Yup rules and regulations can be a bear if you ignore them. Glad that you guys are going to have a chance to do things correctly and not under the radar.
I have a small home improvement company that I started a couple of years ago. Due to the demand in my area, we have shifted a majority of our focus on painting. I have been watching your videos for months and have to say they have helped me a lot. Thank you!!!
Been watching your videos for about a year now every since i started my maintenance business here in Florida and we've been catering more to painting now and ive learned to love it and your channel is giving me key information and the scriptures you post let me know that we are brothers keep being a blessing brother we started by faith and we'll continue by faith God is good
I've been self employed for 15 years now been doing my thing for 7 of those and started spraying 3 years ago and your channel and vids have been gold for me man..form Bournemouth u.k
I'm 6 months in. In the Denver area at least, this is a great time for hardworking, knowledgeable people to start contacting businesses. Unfortunately there seems to be a shortage of quality, honest contractors these days. I've had clients tell me they don't even care to see my insurance because I showed up and that's good enough. I put one ad on craigslist months ago when I started and the phone doesn't stop ringing. Saving up for your bid package ;)
Brother Im in Savannah Georgia I have to say as a fellow Business owner and Painter I have to say that I absolutely appreciate your videos and love what it is you do . Blessings to you my friend.
Painter life you guys are legit and honest and noligbale I'm a painter 8 years of painting and I truly love it . But you guys are real and great great painters
Yes you should! Your videos help so many of us young guys out please keep them coming they are incredible. PS, you have got to be the coolest boss I've ever seen. You really love your Job and what you do and it shine's through your dedication to your team and customers, if i could i would love to learn anything and everything i could from you but im in Montana so i just watch every video i can of yours! I came out here to help my sick Father, i stubbled across a job painting but honestly didn't care about it at the time. That changed when i got interested, then i fell in love with what i do but unfortunately my boss likes us to kinda figure things out on our own! So please keep teaching me all that you can cause im very hungry to learn it all if you know what i mean! Your an incredible man, incredible brother and an incredible teacher! Keep up the great work
Not gonna lie man I really appreciate these videos. Your journey is similar to mine being in the mud starting off and I am in the process of getting contract work. It's interesting to see that only a few tools can gain you so much freedom in doing independent business.
Chris buddy, very informative, useful information. I currently run a small paint business and I agree with everything you say in this video. Great job. Definitely interested in your academy.
Hey buddy just wonderin do you make enough to live off of with the paint business? I know its kind of a personal question so you dont gotta answer but im just curious since this is what i wanna do for a living
Chris You may think that some of your subject matter is too basic but I really appreciate the time you take and the level of detail you go to on most of your videos. Thanks.
You are a wealth of information. I was a roofer for many years. Wife and I moved from the Metro Detroit area to here in northern Michigan about 18 months ago. Started a handyman service. I do quality work at good prices. Networked with the correct people and by the grace of God met a few people with good reputation and excellent track records. This is a tourist ski town. Multimillion-dollar homes as well as many rental homes. Many of the owners only come up a couple times a year. I've really made a name for myself up here, always send pictures of completed work and am old enough to know your reputation is everything. Sometimes my customers don't even ask the price, I just bill them upon completion. So far, no complaints whatsoever. Been getting a s*** ton of painting jobs recently. Last week I did a living room + 3 hallways. I quoted the owner 1500 bucks. He just happened to be coming up the day I finished. Wrote me a check for two thousand and thanked me. I honestly don't have a clue how to quote paint jobs. I have another one this week in a 1.5 million dollar home. Got a call today to paint five bedrooms in a home right down the street from that, very similar home. The five-bedroom job, lady wants to go from walls with color to all white. No trim No Ceilings. I honestly don't even know how to bid it. I'm thinking 3500 maybe 4,000, I really don't have a clue. I do know one thing, I'll keep working hard and I always do a good job. Your videos are seriously going to help me up my game. Not thank you enough for your time and effort making these videos.
Nice I'm a roofer myself. I love it but I'm thinking of old age and the hassle of running a roofing company with employees or just accepting the scraps boss is willing to give.
I'm very happy to find your videos. I'm in the process of learning how to paint well enough to open a business. I've learned a lot from you so far. Thanks a bunch, I appreciate you man!
Love your videos man! I appreciate what you do and how you are giving back to the craft and helping people coming up. I live in CA and it is horrible for someone coming up and trying to make it in this field. I have been researching the requirements to sit for my paint and decorator license and it is almost impossible to make a career lateral move since I would have to step down to apprentice level (income wise) so that I can eventually be able to meet the requirements to sit for my exam and license. But I appreciate all the advice and tips you give.
Hey Alex, would you like to get qualified 25 appointments on autopilot, from now on you don't have to waste your time on door knocking or cold calling, would you like to know how?
Thanks so much for your videos. I've learned alot from you. I have an established business and never give anyone a price on the spot. It leaves the client thinking. Anyway thanks again you've help me alot. Peace
