Built 2.trellis' today... I used cedar lumber bought from Lowes. Total Lumber used: 4 x 4 - 8 foot length, qty 1 2 x4 - 8 foot length, qty 3 Coated Deck Screws, 1 box, 75 count. Tools: 10" Compound Miter Saw 20V Impact Driver Speed Square & Tape Measure Came out great, took about 90 minutes to make both, including measuring & cutting all the lumber... Highly recommend using deck screws with a Torx (star drive) head, less slipping and stripping heads. Using an impact driver makes it a lot easier too.
Richard just wanted to mention that you need to lower the speed of your drill to a slow speed for screwing and high speeds for drilling. Also try construction screws it uses a different head instead of a Philips screw bit. The bit is included with the screws. It will make the construction easier to put together too.
Hi Richard! I'm very interesting with your channel, I see you have the white plastic cover the pole 4×4 to prevent wet or damp from water, for dragon foot trills, they look very good to me. So where can I get them? Please tell me. Thanks.
Great ideas and so many helpful tips. I built our stands out of redwood since we are in Hawaii (rain & termites) and used outdoor deck screws and wood glue to strengthen joints. Thinking our setup might be close to UA-cam worthy! Cheers!!!
I just started making this type of Dragon Fruit trellis. Thanks for all the information and building tips. I'm using a 4" X 4" redwood post and 2" X 2" redwood lumber that I had left over from another project.
Thank you Richard for your details instructions, I'm ready to build 3 trellises using this version 2 since my HD in Louisiana does not sale the cinder block pier with zmax strap. I have shared your channel with my family & friends. You inspired us to grow our own dragon fruits. Thank you so very much!
Awesome videos for both the version1 and this version2 for the how-to on building the Dragon Fruit Trellis. The measurements provided are extremely helpful so I can have the HD guys to pre-cut it.
I love trellis. Your videos are very helpful. Would you please share and make a video for planting you dragon fruit into the pot with trellis and soil or the whole system of planting into the pot, trellis, soil, set up. Thank you for your knowledge in dragon fruit. Your plants look healthy. Please continue to make videos and Happy gardening.
Hi Red Electra, thank you for your kindness and for watching my channel. I appreciate your support. I will most definitely make a video regarding the content you have requested. Thank you very much for the suggestion! More videos will continue to come. Have a wonderful day!
Thank you, Tyler N! It’s very simple to do once you have all the dimensions cut out. If you have someone to help hold the wood it will get done even quicker. Pre-drilling the holes did make it easier and faster to fasten the screws on.
Pre-drilling the holes also prevents wood splitting...thumbs up! I also recommend using an Impact Driver with a brand new #2 bit on it to drive in the screws. Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee, and Ryobi are a few brands, local home depot or lowes. I have 11 dragonfruit started from seed but I'm in Seattle area, the growth is slow and must bring them in for winter, don't know if I'll ever see fruit but I will need these trellises one day, these things are actually growing up here lol...
Hi CitizenXRP, thank you so much for your tool tips! I can grow dragon fruits really well. But when it comes to building things with tools I am so lost! I appreciate the recommendations and will be doing some upgrading on my part. Have you ever thought of trying to graft the seedlings to increase the speed of their growth? If you look through my channel my very first video is me demonstrating on how to do that. Your seeds would literally grow 100x faster and you’ll have fruits within 2 years! If you Graft them they can also start withstanding harsh weather conditions.
Try using fish fertilizer or used ground coffee and grinded eggshell it speeds up the growing of plant and the production of fruit. another is NPK (Nitrogen Phosphorus and Potasse)
Thanks for the video. But one thing of note. In your description, you indicated 4 pcs of a 2x4 that's 6-7 inches long for the base. However, in your video, the lengths you used for your base is longer than 7 inches. For those that may read this comment, make sure to measure the inside diameter of the pot you're going to use. The 7" suggested base lengths will easily fit into a pot with a 12" inside diameter. A smaller diameter pot will not fit with these dimensions. If you use a larger pot, you may also want to use longer bases, just to give it a little more stability.
And there are things the two of you can do that can be harshly criticized as well. Not very nice, sad that people like you do nothing but rag on people..
