Just planted almost a dozen cuttings following your advice. Fingers crossed I get some growth. In California but not close to ocean so extremely hot these days. I used cuttings from a plant that I’ve had for awhile but I had no clue about all of the rules to grow and get flowers. Thank you for your videos.
Thanks! I didn't know they couldn't go in the sun at first, put in shade, got it. Good to know not to bury the root deeper than the root area and not cover much of the flesh (another youtuber said to put it 3" down in soil, YIKES!). I wouldn't have known, so I watched your video. Your dragon fruit look so healthy and happy!
I follow the exact same steps as above. Having said that, when I've bought commercially grown, potted up, plants at garden centers I have pulled them apart (in the interests of scientific discovery) and seen that they do, indeed, place them a few inches into the soil. So, there seems to be more to the story, but I'm not sure what it is. Having said that, I'll keep following the technique in this video as it is logical and works for me.
This is the motivation i need, thanks. my dragon fruit is 5 years old. It has never bore fruit. Well, I didnt take care of it. I put it under a shade with no Stand at all... I seem like it rotting now.., so I’ll cut all the remaining branches and do what you are doing on this video...
I was amazed when you mentioned Tabo. Tabo is a filipino word for dipper. Nice tutorial for growing dragon fruits in a container. Im really thinking of planting that way.
@@johnrespect4215 this is old, but just got to the part where he distinctly says *tabo*, not tub and wanted to set that record straight. He even mentions that he "finally found out what it was called", which would be odd, not least of all because the thing he's referring to is not a tub
thank you, i am now interested to plant the dragon fruit cuttings that my friend gave me, i was inspired by your knowledge, thank you for sharing God bless
Hi Mavis Ngo, thank you for watching my videos. Im glad you're enjoying and learning from them! It makes me very happy that you want to see more. I will do my best to continue!
I cut back to the main cambian layer and used rooting hormone right away and had very large root bunch result. My scabbed cuttings took a bit longer and had roots only out bottom rim of inner cambian layer. Great vids! I think rot is mostly in the outer leaf flesh surrounding inner tube.
I don't fully expect a response from this but I'll try If you put rooting hormone on the fresh cuttings was it still able to callus or did you not wait and just plant them right away?
Is it getting too cold to grow from cuttings now in So CAL, or wait for spring? What will be good months? How often do you water? Some people recommend cutting 1-2 inches off the bottom, dry them for a week, and to give more surface for root to grow.
I'v been trying to plant this in my garden for quiet a long time now but ended up in total failure - well, just managed to harvest one fruit ie. But, i'm not throwing the towel just yet, infact im trying to plant a few cuttings now so fingers crossed. And, thank you very much for the tips...
Hi Richard. New subscriber here. Glad I found your channel and starting to plant my own Dragon fruit. Live in the midwest so plants has to be move indoors during winter. Thanks for your honest reviews.
Very helpful video Richard. Question:I live in Arizona, its blazen🌞 hot in the summer 103°-115° it gets cold 🥶 in the winter doesn't snow here. How often should I water my cuttings, whether I decide to plant them in the summer or winter?
Hello .I am you're subsciber since i also plant dragon fruit.I thought all the while that your ethnicity is vietnamese until i heard "tabo".thank u for imparting your knowledge.
Richard, when are you going to publish a book in DF? Question, does the DF get nurishment from the air roots if you wet them with the H2O/ fertilizer mix that you feed the plant with. My trellises are 4in square pvc wraped with burlap, the plants love it, they root up and grow fast. I started with four trellises back in OCT, i am starting on my 14th this week.
Thank you for this content. I was given a dragon fruit plant that needs serious rehabilitation. It is scarred and yellowing and was tied to a stick for so long the tie cut into the branch a bit. After seeing this video I think I will take some healthy pieces off this unhealthy looking plant and try to root them just in case the plant itself dies. I find that sometimes taking care of a dying plant seems to hasten it's death. Maybe I can still salvage a cutting or two.
You're very welcome! It's okay, you can cut the portion off thats rotting and let it dry completely before planting it again, and it will root and grow perfectly fine!
okay finally found the video... this is for the beginners... though my dragon fruit is six years old. it never grew big. its base is already rotting. So I need to chop off all the green branches and just do what you do in the video.
