In this episode of HiLow, James Pumphrey and Nolan Sykes compare a $900 Smittybilt 2783 Overlander roof top tent vs a $3500 iKamper Skycamp hard shell rooftop tent to see if more expensive equals more better.
About HiLow:
HiLow is where we compare high end-expensive car parts to really cheap car products to see if there really is a performance difference.

Glad to see low team actually got a fighting chance this time, going by the last two episodes I was expecting them to be given a garbage bag and a stick for a tent
True! The winch was rediculous! A high lift jack instead would have won it, or just a cheap electric winch..
I’d take the low tent, 110%
@@aaronmonheim6428 Agreed. In addition to being heavier, mounting the iKamper up high significantly raises the center of gravity of their rig. We'll see if that affects their trip in the next video...
Agreed 100%, they could've thrown a little more at low truck for the winch and lights without even approaching hi truck.

I have had the Smittybilt XL tent for 2 years (78 nights camping) and the small version like yours for 2 years prior. They have both been very well built IMO and survived numerous hard thunderstorms in Colorado, Utah, Big Bend, New Mexico and the Texas coast. One trick to any roof top tent IMO is to get an air mattress. For the small Smittybilt, I used a full-size. For the XL, I use a queen size air mattress. A Ryobi 18v compressor inflates it in just 2 minutes. Best part is that since the air mattress takes up MUCH less room when deflated, you gain a TON of additional storage when the tent is closed (prior to putting on the travel cover. I can actually store 2 small duffels and a few other items in the space the foam mattress used to occupy. You just fold the tent closed and the the one side (between the hinges) will be wide open to load up stuff. Once loaded, put the cover on and roll.
Im looking at getting one rn but idk yet if 1400 is good for a roof tent im putting on my bed of my avalanche
Yeah dude for $3500 I'd expect at least some lights and USB plugs. Low truck def won the tent challenge in my book. I would like to see them tested in a snowy night though...
I feel like a newer truck would be perfect for that because of the truck bed outlets.
Light and usb charger with a solar panel on top to power them. Definitely not worth $3500 in my book. A pop up tent Rv would be a better option and I’ve seen those for $3500 and up. Those also come with a toilet, sink and an actual twin/full bed

Give Nolan the high team next season. I would love to see how James n Zach deal with the cheaper more labour intensive parts
There were several episodes this season when the expensive parts were much more labor intensive. But yeah, Aaron and Nolan deserve to ball out next.

I keep on coming back to this video because it reinvigorated my desire for camping. Pre-eighteen, my family and I used to go camping like 8-10 times a year, but as you get more experience, you start upgrading more. We went from a tent, to tent trailer, to trailer, to RV, and once you start getting up there it feels less-and-less like camping and more like a hassle because of all the preparation.
Roof-top tents really feel like a great mix between tent camping with modern amenities to make it easier.
That's so hot bro did you ever catch your parents banging in their tent?

I like how James doesn't try to hide the fact that he's just as baffled at these prices as we are.
It’s cause people are stupid enough to pay these prices. I’d pay $500 for something durable. My $115 tent sets up in under 3 minutes, but takes like 10 minutes to put away. WOW so long. My bed tent takes like 10 minutes to setup and 3 minutes to put away. Biggest downside to the bed tent is clearing the bed.
I roll with a ground tent. Cost me $80 and goes up in 5 minutes. Goes down in 5 minutes. I don't have to drive around with some shit on my truck and don't need to find a spot to store it. Plus if I don't want to put my stuff away to go for a drive, I leave it where it is.
Luis G good points! I enjoy the rooftop tent and I think my lady likes it more haha. The gas sucks on it but I’m in a Jeep anyways. The Jeep barley has any storage so it’s cool to keep pillows and such in the tent and also have a foam mattress to sleep on
I sleep in the seat of the truck. Takes like, no minutes to set up or put away. And it's air conditioned.
@@Skinflaps_Meatslapper I've got a mattress in the back of my Rav4. I can sleep anywhere, and no one will even know there's someone sleeping in it.

Absolutely. I’m quite new to being into cars and am intimated at times by all the knowledge and complexity of them. However, I’d feel quite chill around this team and wouldn’t feel like I didn’t belong or wouldn’t be welcome at all.

