How many branches should your Dragon Fruit Plant Have?

Today we are taking a closer look at dragon fruit branches and how many they should have when the plant is young. The technique I use is to limit the main trunk to having 5 branches above the trellis and then limit those branches to having 3 branches each. Once the primary branches get close to 36 inches long, I usually tip them. This promotes secondary branch (or bud, depending on the season) formation

Hmmm, bought a 1 gallon plant a year ago. It isn't growing up, but hangs down with several branches from the poor pot. Is there any hope of getting fruit that way? I cannot image putting it in the ground the way it is now. Would appreciate a bit of help...

So, odds are it needs to be repotted into a bigger container with rich soil that contains compost and sand for drainage. Once you repot the plant, I would trim off all of the branches and only leave one. Then put a stake in the pot and tie that branch to the stake. You want 1 main trunk to grow up. Eventually (when it gets big enough) you'll create a trellis for it and let it continue to grow. When the soil seems dry to the touch, give it a water.
