Bakugou being "dont you dare say youd rather loose, lets win this kacchan!!", esencial leaving the tournament match
And the final exam aside to help Todoroki and Bakugou grow to be even better heroes, Deku is amazing

Man all might just couldnt let Endeavor beat kids by himself
All-Might vs Deku (4) and Bakugo (3)
Target: Both
Today’s Menu: Buildings and road (Designed to be failed test #2)
These 2 made the biggest mistakes in their progression so far. Deku involved non-trained, non-licensed civilians to backup against Stain, and Bakugo learned Jack at his internship and is a consistent bully. (We know Deku was trying to get everyone out, but the report had to be from Native the only hero witness and he can’t read Deku’s mind) And was in DESPERATE need of being humbled. So they were put against All-Might with each other as punishment.
So let’s point out some things. Every single shot was a kill shot. We can talk about concussions, but there was not a single punch, kick, slam, or ANYTHING that wouldn’t cause whiplash, concussions, cracked bones, and just small things like Deku bouncing 10 feet INTO A BUS AND MOVING THE BUS SEVERAL FEET OFF A BOUNCE, these two were made PAVEMENT. (Also if your spine makes the same sound effect as a WATER BOTTLE GETTING STEPPED ON, CALL AN AMBULANCE ASAP) Not to mention those weights actually hurt a HELL of a lot more than helped them. All-Might is 560 lbs. so his weights total to 280 lbs. 6 total. So each ring weight weighs over 45 lbs. Now imagine getting punched by 90 EXTRA lbs for his punches, and getting stomped on with 45 lbs of extra weight. That actually hurts WAY more.
All-Might…didn’t get hurt by these kids. How do I know? There isn’t a mark on him, OR his clothes. Not ONE scuff. (Also whatever super gel All-Might uses to keep his hair from moving even when blasted by EITHER of them) And Deku used slipshod 15% control to get All-Might off of Bakugo to save him. Red veins, big wind current, the whole shebang. That’s 170 mph to the face and all it did was make All-Might turn his head. Again, not a scratch to be seen. The only thing that did ANYTHING to him was his own time limit. And NOTHING else. Bakugo’s explosions didn’t even do anything to knock back All-Might since he flew through them no problem. Plus now that we know OFA’s main quirk is stockpile, All-Might’s muscle form must be him ACTUALLY expanding his body with sheer raw ENERGY. Which acts as a shield for anything beneath his level. And since All-Might’s OFA IN ACTION lasts about an hour, they had no hope of depleting him.
I have no idea what extent All-Might was holding back for in this fight, but even if All-Might used just 1% of what he can do NOW when he made impacts with the kids, he would STILL be moving 230 mph to Deku’s and Bakugo’s 57 mph. That’s still QUADRUPLE their controllable top speed. (Bakugo flying appears to be identical in speed to Deku’s 5% full cowling) And All-Might is griping HARD about his speed because he’s ALREADY 1/60th of his old best. So that’s why All-Might is griping so much about his speed. At this level difference I don’t think if Bakugo and Deku actually got him in his WEAK SPOT it would do ANYTHING.
If Bakugo won this exam and beat a pro, his pride would inflate beyond recovery in all likelihood. As for Deku, this is more All-Might trying to show Deku even if he GETS to All-Might’s injured level, it’s STILL not likely going to be CLOSE to enough to face AFO. (Deku did NOT grasp just how unbelievably serious his circumstances just became) All-Might had EVERY reason to fail Deku intentionally since extra classes are nothing but beneficial to his successor. He WANTS him to learn as much as possible as fast as possible. They likely lost their cuffs in the 1st attack, and there was ZERO reasonable way they could ever escape the top hero. All-Might when he wasn’t doing any fancy moves just PRANCED across the battlefield. So everything was to humble them both as MUCH as possible.
Deku luckily figured out not just EXACTLY what he needed to do against Stain to finish the fight, but did EXACTLY what made All-Might so proud All-Might intentionally let them win. (In such a way Deku would learn how to throw himself into oblivion with even MORE reckless abandon as that is what OFA is for…but is DETRIMENTAL to Deku’s self worth and basic survival instincts.) All-Might’s instantaneous sprints could’ve kept going to stop them had he chosen, since he had already stopped coughing as he watched for a WHILE as they escaped, he knew their plan to win of divided hit and run, and he had enough time in his form to carry them to Recovery Girl STILL IN MUSCLE FORM, and STILL wearing the weights. He LET them win. And while his classmates are INSANELY proud of them, ESPECIALLY Deku, but there’s not a soul who thinks these 2 actually bested All-Might. And since they don’t know about his time limit, the kids likely saw All-Might bad acting as he sat and waited for them to get to certain locations on the battlefield. Prancing, sitting and waiting, checking if his weights were loose, coughing unconvincingly (again from their perspective) from the STRONGEST MAN ON THE PLANET. XD if the kids thought that the other teachers were taking it easy on them but didn’t know for sure, they know NOW.