Regarding camping in winter, someone else might have already answered, but the low tent seems to be more apt for it.
Number one priority in winter camping is sufficient ventilation, to avoid condensation, that will get your sleeping bag humid, and thus, ineffective to keep you warm.
Second most important thing is to have enough support in case it snows during the night. Snow doesn't drip down the roof, and it's heavy.
We had a surprise snowfall during the night on mother's day weekend.... one of the tents collapsed... that's how the occupants woke up 😬
The real lesson we should have all learned from this series is, thoughtful choices and a good selection of high and low end items that FIT your needs, is where to spend your money. If you get the wrong thing, you'll never get past that
Have owned both tents and spent ~ 40 nights in each and this assessment is spot on. Skycamp is nice but would expect more for the price. USB chargers, lights? Something other than fabric map.
James: "HiTrucks tent is 3.5 times more expensive than LowTrucks".
Me: "HiTrucks tent is 3 times more expensive than my car lol".
Oof
But u own it right ? No payment no nothin
I paid 600 for my tahoe I feel that haha
i paid 500 for my s10 runs and drives just needed seats, so the ride home was scary
Sleep in the car gang ayyy
Is it just me or does even $900 for a tent with a floor seem batshit insane?
then you wont pay $7500 for one
@@tonyrobinson3342 no sane person would.
Yes that shit should cost no more than 500
I got mine for roughly $750 from the wholesaler before tax. From a material perspective, was it even worth that amount? Probably not, but the level of convenience of being able to get a comfortable night of sleep after traveling all day is pretty nice ngl and in the long run you can save quite a bit of money.
@@michaelelias2300 there's still other options that are more convenient and way cheaper though. That's why it seems kinda like a waste of money.
I love watching these dudes, they're so real.
Just open, honest, and genuine guys that love doing what they do. Classic.
Both builds are looking super sick at this point. I’d buy either if I had the chance.
I would go cheap no doubt, the expensive one as Pumphrey said left too much Wow factor on the table;. In place of a map;
hard topped one could have easily integrated so much more a soft tent could not: An little 20-40watt exterior solar panel, a battery pack with a tender to prevent overcharge/heat, interior lighting, usb charger for fans/mobile and still have room for an acrylic window.
Solar panels, wiring and acrylics hate kinking. In this day and age that could increase build cost by $300 tops. If it had that, I would pay $3k or it.
Both builds would still go for $15k+ on craigslist rn. :(

Great video guys. We have low team $900 tent. Same ladder. 3 weeks ago we were camping in the Victorian high country (Australia). Around midnight the wife got up to go to the bathroom. She couldn't find the ladder, turned around and slipped from the very top. Broke both wrists and faceplanted, leaving gravel embedded in her face, a huge lump and needing stitches in various places. 4 hr drive out to a hospital. (Needless to say it could have even worse) Those ladders are DANGEROUS! We will likely get rid of our tent now, but I would definitely recommend grip tape on the rungs (and maybe a fall mat!)
Thank you so much for this! I have been back-and-forth with buying a tent, and this really helps!
At 16 seconds in, I love how you put the Bigfoot walking past in the background between the 2 trucks.😁

I need to know what happened to high truck’s bumper, and potentially a revisit on that episode’s outcome since it bent up so easily.
So with Tacomas (all models), the mounts for the bumper bolt into where the crash bar was. These are very thin plates since it was only ever designed and engineered to absorb impact, not the opposite and pull other vehicles up mountains, hills, and out of ditches.
A common upgrade for anyone who actually uses their winch or recovery points on plate bumpers is to cut the original mount off, and replace it with fabricated brackets from thicker plate steel and fillet weld them to the frame.
Another popular and sturdy option is a BAMF Front bumper reinforcement brackets from 2005-current models.
@@styledliving buy a bar that is designed to be used to recover. I do on my 4x4. Plus two rated.recovery points at the front and one at the rear. It's only like 150aud dollar to do this.
I was wondering if anyone else noticed that, I would definitely like to see what happened
@@timothybrant3765 they touched tips and low car won.
@@styledliving that is pretty common among first gen owners, but when the bumper is installed correctly it isn’t necessary. After they initially received slew of complaints about it, ARB added mounting hardware into the kit for the bumper brackets to be essentially pinned in place through the frame with a 3/8” gr. 5 bolt and a sleeve. One of the guys at the 4x4 shop I buy parts from actually worked at ARB when they figured this out. This got rid of the issue but the ARB instructions are so poor that most people don’t do it when they install. I honestly wouldn’t have known to do it if I hadn’t heard it from the guys at the shop. My guess is that they didn’t do this when they installed the bumper, which then put all the strain from the winch on the, frankly flimsy, frame endcaps.

