The issue with donut selling out. They don’t get to run the show the exact way they used to and new “rules/ideas” get implemented that are *highly recommended*
The five minute limit, and $500 limit for 5 unknown parts is too much of a disadvantage for low car. If you are on a budget, you have to research the parts to get a good value.
@@dirtrider88 I agree. I am using a $16 shift knob. And it’s definitely nicer than a 2g eclipse plastic shift knob. Nolan just didn’t have a chance to look for anything good. If you have money, it’s easy to just buy something expensive and it will probably be good
I almost got one of those NRG knobs, so glad my suspicions were proven correct and I didn't get it. My stock shift knob was so heavily worn from the previous owner, and the size of it didn't quite fit my hand. With having to replace the transmission due to wear, and with every aftermarket shift knob available for cheap being garbage, I ended up discovering that a Civic EG has the same thread pitch for its shift knob as my Xterra, only the knob itself is smaller. Got one from the local junkyard for a fiver and it's been a perfectly snug fit since. It even looks like it should be stock. Thanks for doing this episode. I'm shocked at half of the car stuff I see getting sold these days, so it's nice having real-world use reviews for the good and the bad.
To be fair this could be used as a public safety announcement to not skip out on quality parts on your car, i for one was shocked on just how bad those pedals looked.
TBH most people especially just starting out don't have 1k to upgrade stuff let alone interior stuff. Hell people buy max speeding rod coilovers for 400 and that's a more more important part of the chassis then lets say a head unit, or upgraded shift knob.
Truly the only necessary mod was the gauges on a track car. The oem versions worked well enough that on a budget you really don't need to swap out the wheel, knob, pedals or radio.
I think they could also better (if they wanted improved sound) go for a 2din so only text head unit, instead of an infotainment system. At 2 din head units you get a really solid one at 50 bucks.
@@gercobosch2870 if they insisted on swapping for a screen unit, they could have gotten the OBD2 Bluetooth adapter and used it as the auxiliary gauges, this saving money. Also the install looking bad was their fault, not the head unit.
I know it would be a lot to ask for, and it likely not to happen due to the increased cost and complexity, but this episode highlights what Ive been thinking for a while. I feel like we should have 3 cars, a hi-mid-lo series. For example with the pedals and shift knob. The cheapest of the cheap were literally no better than garbage, and the hi car expensive parts were so unreasonable most people wouldnt even consider it. There should be a middle ground, or the parts most people will really use. Low car shows the poor quality and potential danger of the cheapest parts, Mid car is an average real build, with budget quality parts, and Hi car is the insane, top of the line parts that most cant or wont afford. That would really highlight the parts where you dont want to go for the cheapest stuff, but also show where the most expensive are unnecessary. As it is, Hi car will win almost everything, because every part installed is that much better, and more expensive. However, the difference between a mid range part and top end might be negligible, in which case Mid car would be the best option, where otherwise it would be Hi car. For example, A $300 set of pedal covers are probably just a nice feeling as the $600 ones, but that comparison is missing here.
They should have a specialist on the vehicle build the middle tier car that way you know it’s what people would actually do. I don’t know a single wrx owner with a Garrett turbo in it.
Totally agree. Having a time limit is going to affect the lower budget shopper much harsher than a high budget. Also the fact that they used Ebay which is complete trash for this type of random item shopping. Ebay even made hi car look bad.
Yeah that seemed like an unnecessary complication for this episode. Would have rather them spent more time researching and explaining what they were looking for than just "time attacking" the shopping.
Yeah I totally agree. There are absolutely cheap options for all those parts that could come under the budget but you have to look around a bit. I also don't really like them only using eBay motors for this type of stuff. It's clearly hurting low team a lot. Amazon, AliExpress, and other normal stores have tons of options for this type of stuff. $50 Amazon head units can definitely be solid. It would also be nice to see Nolan be able to make the decision to not replace some parts. The stock STI pedals are great for example.
@@UnluckycharmsGaming eBay motors is the sponsor, so that doesn't surprise me, unfortunate they are probably obligated to only shop there. And agreed on the stock parts, although these aren't STIs.