I would say California is more difficult to obtain a contracting license then most states. Having paperwork filled out by your old boss stating your a journeyman is one, also going to contracting school is highly recommended, you learn the test which is two parts, law, and the other is trade. You also have to get a background check through the government, felon's cannot obtain a California contractors license. Setting up your business with a tax I.D # and business account with the bank also is recommended. after you pass make sure you get your bonding and insurance in order. I went through the contractor process in 2007 which is a interesting rollercoaster.
Yup. Sounds about right. I got my C-33 (painting and decorating) contractor license 3 years ago here in CALIFORNIA. Went through the same process. The whole thing cost me about $1500. That’s for contractor school, background check, state exam and all the paperwork and various fees.
@@zseven1419 the test wasn’t that hard. All the questions had multiple choice answers. The 16 hour crash course at the contractors school helped me tremendously. I went to the school Saturday and Sunday. Monday morning I went to the license board and took the test while all the info was still fresh in my mind. The only questions I had difficulty with were about wallpaper. I’ve never done wall paper.
Thanks IP for your tips. I consider you and your UA-cam channel a personal contact of mine. I've been doing carpintry work (cabinets countertops) for about 20 years now and I really appreciate the pointers you give on paint lifeing because I need it. KEEP IT UP BROTHER! I’m glad I found your page! I’ve been wanting to start a hands on side business, and I really enjoy painting and minor drywall repairs. I’ve been getting a lot of practice in my own house! Quite a few cracks and stains.
ive been thinking about starting up a painting company i painted for 8 years on and off with my dad at first and then for other companys i have a older graco ultimate 1095 sprayer that was my dads that he gave me that runs perfect and an 8ft and 6ft step ladder and a 16 foot exstention ladder too. and i have all the handtools id ever need for the most part including drop cloths and everything i just dont know where or how to actually find the work to do and i dont have much knoledge in finding the jobs and putting my name out there which i feel like is the hardest part to getting started
Why "couple years"? Get your butt up and start your business man so you can make tons more than $16.00/hr. That's more like $11.00 after bills mind as well hit up McDonalds for $12.15 as a fry cooker :-) lol... seriously man why wait? Start your business NOW
It's takes alot more than you think ...the experience with materials, products is needed in a wide range. Also knowing what to take on and what not too is also a big thing. Proper competitive pricing is also a factor ...there is alot man but stay motivated I've only been painting for 4 years and I only have the true confidence I need now to take on bigger jobs..on the side I mean.
I'm a painter and decorator from Scotland with 30 years experience, that sounds like a great idea, before a price or "bid" as you guys call it is over $500 think that works out over here about £400, you will require a painting and decorating licence.
I have few questions. The idea of starting my own painting biz started two years ago. I got my EIN # and started the paper work. My application gas been accepted in my county and now I'm studying for the first of two tests I must take. 1. Question: How do I hire workers? I can not at this time offer a 9 to 5, 40 hours a week job. I have worked under 1099 for others but how do I find people who are not looking for the 40 hour a week job? I know when people agencies that look to get people employment and even carry"insure" their workers. Is this a a road to travel? 2. For starting out, I probably can't afford a payroll company so how do I pay my workers? Should it be a check from my business account or is Zelle connected to that account a good idea? 3. My thought is, when hiring someone I should have a hand out of what is expected, how I will deal with lateness, theft and other issues. What are some pitfalls with that? 4. How to avoid and handle jobs that didn't do well due to under bidding or unforeseen events such as, I got three workers working on a house and the owner dies. Now I didn't make enough to pay those workers?
Good info Chris. Cali license has two parr’s. Law and trade, you must get I think it’s 73% of the questions correct. Best way to pass is go to a school, they will get you through it. Then you must be bonded. And of course lead cert now.. All the best
Me encantan tus videos compadre! ! Así es como se deben de hacer las cosas , bien hechas o mejor no hacerlas , salúdame en tu próximo vídeo te veo desde CD Juárez chihuahua México, i will work paint 10 years in San Diego and i know how Do it , you guys doit perfect! 😎👍
I've been painting and drywalling for over 22 years, I was out on my own from 05-08, I was licensed and bonded and insured but I wasn't disciplined enough during this time, I made good money, paid all my paint bills, paid all my living expenses but wasn't disciplined enough to invest into what I was creating, I eventually run out of work and went and got a job and work at a very reputable painting company now and make a good living and work with journeymen so I'm happy and content.
Chris do you have any regrets continuing to work in your business alongside your employees versus creating systems so you don't have to do any work and it runs itself?
I've had liability business insurance for decades. From time to time I've been told I do not need it, even by an insurance agent. I feel better with it. I've never had to use it. I minimize my liability exposure by rarely using spray equipment, being very careful with volatiles (mostly water based) and I work by myself. I don't do contracts (neither party has legal leverage) and I only take money up front for materials. It's free market--the customer can let me go if they do not like my work. I live in rural, NE, Ok where there are lots of little towns (many lake-side) to work in and my income is fair and there is rarely work in winter.
I would love to do that where I live as side hustle, unfortunately Quebec is the only Province in whole Canada where you need actual certification to be painter! Crazy ,I will probably do it anyway 😂
Do you spray trim I'm someones house that is furnished etc? The thing about spraying is it almost or does take longer to prep to spray...than it would to roll etc.

