When I did car audio for 15 year I used 4" x 3" doubled up thick house carpet(1yrd from Home Depot). Spent a lot of time kneeing down into cars/truck. Helps when you go from knee's to laying down on your side. Hate to think how much worse my knee's/legs would be today if I did not do this back in the day. Still used knee pads depending on the type of work.
We just finished our camper roof using commercial TPO. She covered almost every point here with great advice. I wish I had watched this video before I started-some things I still learn the hard way at 61!
I enjoyed your video. Good Job. i would recommend taking a hole punch and at the end of your x cuts on the vents and sky light and rounding out the end of the cut. Keeps the end of the x from tearing/ running up..
So Awesome you get to work with you Dad. From an old crippled up floor man, please use knee pads 🙏. I'm so restricted from doing things I enjoy and I still wore them most days. In the words of my surgeon, your knees aren't made to walk on lol

Also, a small piece of advice, use a heat gun to soften the sealants. A small amount of heat goes ALONG way towards making that job so much easier. I know, I’ve done it so many times, it just scrapes right up with half the effort lol.
Kudos to you for doing all this work by yourself...thanks so much for sharing your adventure. Watching you on your knees for such a long time vicariously made my knees ache.!
First off great job. You are such a hard worker! and as a father, I would be so proud of my daughter if she worked like you! I have referenced this video for my roof repair and replacement on my small wolf pup. I ordered the kit off of Amazon. My only complaint is that the roof came folded up. I have it unfolded, sitting out in the sun right now to try and help soften it up and smooth out some of the creases from it being folded. Do you have any other recommendations or advice on how to get the creases out ? I'm repairing my camper inside of a closed building, but i'm considering pulling it out and laying the membrane over the roof like you did, in the sun to help get some of the creases out also..
They do come folded up. You can buy it directly from recpro and have the option to ship it rolled but it’s super expensive. I typically roll it out when I get it and roll it back up with a 2x4 inside. Sitting in the sun will do wonders for the creases when you lay it out on the roof!

How do you feel about on the floor of a rv ....like in the corners of a slide out of a 5th wheel instead of replacing the whole thing ...the rest of that part of it is good . Save money save time 😊 thank you 😊
QUESTION?? Love Ur informative videos!! I'm completing full renovation of my "98 C class RV and just replaced 100% of roof w/OSB sheets. What/Who do U recommend for a seam tape, before I glue new TPO membrane?? And would U recommend sanding the osb edges slightly to take the square edges off??? TIP for rusted screws/holes: I plug the holes w/ plastic zip ties and cut them. Now the new screws will have some bite when I re-insert!?!?
Hello great just wanted to know how thick is the pvc mambarine and the wood I'll send u a pic inside my caravan which am doing the roof and the celling and the problem am based overseas and there's not much materials 2 work with here ur kind help and advice will b appreciated.
I hate dealing with the old glue so I usually lay 1/8 luan down on top before doing a new skin,(plus I only wear flip flops so they stick then break) but like you said everyone has there way. So how bad was dad hating the cleaning butyl off the extrusions ? I always dread that part cuz I'm in fl. So it's always tacky
Hahaha he was loving it. I hate cleaning and prepping…he sat in his chair and cleaned for hours, which meant more time on the roof for me. Perfect team, I’d say 😂
@fallenintocamping oh I agree if I can get somebody else to do it I'm all for it. Sore fingertips aren't fun but those plastic scrapers at harbor freight do pretty well
Love the video. Could you share with roof membrane and glue you used? I am in the midst of replacing my roof and don't want to order the wrong material.
I used the 8.5’ wide PVC kit from recpro. They sell them in all different lengths! I’ll link the amazon supplies below. If you order directly from recpro, it’s usually cheaper than amazon. You can use the code FALLEN2CAMP for 5% off if you would like!
Thank you for posting these how to videos! I was able to redo my camper roof due to water damage because of your detailed videos. I purchased everything from your links as well. All we have left to do is lap seal everything. I was wondering, do you tear off extra butyl tape squeeze out from around the vents, or do you just lap seal over it? Thank you again!!
That’s so great to hear! If it’s a little bit I usually leave it. If it’s a lot, I clean it up. It’s just more lap sealant to use if you leave it squeezed out, because it needs to completely cover the excess butyl tape.
I’m still here! I’ve been working on a new client trailer. It’s SO hard to work, be a mom, and edit footage every day. I’m uploading a new video now though!
My Bantam Trail lite roof bowed in allowing water in. The sides have begun to delaminate too. Flooring was already soft before this started. What are my options?
I just recently bought a project camper it’s only a 18 foot, but I discovered it’s in really bad shape roof leaks floor rot wall delaminated, what I’m scared of is mold , and the floor is the one that has the foam insulation sandwiched between thin paneling, overwhelming to look at , what do you do with the mold, should I just trash it and make a car hauler?😊
After putting on new roof membrane, what’s your recommendation for having to store the RV outside in Montana? Tarp it, RV canvas cover. Thanks in advance
Thank you for the awesome video. Carpenter here but new to RV roofs and I'm doing my first right now. The stickiness after pulling the old membrane is bad! All the debris is getting in it (I have sheets and holes to replace.) I'm wondering if you have a good method for cleaning what gets in the sticky stuff? I'm at the point of I'm about to replace every sheet because I'm scared ill have a sharp piece of wood sticking up now and ruin the new roof! Any suggestions??
