I'm a handyman/painter in Sarasota, Fl. This is great, as usual. I have great clients who are not feeling the pinch of the economy. Working for people that I have known for 15-20 years who are painting rooms just to change the color. It's a nice gig. At 49, I could not have imagined that we would be making the wage that we are now, adjusted for inflation. It's great and if you can keep your body in shape, it can be done well past 60.
Excellent advice Jeff. I a week ago I called a painter for a quote. I took off work early so I was home 30 min before the appointment. The time he was supposed to be there he called and I'm 30 minutes late. Fine (not really). 45 minutes later I texted him and said, "Don't waste your time, I don't trust you to show up on time I'm not giving you my business,' Ten minutes later he showed up!! I wish young people would learn, that you show up early, are respectful, with a smile on your face, and 100% of the time you'd probably get the job.
Jeff, well done and right to the solution after you state the issue. I come here just to hear what is new and what is not so new as there is always something to learn or to reinforce. Thanks for all you do.

Nope. If i say ill be there at 8:30 thats when ill be there. If im early they might be in the shower or not fully ready. If theyre going to hold it against me that I wasnt early, Im not too worried. They need me more than I need them. The customer is not your boss- you are offering them a service that they cannot perform. If they could do it they would. I do like and agree with the part about limiting your liability because yes, some customers are crazy and some will actually try and get you to pay for something that was already broke beforehand. For every snake contractor, theres about ten snakey homeowners out there.

