      soon we're going to have to watch out for people that actually go into the games code and optimize the code to get better performance in their run there are many things in the mario 64 code that can be slightly optimized that would greatly increase the ability of players to fake a speed run and all it would take us someone to just literally optimize the code surrounding mario's jumping land and it would be such a miniscule change that it would be super hard to detect especially if you optimize the collision

    At that 40 Minutes mark when he said that the runs is over he shortly switched his timer to compairison against his own PB and saw that it was still green. Until then he was talking to chat every now and then, but for the rest of the run he was completely locked in and didn't say a single word until his outbreak at the end. His mental strenght and his ability to fully focus and not let the nerves touch him is amazing.

      I don't think Summoning Salt would cover multiple categories in one video, since he goes extremely in depth with strategy. Covering the 120 star category in the level of detail he does alone would probably be a 90 minute video. Also, he covers progression and the evolution of runs over time more than specific achievements.

      Yep. I've been around since the beginning of speedrunning. Atleast sda... I can attest that mario 64 is the gold standard and that any achievement made in modern times is noteworthy. This game is beyond optimized. 2nd place would be goldeneye and maybe goldeneye could take first idk.. its 2 different types of execution imo.

      @FainTMako DOOM has to be pretty high up there, too, right? DOOM speedrunning developed before the N64 was even released. Not sure how active the community is compared to those games, but it was easier to share demos.

    • @AtomicArtumas
      @AtomicArtumas 20 днів тому

      Yeah, it's definitely considered by the majority easy top 5 most prestigious, probably top 3 almost universally. I'm honestly not sure which of the big ones would actually be generally considered #1, as it's very highly subjective in many ways, but it's not like there's really that much of a difference between all the top 10 spots really.
      That said, while due to competition I'd say it's "easily one of the most prestigious", that there are definitely a lot of less popular games that are by far more impressive accomplishments, due to being way, way, WAY harder of runs. Luckily a lot of them do get noticed here and there, but... yeah. There are some genuinely amazing speedrun accomplishments out there that are barely known by the public at large. (And then there's also challenge runs... like that one Ninja Gaiden accomplishment, that are just... yeah... When a theoretical concept ends up being proven possible by a TAS and then actually being accomplished by someone by complete accident and then leading to the complete and utter revolution of button mashing tech... like... I don't care if it ain't a speedrun, stuff like that will always be ridiculously impressive. (Though I may be a bit biased there since I'm a challenge runner myself...))

Back in the 90’s and early 00’s old games were given up on by the majority of players because newer and better stuff was coming out each year, but once games got to the level they’ve been for 15 years, many people have gone back through the catalogs and found joy playing old games. I couldn’t be happier about this!

      @@davidjsaul Its... definitely not about that. Thats you projecting your discomfort with diversity on to the industry.
      It's much more about every game being developed as a graphics benchmark and immense trailer bait. Creativity and longer development cycles are gone in the triple a space, not to mention workers are treated as less than dirt. Video Games are the biggest media franchise out there now so of course souless corporate bigwigs are out there diluting the creativity and upping productivity at the cost of game quality. Happens with all things that become mainstream. Meanwhile we keep getting games that just say 'corporation bad' because those writers are just... projecting their frustrations unto their projects.
      Games like Celeste have nods to gender identity and sexuality. They are still wildly successful. It only becomes a problem when said diversity is about meeting business quotas and isnt part of the writers vision/narrative. Even then, it very rarely detracts from a game, it just doesnt add to it either.

      @@mlg_kyle9241 That was my first thought when I started watching the video, but then Karl went over how he'd _frequently_ mess up, but be able to recover after messing up. That's not something you do if you're cheating.
      Also, when playing a game, I often do worse and worse when I'm actually seriously trying... But if I'm failing anyway and I know I'm failing, sometimes I just stop caring because I _know_ it's over anyway... And then because I'm relaxed I just beat it and it's not nearly as hard anymore and I'm just confused because I was certain I'd have to start over.
      Brains are weird like that, and I can COMPLETELY believe that Andrew just stopped caring when he lost so much time near the start.. Then probably started caring a lot more when he did so well, but because he was doing so well he managed (somehow) to regulate his nerves based on the 'not caring' calm?
      I don't know, I'm just making stuff up that sounds plausible, but I do know we tend to keep doing what we've been doing.. So if he managed to figure out how to calm down from being stressed, maybe he learned how to do that without failing first?
