This movie came out the same year as Iron Man and one year after Transformers, both of those films still look great today and THIS just looks like absolute garbage. Doug Walker wasn't kidding in his Bum review when he said everything just looked like candy XD
I think they made this film at the time to fully display the dynamics of widescreen HD television sets. The world had just switched from tube TVs to that all of a sudden. Then everyone started throwing out their tube TVs to properly be able to watch movies like this at home. I love you guys and you have brought me belly laughs throughout the years every since I first looked up a Bill & Ted 3 review. Fantastic. Much love
Fun Fact: Rain, the koren pop artist who played Tajo gets a lead role in his second feature Ninja Assassin a year later, and Ben Miles also appeared. 😁
15 years prior, Korey reviewed this on Spill and gave this a matinee with Cyrus, Leon (the character Martin Thomas voiced on Spill) gave it a matinee and Carlyle gave it a Full Price.
Uh oh, my favorite movie of all time got a Bad Movie Review! I mean, it may be well-deserved, it's not a perfect films by any means, but let's see what happens! Edit: I'm surprised they enjoyed Spritle's scenes that much. I always found his scenes to be the weakest point of the movie, especially when they interrupt such well-put-together scenes. Edit 2: Y'know man, I was on your side. And then you said the movie has no art direction. The spiratic colors are intentional, they are meant to reflect more modern anime influences. I'm also not really seeing TRON here. Edit 3: Now we're saying the cross-country race gave off Wacky Races vibes, even though racers with decked out gimmick cars going up against the Mach 5 was in the original anime? Edit 4: I disagree about the length of the movie; I think it used up it's time very well, and the pacing is set a such a break-neck speed, that I never really notice the time dragging on. Edit 5: 48:00 They were huge fans of the anime, and talked about their influences character-wise throughout production, the hell are you talking about? Edit 6: 50:00 As a kid who watched this movie, I was captivated the whole time the first time saw it. And then the second time I saw it, and then the hundreds of other times I watched it on DVD. Edit 7: Please don't tell me you're about the use the most emotionally-charged and heart-wrenching scene in the move as an example against it, just because they flashed back a bit too much... (But you do have a point, this movie used flashbacks like a spacebar. Edit 8: Okay, we're saying the flashback's aren't necessary, but each one literally gives a major plot-point or relevance point to the current story. They all have a purpose. Edit 9: 54:12 That commentating, they are literally commentating, they are commentators. Edit 10, the finale: Overall, while I do agree with a majority of their points, that last 15 minute barrage of the most out-of-touch and wack takes really brought me down. And no mention of the OST throughout the whole video? Michael Ghicchiano was popping off for the entire 2 hours and 15 minutes here. I'll definitely mark this down as a rare Double Toasted L, but there total now is like 1 or 2 out of 140 for the year, so hey, they're still pretty based.
Thanks for saving me the time of actually watching this apparently trash video. This is apparently what happens when folks go into a film with a preconceived notion of what the film is, cemented in their mind.
I saw this in theatres and remember it being boring, visually overstimulating, but the casting was mostly ok, like Speed really looked the part. I'm still left with those opinions after watching this review, but at least now I know why it's so weird and oversaturated.
Honestly I appreciate how much heart they put in this movie, the action and racing is so much fun to watch. Imo it’s probably one of the best live action anime movies we’ve gotten.
Speed Racer was still in syndication as late as 1980 when I was in kindergarten. I LOVED this show...Racer X was sooooooo cool. I have never seen this movie...and I never will.
Speed Racer is a guilty pleasure of mine. I don't think it's a bad movie but I don't think it's on the scale of Ready Player One. Speed Racer is a favorite and I always get excited with the racing and music. I use to watch Speed Racer cartoons from videos at the library.
Wild that this is categorized as a “Bad Movie” worthy of being “roasted”. This movie has evolved to take on such a varied life after its release and initial reception. I think most cinephile circles online consider it to be one of the most underrated movies of the last decade plus. It’s been my personal favorite movie of all time for over a decade now, and I honestly just saw it for the first time on a big screen….in an arthouse theater! I think it’s a very important and truly singular movie. I’d even say it’s a masterpiece. But interesting that you guys are still stuck in 2008. 😂
@ROMMIX Have you tried re-watching it? The “overly busy visuals” are what make it so singular and such a groundbreaking, only-of-its-kind movie. Also, saying that they’re stuck in 2008 *is* justification, as the consensus then was that this was a “bad movie”, when, really, it was simply misunderstood. The consensus NOW is decidedly not negative or “bad”.
@ROMMIX well, then, I think your cinematic palate could do with some sharpening and might benefit from having its horizons expanded. There’s soooo much going on under the hood (pun intended) of this movie. And I’m so thankful it exists as it does. If every movie looked the same or utilized “realistic” CGI, the world be so much more worse off for it. 🤙🏻
I feel like the Wachowskis would rather be fashion designers or music video directors or in some other vocation that emphasizes style over substance. So many of their films when they're given complete freedom are a feast for the eyes - for better or worse - but the rest of the films tend to suffer by comparison.