Hey Jeff. At 62, I’m finally finding the time in retirement to rediscover the joy of DIY! In process, I have 2 friends asking me to “work my new-found magic” at their house, since they can’t get Handmen/women to return calls. This is sort of starting to beg the question of what DIY stuff might a 60’s guy consider as poss occasional gig work, and which ones should probably be avoided? (…or, is the age factor probably making this a laughable question in and of itself?!)
I’m 64, I do tree work. Legit. Just be careful. No sudden moves. And know what’s happening, before it happens. Never , ever hurry, especially to impress someone who might be watching.
Hi Tony. Age is just a number. Your ability to work is the only question. I like the pressure washing gig since the machine does the work. no ladders and great money. Cheers!
I had a neighbor sell his house , he painted the outside before sold looked great but after one storm and new owners around six months later i saw it peeling off the brick and wood siding , my other neighbor says just crappy work , I say Latex over oil paint . ?
You don’t paint brick period. You stain it, Limewash or use a masonry paint. Latex will never adhere to brick because it’s porous and expands/contracts as the weather changes
Hey (this came up while I was listening to you) So…. If I were to coat all the 2x4’s I’m forced to leave outside (& it’s about to start raining) if I coat them with oil based polyurethane…. Can I protect them from warping & wearing & taring? (I happen to have got a good deal on a bunch of cans of oil base poly months back at Home Depot discount paint section)$2 a can But ya, should I coAt the lumber I’m forced to store outside with that stuff? I’d love to get your insight
If you're talking about using the lumber for an outdoor project (like a deck), it will not last because the polyurethane is not likely to be UV resistant. It will first cloud up, then some of it will separate from the wood and chip off. Even spar or marine-grade polyurethanes have their limits, especially on horizontal surfaces exposed to sunlight and rain. If you're talking about just storing the lumber outside for a while, you are better off using a tarp because that will let the wood breathe. Sealing up the wood with poly will lock in the moisture, and that may be a bad thing when a hard freeze comes along.
Unfortunately in California as per many US states, if you do a job over $500 including material and Labour you are breaking the law without a trade licence
From experience staining decks: Make absolutely sure you know what is underneath the deck before you start applying stain onto the deck boards… If there are gaps between the wood and there's a beautiful set of patio furniture underneath, you may drip penetrating stain with colorant all over the patio furniture and the deck below, and it will be your fault. Use plastic or drop cloths below the deck if there is something valuable underneath.
Or the obligatory, not responsible for damage to anything under the deck including furniture, lawn equipment, plants, pets, etc. Again, the owner is responsible for site prep before work begins. In addition, be smart about it, and look under there when quoting the job, then advise the client accordingly.
It’s funny that I stumbled across this video because I have a company here doing my windows. They came one day didn’t show for 2 days bcs a guy was ill but never informed me then pop up at 740 when I was leaving out to take my kids to school.. I asked who’s responsible for letting us know when they would and wouldn’t be working lol then when they left for the day they left shims in my window sticking out knowing I have a 2 yr old (4kids all together) also no indoor shoes I had to request that they leave to go get some because it was pouring out 🤦♀️ so unprofessional-
I'm wondering if I would be able to do this around a Monday to Friday 9 to 5 job. Would people be ok with you showing up after 5pm to do some painting, or is it mainly a day time thing only?
Some jobs may work, some people have vacant houses/condos/apartments that you can do after hours. I think your best bet is to do weekends though, if you show up at 5 you'll be tired and sloppy probably
Ask the customer. I’ve had customers who prefer me work while they are home, sometimes they like it when you work while they are away. And lots of my customers don’t mind me working on the weekend. Also there’s night painting. You paint at night for business that are open during the day.
Kilz (the original) and BIN shellac based primer. I prefer the BIN because the shellac flashes off fast, has excellent sanding, and can be painted quickly.
I actually have someone of that generation who always runs late. He says he'll stop by on the weekend and never does. Wears his shoes in my no shoe home... Oh yes, he can't hear, nor try to listen, I write things down to communicate and he talks back so loud I have to plug my ears... omg. $45/hr.
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY yeah, but my point is that if a person has skills, that does count for a lot! :) Also, I've called a few others and they don't follow up. Showing up also counts for a lot. This is another reason I'm an avid viewer of your channel, I gotta get stuff done! lol
Really depends on you location. In my area Nobody works for anything close to $30 per hour, well maybe a day laborer that a contractor hired, but the client is paying 2x to 4x that.
A painter can make up to $30 as an employee. Self employed charge $2-4/sqft for walls, ceiling, and trim. Hire a buddy for $16.00/hr and paint a house in 2 days. That’s easily $50.00/hr minimum if you have jobs lined up.
One thing I’ve learned the hard way is, if you give really good service, people will think that you are desperate for work. It’s a fine balancing act .
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY naw, I’m 64, been Self-Employed 39 years. By good services, I mean being accommodating, going the extra mile , being open with information etc, etc.
People should also be made aware of the tax burden of working for yourself. Here in the USA it's almost 40% federal and if your unlucky enough to live in a state that taxes income that's almost another 10%. All together that's almost 50% of all the income you make! Yep, litterly half of everything you earn! I bet you the average person who works for someone else would stop saying high income earners don't pay enough taxes if half their paycheck was taken by the government!
Not to be rude but your n umbers and understanding is completely off. Corporate tax rates are 21% federal. Side hustles do not require you to start a corporation. all small businesses get to write off all expenses that pertain to running sa business so you only get taxed personally on the balance. that means a free truck to drive free gas free insurance and a free phone. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Your are correct! When im wrong im not to proud to admit it. As a single earner your right. I was basing my figures as making $260,000 a year using your $1000 dollar a day reference(5000 a week x 52) not as a "handy man" with zero employees . The deductions are nice! Especially the 2 hour business seminars that are conveniently held at resorts in Orlando minutes away from Disneyland so one can deduct traveling expenses while on vacation. Lol! Just curious though, what is the tax rate in Canada for a handy man??
The amount of roofers and thatchers you see that are in their 60's70's is unbelievable hardly ever see any in their teens 20's why cause people are sensible these days they don't want to risk their lives and do hard work for crap money and pay higher insurance for the privilege
big fan of your channel but i have to disagree with you on this title not as easy as you make it sound like but it was good content to kill some time lol i been painting for 10 years and the past few years i had to quit painting and get into flooring because there is no money in painting
There's definitely money in painting but for sure not with the general population. You gotta break into a certain market I find the profitable paint jobs will come from real estate agents, property management companies and wealthy home owners. I agree if you hand out flyers most people that call you will probably be cheap and you'll make nothing
So, i'm not the only one looking up and thinking............nope. Last time i fell.......it dit hurt for two weeks. Well ..fell...its more like crashing. Nothing athletic like it was, just like a sack off potato's. Bang. The burden of being over 50 Jeff. I know. Always a suprise witch knee hurts when you get up, right?
Why is it everyone I know and have met 50-55 look so old and I'm 58 look 30 years old. What are y'all doing wrong in life. I HAVE LEARNED A LOT FROM YOU THO🤭🤣🤔
I simply chose to age gracefully and spend all that time it takes to stay young with my family instead of a bunch of sweaty guys at the gym. Cheers! How old you are is all about how you feel on the inside. and for me that is 25. Cheers!
Nah bro. I do kitchen brick and fireplace stain & Limewash. charge $1000 project minimum. Takes me 4-6 hours to finish. $1000-$1500 a job. Issue is getting enough customers because I only book a couple a month
stop pushing inexperienced worker to ruin the market. The only way to learn real skill is to work for someone good and learn from him or her. Not watching UA-cam. You never know how many points you're missing because he doesn't show you.
stop your complaining. I have seen the quality of the work done by my members and it is better than professionals I have hired in the past. My videos are all you need to be a pro. Cheers!
Wish I was 30-40 years younger. This is great advice for a young buck. Like you, I have fallen off a ladder. Spent 3 weeks on crutches due to a sprained ankle. Ladders are now off limits thanks to Mama’s rules. lol
Painting companions pay painters 15 to 25 per hour per employee. Average. You won't see painting companies go above 30 because the Bottom line is painters make less today than 24 years ago. I made 23 an hour 20 years ago and a house cost 160 k in California. Now a painter makes the same 23 an hour and that same house is 1000000. Rents have tripled since then. The days of affordable housing on today's wages is a travisty in America. Rich are getting greedier and the working class are slaves.

