SSDs are definitely a big improvement over HDDs these days. Files load faster and reduce load times compared to HDDs which are slower. I swapped from an external HDD to an SSD was definitely worth the upgrade.
And then once we get into this gen when ps4 gets dropped, games will use the ps5s Oodle Kraken/texture compression to speed things up even more. You can already see glimpses of it in the one second load times for Miles Morales, Ratchet and clank rift apart and various other titles.
It’s not just about speed. SSDs have no moving parts. They’re quieter, less prone to failure, generate less heat, etc. m.2 drives are 10x faster than SSDs. A PS5 can take an m.2 and boot in seconds - That’s what you want.
Wow u stated the most obvious benefits of an ssd want a cookie?
I agree 100% 🖐🏻
@@pigeonstrangler I agree, however like John said in the video, some people might not be as tech savvy. And can't upgrade thier ps5 with a new M.2 drive with bigger storage
I have a T7 SSD. It works amazingly well and definitely improves load times for PS4 games.
Are you on PS4 pro?
My T3 and T5 are still going strong on my Series X, I bought the T3 500gb for £142 back in Feb 2017. Fast forward to now and I just bought a Crucial PS5 spec (actually for my pc) 1tb m.2 ssd for £80. With rampant inflation these days it’s nice to see tech still doubles capacity, adds hugely better performance while also sliding down in cost over the years.
@@cesarkaryango359 No. I used it with the Pro. When I got the PS5, I connected it right to the USB and had access to all my ps4 games
I wish u could put ps5 games on it
is it T7 Sheild?
I actually did this; got myself an 8TB Samsung 870 qvo, put it in an 10gbit enclosure and put all my ps4 games on it. ps4 pro is now basically just using an old 512gb hdd as system drive with no games on it. the transfer to my ps5 was really fast and flawless, when i got one a few weeks back and performance is absolutely insane.
And yes, it is basically filled, just about 300gb left free.
Nice!
Damm, isn't that as much as a ps5 or more?
Upgrading your ps4 HDD will make the system itself faster as well.
8TB is more storage than all devices i own.
Which 10Gig enclosure did you use?
I changed my base ps4's hdd to a 2tb firecuda hybrid sshd, found it on amazon at 70$, pretty sure that was a mistake on their part because a 1tb version costs the same, and nowadays the 2tb version is around 150$. Best purchase i've made, never had to worry about space again, and games were loading in considerably faster.
Hell yeah - I put a 1TB Crucial MX500 in mine
That was definitely a mistake. You're so lucky lol I have the 1 TB for that same price; and honestly, it was worth every cent.
Nice score
I've got the Samsung-T5 1TB for my PS5 and absolutely love it all my ps4 stuff is on it
I'm using a desktop class 8TB Seagate HDD and it already makes a big difference for loading speeds on PS4 Pro, that's a thing to consider if you have a huge library.
Swapped out my internal HD with an SDD on my ps4 pro a few years ago. It just made every game in my library better. Been using it as an external drive on the ps5 ever since it came out. Such a good investment.
Been using t5 with ps5....havent had to upgrade my internal storage yet with all the ps4 games running on that...speed and performance have been amazing
Great tips , I’ve been looking at changing my ext drive to ssd
i own this exactly ssd since years and its a blast! thanks for officialy confirming it :)
If you have any plans to maintain your ps4 and use it even once you get a ps5, it's worth taking the time to replace the internal HDD with an SSD. There are tons of video tutorials, it's not difficult. It's more than just loading times, the entire console becomes snappier. Totally worthwhile for keeping it alive for years to come. That and repasting the SOC and doing a full dust clean out.
Already bought this same SSD for my Xbox Series X, a 2TB WD Black for my PS5, and the 1TB Seagate memory card for my Series X.
I've probably spent more on storage this year than I have on games!
Couldn’t agree more. I was lucky enough recently to get hold of a PS5 and purchased lots of preowned PS4 games so ended up picking up a 2TB Seagate external hard drive for £62 from Amazon and have now moved over my games and just left the main hard drive for my PS5 games. Only had the console for a couple of weeks and I’ve been blown away so far. My last console was the original Xbox one and last PlayStation I owned was the PS2 so have missed out on so much.
I have this same SSD. By flopping all the PS4 games over to the SSD, it really helped on storage and the load times are insane.
Just bought the T7 about 2 months ago and it is definitely a good investment while I try to get the internal ssd for my ps5
SSD are good if your looking for speed and performance but it can’t be modded to use iflash. External HDD you can use iflash to play ps5 games on the screen as long as it’s 3.1 USB.
