    EternaBond Tape 2 Year Review - How Is It Holding Up?
    • EternaBond Tape 2 Year...
    NOTE: Scroll Down To see the links to the materials I used for this project
    I finally did a project on our 4 year old travel trailer that I've been wanting to do for several years and am very happy with how this project turned out. I installed Eterna Bond Tape over all sealant caulked areas on the roof to help prevent future water leaks.
    The Dicor I use for patching and the sealant compound that the factory uses on the roof seams breaks down with time and with this leaks can develop and I found myself always inspecting our roof and applying Dicor to troubled areas. Installing this tape "Should" eliminate any future leaks from developing in the areas where I applied the tape.
    "Warning this video is long and is very detailed with tips to show you how I sealed each area on the roof.
    Note: Products I used and links to them are provided below.
    Here is an answer to a question that comes up from time to time -
    The best way to replace a skylight, fan, etc if needed is to just cut around what ever you are wanting to remove with a utility knife being careful not to cut into the roof material if you can but if you do its not a big deal.
    After you do this you can remove the tape above where the screws are and then gently pry off what you are removing with a putty knife.
    Install the new item on the roof but first apply butyl tape along the bottom of the item you are reinstalling just below the screw holes. Screw the item down and then you have two choices.
    1) install Dicor self leveling sealant over the screws and along the edge and allow the Dicor to fully dry for 30 days then apply the tape over the item screws and then over the tape not removed (It will stick really good to the existing tape, just make sure you clean the area really well.
    2) or you can install the item as I mentioned above and don't install the Dicor and just put tape over the item screws and over the tape that was not removed.
    NOTE: if you try and remove the tape from roof material with a scraper, chemicals, or heat and the roof material was not put down at the factory very good you take the chance or the roofing material being damaged. So I find it best to leave the tape and apply over it, the company says it bonds to itself well and I also know this because I have done it and it stays put.
    Here is a couple videos where I installed a few items on a PVC roof and did not use Dicor or any other sealant other than tape. I hope this information helps you.

    Dicor drying times vary depending on the product and weather conditions:
    In 50-70° F weather, Dicor lap sealant skins over in about five minutes, becomes waterproof in about four hours, cures 80% in 48 hours, and cures 100% in 30 days.

      Thank you so so much Steve, you made my day. I try and do my best to be very through showing and explaining what and why I do what I do. Most of the people like my videos and there are a few out there that say "you could have showed us how to do that in a couple minutes" My replies to them are I do my best to explain how to do things for everyone, some people are not mechanically inclined and I hope to inspire others to try to do things on their own to save money and for the satisfaction that I did that :) Thanks again Steve :) Here's a link to my other videos if you haven't seen them already, some of the first ones I came out with are informative but the camera work isn't all that good. ua-cam.com/users/MichaelBracewellTheTravelTrailerGuyvideos

    I am an older woman. A while ago, I realized that I could get a big project (like this) done, if I broke it down to smaller steps. I do smaller sections or parts, one or a few at a time, and in a few days of a few hours each, I can complete projects alone. We need to be sensible in our individual performance limits. If it takes 6 days, instead of 1 or 2, who cares! It is getting the project done PROPERLY, not fast, that is important. Who cares when other people come buy and say "Are you STILL doing that"?. Just say " Yeah, I am doing it right, MY way".
    In a big project, every work session is an achievement to be proud of. Small bites, also, get a big job done.
    You don't have to kill yourself, trying to preform to other people's criteria. Go at your own pace with the directions of the project in mind. Don't hurt yourself, or waste product by hurrying..
    Be the Turtle, not the Hare.
    Slow and steady.

      @@thetraveltrailerguy Thank You for a wonderful program. I plan to Tropicool my roof once it gets cooler, and past the rainy season. Your program showed what I WANT to do to make it a job well done. No one else on the net has gone in to such detail.
      I am hoping that if I REALLY get this project done in the right sequence or proper reinforcement, the roof recoating will be leak free and cool for several years (not needing a redo every year or two).
      Sometimes you have to spend some $$ and extra time to do it right.
      Your easily understandable tips will help me immensely.
      Thank You, again.

    Well worth watching. My wife and I just purchased our first brand new travel trailer from a local dealer after owning a couple used ones. I always kept up on watching my seals and re-caulking when needed on the used ones. I might do this right away to the new one once I pick it up next week just as a precautionary measure before the dicor has time to break down.

    Excellent video I learned a few things. I also painted my refrigerator vent cover but I did it in white Then instead of using silicone in the holes I put rubber stoppers in to be able to remove them easily

      @thetraveltrailerguy  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching and sharing what you did. I like that you painted the vent white, it helps hide it on the roof and by being white it doesn't not get as hot, And installing rubber stoppers in the holes instead of silicone is a lot better than what I did. Awesome, thanks for sharing. I like it! www.youtube.com/@thetraveltrailerguy/videos

    Excellent job, Michael, and a very informative how to video. I used 6 inch Eternabond tape on the front and rear and around the vents, skylights and fan. Next I will be using 4 inch Eternabond along the sides using the roller and screen tool to properly seal it to the roofing membrane, metal edging, and vinyl gasket. I also rounded the edges.