I love how Nolan answers the correct question and james says noooo lmao I love the level of friendship on donut. Been a fan since day one it never gets old
I love this series and look forward to every episode. I do have to say though I prefer when there is time and thought put in the purchases. Because yah if you just do the cheapest thing you can find with little to no research it’s a good chance it’s going to be garbage. But doing proper research on low or high can make each item show real pros and cons. Long story short I didn’t really care for the whole time attack purchasing but it does at least show don’t make rushed purchases. Keep up the good work!
Totally agree. I think it could be even cooler if they gave a time limit to the high car and unlimited research time for the low car so we can see if a well researched budget option can stack up to an impulsive expensive one
This episode should be called "How to throw away money if you are rich and stupid vs poor and stupid". Absolute waste of money. Don't be like this, do your research.
you’re so right- the only way the poor can get a good deal is by taking copious amounts of time investigating for sales or cheaper alternatives with similar results and features.
I feel like this time high car is doing a lot better than low car by a heavier margin then usually, also this time limit kinda hurts the whole idea of this series, its not really a good comparison anymore
I understand where you’re coming from with the time limit limiting the possibilities, but this was just a fun episode that didn’t majorly impact the performance of each car, however I don’t think Hi car is much better than Low Car, each major performance comparison they’ve been pretty close, especially after hi cars multiple engine ending schemes
@@ragingviking5712 well the past few episodes high car flew massively ahead and while i get this was a more fun episode i feel like this show typically compares well chosen budget options to the highest end stuff and this one kinda killed that cause usually you gotta put more thought into low end parts and this one kinda lacked that thought process and kinda misrepresented the budget options in this case, they kinda talked about that in the video but i feel like it they had at least gone over that and had more of a discussion at the end like they used to it at least would have made that more clear to the viewer, its an entertaining video but doesn't represent the series well
@@ragingviking5712 oh and I wasn't complaining about high car pulling ahead by a lot, in this kind of car spending more money does tend to shave time off and even small improvements are very important and it shows a lot of the more expensive stuff is definitely worth it and a few things aren't
I would like to officially request a video on tire chains. There are so many different chain options and some of them seem very sketchy. I own a pair of cheap chains that I pray I will never have to use. All you have to do is get some chains and make it snow in California. Thanks
It really depends on the vehicle and use. If your using a truck go with actual chains. If your driving a modern car with minimal wheel well clearance use tire wires or v blocks. They will no tear up your wheel wells. Chains are the strongest and work the best but require slowest speeds and moat clearance to not cause damage.
I have missed james and nolan breaking down which one they would buy with their own money on the subies. Keep that part at the end of each episode please!
I'd like to see a spin off of this series called built vs bought, 1 car gets to buy whatever, the other does proper research & builds or modifies mid to low range parts to be most efficient
i can't wait for the season finale, this is such a brilliant IDEA this should've been pitched to MTV as soon as PIMP my ride ended cause this feels like such a badass show for TV. and at the end you guys raffle the vehicles to one of your followers.. or sell it for charity. That would be great.
They don't know what they are doing I thought that was clear. They have spent enough money on motor replacements they could have iag long blocks in both the cars.
This whole series is a joke. The have no clue about anything Subaru and didn't even bother to find out. Picking cars with such a massive following and shitting all over the cars and owners is rather stupid.
Yeah from my experience swapping my 2.0 for a built 2.5 almost every option they have put on has been awkward/ wrong. I think the thing that has bugged me the most is even when they tried to break in a motor they only went for 500 miles. Straight from outfronts websight it recommends 5 oilchanges over 3000 miles.
My Dad used to have a coworker that went deer hunting every year. And whenever he was butchering a buck he would cut off the deer's scrotum, tan the hide, and use it as a shift knob cover. He said it was super soft and the only way to get a leather shift knob that didn't have any stitches in it. lol
High/low repairs and DIY projects. Imagine one team 3d printing parts and the other salvaging and DIY it in the best of their abilities. I'm thinking of using the OEM 350z gauges in the middle for my turbo IS200 build lol
Don't worry Nolan we will still love you no matter if you use or don't use the sketchy parts for Low Car. We would rather have you safe and continuing to make great content with the rest of Donut.
Hey guys, love your videos! This series would be more engaging if Low car had more time for research. Because that would be more reflective of a real world situation. That is, if you have a lot of money you can just buy top-of-the-line, but if you don’t have a lot of money, you have to spend your time figuring out what’s going to work best. So it makes sense for high car to only have five minutes. But it doesn’t make any sense for low car to have to figure out some piece of junk to buy in five minutes also.