Thanks John. A very good vidéo as usualy. But do You know when people will be able to copy the save games on an external HDD/SSD on PS5. This functionality is really needed since months... Any update about this ?
How much is the one you were using in the video? Size? I just have a 4tb external plugged into the back of my 5 and can play all my ps4 games without any issue. I also installed the Seagate FireCuda SSD into the ps5.
hey John, quick question:
can you clone the original PS4 disk to a SSD drive? wouldn't it cut down on the setup or do you get errors?
I actually swapped the internal for an SSD and bought an external SSD to swap between the PS4 and PS5. This holds true. It's quite spectacular the performance boost I get. I will say that the internal SSD installs almost instantly, while it takes about 3x longer to install to the external. They load games just as fast, which is odd, but I thought I'd note that difference.
This whole ps5 ssd speed thing is just a massive gimmick. I have 8tb worth of external ssds and my games run better and smoother on the external than even the so called ultra fast internal ssd.
@@lordspalse0062 Yes, but not quite. That has more to do with game optimization than speeds. Most game developers are still designing throughput with PC's, PS4, and Xbox in mind. So similar data placement on drive from every previous era. Similar draw from RAM. Similar resource placement on maps (like rehashing certain items placed in the same folder).
It's also a lot more expensive rebuilding a game for a different system to fully capture that system capability.
The nature of the PS5's I/O is to fully utilize the NVME throughput to RAM and vice versa. We'll see if any game developer actually takes the time to develop with that in mind. Otherwise, yes, we'll see at best small gains, but it's just programming bottlenecks rather than actual hardware gimmicks.
There are a few developers who made some videos discussing the potentials, and the difficulty. As game development has already hit an ultimate bottleneck related to throughput on general mobo's based on the old/still current architecture. Sony's design is another outroad to new potentials but will take a long time to rework how to design these games to actually take advantage of what they've created.
So until that point...technically yes, it's a gimmick. If they do, or are forced to, or some game company does and makes a huge breakthrough in gameplay quality, like instant mesh swaps as you turn the camera to where you can't notice the change (so going from simple to complex), which no PC system can right now do, given bottlenecks in throughput between RAM and Drive, or between RAM and CPU or RAM and GPU. It's a matter of time and whether we'll see this with this generation, or the industry finally adjusts with the next one and the gaming community will look back at Sony pulling a Sega and predicting the next phase of breaking past system limits, at least in one area. Still need other innovations to really push the envelop. We haven't had any noticeable jumps in raw power in nearly 2 decades, especially in the last 10 (why they went multi-processor, but even that has hangups, mostly in OS and board throughput issues, the latter of which is Sony's fix via PS5).
Sorry to expand a bit more, but the way these developers talk about it, the difference in development methodologies is so different it's like reinventing a new form of travel. This would really add to cost. We might see more optimization of PS5 and thus gains over time, but we probably will never see any game actually take advantage of PS5 design until way at the end, and even then only an exclusive title that's been worked on for 3...4...6? years? Something crazy like that. Then next gen is when we'll probably see PC adopt a similar approach alongside the next Xbox, and at that point we'll see the gimmick turned into an experience.
@@lordspalse0062 but you can’t run PS5 games directly off the external SSD
@@ignasia7230 I truly hope we see the benefits of the ssd especially with larger worlds and advanced physics not just loading speeds. As far as loading speeds and data streaming is concerned, even sata 3 ssd is more than okay.
@@CH-bn7qb You're right. However at the moment I don't see anything so special about a ps5 game that will not let it run on an external ssd. My ps4 games on external ssd on my ps5 feels more fluid than actual ps5 games on the internal ssd. I attribute this though mostly to games running independent of OS contention with the ssd as is the case with internal.
I had the T5 and switched to the T7 and its a blast
I just bought a SSD for my PS4 pro because of this video. The effect is very noticeable. The menus in horizon forbidden West load almost instantly now and general load times are definitely reduced. Today I will check if using the external SSD puts generates less heat and fan noise in the PS.
If you're having loud fan noise on your Pro you need new thermal paste, and maybe a new fan. Open it up and deep clean it. Put new paste and it will be whisper quiet during just about any game you play. Even the big games like RDR2, Forbidden West, Elden Ring etc will run at least 75% more quiet during its most intense parts after a thermal paste change and fan clean etc. Also remember to optimize your PS4 Pro in its settings to get the best performance (turn off resource draining features you dont use)
The Samsung ssd are nice.I had mine sitting on top a cpu fan that was sitting on top of a onkyo reciever. The fan keeps my amp and ssd cool. Those ssd will get hot when adding stuff on them.
