    All good points there. I travel with hard cases and top box because they came with the bike, i like the security of lockable luggage. I carry a spare throttle and clutch cable, 2 tubes, 17+19 inch with a foot pump, i also put all my stuff in backpacks inside the boxes, makes it easier.

    Good to start my day hearing and watching a person make sense and staying true. Thank you for that! Thanks too for just reaching down to get your shoe to show! That was perfect and made me laugh... I was trying to think of anyone else who would have done that and could not think of one! And that is to your absolute credit. Carry on and keep coming back!

    As always a useful and fun video. Thanks. As others here I like your down-to-earth style and acknowledgement that what you say might not be right for everyone - wish more youtubers were less arrogant!

    Great vid as usual, it made me think when I was young I’d jump on my bike and as long as I had my wallet,cash and fags I’d be off without a care, then as I got older I’d stress about what to take too many tools, pump, waterproofs, clothes and whatever else I thought I’d need, I’d travel to fast missing out on so much on my journey just to get to my destination, now I’ve slowed down and will try and find more interesting routes and carry a lot less, just deal with things as they come and if needed use my breakdown recovery, like the man says “you can always pick things up along the way” but the most useful things I carry are bungee cords and a small ratchet strap, that can get you out of a lot of situations 😊

    Very good .. I'm far from being an expert, but I found when I spent a month travelling to the Black sea and back from the UK, sports clothes were great, cycle shorts without the padding and sports T-shirts could be washed using travel washing stuff and would be almost dry by the morning either camping or in a cheap hotel ..

    I like to use Mosko Moto Reckless 80 soft pannier/ holster system. In my view it is the better compromise between tying soft bags on and off every day and the weight of racks / risk of injury from hard panniers. Once you tie the holsters to the side of the bike ( pillion pegs area) and at the rear of the pillion seat/ front of rear rack, you slide the 20 L side bags in and out in seconds. Over the pillion seat they have a beaver tail flap that uses velcro closure that you can expand/ contract as needed. For example, if it gets really hot and you don't want to wear your jacket, it will be secured by the flap. The small bag that sits on the pillion seat is great for holding electronic gear/ air pumps/ fluids/ spare 21 inch tube. My tent fits behind that bag and is held by the beaver flap. Itchy Boots uses this system in her later trips.
    I keep my clothes ( 3 sets of under wear and socks= 6 days worth) , spare hiking trousers, thin merino wool jumper and a puffer jacket ( also serves as my pillow) and a flat pair of sneakers in a 20 L duffle ( usually half full) and toiletry bag. I strap the 20L duffle onto the rear rack , edge wise if I can using Rok straps. This keeps most of the weight between the axles, which gives more stability in sand and mud. Two things I tie to the rear is a pair of thongs ( aka flip flops) for night use and shower shoes ( avoid tinea and warts form communal showers) and a soft 6 pack cool bag for food/ booze bought at the last shop I pass for the day.
    To carry spare fuel/ water I use Naz bags from Oz that can be tied to the tank or the front tank bars. They are heavy duty canvas/ cheap and rugged and are designed to hold fuel and water bladders. Rotopax system is expensive IMO!
    Tank bags? buy a small volume one so you don't fill it with stuff you don't need. Also, a quick release design to make refuelling simple.
    Another tip is to keep a washing basket or bin in your shed. When you get home, put anything you didn't use on the last trip in there to reconsider whether you really need to use it next time.

    Just watched a Nick Sanders in Oz vid on his Tenere 700. Coming from a bicycle travel background, he has very little at the back, and most of his stuff on the sides against engine/frame guards, just like the Himalayan. Good vid thanx.

    People still come down on one side or the other when it comes to luggage (Hard vs Soft). But is there a reason we don't see more options/people using semi hard luggage? I've never used any, Is it that they offer the worst of both worlds ?

    • @timparry5028
      @timparry5028 4 роки тому

      I use both. A medium sized top box (not one of those huge things) which is great for the daily commute and some cheap throw over panniers and also a roll top bag across the the back seat if required for longer camping trips. I can then lock a bit of stuff away if needed. The top box is a plastic Hepco and Becker one and is really rugged but being plastic is lighter than the all aluminium boxes. Like wise with throwovers, it keeps the weight down and you can get cheapo throwovers for less than £100. Can't get my head around the cost of some of the adventure luggage now both hard and soft!!!!!

  • @roadwarrior8560
    @roadwarrior8560 4 роки тому

    would you not find a top box handy for dropping your helmet and tankbag in for stops along the way? thanks for posting.

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  4 роки тому +1

      It could do but I never see a need to put a helmet in the box. Just carry it. And if I used a top box I wouldn't have anywhere to put the dry bag. I suppose more honestly I just hate the way top boxes look!

    Over the years I've developed a system, if something hasn't been used or used enough it doesn't get taken again. My girlfriend and myself now have a list that we know we need and that's all we take. Alot of people forget that most items can be bought on the road, so why take everything to be self sufficient? Another tip is get a few sets of the lomo waterproof mini bags I think they are 1 litre up to 4 litres. I use these to separate of items into groups so your not hunting for items within a large main dry bag.

    Crocs rock! The Bistro has a great non-slip tread that they've worked into some other models. I've busted my ass with the original Croc tread on wet concrete and rocks. And if they were good enough for culinary school and restaurants why wouldn't they be great for when we're off the bike?

    Great vid from someone who knows a thing or two about packing essentials for travel. As you say we all overpack, but it's a good reminder as to how to pack. Nice to see have the same opinion of Crocks. The holes are there to let your dignity seep out, but they do the job. Cheers mate, hope you, Sarah and your whole family stay safe.