I had that very same head unit, only I paid $22 for it. A few days after installing I got so frustrated by it that I drove back to my house, got my hammer and hammered it into a thousand pieces. It was Hammer time! 🔨
as a shift knob maker, I sometimes have to use universal-style adapters like that. You NEED to put lock tite on the set screw. I put instructions in my packages that tell you to apply thread locker. I will also say, it is an inherently bad design to only have 1 set screw. My adapters use 6 screws.
I had a 99 SF5 that was my hands down favorite car. Swap lots of parts from a WRX onto it, lots of suspension upgrades, stereo system. everything from the intake to the exhaust, even new rims someone took off their new STI. Mostly second hand parts from various Up Garages. Then had it wrapped. Had lots of fun driving it for the few years I owned it and multiple neighbors shaking their head at me for working on it in my parking spot. Good times.
I think you did the shift knob dirty, Raceseng has some of the best shift knobs in the business. It would've been better to have purchased a knob you actually liked from them instead of their most expensive option (the one they got is made of titanium which is why it's one of their more expensive options).
@@Raceseng I ordered your one of fifteen golden OrbTi for my future GR Corolla. Practical? No. Special? Very. Although like you said.... a Stratose Alcantara would have been a better option on a daily driver. Who knows, maybe I won't love the OrbTi like I loved my Spherology.
iIf you had upped the budget on that knockoff head unit to the 60-70 mark you could've got the non-european sized proper Double-DIN android auto units that function perfectly fine. I have one in my beater mk4 VW and its awesome. AA works every time, bluetooth sounds amazing and the call functions all work and sound alright. Has a 10 band equalizer also built in.
When it comes to picking a stereo, find several that have the most balanced hardware and software features you need and want. After finding at least a handful compare the specs like the OS(get Android 10 or higher since 9 is slower and less car friendly). For the hardware get the highest cores (usually 6-8 faster cores), RAM (at least 4GB), and memory (at least128GB or 64GB with expandable memory) offered especially since you don't want the lag and unresponsiveness from the equivalent of a cheap smartphone (usually 4 slower cores, 1-2GB slower RAM, and 32-64GB memory). Beware the cheaper stereos especially if they have any of the lower end specs I mentioned. There's a big used market for the cheap ones for a reason. My first one had great hardware specs but the software was terrible. Android 9 which took a little over a minute to boot up and was pretty slow and lagged enough to seriously annoy me while driving.
Yeah you’re totally right, I installed a head unit for a friend that was actually really similar or the same as the one in this video and it actually had Apple car play. It took some time to figure out but all you had to do was connect your phone into the usb and boom it worked. It was very laggy which made It just not worth it in my opinion. It doesn’t hurt to save a couple more hundred bucks to get something awesome.
or just buy an amplifier and a holder for your phone, no fiddling around with turning on hotspot on your phone to get the "headset" online then either. I wonder though if somebody has made some custom rom series for headset use for old phones. would extend the life, the amps in the cheap headsets suck anyway. even the dacs in the cheap headsets suck compared to higher end(even old) phones as far as noise and stuff like that goes(plus you could get an external dac or an external dac-amp and run that off usb of the phone). you could run samsungs in dex mode with extra screen too. a lot of the lag on them is just shitty software which is a shame really, there's no real excuse for modern even cheap as dirt hardware being slow to react other than bloated shitty code that's result of questionable "best practices" and not having the time and the devs and people managing the devs not giving a shit.
for those who didnt know, the cheap unit had that usb port on it which happens to be how you connect your phone to the carplay, although i am sure the unit was still very crappy. It may have been better than portrayed
As much as I like Hi/lo car series, this new way ain't it, 5k is what hi car spends on 1 item, now they're getting like 5 times the amount of lo car for like 5 different things and even made it more of a disadvantage for lo car because he didn't know what parts or the number of items they had to purchase. Still love the series, just maybe the old way is better imo
@@o_0imad0_o55 yeah, I thought of that after tbh, maybe this video just was made to get the interior out of the way. Let's hope lmao, imagine next episode they're like "hi car is gonna get 10k to do 5 huge performance parts, and lo car is gonna get 100$ for the same parts, let's goooo!"
I had that exact lo car head unit in my first car. It worked great - for about a month and then the entire touchscreen stopped working and it got a horrible high frequency buzz before dying entirely
I think the lesson here is if you’re really trying to save money sometimes leaving things stock is better than replacing it with cheap garbage.
At least when you have 5 minutes to make the decision on what youre buying.
Yea. I felt the exact same way. Kinda of makes me feel bad fornlow cat. Paying money to make it worse... Noone wants to watch them do that.