I've had my T7 since launch its great
Is there a specific Port I can use for the PS4 pro? Or I can just use the back USB port and it will be just as fast as the front ones?
P.S I'm using a professional SanDisk G-Drive SSD. It's 3.2 gen 2
I went out & got a firecuda 530 SSD for my PS5 due to your recommendation videos over the past 6months, yet to install as i wish to give my console a full safe clean that is needed since the release 2 years ago & has been abused for 4+ hours each & everyday. My question is; is this still the best option for the next generation console or would it be safer to return it now while I still have my receipt & swap for something else ?
If you Keep a smartphone constantly charging (above and beyond recharging its battery to 100%) it will end up wearing the battery down faster. Is this the same with a PS Controller keeping them plugged into the relevant console 24/7?
Hello! Would an External SSD also considerably improve time and texture loading on a PS4 Slim. I saw in the video that you have the PS4 PRO.
If yes, what SSD model would you recommend?
Is there any noticeable improvement in load times using an external ssd with ps5 vs a standard external hd?
I've been using the T7 for my PS4 games on my PS5 since release
I was actually looking to get an external drive a little while ago as when I played Spiderman Miles Morales again, some sections of the game would drop framerates severely.
I got a 2tb T7 when I put a 2tb WD SN850 in my PS5 just for all of my PS4 games. I was running out of space in my entertainment center and this way I have every game I could ever want to play ready to go on one console. Now to just clear out my PS3 backlog!
Hey great video I just have one question because stuff are piling up!
So if I get one of these I don't need an internal seagate FireCuda 530?
Will this Samsung T7 external SSD do the exact same work play the games from and have the speeds of the FireCuda 530. Or is this only to store the games like a regular external hard drive?
Getting a Ps5 for my birthday and would really love to know if the Samsung T7 & 530 will do the same job.
You can also buy just a regular SATA SSD and high speed SATA to USB adapter and use those they are cheaper then the proper external SSDs shown and they work the same
Just got mine today! Quick question. It comes with a USB C and a USB A connector. Is there a difference in performance if I use the USB A connector? I prefer to keep the front of my PS5 clean of wires. Thanks!
Thank you for your help
I see you say plug into the front USB port, I have had my external hard drive plugged into the back of the ps5 since release date, definitely changing to the front now! Just got a 4TB heatsink aswell so that's gonna help even more with storage... Great video as always!
He is using a drive with a USB-C connector going to the front C port, not just a standard USB. It's an important distinction, as I don't think the rear of the console has a C port.
@@MrShadow2x yeah your right, tried to plug my external drive into the front port and it doesn't work haha! But I have now got over 8TB of storage 🔥
i have a samsung 1tb m.2 internal ssd and an external t5 on my ps5 and it makes a noticible difference over having everything just on the standard ps5 ssd
I once heard that the internal sata interface of the PS4 Fat and Slim was gimped compared to the PS4 Pro and there wasn't much gains on using internal SSDs on those.
So the real question is: how does it compare using an internal SSD vs an external SSD on these versions?
Does the USB 3.0 runs better than the SATA for those?
If the SATA is really gimped, is it still worth it compared to a regular 5400rpm HDD?
What about a 7200rpm external HDD via USB 3.0 compared to an external SSD via the same USB 3.0 ?
I have an old NVME SSD in a 3rd party enclosure and i got pretty hot (also the USB cable ports) How are the Temps of the Samsung T7 and WD Black P50 or P10?
I own a PS4 pro and play CoD Vanguard that is stored on a default external hardrive. I don't know if my console needs a deep clean or what but it runs very hard and sounds like a jet taking off, my guess is that the game is pushing the console's limit and loading everything it can to play. My question is will the SSD drive improve the console's performance? or will it be the same?
i had an build in ssd in my ps4 for years.. now im on ps5 and sold the ps4. but the ssd in the ps4 is a completely different experience than the regular HDD
I had just watched a video where you were suggesting the 530 Firecuda 1TB. Which is better, in your opinion? This one or the Firecuda with Heatsink installed?
Firecuda for PS5 games and this for PS4 games. I have the Firecuda SSD but I'm thinking of grabbing this for my Ps4 games. That way I can throw all my Ps4 Games on this and have my internal ssd and Firecuda for PS5 games.