Favorite fight of the season if you couldn’t guess it. To think this is really about unearthing Bakugo’s undying desire to achieve All-Might’s title from being a perfect hero by ALWAYS winning. This was just a GIGANTIC humble session for everyone here. And some organ rearranging. Gotta clean and sort your innards once in a while.
Oh all might definitely going easy on them. They're lucky he chose to be more of a brawler in this fihht cause his other moves have range and different wind effects. He couldve just stood on one spot the whole time and they wouldnt be able to run away if he chose to. In Vigilantes, we see him throw a Nebraska Smash, a punch that creates a small tornado that sucks up enemies.
@@tobofu5978let’s just be grateful their lungs didn’t pop when All-Might unleashed his 1st attack. Because THAT I’m pretty sure might’ve been much closer to the Mach 30 air blast that kept everyone from so much as being in PROXIMITY of the Nomu battle. And I’m not even convinced it was that much power considering his weights
I have two questions that I would like your thoughts on. 1) Do you think All Might should have gone easier or them? 2) In the previous seasons you kept pointing out what a bad teacher All Might actually is (which he is), but that makes me wonder what you think of his teaching style/skill here.
@@Smartie234 you see I’m in one of two minds here. Apart of me is angry with All-Might for just BEANING these kids all over the place. But it was also IMMENSELY satisfying. Not for poor Deku, he didn’t deserve this. And he pretty much broke his spine. But Bakugo has been such an insufferable bully that I wanted him getting EVERY BIT OF THIS. He made every single one of these decisions of his own accord and even clarified to make it WORSE for Bakugo. Bakugo’s treatment of Deku has not improved in the SLIGHTEST and Deku was even trying to get Bakugo to by Deku’s words “use me.” This is HIS way of trying to get around the bullying. And it works SLIGHTLY but VERY temporary and conditional.
The aspect of All-Might’s bad teaching that stuck out to me wasn’t as much as him railing the kids, but when he told Bakugo it’s easier to level up as a novice. Bakugo HAS noticed things like Deku can out force him with his 100%, so All-Might is almost reinforcing something that Bakugo fears more than ANYTHING and that is Deku is likely to end up stronger than he is. (And if he only knew that Deku is quite literally the chosen one of a power SPECTRUMS ahead of EVERYONE and is CURRENTLY kicking his butt with All-Might.) But you can see by the end how thoroughly disturbed All-Might is by Bakugo not just hurting himself but REFUSING the lesson and wanting this all on his terms. (And in fairness All-Might telling Bakugo that you shouldn’t hurt yourself while LITERALLY holding his head 3 feet deep in dirt you JUST pressed him in, is not very effective) And at the end of the day, it’s not on All-Might’s perfect record as a hero that did this to Bakugo. Nor the overpraising of adults shown in season 1. There’s something that is likely willing him EVEN MORE than maintaining that standard. Bakugo is thoroughly disturbed by an unseen insecurity.
This test is actually one of All-Might’s better circumstances. And it’s also HYSTERICAL Aizawa told him make sure Bakugo and Deku learn something. And All-Might said “Got it.” And just BELTED them. That is genuinely funny.
Theres a reason this episode is one of my favorites because it’s SO much more complex than it looks in a way I can’t explain as of now. All I can say is extra layers to this episode do come on rewatch.
@@Kaempfdog Thank you for you answer! It sure isn't an episode I mind rewatching. I thought it was time Bakugo would learn this lesson. All I was thinking was 'get wrecked' when he said he would toy with All Might until just before the timer runs out. That is so nasty and egocentrical on so many levels. He is clearly so very much stuck in his own head. Though I don't think he learned the lesson yet. I think this definitely planted seeds for his growth. But I'll see. 😁