Hi, I like your videos and the way you explain everything! What was your approach to advertise yourself in the beginning? How did you first job. Any door to door or something else? Thank you!
I have some experience painting I use todo it in summer for my buddy's step dad and I painted my uncle's mansion so I'm pretty decent at it and want to start my own business. but don't have much money to start or any really I got a vehicle is about all not truck a car.. so how should I go about it?
Presently in talks w a company that wants great work, done fast, cheap . Tryn real hard to not sell myself cheap when i know my worth . Just being reminded im better off my own boss .
It seems airless sprayer is a must in order to be competitive. There is a company on yt that says they don't do it because they don't like doing it. Not sure how that is possible.
what are you charging for a single bedroom for it to be feasible to make a trip home a trip back out and write/print up a 20 page document without even confirmation that youll get a job.. for people that dont live in a big city they cant charge through the roof or theyll be lucky to get 3 jobs a year
I usually got a price in mind and when they demand a price on the spot, I double it and work my way down to the original price I had in mind to start with
I needed this. Thank you. Im 23 and ive been getting calls for houses here and there. I need to get my license. I already have all the necessary things to start a business. I also have 4 friends that are really good at it. I just want to find an opportunity to get a contract for some tract houses. Im freaking excited man ! 3 years exp really pays off !
Boss i have a young growing painting company moving but before that. i lost my job and applied many others and now many companies are trying ti employ me but have the attention with the customers on my painting and what should i stick with now. I need some answers .
CHRIS! I don't see the links in the description you advertised in the video - registered contractor/licensing and insurance! I'm also a painting business owner in Boise and am curious who you use for insurance - I'm on Citizen's General ($1mill coverage) and want to compare. Thanks!
I’m from El Salvador currently in California working for a a painting company for 4 years I’m in shock when we finished a house in two day and I get pain $150 a day but my boss charge the homeowner up to 3,500k he got that money in 2 days that’s insane that’s why I am starting my own painting company
Love your videos. So inspirational and uplifting. Full of wisdom and encouragement. I live here in Florida. Would like to know what your going rate is? Also would love to get your bid packet. My son and I are trying to get a business going. Can I get some more info from you? Thank you and God Bless!!
10,430 apx in NJ to hire 1 employee for licensing alone. It goes down as you hire more. 1,200/annually to do it by yourself with no employees on the books.
@@calbeats5409 it was good last year I only used craigslist and this year I've had tons of work from word of mouth haven't had to do any advertising im actually turning work down
Excellent video. I'm not a painter I'm a plumber . however I customer liked my plumbing and asked if I would paint his house. He said he already had a bid of 2800 from a 3 man crew that would knock it out in 3 days. I said I could match that . I am halfway done and it's coming out nice but I see now that there's no way. It could be done in 3 days and 2800 is way to cheap. I wish I'd seen this video sooner
LOL..I've literally got everything I need to do this. Graco 700 Sprayer, Truck, Pressure washer, ladders, scaffold, hand tools, bid sheets, marketing cards, business name, and myself. All I need now is a customer...how in the HELL, do you do that? Its impossible.
What's your thoughts on someone not necessarily starting there own painting business but someone who paints by themselves, would that be profitable? Me and my dad painted a few houses last year, just us two, and we always bid pretty low but we also made a recent profit as well. I'm thinking of going into painting full time, not hiring anybody to help. Would that be a bad idea or good?(We only advertised on Craigslist by the way)
I'll definitely start a painting company this year but only if its worth having subcontractors doing the work. What do you think about having contactors do the work? Simply because I already do the work for my moving business and will already be making those profits as I grow the painting company. I'll more than likely have to have my guy that I can trust do the moves while I run the painting company. I know I can do both. I'll be busy as all hell but I know I can.
My fathers been painting for over 20 years and hasn’t had a chance to start his own business due to the fact of his legal status, which prevents him of legally owning and operating a painting business i’m turning 18 in three months and I’m trying to get truly invested with my father and start what he always wanted to