Hello...i really admire your dragon fruit DIY tutorial...i kept watching your channel about dragon fruit...I have dragon fruit also and I am going to do the same thing when my husband made me a trellis.
If no Concrete Block.......👍👍 No problem ...just pour 1-2 bags of Premixed and Added water only without stirring after the Trellis put in the Container to grow for 8-10 hours to set. Then add the soil you choose
Dude, if you get an impact drill and torqs or star headed screws you will never go back. They go in so much easier with no slippage. They practically drive themselves in. It’s a revelation.
torx screws are expensive however, I think he'd probably be pretty happy with an impact and the right size phillips bit (I think he needed to flip around the double-sided one he had)
Your neighbors pomegranate tree is hanging into your yard, on one of the videos I seen them, wow those trees are large. Thanks for your tips on taking care of the dragon fruit.
Use your impact drill (the other drill that came with the set) for screws. The drill you are using is more for drilling pilot holes, or using paddle bits, hole saws, etc. that's why you are having a hard time setting in your screws. BTW great videos! Learned so much from you, I hope to have some sick plants like yours one day!
he might not have gotten his drill in a set, if he didn't though, I think it would be a worthy investment. much less frustration, and when you're enjoying the little things you end up making a much better product
That's actually quite genius. I would have never thought of that. I'll have to go watch part 1 to see what it's all about. I think you could have made things a lot easier for yourself by 1) using another middle pole to prop the ends of the smaller base up so it's steady instead of having Olivia try to hold it over open air and 2) elevate yourself on your step when drilling to top on. I just learned how to use the drill last year and I might have forgotten, but I think you needed more torque or whatever because you might be stripping your screws. I actually got a drill and a drill driver (impact drill). The drill is great for making holes for the screws while the driver driver is great for screwing in the screws.
Built six of these out of cedar. But for the bottom used these BuildTuff 4-in x 12-in x 12-in TuffBlock Polyolefin Plastic Deck Blocks. Fastened each to the bottom and sides of post using 2.5 inch wood screws. Seems very wind stable even outside the pot. About 8 dollars each at Lowes.
I really appreciate all of the Dragon fruit information you’re putting out I would like to share with you that your Phillips head screw bit is slipping and you would really like a star tip deck screw they are self cutting and they don’t slip thank you for everything you do
Great tutorial! I just cement in a 4x4 in a 15 gallon pot. About 5" of cement. Its heavy but much easier. The weight stops it from tipping over too! Just make sure you put it in its permanent home.
Bro i built that one and looks great. Now I need the pot u have. Please tell me the size of that pot. What number or gallons and where did u buy it? ty
Don't set to hammer. Hammer is for drilling into concrete. your drill has a dial that sets the torque and yours is set too low. As someone already said, set it to the picture of the screw.
👍👍👍, thanks for sharing. I’m afraid after few years the post will break..!!! When I planted the dragon fruits (in the ground) I put the post directly on the ground, I tied the plants around the post... after few years, the plants (dragon fruits tree) grew bigger.. now the post broke, I can’t put the new post in the middle since the branches collapsed... would you please give me ideas how to build the new post that will help for this case,, Thanks
I have learned much from these. Great job. I am concerned about plants being top heavy. Your pots are protected from wind. Mine will not be. I am in Florida and often have wind factors with summer daily storms. I think I will need to sink my pot into the ground about 6 inches to keep it more stable. I am then concerned about drainage if I do this. What are your thoughts ?
For your next wood project try using deck screws with torx head. You might not need to predrill. Also try to use an rechargeable impact driver. The Philips head bits easily destroy screw heads. So is that cedar wood? By the way nice design and video.
Grafting Dragon Fruit definitely going to be an improvement. Theoretically I couldn’t understand how it could stand but now that you show the 2x4s at the base it makes sense, simple but at the same time genius 🧠
If you use torx type( 6 point star) screws . they don't slip at the screw top, and will make your job much easier. You won't want to ever use anything else for your wood fastening projects. I'm a handyman and I live by those things!