I just bought cuttings online. The bad thing I did, I cut the end cause its dry.. So Im gonna wait another week to have it dried before planting it. Thanks to you, I didn't plant it right away, will wonder why its rotting.
Hi Richard, If u don't reply I know your so busy i understand 😊 and because of you inspired me that I have planted so many dragon fruit trees from seed in my cold London flat 😆 most of plants are 14"-16" inches tall now nd my question is when do I start cutting them for rooting ? please someone tell me, I couldn't find any videos on that ..
Hi Richard iv just recently purchased some cuttings an American beauty and a yellow dragon fruit both are self pollinating varieties, am trying to root them, i just potted them both in moist coco coir in a clear cup, American beauty has rooted but yellow hasent yet, also when the cutting starts producing extra shoots am gonna try and graft it on my two seedlings plant I got to make it into a bonsai plant hopefully doing it in UK 🤗
Thank you so much Richard for sharing the dragon fruit propagrating method. I found your way similar to the method that I have watched on the other channel. She also keeps the last end of the cutting and a bamboo stick to hold the propagating firmly. Do you know how long it’s gonna root?
My dragon fruit is just all these 3-4 inch long growths. I didn't know what it wanted. I'm afraid my cuttings won't get big or strong enough but I think even if it's awkward I'll get a larger plant to get trained up. I'm in the north so I hope once I get my grow lights out I can get into this.
Hi there just got a few cuttings. Could I use Kellogg fish & kelp into my water in small ratio for added nutrients? Using their potting soil with cactus soil mixed in 2 parts cactus to 1 part all natural garden soil. Thanks!
From my experience, once rooted, these things are bulletproof. I’d give it a month or two to root. Pull it out and stick it wherever. I have so many dragonfruit I have to give them away
I water my newly rooted plants twice a week. Before they root, I try to keep a bowl at the bottom full of water to keep the soil moist. Moist but not wet, it’s a little tricky but they root quickly!
Thanks for sharing! I'm just wondering: how often do you water them until you can put them out in the sun? Or Is it just the first watering? Once they're in the sun, how often should you water and fertilize them? And what kind of fertilizer do you recommend? Thanks again!
Awesome Video, at what point you transfer on to the bigger pot with a Trellis or can you just plant directly on to the bigger pot an skip the small pot??👍Thanks for sharing 👍👍
Thank you, you can transfer them into bigger pots as soon as you see a new growth comes out. I would let the shoot grow 1 inch before planting them into the bigger pots. You definitely can plant them into bigger pots right off the back, but... that just means you need to water that bigger pot with more water to have the soil moist. I prefer to grow them in small pots, save some water, and when the roots are nice, healthy, and big then that's when I would transfer them into a bigger pot. They will be more ready to spread their roots to make them selves feel at home in their new area. Hope this helps!
Hi Richard, When cutting from the main plant do you recommend adding organic cinnamon to the main plant and the cutting? I'm asking because in one of your other videos you mentioned rubbing organic cinnamon when cutting dragon fruit to prevent pests
Thank you for the video. I’m new in growing dragon fruit and like how you organize your plants. Can you share how big are the pots behind you and the measurement of the square you built for the pot please?
You're very welcome! Here's a link to my video on how to make the trellis support. Look into my description for the measurements. The pots I use are 20 gallon in size.
Hello Richard, I really appreciate your video on how to grow the dragon fruit plants. I am new at this however,, I did plant dragon fruit cuttings 3 years ago, but they never yielded any fruit. Now I know the plant needs early sunlight as well as pruning. Could you help me on uprooting it and transplanting it out in the sun? Is growing amongst my trees about 12 feet tall. Again I really enjoy your knowledge on this matter. Sonja in SoCal.
This is So new to me.... My D.F. plant is 1 yr old, in 2 weeks. Some fingers are 12" long and very thick. I repotted it today, the entire plant. There are 18 'fingers' in a 12" pot. Lots of room in there. I used Miracle Gro and it's Healthy! It has soft but sharp thorns at every ripple. Do I have to replant Each finger in its own pot? And When? When do the thorns fall off? Only 1 of my fingers has a double plant (like a tiny waistline, another growing on top. A Double decker). Your site is Very Informative so I Subscribed to you...