I live in Chicago where they gauge you for everything. Nice to see a state that seems to care.
The hardest part I've found is knowing what the going rate is so you can be competitive.
01 02 Just call your competition and ask them for an estimate on your home or friend house
shoot for 750 a day for work
Love 💕 your videos
Roy Luna thanks
I've been painting and drywalling for over 22 years, I was out on my own from 05-08, I was licensed and bonded and insured but I wasn't disciplined enough during this time, I made good money, paid all my paint bills, paid all my living expenses but wasn't disciplined enough to invest into what I was creating, I eventually run out of work and went and got a job and work at a very reputable painting company now and make a good living and work with journeymen so I'm happy and content.
Chris do you have any regrets continuing to work in your business alongside your employees versus creating systems so you don't have to do any work and it runs itself?
Game of Life I’m sure he could do that now, but I’m willing to bet he doesn’t want to. This is what he loves

I live in rural, NE, Ok where there are lots of little towns (many lake-side) to work in and my income is fair and there is rarely work in winter.
you dont need it until shit goes down hill. thats when you need it. no different than car insurance.
can you talk about, in another video of course going to door to door and getting perspective clients. what do you mean by that
I had to turn away a few contractors just because they didn't have insurance. Got to be licensed and bonded! Thanks for the video!
Not only is it different from state to state, but county to county as well.
Yes the county I live in all I need is a property management license. County next to me it is difficult to get a painting license
I would love to do that where I live as side hustle, unfortunately Quebec is the only Province in whole Canada where you need actual certification to be painter! Crazy ,I will probably do it anyway 😂
Thank you brother 😎
Do you spray trim I'm someones house that is furnished etc?
The thing about spraying is it almost or does take longer to prep to spray...than it would to roll etc.
WE do.

I wish i was 30 years younger, then i would go to your state and work in my profession as a painter, would been great

Being a licensed Contractor in California you can lien a house if they refuse to pay
I love you video, I will like to learn more from you, from Nigeria
Presently in talks w a company that wants great work, done fast, cheap . Tryn real hard to not sell myself cheap when i know my worth . Just being reminded im better off my own boss .
It seems airless sprayer is a must in order to be competitive. There is a company on yt that says they don't do it because they don't like doing it. Not sure how that is possible.
what are you charging for a single bedroom for it to be feasible to make a trip home a trip back out and write/print up a 20 page document without even confirmation that youll get a job.. for people that dont live in a big city they cant charge through the roof or theyll be lucky to get 3 jobs a year
I usually got a price in mind and when they demand a price on the spot, I double it and work my way down to the original price I had in mind to start with
How much Mark up you should make on a every job ? Specially if you sub contract the jobs ?
I needed this. Thank you. Im 23 and ive been getting calls for houses here and there. I need to get my license. I already have all the necessary things to start a business. I also have 4 friends that are really good at it. I just want to find an opportunity to get a contract for some tract houses. Im freaking excited man ! 3 years exp really pays off !
Great video. Thanks
Boss i have a young growing painting company moving but before that. i lost my job and applied many others and now many companies are trying ti employ me but have the attention with the customers on my painting and what should i stick with now. I need some answers .
Any tips for a 22 year old looking to start his own painting business?
Yes I’m 23 and thinking about starting mine
What kind of info do you put in an 18-20 page bid packet? Insurance? Measurements? Paint Type? Good video and great presentation.
I loved this video!
I have my own small company it bay the bills also have a chance to start a food truck running on the side
Big fan love you bro out of ny painters
Great video! Is there any advertising sites you recommend? I started a paint company last year in spokane Wa and only use craigslist.
How is that working with Craigslist? How many clients a week?
@@calbeats5409 it was good last year I only used craigslist and this year I've had tons of work from word of mouth haven't had to do any advertising im actually turning work down
Good vid, only thing missing is tips on how to get that phone ringing..
@Shawn Breeze it was already said. Business Card, Web Site, Social Media, and go to the field looking for customers.
Its impossible.
it’s all starts with recommendations
It's all in word of mouth. Do you work and be fair and honest and your company will spread like a wild fire just off of referrals
Would that be a bad idea or good?(We only advertised on Craigslist by the way)
Good stuff, 💪🏽🤙🏽
Appreciate it
starting my own painting business

I thought this was John Cena 😅

I'll definitely start a painting company this year but only if its worth having subcontractors doing the work. What do you think about having contactors do the work? Simply because I already do the work for my moving business and will already be making those profits as I grow the painting company. I'll more than likely have to have my guy that I can trust do the moves while I run the painting company. I know I can do both. I'll be busy as all hell but I know I can.