Yep Flex Seal tape and spray is not as good as Eterna Bond Tape, its made to stick and stay in place. Thanks again.

    Great video! We just purchased a 2010 5th wheel, and the first thing I will do is inspect and reseal everything that looks like it could possibly be a future leak. Just one tip on using the Eternabond tape......you should always start at the back of the roof, and work your way towards the front. The reason being, the tape overlaps will always be facing the rear, so that when you're pulling your camper down the road in the rain, the water will run off one piece of tape onto the top of the other, moving towards the back of the camper. Your overlaps should always direct the water onto the TOP of the next piece. And......thanks for the roller tip!!! That was genius!!!! Happy camping!

    Absolutely the best video I've seen showing how to best apply Eternabond, thank you!!!
    My only question is I always thought you couldn't combine different sealant products with one another.
    Dicor with Eternabond or vice versa. Did you verify with Eternabond that it was perfectly OK to use Eternabond directly over old Dicor?
    You are a consumate professional Sir!

    • @thetraveltrailerguy

      Thank you so much for watching, comment, and compliment Stephen.
      Eterna Bond tape will stick to Dicor as long as it is cleaned very well along with the roof area where it is applied.
      If you apply any Dicor prior to installing the tape make sure you allow the Dicor to fully cure for a minimum of 30 days.
      Eterna Bond will not stick to Silicone so if you have it then remove it and clean the area very well prior to installing the tape.
      Make sure you roll the tape like I did in the video to make sure you get a good bond.

    I am getting ready to do this soon....My trailer has a No-Walk roof. I'm a little nervous about the front cap, AC and antenna in towards the roof center, that they will be hard to access. We'll see.....but first I will be swapping out the stock dometic 300 specimen collector for the 310 model with the one piece ceramic bowl. Just came via FedEX today.

      Sounds like you have some work on your hands making improvements, that's a good thing. I was thinking what you might try so you can get on the roof is to buy a thin sheet of plywood and place it on the roof where you want to work on it and move it around to places you need to work. Looks great. My concern is what on earth would you do if your skylight was damaged? How would you ever remove it & replace?

    • @thetraveltrailerguy
      @thetraveltrailerguy  Рік тому

      Great question I know I have answered this question before somewhere. I should have covered this in the video. I will when I make a follow up video in the near future on how its all holding up (it still looks like the day I installed it).
      Lets say I have to replace my skylight:
      1) The tape is pretty hard to remove so I would carefully cut around the edge of the skylight being careful not to cut the roof even though it would not hurt anything.
      2) Then I would remove the tape where the screws hold down the skylight and then remove the skylight.
      3) I would then install the new skylight and put a small amount of self leveling Dicor along the edge of the skylight and over the screw heads. And then wait one (1) month for the Dicor to cure as recommended by Dicor.
      4) After curing I would just place new Eterna Bond Tape over the skylight screws along with the outside edge of the skylight right over the Dicor and existing Eterna Bond Tape. It does a great job sticking to itself for a great seal.
      5) If your skylight is older or made out of cheap material I would suggest replacing it with a new quality made skylight prior to installing the tape.
      I hope this answers your question? Thanks for watching

      Thank you for commenting, watching, and asking your question. Here's what Eterna Bond says about longevity:
      How long does EternaBond® last?
      Because EternaBond® is made using MicroSealant Technology®, depending on surrounding conditions, EternaBond® has an estimated life expectancy of 18-35 years if applied correctly. The "pre-activated" shelf life of EternaBond®, stored correctly, is 5 years!
      Regarding warranty I personally feel it will do no harm installing this tape if you install it correctly, most warrantees are only for one year so if you are worried about that I would wait one year after purchasing a new trailer to do it. If I had to do it all over again I would have done this on the day I brought it home from the dealer, it would be easier to install with a nice clean roof and joint sealant. I feel it will outlast the roof, it still looks like the day I installed it.

    Thank you for the great video. One question I’ve searched for and cannot find. I’m planning to reseal my entire roof using either Liquid Rubber or a similar product. I’m debating if I should seal the roof first and then apply EternaBond tape or tape it first and then apply the liquid rubber up to the tape edge.

      You're welcome and thanks for watching and your question. I must be honest, I'm really sure how coating products stick to EternaBond Tape or how Eterna Bond would stick to coatings. I would recommend you contact Eterna Bond and ask them and the company that supplies or manufacture the coating to ask them for some correct answers. I've watched lots of videos on UA-cam where people have applied coatings over Eterna Bond but have not seen follow up videos to see how it holds up.
      Here's a few videos you can watch that may be helpful:
      ua-cam.com/video/40qB7W2jzk4/v-deo.htmlsi=CwifgH0dqeyjIbEy
      ua-cam.com/video/bOXUsgqJPWQ/v-deo.htmlsi=-SqrXspXyjCCyuNM
      Here's what another viewer asked similar to yours and my answer:
      Viewer - "You did a fantastic job on that roof. I'm in the process of doing mine now and learned a few tricks. After taping with the Eternabond I will use a product call Tropi-cool to coat the TPO in between the tape. Would go over everything but from what I've been reading the coating will not adhere to the tape."
      My Reply - "Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment and share what you are doing. You're going to be really happy you taped the roof like so many others have done. I've also heard that Tropi-Cool will not stick to the tape so your plan should work."