Got me through my projects. Thanks
Cheers Terry happy to help!
Unfortunately in California as per many US states, if you do a job over $500 including material and Labour you are breaking the law without a trade licence
no problem. simply set up an invoice per room for $500. it is that easy. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY The bastads set up stings here for that very thing. Crazy
@@teddysthaiadventure2534 wow that sucks, they got nothing better to do
Do you believe some "thing" called government has a right to interfere with your right to contract with your fellow man? I do not.
Like most laws in California, BS!
Use plastic or drop cloths below the deck if there is something valuable underneath.
great advice
Or the obligatory, not responsible for damage to anything under the deck including furniture, lawn equipment, plants, pets, etc. Again, the owner is responsible for site prep before work begins. In addition, be smart about it, and look under there when quoting the job, then advise the client accordingly.
Love these side hustle tips of yours, man. Very timely! Keep 'em coming. Cheers!
It’s funny that I stumbled across this video because I have a company here doing my windows. They came one day didn’t show for 2 days bcs a guy was ill but never informed me then pop up at 740 when I was leaving out to take my kids to school.. I asked who’s responsible for letting us know when they would and wouldn’t be working lol then when they left for the day they left shims in my window sticking out knowing I have a 2 yr old (4kids all together) also no indoor shoes I had to request that they leave to go get some because it was pouring out 🤦♀️ so unprofessional-
That's insane.
I'm wondering if I would be able to do this around a Monday to Friday 9 to 5 job. Would people be ok with you showing up after 5pm to do some painting, or is it mainly a day time thing only?
That all depends on the client. but right now there is such a shortage. I think it could work.
Where do I find "C2 guard" stain you mentioned in this video? Thank you 🙂
Check the video description for online delivery in the U.S. or google C2 paint stores near you!
$300 a room what's the sq footage and with paint included?
never with paint included. and I am talking a 10 x 12 bedroom.

Which product do you use to make sure it's not going to flash for mud and priming? Is it Sheetrock 45 and a spray primer he mentioned?
killz! Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY thank you
Kilz (the original) and BIN shellac based primer. I prefer the BIN because the shellac flashes off fast, has excellent sanding, and can be painted quickly.

How long should it take....
paint one interior room, including letting the 1st coat dry?
I would suggest 3 to 4 hours tops if you are doing minor repairs as well. Cheers!
The better you get the faster it goes. I can do a standard bedroom start to finish 2 coats in 90 min
right!

Once I can learn to paint that quickly.... I'd be a fool not to start my own business!!!!! lol
What about insurance?
I actually have someone of that generation who always runs late. He says he'll stop by on the weekend and never does. Wears his shoes in my no shoe home... Oh yes, he can't hear, nor try to listen, I write things down to communicate and he talks back so loud I have to plug my ears... omg. $45/hr.
Ouch. slim pickins I guess Eh!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY yeah, but my point is that if a person has skills, that does count for a lot! :) Also, I've called a few others and they don't follow up. Showing up also counts for a lot. This is another reason I'm an avid viewer of your channel, I gotta get stuff done! lol
Jeez after years of watching you I just realized you talk just like red green
LOL, Guilty. watched that show and Smith and Smith like a groupie growing up.
How is that possible? Painters make $30/hour tops.
yeah, when working for someone else.
Really depends on you location. In my area Nobody works for anything close to $30 per hour, well maybe a day laborer that a contractor hired, but the client is paying 2x to 4x that.
Most employees make half what the boss is charging. That is why side hustles are so profitable. now you are the boss. Cheers!
A painter can make up to $30 as an employee. Self employed charge $2-4/sqft for walls, ceiling, and trim. Hire a buddy for $16.00/hr and paint a house in 2 days.
That’s easily $50.00/hr minimum if you have jobs lined up.
30 an hour if you suck
Every painter I know (a decent amount) is a raging alcoholic.
One thing I’ve learned the hard way is, if you give really good service, people will think that you are desperate for work. It’s a fine balancing act .
Service is different than doing things for free. Cheers!
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY naw, I’m 64, been Self-Employed 39 years. By good services, I mean being accommodating, going the extra mile , being open with information etc, etc.
it dont work! stain wood or seal it clear. no paint motto for sure
Be early...yes

I agree if you hand out flyers most people that call you will probably be cheap and you'll make nothing
there is money in everything. You just need to be in the right market to get paid. Cheers!