Upgrading to ssd is on best thing i've ever done to my original ps4. The games load even faster than a ps4pro's HDD and somehow even shorten the online multiplayer queue time
Price, performance or amount of storage.... you can only have two. thats just technology in general (replace storage with quality when not comparing SSDs and Hdds)
Upgrading to ssd is one of the best thing i've ever done to my original ps4. The games load even faster than a ps4pro's HDD and somehow even shorten the online multiplayer queue time
Remember to optimize your PS4 in the settings to get the best performance out of it (turn off resource draining features you dont use, plenty of videos on UA-cam(
John, you forgot to mention arguably the most important factor with using an external SSD. if you're on base ps4, DON'T! it's a waste of money. Even though SSDs are way faster, you will see little to no benefit plugging it into a USB 2 port. The base ps4 uses SATA 2 at 3gbps on the mobo, USB2 at 480mbps is way slower! However if you have a ps4 slim or ps4 pro with a USB3 port. You'll actually get more bandwidth 5gbps through the external SSD than you would installing an SSD internally to the SATA header.
Ger your facts straight before encouraging people to go and potentially buy tech, that will give them no benefit or performance increase!
That is not entirely correct. The original PS4 have USB 3.0 (5gps) the Slim and Pro USB 3.1 (10gbps). Using an external SSD i the PS4 base, is still a viable option
@@Fjongus base ps4 does not have usb3. Why would they have SATA 2 headers but usb 3 ports. That doesn't make sense. Besides there is no blue on the plug, which indicates it's only usb2.
@@Fjongus as for the slim and pro having USB 3.1 at 10gbps. The ps4s APU can't even put through 6GBPS. The port might be capable of high bandwidth, but you're bottlenecked by the APU.
Still worth it if you own an original ps4 and plan on upgrading to a PS5.
@@AshtonDwyer false, the spec sheet literally says that the base ps4 has usb 3.
I did the internal SSD and I love it.
thanks man i really need the space for my PS5 i'm tired of having to delete games for space
I just use my 4TB non-SSD external HD to store the PS4 games. When I play the game I move it to the internal SSD. This forces me to beat the game before I can move it back to the External HD and free up the space for the next game I am going to play. My long term plan will be to eventually get a 2-4 TB NVME SSD for the open slot in the PS5 when the prices become reasonable hopefully in 2-3 years.
John, I already have a SSD in my PS4 Pro. Aside from easy back and forth between the PS4 and PS5, is using a performance external SSD faster than and internal SSD? I’m guessing not?
I'll be doing more testing soon!
Have been planning on upgrading the Internal HDD on my PS4 Pro to the Samsung EVO 870, but I'll need an external drive to do the transfer. Would the T7 or T7 shield be even faster than the evo?
Can I use an external ssd in addition to an internal ssd on my ps5? Or will it only recognize one?
Are there in internal or external ssd or hard drive that you can run PS5 games on yet ?
Hey I wanna ask a question about the ps4,every time I put a controller to charge I can feel the charger being able to move around a lot. Should I be worried?
I was looking to upgrade and get a external SSD, but my question is I've already had a Seagate HDD for a long time now, so if I got a external SSD, can I plug them both into my ps5 to transfer all the files from one drive to the other?
can the t7 utilize usb-a instead? My usb-c is taken by my arctis headsset
Does it have to be the front C port for fastest speeds? I have it plugged into the USB at the back near the vents.
I have the Samsung t5 for my computer, so I can use it with my ps4?
I have the black 3/4tb Samsung with the PlayStation logo I got my PS five I always put it in the back I never knew you’re supposed to plug it into the c-port … is that a big deal - speed load time etc ? Not the biggest tech person but I can easily change this lol -Thank you
Is the Samsung T7 SSD already formatted for the ps4 and ps5?
Can you put ps5 games on this? Because for HDD you can only put PS4 games
Off topic, but looking for help! When I plug in the usb cable to the ps4 controller the L2 button rondomly triggers without me pressing it. Brand new controller and official usb cable. I dont think its the usb ports on ps4 because all 3 do the same. Thank You for any help.
can u play ps5 games directly from external SSD?? as far as i know u can just store them in there
But do the SSD‘s compensate for the lack of quality games?
I've been using this for over two years now on my PS4... I have the original PS4 and ran out of space so just got the 2 TB of external storage
So for the ps5 the type c is faster than the 3.0 usb at the back ?
I use the seagate 2tb’s. I love them. I think mine are external harddrives but lemme review mine
So is this better than an internal SSD? Because I already purchased and installed the WD Black internal SSD to my PS5.
Does the PS4 have USB 2 or USB 3? If it's USB 2.0 would that be a bottleneck for an external SSD?