The struggle is real…I try to minimize the amount of dirt that gets on the roof. If you noticed I cut the roof in sections and tried to pull it in a way that all of the debris gets scooped up with the membrane. But, if you didn’t do that, it’s tough. Obviously you want to make your roof as clean as possible. An air compressor can help blow some of the yuck off. A little dirt is okay. Definitely don’t want anything sticking up, but you can always lightly sand the rough spots. Every roof will be sticky, so don’t think it’s abnormal! I actually save my old shoes and use them for replacing roofs just to throw them away later…the old glue will stick to your shoes and will never come off 😂
Heather any reason why you dont have scaffold for such a big job ??? To me it would be a nice storage area for tools materials and a step off point . second question .Henry's rubber roof coating any experience with that product ? thanks for sharing i love watching fix it videos then tweek them to my projects .I acually have access to rubber rolls and been contemplating useing that after doing a apartment deck with it 3 yrs ago , still like new and any repairs are just like patching a inner tube tire with the same glue.
Do you have a how to for ceiling and I guess it's vinyl roof. I'm trying to do this by myself. It has atleast 1 leak and I pull down 1 of the panels so far and I'm going to need to replace several of the wood stuff(tresses) but I'm also going to need to replace the roof cause I can feel the soft roof
I too have taken your lead and ordered a new roof from RecPro. I got th PVC membrane and all the glue and sealer needed. I will do it myself, but if you are up to it, would love for you to come and do it! Where are you located?
The one I use to staple the roof skin to the inside of the trailer and to tack the skin to the side is just a small pneumatic staple gun from harbor freight. I tried to find the link but maybe they don’t sell it anymore, it was literally like $20. I use 1/4 inch staples with it!
Question: Why did you put the glue coat only on the roof and not on the membrane also (glue on booth pieces) ? I think the glue manufacturer suggest to put on both . Thanks for this excellent video.
I think the double-glue recommendation is only for situations where both surfaces are non-porous (like if you were putting PVC over aluminum). Since her roof base is wood, it is porous and only the PVC is non-porous, so she only needed one layer of glue.
I was told you need to put new wood over the old wood so the glue for the TPO will adhere. They said the glue needs to soak into the wood and the glue doesn’t stick to old glue. So I am told I need to put a underlayment over the old wood. Thoughts?
Never heard of that before. Even the RV techs that I know don’t replace the decking unless it’s rotten. Seems like extra unnecessary work to me, but each person can have their own preference on how it’s done.
Saw your remodel video for first time with my wife, love it and started the rest of them. Many thanks for putting us on to RecPro. Was there an affiliate link for you? We picked out a stove but will wait to hear back
Love your videos. Thank you for the complete explanation. I also was wondering which rv kit you ordered and used for this particular job. Recpro has so many kits available and is a little confusing. Thanks again.
I have a 20 ft Travel Trailer with damage roof and I am looking for a place to rebuilt the entire roof. Will you do this job? I am located in California. I like the way you repair it and very thorough with great skill and practices. Thank youl.
I know this isn't a new video. But I'm restoring a old 80's model camper trailer with metal siding. Is the roof skin the same on it? Or did it change to this later?
If I own my 5th wheel outright and replace the roof myself vs using insurance/rv repair biz, will I lose value in my trailer when I go to trade/sell it? Also, how long from start to finish did this take you and your dad? Thx!
Wonderful video! I'm thinking I may need to do this to my unit soonish. I have a question though, what's your opinion on using RecPro's fiberglass/filon siding/roofing on the roof instead of their rubber roofing? Would it offer any benefits as far as strength goes, or do you think it would be so hard to install it wouldn't be worth it?
Great video. I havea soft spot on my roof. About 16" from the front molding. Could I cut the current membrane at 24", peel it back: replace the plywood, and use eternal bond to repair the cut in the membrane? Thoughts?
I would not do that. Eternabond is terrible, and there’s not really a good way to join a spot that’s been cut from the roof. If you don’t want to replace the whole membrane, I would suggest peeling it back and regluing after. It won’t look particularly pretty but it’s better than having a seam on your roof.
So need your help here: I’ve started this very project on my Travel Trailer, and thank you for the recommendation for RecPro!! but I’ve noticed that the old EDPM glue is very stuck on the good OSB, and there’s no way to get it to come off. Will this glue end up ruining the new PVC or new Glue when I roll it on?? It’s extra gummy and flexible AND STICKY, and since I don’t have the ability to by 5 more sheets, I’m kind panicking about it. Hoping to finish the whole job in 3 more days. Any help much appreciated! As is your videos!
It will be fine. Just try not to get a bunch of dirt in the sticky part. There’s really no way around it being sticky unless you replace all of the decking, which I don’t do unless it has water damage!
