When possible I try to avoid using any products that are used in the RV industry. For me I use and recommend Sika 221 for exterior sealant applications. Warning the product has a thick viscosity even in warm temps. I apply it with a battery powered caulk gun but you can use a traditional caulk gun it just takes longer.

    • @jimb7216

100% agree. I feel a lot of “RV specific” products are inferior and there to take your money. I use OSI Quad also with a battery caulk gun. I would also never use silicone anything.

I have used GE Advanced Silicone on my 2017 travel trailer to seal around the window frames, door frames, over the screws holding the aluminum molding around the corners and many other places around the RV that could pose a problem. I call it the Super Glue of silicones. It is tough, sticks exceptionally well and cures harder than simple silicones. No mildew, no green slime, does not attract dirt like regular silicone. I swear by it. I stay away from all those RV "professional" sealants. I use what builders, plumbers and contractors use. Same with marine sealants. They are marine for a reason. Camco butyl tape? NO! I use MARINE butyl tape. The ONLY RV waterproofing sealing tape i use is ETERNABOND. Most RV dedicated products cost more and either not as good or almost as good as what contractors use. But if you do your research you'll find better and less expensive products that are far superior to RV dedicated crap! IMHO

Lexel is not an “RV” sealant. It’s been around for years in the construction industry. It has so many uses indoor and outdoor. It only makes sense to use this to seal an rv because you can reseal over this stuff unlike silicone which requires you remove it. No one likes to do that job, it’s a huge pain in the rear. So for that reason alone I went with Lexel.

After watching your video, I was thinking this doesn't look too bad. I'm a new RV Owner a 2015 Creekside that has never had any maintenance sealant on the roof or the sides done to it. I see now why you opened with you hate this job and that you can't stand doing it. It's time consuming, messy, tedious and takes skill not to make a big mess out of things. I have already replaced fans, shocks, tires and the grey water tank that had me remove and replaced the underbelly and now I am almost done with the sealant project. Thanks for all your videos!

Silicone sucks on rvs. Especially in northern climates where the temps fo from +30 celcius to -30 Celsius. Used butyl sealant, lasts a couple seasons, but everyone in the industry here swears by geocel. Trying it this year to re seal our front window. Works really well.

Today is November 23, 2024: I resealed my RV joints in May of this year using Proflex white color. Today, I was inspecting the joints, just 6 months past installation and the joints are very hard, cracking, and yellowed. In some areas I find the adhesive qualities are non-existent. I was disappointed. I am glad I saw this video to confirm my observations. I will look into replacing the sealant with the Lexel product on a “as needed basis”. I look forward to you observations also. Thank you for what you do. Peace and God Bless. Michael(Florida).

Great video. I'm about to try Lexel on my '97 Lance overhead camper. Still trying to pin down the appropriate sealant for the fixtures on the aluminum roof. My understanding is that self-leveling Dicor is not ideal for aluminum.
While replacing incandescent exterior lights I tried the Acrysol and it worked ok but went with Rapid Remover @ $70/gallon and found it to work as well or better. I did use a heat gun to warm the silicone and aluminum surface which eased the removal as well (temps in the low 40s).

Great video - and EVERYTHING IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE - glad you and Dustin got together to share views. I also understand that you do not share the same opinion of Eternabond - except you both agree it is good for repairs - I think everyone does. I'm going with your concept on this - and do the full seal route. Heck, I'm 71, need the leverage of not working any more than necessary on the roof - and if it does last 28-35 years, I might only need to do this twice;-) THANKS FOR ALL OF THE INFO!

ello everyone, I'm finding myself watching this due to my 2022 Coachman Spirit Lite. I found my carpet was wet on the slide out. I removed the seats and wooden covers and found it was wet mainly in against the wall. I looked out outside and found some caulking that had cracked and separated. My main question is that now that it's now 2025, is there anything new out there that has been developed that's even better than Lexcel?
As a stop gap I've just sealed it with regular silicon. I'll be ordering the correct stuff and doing it right in a couple of weeks but what does every recommend to use now.
Thank you so very much for these videos. they sure come in handy.

DO NOT USE LEXEL! Based on the recommendation of others, I used Lexel. It began failing almost immediately. Frustrated, I reached out to the manufacturer, Sashco. I was finally put in contact with Charis Babcock and after a few emails, and sending pictures, Charis reached out to Sashco's R&D and had this response.
"Based on the photos, they agreed with what I discussed with you yesterday - the joint size is simply too small. It would be best to widen all joints to a minimum of 1/4", and 3/8" is even better. An RV sees even more movement than a home because of all of the bumps and vibration on the road. This is going to stress any sealant - ours or anyone else's - to the max."
Widen all joints to 1/4" or 3/8" in order to get the product to work? Perhaps I wont do that.
I had a near 100% failure within 3 months. They sent me a bunch of tubes as an apology and replacement. I still have 'em if you want 'em

I am in the middle of resealing a shuttle bus that I am converting, using Lexel. It was recommended to me by my dad who has used it on his full-time camper trailer for 8+ years.
I'm happy with the ease of application and the areas that have cured already! I applied some fresh yesterday to an area that had quite a bad leak at a major seam - it rained only a few hours later, the leaky spot was bone-dry. Still waiting for full cure of course.
Are there any problems that can arise from applying a larger bead than strictly necessary, or is it mostly a cosmetic choice?

Liberty Coach. They even warranty squeeks and rattles for life for the original owner. Second I think is Coach House, they only build one piece fiberglass RVs. No not one piece roof, the entire body. Think of it as like a boat turned upside down and mounted to a chassis. No seams = no leaks.

Yes I’m still a fan. Me and Dustin agree to disagree on that subject.
EternaBond stays flexible for the life of the RV (up to 35 years). It also stands up to testing of high-pressure water jets without having to reseal the sealant tape.
In addition to being reliable, this sealant tape is UV-stable, sag-resistant and permanently flexible. Other features include:
Life expectancy of over 25 years
      15 year warranty
Application Temperature Range: 40 degrees F to 150 degrees F
Service Temperature Range: -40 degrees F to 212 degrees F

Pro tip, use a little soapy water in a spray bottle or foaming glass cleaner to tool out the new sealent.

I'm curious if anyone is willing to share costs for a dealer full reseal on a large fifth wheel (we have 2020 GD Solitude 380fl).

Here is a link to Dustin’s shops webpage. There are some quotes on that page for prices to get that job done. Might give you a ball park cost.

Why not use urethane? The stuff lasts over 50 years.

One reason I got a Brinkley is to avoid doing this. The way they seal the RV requires no caulking. Here is a good video on products to remove caulk. Caulk be gone won the battle. You put that on the caulk and it comes off easy. ua-cam.com/video/JY7cPZtu6lE/v-deo.html

“Eternabond” tape…no way, don’t want the RV looking awful. Nobody can see the roof lol

Dude you cut off the smart guy. Repeating everything doesn't help, it just makes the video long and boring.