Bakugo can't keep doing those big blasts tho, It said earlier that his power is that his sweat is explosive, and in the sports festival he even said after he did that big blast to stop all the falling debris that it was close to blowing up his arm, if he uses his blasts to regularly he can blow up his limbs, which is crazy to think about, that's why the gauntlets hold his sweat and allow him to fire off the big blasts without harming himself.

One of the first things All Might said was not to treat the exam like an exam, but to treat it as if it was real. And in reality Deku would never leave his teammate behind
One note: in anime parlance a character's "origin" is not necessarily their literal chronological starting point or backstory, but rather their core source of strength, what motivates them. It often is something rooted in their past, but is much more than simply their background.

Deku loses all rationality when it comes to Bakugou. I think, more than anything, that is so telling to just how important of a figure Bakugou is in Izuku's life, and how much of an impact he's had on Izuku's development.
Yeah, the kid may have bullied him, but despite all of that Izuku still greatly admires Bakugou and sees him as capable of becoming an ideal hero. Like you said, Izuku literally reverts to his childhood self. He can't help but see all the great parts of Katsuki when Katsuki can't even see them himself.
I would honestly argue that, on an admiration level, Izuku admires Katsuki almost as much as he admires All Might. As a kid, he looked at Katsuki and saw someone who was so fearless and unbeatable, when Katsuki feels the opposite of those things about himself.
Turning back for Katsuki in this fight isn't even a question in Izuku's mind, because once Katsuki made himself vulnerable and it looked like he was going to lose it didn't matter that they were taking a test or not. It might as well have been a real life or death battle. There was no way Izuku wasn't turning back for Katsuki.
Their feelings about each other may be complex, but Izuku cares deeply about Katsuki regardless.

i feel bakugou giving him the gauntlet and trying to serve as the one who held back all might so midoriya could escape was bakugou trying to justify the cooperation by his bringing up that loser in power enough to help in the first case and just he needed to stay behind to save that loser so obviously he's the better hero. then midoriya came back and punched all might and i imagine if bakugou was in better condition he would have started fighting midoriya over that again
Watching Izuku and Katsuki interact in this episode makes me very uncomfortable.

This exam in particular was something that shook me when watching for the first time.
I was in a similar mindset as Izuku and thought any form of fighting All Might was a non-starter.
I thought Bakugo had way too much pride and was going to get Izuku failed.
But as it turns out, Izuku also needed to stop viewing All Might as an unstoppable force, because the fact of the matter is that he *was* stopped. All for One was able to cripple All Might, and that was back at All Might's peak.
Izuku needed a serious wake-up call about what lurks in the shadows, and to stop looking at All Might as someone who can't be surpassed. And as it turns out Bakugo was the best classmate to remind Izuku that there can, will be, and are people on All Might's level, because the human drive to get what they want is terrifying.
I agree, especially that Izuku is one of the ones who knows Allmight has weaknesses and still sees him as unstoppable is it's own handicap.

All Might heard about Endeavour's actions against Todoroki and decided he wanted a slice of that pie. Homeboy did -not- hold back here. xD
This episode is just pure emotion because Deku and Bakugo just can't work things out. Bakugo is so obsessed with not running away that he's neglecting strategy. But Deku is so focused on All Might being his idol that the only thing on his mind is to run away. He's not even considering fighting as an option. And the moment either party closes themselves off to a potential other idea, failure is on the horizon. So them both finally deciding to work together hits so much harder. Bakugo was willing to hurt himself just so Deku could have a chance at victory, and Deku was willing to compromise the victory he would've had just to help Bakugo. Their friendship is a little rocky but I loved the way they came together in this episode. The "Origin" episodes are always a blast.
Now, onward to the villains...
Deku was being so stubborn. Just let Bakugo run in alone and fight All-Might while he runs away to the exit. It's the easiest, simplest plan, but Deku just cannot let anything go ever. He can't let a problem go unfixed. It's a major weakness of his that comes back later.
The interesting thing is that Deku's admiration for All Might made him choose what's probably the worst option possible. Yes, All Might is unbeatable, which is why most villains flee from him. On top of being number 1, All Might is probably the hero who has the most experience when it comes to catching people running away. Deku basically put All Might in his comfort zone by focusing too hard on them escaping.

