    I was in the Navy for 22 years. I retired as a Chief Petty Officer in 1991. Like many others, I struggled to meet the Physical Fitness standards that the Navy set. I remember when this program really started in about 1982. It has really changed and it has really come a long way. How accurate or fair the program is will probably always be a subject to debate. The Navy has to have standards and the bottom line is readiness for the Navy to fulfill its mission and personal health which is such a great gift that is not given to everyone. I know there are cheaters out there, both the people who administer the program and command members. Integrity is a vital to the success of this program. One criticism that I have of this demonstration is that the people who are taking the measurements are not wearing gloves and are not sanitizing either the members or the measurement equipment. Is it to far fetched to think that germs might be transmitted by not taking some precautions?

    It would be nice to see a BCA demonstration video for correct BCA measurement for a female that has a larger booty. So many females are confused on what is actually a "hip measurement" because the "largest protrusion" from the rear end isn't necessarily in the hip location.

    I did bmi tests for wrestling in high school. When I was a junior so about 6 years ago my bmi at 5 foot 7 and 195 pounds was 21 percent. It was said the lightest I could go which would put me at 7% body fat was 171. So by that measurement I would be screwed

    Comments below who don't listen... height weight and tape together matter. Just because your BMI is high doesn't mean your body fat percentage is. Meet one and you're good

    When I was in the Army, we used the same tape test. One thing I've never been able to get a good answer for is: Why does the tape test include the neck?
    Really, what does the neck have to do with being overweight? I've seen soldiers who were on the edge get screwed because they had skinny necks. I've also seen soldiers (who you could look at and tell they were fat) pass the tape test because they had thick necks (which they worked out to game the system.)
    It seems that it would make more sense to measure the abdomen and chest. If your waist is a certain percentage larger than your chest, then your overweight. Simple. This would also prevent bodybuilders from having issues when they go to schools.
    I'd really like to get the reason the neck is included in the tape test.

      +pjamese3 I don't know why the neck is measured, but I'm trying to get in the military myself. I'm overweight and have been doing a lot of running, not just jogging but also sprinting, to try to shed inches from my waist. A few months ago, my waist was 40 inches now I got it down to 38 and I believe it was due to the sprints because long jogging doesn't work that well.
      However while I'm trying to shed inches from my waist, I've been paying some attention to my neck.
      You said " I've also seen soldiers (who you could look at and tell they were fat) pass the tape test because they had thick necks (which they worked out to game the system.)"
      I just bought a neck harness 2 months ago with some 25 pound plates, and I've been working my neck at least 3 times a week now since then. My neck was measured by my recruiter at 17 and a half inches, and it looks like I've gained at least a half an inch to 18 inches. I also have some cinderblocks and I like to do shrugs and farmers walks with them.
      I want to make my neck as big as possible or at least make sure it doesn't shrink because I have been told that a lot of people who lose weight tend to lose mass from their necks faster than they lose it from their waists, which would put you at risk for failing the tape test. So I definitely want to stay at 18 inches if possible, and really try to see if I can make it at least slightly bigger. I'm glad that there is kind of a loophole in the system and while the system of waist and neck is not fair, I'm trying to take advantage of it.
      I hope the army, if they won't get rid of the bodyfat system (and really, if you passed the physical fitness test, then why should they measure how "fat" you are? How many really fat people can pass the exercise tests?)
      at least update it. If they can't get rid of the tape measure, then at least add more leeway to it, like if the standards say you have to be "24% bodyfat" then at least raise it to "26%"

      The neck is measured because it tend to be one of the body areas that is least prone to fat build up. The navy bf test is essentially the correlation of the abdomen (where fat tends to go and is a good indicator) to the neck (where there is the least amount of fat).

      I think it's fair to say that bodyscans are the best way to tell bodyfat percentages and every test is more for a majority rather than being precise for everyone. A guy might have big legs but pass cause they don't measure the legs and all the examples you gave.

  • @ZFlyingVLover
    @ZFlyingVLover 8 років тому +8

    This is pathetic. ALL military branches should have the same physical requirements and have them based on either the marines or army whichever is harder. These requirments are easier than what's expected from kids for a presidential fitness award. Hell the kids PFA is equivalent to the max score of a marine PT!????
    Who cares about the BMI. What matters is the physical strength of the individual and passing a standard physical fitness test. Unless of course you're trying to get people to fit into standard uniforms which is stupid in and of itself.
    These are inane policies

    • @UltimateOlive
      @UltimateOlive 8 років тому +12

      Hahaha, talking like you know things... "Based on either the marines or army, whichever is harder." You have no idea what you're talking about! Haha, it's hilarious, actually. Yeah, we should definitely train all our Airmen and Sailors to be able to pump iron like our Marines and Soldiers, even though there are many Air Force and Navy jobs that basically boil down to being a desk job. You need to think before you comment some ridiculous shit, it would be a waste to expect some of the brightest young folk, who perhaps weren't very physical during school, to be as in shape as the dumb grunt boys who played football from middle school to their high school graduation. I guess by that logic, then every Marine infantryman should be as smart as a Navy nuke kid? Yeah, fat chance...

    • @mindcontrol31
      @mindcontrol31 7 років тому +3

      You have to look at what the military is working with the vast majority of young people in America are too fat or not in shape enough to be in the military. They cant do push ups and pull ups or run a mile without getting winded.