The knob that came from the sack looks like rainbow anodized hitch ball. ahahahahah, haha cough
5000 v 1000 would be the better option. 500 was too low, kinda unfair.
Makes for better content thoooo
YEAH I AGREE
To be fair this could be used as a public safety announcement to not skip out on quality parts on your car, i for one was shocked on just how bad those pedals looked.
TBH most people especially just starting out don't have 1k to upgrade stuff let alone interior stuff. Hell people buy max speeding rod coilovers for 400 and that's a more more important part of the chassis then lets say a head unit, or upgraded shift knob.
i think they should of done the smart thing with low car where they dont modify the part so stock parts to save money and just add wheel and gauges
Truly the only necessary mod was the gauges on a track car. The oem versions worked well enough that on a budget you really don't need to swap out the wheel, knob, pedals or radio.
Especially the pedals, stock WRX pedals are great
I think they could also better (if they wanted improved sound) go for a 2din so only text head unit, instead of an infotainment system.
Not only that, but neither of them got a wideband (a/f), which once again shows these boys are out of their territory.
worked well enough...don't need to swap out
Ah...that could be the mantra of my life.

The mid car should be the seasons money pit car, practical and (hopefully) reliable
They should have a specialist on the vehicle build the middle tier car that way you know it’s what people would actually do. I don’t know a single wrx owner with a Garrett turbo in it.
True, but now we're talking 3 WRX engine rebuilds per episode...
@@firstjohn26 if they had someone who actually knew Subarus or broke in their motor then you wouldn’t have 3 rebuilds an episode
@@nickg1511 it doesn't help that they keep letting people who don't know how to drive, drive these cars and bash em into the ground.
I feel like the time time limit placed on Nolan was responsible for alot of the wasted money
They should have given a $1000 limit for low car $200 a part seems reasonable.
Totally agree. Having a time limit is going to affect the lower budget shopper much harsher than a high budget. Also the fact that they used Ebay which is complete trash for this type of random item shopping. Ebay even made hi car look bad.
James's expression at 15:53 that is all
_when it's christmas but you have to wait for your little brother to open his gift before you can open another one._
represents the situation of the channel lately
@@daya1253 please explain for the class
You can’t be miserly under duress. Saving money requires time for research and patience waiting for sales.
Yeah that seemed like an unnecessary complication for this episode. Would have rather them spent more time researching and explaining what they were looking for than just "time attacking" the shopping.
Agreed, give a Nolan a list and a month. I bet he'd kill it.
EFI doesn't make more power than carbs. "upgrading" the brakes doesn't work. Points ignition is better for power. You've been lied to about the new shiny things. Buy Now!...These guys are cool but they have the American consumer virus.
Can't wait to see how somehow the new stereo will make the engine blow up again
This sounds like a joke but it’s a Subaru so it may actually happen somehow
I’d love to see a high vs low vs reasonable series.
you should've bought their old shiftknob for 5 dollars 😂
That was the best part, the best shift knob was already on high car lol. Figured low would of just snagged it.
I love how Nolan answers the correct question and james says noooo lmao I love the level of friendship on donut. Been a fan since day one it never gets old
I'm surprised Nolan didn't take the way out of leaving certain things stock. Sometimes the factory part is better than the cheap replacement
Things usually come with a Swatch of the material so you can test cleaning products on it to see if they're suitable
The suede swatch is useful to be able to test cleaning products for weird effects or getting other interior parts colour matched.
Screaming “$45 OMP pedals!” at Nolan the whole time he was pedal shopping.
Yes, I was going to make this exact comment! It’s not fair when low car can’t research to find the best accessories possible.
This episode should be called "How to throw away money if you are rich and stupid vs poor and stupid". Absolute waste of money. Don't be like this, do your research.
Yes they should know the 5 things and the budget then make a budget
you’re so right- the only way the poor can get a good deal is by taking copious amounts of time investigating for sales or cheaper alternatives with similar results and features.

Up until the turbo upgrade low car was doing really well for itself.
@@matthewdavis3898 agreed
Nolan for high car!
It would be a cool switch up tbh
The next series name: High Low Low High
Again, no. He’s already explained that he prefers lo car team as it more closely resembles how he would build his cars.
Yeah I'm sure he doesn't say that because James is his boss

Sponsored by Ebay motors that guarantees fitment.... pedals don't fit needs modification.... Love that.
I think Project Farm is more suited for that one!
As a Canadian, I will help James read the gauges
Thanks young Freddy!

The proper "low car" approach on the head unit would have been to buy a blanking plate for the dash and do a stereo delete for the weight savings.

i can't wait for the season finale, this is such a brilliant IDEA this should've been pitched to MTV as soon as PIMP my ride ended cause this feels like such a badass show for TV. and at the end you guys raffle the vehicles to one of your followers.. or sell it for charity. That would be great.
Still waiting on an AOS and Oil pickup/baffle supporting mod video for these cars...
They don't know what they are doing I thought that was clear. They have spent enough money on motor replacements they could have iag long blocks in both the cars.
It's crazy how far they are willing to push this stereotype. Instead of doing even an ounce of longevity research.

I bought that exact cheap head unit once, worked great for what I needed it for
I still have mine installed, haha. Had it for 2 years, keep meaning to change it out.
I got the same one😂 i only bought it so i could use my 12” sub. it lowkey sucks but im not picky
I have a similar one paid 40€ for it and almost 7 year later it still works and dose the job.

as a shift knob maker, I sometimes have to use universal-style adapters like that.

We 100% agree here. They should have got our Stratose alcantara shift knob! If they respond to this comment, we'll gladly send them one.

The feel of this wheel is unreal. You missed the perfect opportunity!