This was awesome, thank you for making this video. I dont go camping that often but want to buy a roof top tent and make a point to get out there more often. Or just hookup a rear-view camera (if your 4x4 doesn't already have one). They are cheap as.
I love how the mounting was a draw, like there's literally no contesting the fact that the Smittybilt is better in that regard.
It's also interesting that the ikamper won the setup contest even though the Smittybilt took a minute longer but is ready to sleep in when you're done with it, whereas with the ikamper you still have to go get all your shit that you're going to put inside of it.
Yes, bit I think it was more of an issue of the rack they installed behing too beefy and not compatible with the tent
@@giadalussu1922 I understand that, that's part of the design of the smittybuilt. It's designed to be easy to mount, which is why it should have won that. I mean I dont care, I dont have any SB products, or a rooftop tent, it just didnt seem fair.
Kinda liked the light bar review. Cheap light bar was winning till the last minute and they all changed minds for no reason
I own a "iKamper 1.0" and can say that the mounting should be a draw. It really is luck of the draw when it comes to install. I know mine can literally be taken on or off in less than 2 min. With the use of a cordless drill driver. As far as being able to store your bedding under the shell, it has to be done in an exact way or it won't close but it does hold it. Biggest reason I switched to an I camper was the shell blocks the wind when set up right and I was able to comfortably sleep my wife and I and our two kids (4 and 5 y/o). It makes the overlanding experience fun because your only spending 10 - 20 min breaking camp in the morning so you can move to the next area and it keeps everything relatively clean. Breaking camp with a tent on the ground can get pretty dirty in my experience.
@@jaredslattery4584 I'm not taking anything away from the ikamper, I'm just simply saying that the Smittybilt has been designed to be very easily mountable just about anywhere.
Anytime you make a product that is one-size-fits-all, it's not going to be as good in some places as a specific product like the ikamper, but will also be better in others. Of course this is a sample set of one, and everyone's experience will be different, but there's just something dishonest about them literally showing that the Smittybilt is easier to mount and setup, but then saying the ikamper is....

I have been thinking of getting a roof top tent for a while now. My biggest thing was either hardshell or soft. From this, I didn't even think about the hardshell side not having a window, which isn't a huge thing but definitely not ideal. It would also be great to have the bed set up in there all the time, which the hardshell can not.
I also didn't quite think of the truck bed accessibility but not much you can do about that except putting in drawers. Great video though for sure
Love the artwork of the HiLow intro. I even noticed the upgrades you guys have done so far in the animation. Nicely done!
Buy a 900 dollar roof rack tent "put it on the ground."
Pretty compelling argument to just get a nice 200 dollar regular tent.
... and then put the regular tent on a sheet of plywood on the top of the car
Yeah just a fold up ground tent would be nice. Maybe some wheels on one end. Pull it out of your truck roll it to a flat spot and have it unfold like low teams tent. When your done camping just fold it. Wheel it to the truck and slid it on top of the stuff in your bed. If the tent had straps on it with a ratchet that would be cool. Just hook it, rachet it down with your stuff under it and your good to go. Someone needs to make something like that
When I'm out and it rains, it pours. It's very nice to be off the ground. I might be making an investment here soon...
first sponsor ad I haven't skipped in the start of the video
Both are nice and keep you off of the ground which is great when the weather takes a turn for the worse you can just keep sleeping. As an older dude I prefer my Palomino slide in pop up truck camper. It takes 5 minutes to set up not rushing and 10 to break down no hurry. Yes its pricey but at 4 in the morning when nature calls, it has a bathroom with toilet and shower.