Very good design, quite simple to make, I think you need some better screw driver bits the way it was slipping probably not as tight as they could be, Thanks for the video
Thank you Alan Murphy, you are absolutely right. I didn’t realize how cheap my driver bit were until I started to make the video. I had to re-secure it better after the video was made. Lol, now I understand what cheap tools are. 😅 Do you have experience with driver bits? What are some better ones I can get? Thank you for your feedback!
@@GraftingDragonFruit I've used lots of driver bits, not sure of your brands there as I live in Australia, general rule with any tools is looking for quality made not the cheap made in China tools we seem to get flooded with
Hey, thanks for the information and the nice video! I do want to say that your drill skills are a little lacking though; I don't mean to be rude, but the reason your bit keeps slipping is because it's not the right size for the screw, try finding a bit that fits the screw with no wiggle room, that doesn't slip out easily. The bits fall out usually because the drill chuck is JUST loose enough for it to slip out, I usually put the drill in reverse and without pulling the trigger, finish by hand tightening. Some drills like a Milwaukee have a chuck that locks by turning it counter clockwise until you feel a click, I don't know if there's others that do that. It helps to keep frustration down and work easy when you don't have to pulse the drill and it also keeps screws and bits from getting marred or totally ruined, so you pay less for hardware.
Also pre drilling avoids cracking the ends of the wood too. You should also run the drill into the other piece at least a half inch to guide the screw better, I use an impact driver to set screws, it also saves your bit as you hear it slipping, it's damaging the edges, way better then a drill driver, makes everything much easier. Don't know why he has his drill set for drilling holes instead of as a driver, sure he has two settings. Any way thanks for the design but I will use my own method of assemble, sure it will be easier then you make it look .
Thanks very much for the video. As a woodworker could I suggest you use a drill bit the same size or slightly larger than the shank of the screw into the first piece of wood so it doesn't bind. For the second piece use a drill bit slighlty smaller than the threads of the screw. This will ensure everything pulls in securely.
Hi Richard. Thank you so much for the videos! Advice?..I have a small patio and hope to plant a DF tree in a BIG clay pot with a trellis that supports a "trunk" that is 6' from top of soil to top support. That way the "branches" are above my patio space like a shade tree of sorts. Do you forsee any problems using such a tall trellis? Thank you!
@@GraftingDragonFruit yes...this is what I need too...cause I wanted to do this for so long but afraid not not how to use the riht soil etc..thank you a bunch!!
Richard I’m having a hard time finding 20 gallon pots. It seems no one at Home Depot or Lowe’s uses that terminology. Could you provide me the dimensions (HxWxD) of the pots that you use?
Hi there. This video was just what I was looking for in order to re-pot my dragonfruit. Quick question...What size black nursery pot are you using for this trellis? Also, do you by any chance have an affiliate link for where you purchased them so when I purchase them you can earn some money from the recommendation? Either way, thank you for sharing the info, it was very helpful.
I found pots similiar to this at my local hydroponics store. The price was reasonable compared to garden center prices. He uses a 25 gallon pot that is about 20 inches wide at the top. I have since learned on the Grafting Dragon Fruit Facebook page, and elsewhere that smaller pots can be used. There is another UA-cam video with a different base. He may have mentioned a few other tips in that video as well. I was directed to buy a non-toxic wood treatment to help the wood last longer. I am in no way an expert, but I hope this helped some.
Thanks for this demo, now i have to make my own trellis which i did not have yet for 3 years now. This one can help arrange my df plants and save space. How long will this trellis last? Do u think it will last for 3 years or more, then you'll have to rebuild a new one?
Built 2.trellis' today... I used cedar lumber bought from Lowes. Total Lumber used:
4 x 4 - 8 foot length, qty 1
2 x4 - 8 foot length, qty 3
Coated Deck Screws, 1 box, 75 count.

10" Compound Miter Saw
20V Impact Driver
Speed Square & Tape Measure
Came out great, took about 90 minutes to make both, including measuring & cutting all the lumber... Highly recommend using deck screws with a Torx (star drive) head, less slipping and stripping heads. Using an impact driver makes it a lot easier too.

Thank you so much, this is awesome 👍
As a carpenter you make a really good gardener. That screwing was painful to watch.