The lag not using an SSD Damn near rendered games unplayable. Love the info!
I actually have a RAID external HD on my PS4 which is quite a bit faster than any of the external HD and SSD drives available. It works great and I play nearly all my games directly from it. As I understand it, however, you can't play games directly from external storage on the PS5.
I use this for my PS5 for my PS4 games. This reacts just as fast as my FIRECUDA internal SSD. It really is awesome.
No it doesn't, you can't even play PS5 games off external drives. It's not fast enough. I have a FireCuda, it's 7300MBs that's literally faster than the storage already in the PS5.
Ok. I said. It’s for my PS4 games attached to the PS5. I never said I put PS5 games on it. And. I have the same FIRECUDA 530 with heatsink. And the external is remarkably close. Calm yourself
@@TheRamboss There's nothing I've played in my life on my ps5 that suggests it may not be able to run on external ssd. This is a scam. Even my ps4 games on external ssd feels more fluid and smooth than the same on internal ps5 ssd. Cross gen games should allowed to run on external ssd (not hdd)
Is it best to use strictly for PS4 games?
I have the T7 for ps4 games and it's great
I bought it thinking i can play my ps4 (disc) games to my ps5 (digital version) but negative ....if u ever find out how to...plz let me knw thanks
Heck yeah!! I almost bought the T7 a couple times lol doesn’t it have biometric lock on it or something? I have around 8TB of externals for Xbox & all were HDDs but when I got the 1X a few years ago I pulled the trigger on a 2TB 860Evo & WOW! So as soon as I got the PS5 even b4 I had a bunch of games lol I snatched up a 2TB MX500 for $140. &Playing Division2 the 1x looked great & loaded decently quick (I thought) but when I finally booted up the 860Evo it was night & day! I would be in a group & we would fast travel somewhere & when every1 arrived I was already fighting down the block😂 every1 was like yooo wtf🧐 😛I would rather transfer between drives, so 4me keeping a big HDD to store “backup” games on & then transferring the games I’m currently playing or going to play soon onto an internal/external SSD is my best bet (given the prices & all) hopefully SSDs will keep dropping more & more!
John I know this is off topic, but could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do an updated video for your network setup/settings? That’s what originally got me into your channel.
Nothing has changed for me! Netduma set it & forget it! Works great 👍🏻

I have a question can you still play ps5 games on the external ssd or do you have to transfer them still
You have to transfer the ps5 games back to the internal drive in order to play them
I was thinking about getting a ps4 pro for my ps4 games (I have just the ps5). For collection purpuses do u think it worth having both consoles? or should I just go for an external ssd (or HD) for my PS5 for ps4 games? I have a Samsung T5 connected to my PS5 ... it seems fast for PS4 games, but the transfer speed is slow (150MB/s) to move PS5 games back/forth. Anyone have any ideas what the issue could be? When I copy/move PS4 games onto the internal PS5 drive, I get 380-400MB/s.
His outro is forever iconic.
Hey brother , what if i take the ssd out of its case and place it inside the PS4? Im not upgrading ever but i would like 4TB external seagate inside my ps4 rather than external.
I've been using an ssd in the ps4 for a few years now. And I see use a 2 and half TB hard drive for games
Well I already use a 4tb hdd and it works fine for me but if I can’t play ps5 games off of an ssd external drive then it’s worthless to me I will still have to buy an internal for the ps5 for storage
I just got a seagate 2tb internal ssd can Ps5 take the 2tb instead of 1tb please help. it's the one u recommend just a couple vlogs back but when I went to you're affiliate it was 1tb but I got 2tb will it work aswell as the 1tb. Thanks

Still thinking of getting a PS4 since the PS5 is always out of stock and I already have an xbox series x. Do you guys think ps4 is still worth it or should i wait for ps5?
If exclusive titles or physical copies don't matter to you then just stick with xbox x, it has better spec, better backward compatibility and prolly cheaper gamepass. Just get ps5 if someday you got lucky. Would've bought xbox myself if only the gamepass was available at my country. Have to stick with ps4 until somehow someday sony got their stock problems sorted out and not selling ps5 $100-200 more expensive than the original price.
Before the new PlayStation premium thing I need to buy a Samsung T seven external and a new SSD for the PS five damn
Btw, PS5 games don’t work on external drives. You can store them on there but can’t play them off of them and need to transfer them to internal storage to play them.
I'm not too tech savvy but if you buy disc games, can't you bypass an external SSD altogether? Albeit at a lower performance.
All games must install to the ssd before they can be played whether physical or digital.