    Wow that was super detailed and it looks great! One question...what happens when you need to replace a fan, ac, or other roof mounted appliances? How do you remove the eternobond tape?? Looks so permanent

    • @thetraveltrailerguy
      @thetraveltrailerguy  Рік тому

    I painted our propane tank cover as well, BUT I painted ours white because as our RV is stored parked nose towards the sunset down here in middle GA, the sun was (in my opinion) overheating the propane tanks under that black, heat absorbing tank cover, and it's not even the peak of summer but the propane tanks were at 125°F which puts the internal pressures of the propane at over 225 PSI, which I am not comfortable with.
    Excellent job with the EternaBond project.

    I think this a great idea. I am new to the maintenance and sealing my roof. Since the Eternabond is so hard to get up, how would you take it up if you need to replace something on your rood? Thank you

    • @thetraveltrailerguy
      @thetraveltrailerguy  2 місяці тому

      Thank you for watching and your question.

Lets say the skylight needed to be replaced I would simply cut the tape with a utility knife along the edge of the skylight being careful not cut the roofing material (if the roofing material did get cut by accident I wouldn't worry) I would then unscrew and remove the skylight and reinstall another one, then reapply Dicor self leveling sealant around teh edge and on the screw heads, let it dry for 30 days, then reapply tape over the skylight screws and the tape that I had to leave on the roof. If the weather is between 50 and 70 Degrees Fahrenheit, the Dicor Self Leveling Lap Sealant takes 5 minutes to skin over and is waterproof after 4 hours. After 48 hours, the sealant is about 80% cured. It can take up to 30 days to cure to 100% - dicorproducts.com/faq/

    • @thetraveltrailerguy
      @thetraveltrailerguy  2 роки тому

      Thank you David. So I didn't tape around the air conditioner because they way it's sealed there is a rubber seal located under the unit that is sandwiched between the A/C unit and the roof membrane. This makes a great seal. I think I show this seal in this video - ua-cam.com/video/EWzYtLOwkdY/v-deo.html

    I wonder if this would work on my 70's Shasta roof it's metal

    • @thetraveltrailerguy
      @thetraveltrailerguy  4 місяці тому

      Here's what I found on the internet, I hope this helps -
      "Yes, EternaBond can stick to metal. EternaBond is a bonding tape that can adhere to almost any surface, including metal, brick, wood, rubber, stucco, vinyl, and roofing materials. EternaBond AlumiBond Waterproofing is a type of EternaBond that can be used to cover seams on aluminum or other metals."
      Here are some tips for using EternaBond:
      * Clean the surface: Use acetone or laquer thinner to degrease the area.
      * Use EternaPrime: This product can be used on dirty or dusty surfaces, or when the installation temperature is below 40°F.
      * Push harder if there is metal: If you apply EternaBond over metal, you can push harder.
      * Remove old material with a heat gun: If you clean the EternaBond first, it will stick to itself.
      * EternaBond is flexible down to -70°F, but it can sag above 250°F. It's also environmentally friendly and has a shelf life of more than five years.

      Here's the Dicor drying information I found on their website.
      Dicor drying times vary depending on the product and weather conditions:
      Lap sealant
      In 50-70° F weather, Dicor lap sealant skins over in about five minutes, becomes waterproof in about four hours, cures 80% in 48 hours, and cures 100% in 30 days.
      Self-leveling ultra sealant
      In 50-70° F weather, Dicor self-leveling ultra sealant skins over in about 30 minutes, becomes tack free in less than an hour, dries in about two hours, and cures 100% in several days.

    How's the tape on the roof holding up?

    • @thetraveltrailerguy
      @thetraveltrailerguy  2 роки тому

      Great Question, it's been a year now since I applied the tape and it still looks like new and is really stuck down. I have followed a few other people on UA-cam that have done this and have had it on their roof for years and its holding up great for them.
      Here's some information Eterna Bond has out there on their tape:
      How long does EternaBond® last?
      Because EternaBond® is made using MicroSealant Technology®, depending on surrounding conditions, EternaBond® has an estimated life expectancy of 18-35 years if applied correctly. The "pre-activated" shelf life of EternaBond®, stored correctly, is 5 years!

    Thorough job Michael - I'm on mini lite site on FB your on - ole roofer/carpenter many years so did many roofs plus commercial rubber roofs. We only used Sika brand - way more UV protectant over time vs Dicor. Going to recaulk my roof probably later this summer but be using Sika 715 self leveling. Love your videos - so helpful - thanks

      Your welcome Harry, thanks so much for watching, comment, and advice :) I've heard about the Sika brand but have never used it. From what I have heard form others its a lot better than Dicor. When you rechalk your roof will you be removing all the other sealant first? Is this what you use? amzn.to/3qDcdAK What FB group are you in?

    Good choice sealing your roof with bulletproof eternabond. Their primer is a great product. It makes the surface tacky but their cleaner is a waste of money. Blue dawn does just as good of a job.