Great question! The roof will shrink a little bit with the heat and wear, so I’m not really worried about small wrinkles. I try not to have many, but sometimes with the temperature outside (ie too hot or cold), it happens. It’s sealed, so even if it doesn’t shrink and lay flat (it did, I only know that because this is my dad’s roof 😂), it would still be waterproof unless it was punctured.

I actually save my old shoes and use them for replacing roofs just to throw them away later…the old glue will stick to your shoes and will never come off 😂
Hello I was wondering what do you think about painting the outside of an rv and what paint you should use
If you have water damage on roof, walls, floor do you have to have roof off to replace walls?
Do you have a how to for ceiling and I guess it's vinyl roof. I'm trying to do this by myself. It has atleast 1 leak and I pull down 1 of the panels so far and I'm going to need to replace several of the wood stuff(tresses) but I'm also going to need to replace the roof cause I can feel the soft roof
I too have taken your lead and ordered a new roof from RecPro. I got th PVC membrane and all the glue and sealer needed. I will do it myself, but if you are up to it, would love for you to come and do it! Where are you located?
I am currently not taking on any new clients, I’m sorry! I am based in Raleigh nc!
@@fallenintocamping I'll fly you up!!!
Very informative! What type of staple gun do you use? Thank you.
The one I use to staple the roof skin to the inside of the trailer and to tack the skin to the side is just a small pneumatic staple gun from harbor freight. I tried to find the link but maybe they don’t sell it anymore, it was literally like $20. I use 1/4 inch staples with it!
@@fallenintocamping Thank you!
A+ job. Great tips. Thank you
Question: Why did you put the glue coat only on the roof and not on the membrane also (glue on booth pieces) ? I think the glue manufacturer suggest to put on both . Thanks for this excellent video.
I think the double-glue recommendation is only for situations where both surfaces are non-porous (like if you were putting PVC over aluminum). Since her roof base is wood, it is porous and only the PVC is non-porous, so she only needed one layer of glue.
@@amyhittlet1411 Hi, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for taking the time to answer me. Have a magical day ☀
I was told you need to put new wood over the old wood so the glue for the TPO will adhere.
Sprinkle corn starch on the roof and brush it around after you pull up the membrane. No more sticky roof.
You ever replace a Winnabego fiberglass roof with the PVC that you like?
Great video... when I tore off my old roof, it left a lot of black rubber dust... do I need to clean that up??
I would clean off as much as you can. Just leaves a cleaner slate for the glue to adhere to
Another video suggested Luan, but looks like your dad just Brushed the roof off, and was good, is that right.
Saw your remodel video for first time with my wife, love it and started the rest of them. Many thanks for putting us on to RecPro. Was there an affiliate link for you? We picked out a stove but will wait to hear back
Thank you so much! My code is MNIMXX3 for 5% off. I get I think 2-3% of the discount directly!
Love your videos.
Thank you for the complete explanation.
I also was wondering which rv kit you ordered and used for this particular job.
Recpro has so many kits available and is a little confusing.
Thanks again.
Sister, can you please make a video about installing an electric slide-out hydraulic? I can't find any videos about it on the UA-cam. God bless!
would you like to get some nice outdoor lights?
why dont you back butter the tpo rubber? Could that be why you have so much glue left over?
I have a 20 ft Travel Trailer with damage roof and I am looking for a place to rebuilt the entire roof. Will you do this job? I am located in California. I like the way you repair it and very thorough with great skill and practices. Thank youl.
I’m in NC, so probably not possible all the way in California ☹️
I know this isn't a new video. But I'm restoring a old 80's model camper trailer with metal siding. Is the roof skin the same on it? Or did it change to this later?
Most older campers have an aluminum roof. Have you looked to see what it looks like up there yet?
@@fallenintocamping Attempted to it was covered in a thick splotchy coat of some sort of sealant. I'll check it closer tomorrow.
Question. Does a 35’ fifth wheel mean you need a 35’ membrane?
You do excellent work. I wish I could get you to do my camper.
Question where can we get the metal vent cover?.
I’m sure Amazon, but I’ll ask my dad and let you know!
Just found them on Amazon-search for mobile home plumbing vent and it comes up!
@@fallenintocamping awesome Heather, thank you. I really appreciate it 😊.
How long did the roof replacement take and have your used fiberglass as a roof replacement before?
Can you just do a small section if you just need one wood panel replaced that got water.
If its on a corner, it’s possible to peel that section up and glue it back down, but I wouldn’t do it if it’s a pretty large area
I noticed you had a few wrinkles, like around the skylight. Will that be a problem at some time?
Great question! The roof will shrink a little bit with the heat and wear, so I’m not really worried about small wrinkles. I try not to have many, but sometimes with the temperature outside (ie too hot or cold), it happens. It’s sealed, so even if it doesn’t shrink and lay flat (it did, I only know that because this is my dad’s roof 😂), it would still be waterproof unless it was punctured.
@@fallenintocamping is there a chance for mold or mildew in those areas?
Wish I could hire you to do mine!