@@WhereMerx That's BS, you saw at the end how far Bakugo was willing to go to fight All Might, he was litearlly breaking his own body and Deku still goes back to save him even after that. He risked both of them passing for absolutely no reason.

Whenever I see the hard cut to the trashcan when Bokugou elbows Deku in the back alley, I can't help but believe it's supposed to be symbolism for their current relationship.
19:43 Worth noting that a lot of people overlook (including me for a long time) is that with each one of the strikes he blasts off every two seconds Bakugou is detonating an explosion in his palm. He then has to absorb all that force into his wrists, arms and elbows. If he blasts too many he'll be retiring cause his joint just gave up on him at age 30
Bakugo is actually very smart. He knows his powers inside and out. He knows that each attack he does puts strain on his muscles and nerves. The bigger the explosion the greater the risk of damaging himself.
He understands his powers are a double edged sword. And that it works like a muscle. When we over work a muscle we can damage ourselves. He knows he can do three big attacks a day without destroying his own muscles. The gauntlets help soak up the blowback and let him store ammo for attacks. And act as shields.
The screen flashes as he's pushing himself to the limit represent him destroying his muscles, nerves, bones, etc.
He will sacrifice anything to win. As h s biting down on all might that's him declaring he will sacrifice everything. And he's awake only with raw will power.
You’ve gotta remember that it’s canon that a lot of quirks come with secondary powers that help with their baseline abilities. Not all of them, there are a lot of examples of strong quirks lacking those inherent safety features a lot of others have, like Kamanari with his brain getting fried and Dabi with his skin, but look at someone like Gran Torino. Remember, All Might mastered One For All’s power so quickly that the only way Torino could teach him was by sparring with him. SPARRING. WITH ALL MIGHT. We see the same with Bakugo and his gauntlets, since he uses them without any trouble whatsoever, but Midoriya nearly loses an arm using just one. There’s also the fact that Bakugo’s explosions don’t move him in the slightest if he doesn’t want them to, so long as he has good footing. Hell, look at his fight with Midoriya after the provisional license exam. Not only does his body manage to tank a fuckton of blows from Midoriya using 8% of OFA without much issue, he fucking throws the guy using one arm to destroy a fucking steel railing. That’s likely not even the limit of his physical strength, and he probably also has heat resistant skin and tougher eyes and ears to deal with the light and sound generated by his explosions. Like I said, not everyone has a quirk with safety features built in, but Bakugo does and he uses them to disgusting effect.

When bakugo says "I will win this" in this ep I'm always reminded of what he told deku in THAT scene in s6 "stop trying to win this by yourself", he's come so far (even farther in manga) and I genuinely get so emotional watching that growth over again lol.
This is like one of two moments where the dub changing the dialogue slightly actually takes away from script because of Bakugo's plan. He knew they couldn't out run All Might, not that he is the type run in the first place. In the original he talks about how he will wear him down and attack with a decisive blow rather than the "toy with him" statement we get here. It implies he intended to do a battle of attrition relying on All Might being weighted down now and his own quirk growing strong as he sweats for a big attack. Then of course when they are in the alley he more or less spells it out to Deku that running doesn't work, and he has realized a battle of attrition wont work either since his smaller blasts do nothing, and opts reluctantly for a hit and run strategy.
Also All Might doesn't compliment Bakugo smiling even as he faces defeat in the original but rather comes to the realization that all this time he was smiling in the same All Might does no matter how difficult it is. I'm surprised these things were not updated after the simulcast dub considering I noticed some of the lines have changed in the version you are watching.

You missed the point. Bakugo's right. Winning is what makes a hero. So is Midoriya that a hero needs to save people. Both of them learned about a specific quality of All Might and idolized him for it. All Might recognizes that both of those are important. The best intentions mean nothing if people die because you're too weak.