This movie came out when I was like two so from my perspective this is speed racer to me, I enjoy the other shows as well but I’ve always had a hyper fixation on this movie. I own a collection of all the Diecast hot wheels and all 3 versions of the video game. I watch this movie religiously at least once a year. I’m personally in tune with this movie to the point where it starts to feel like a living breathing person to me. It’s incredible how polarizing everyone seems to feel about this enigma and even the tone of the movie itself is truly something to behold. it’s annoyingly satirical but it’s so heartfelt all the same.
It is not a full on BAD movie, it is just really disjointed, awkward and dumb. Really fun. Impressive at times. But dumb and very disjointed, all over the place. You guys had it right. Rain was the titular Taejo Togokahn in the film, and he also played in Ninja Assassin as Raizo (another movie you guys should absolutely review).
I love this movie. But I understand why people don’t like it. I always saw it as cheesy on purpose. Like when the punch is thrown at racer and grab it because it’s so slow. I thought it was hilarious. I completely understood the movie I was watching when that happened. I wish they would do without the sentimental stuff tho.
What makes it a bad movie is that it’s boring because it’s just random stuff like watching a wacky screensaver behind boring characters that were usually acting too serious. And that makes it the worst kind of bad movie. I’ll admit I only watched it one time years ago but all I remember is wanting it to end and never wanting to see it again.
Mathew Fox actually kinda cancelled himself. I can’t remember exactly what happened but everyone on Lost hated the guy and he punched a bus driver I think. After all that his career really stalled
Next bad movie roast should be the Gem movie. If you were a fan of the cartoon, the movie felt like it was giving you the finger throughout the whole runtime. Bombed so bad that it was pulled out of theaters in two weeks.
If they just have referenced Speed Racer for the film it would probably be a 60s period piece. The 08 is the culmination of everything that evolved from the OG anime while keeping the heart of the series which is (according to the OG Speed Racer VA Peter Fernandez) is "[Speed Racer] was created by children throughout the world - almost every boy and girl who has ever played with toy cars. By most of us.... Brr-the sound of engines we drove impossible courses around the floor..." (From the forward of Speed Racer 30th Anniversary Guide.) In other words, the imagination of Speed Racer's world is ever changing but the theme of family is always the same.
I loved watching the original Speed Racer back in the late 60s early 70s. I admit that I loved the Mach 5 but thought the car acrobatic team had the coolest cars!
I just look at that monkey and my mind automatically transfixes to Gordy from Nope. And I'm thinking everyone's going to die when he goes ape sh** on them all.😂
I'd say the whole 'green-screen movie' thing probably started with mid-90's Interactive Movie video games. '7th Guest', 'Wing Commander', 'Phantasmagoria'. Shit like that.
Oh hey! It's my all time favorite film! (I never thought you'd review it on Double Toasted since you reviewed it years ago in the show's previous incarnation.)
Tried watching this, when it first dropped on cable. Don’t think this was formatted for my brain, because I really couldn’t get into it. Despite Speed Racer being an extreme critical/commercial flop, I do recognize it’s ambition and am glad to know it found and has dedicated fans. Good to know some folks can get something out of this besides a headache.
Agreed. I always admire the Wachowskis for their attempts to craft unique cinema experiences but usually find their finished pieces to be disappointing. This one was beyond that. The story was so basic it might as well have been 22 minute tv show, the convoluted fluff used to make the basic story appear complex was worse than Shyamalan at his worst, and the visual style, while creative and accurate to the visuals of anime, also at times looked like Homer Simpson's website design in it's over-the-top gaudy hideousness. Like an After Effects whiz was fed a diet of only adderall, LSD, and Four Loko and given no direction but "make it look like 70's era anime using only 90's era clip art and 00's era flash animation styles." Yeah, not my cup of tea. But, I'd rather watch 100 unique disasters like this than the majority of studio mediocrity the studios push out every year.
Wow I have come full circle on Korey and Martin since the video that got me following you guys was the video review of this movie you guys did for Spill back in 08! Was really curious about this movie since my Dad was an old school fan of Speed Racer but the trailer made us both go “WTF? The Wachowski’s made this??” When looking for reviews and I found you guys and the rest is history. Glad to be a fan of your’s after all these years Korey!
Speed Racers biggest issue at the Box Office was being released the week after Iron Man and 2 weeks before Indiana Jones 4 that year. I was in of the few that was more hype for Speed that Iron Man originally
Honestly though, Waschowkis doing a mix mash of different generes, films and anime and throwing them in a blender with a million dollar budget and making a movie from the result is their signature brand.
Martin is right about main protagonists being too stoic and nearly blank slate. That's done intentionally in films to try and make the main focus lead relatable enough for movie goers to feel they can place themselves in the lead role of the movie. Though I'd rather all characters to have expressive personalities myself for entertaining purposes. They often don't relate that much to my own self comparison anyway.😅
I apologize if this was mentioned in the review, but Rain was given the opportunity to be a lead actor a year later in Ninja Assassin, a movie that was also not particularly well received. However, Rain himself prevents that movie from being a total loss due to his charisma.
I saw this movie once as a kid at a friends house and never watched it again. I honestly don’t remember the movie being this bat shit insane. The animation did not age very well especially for a movie that came out less than 20 years ago. I think I had some of the McDonalds toys from this movie as a kid but that’s about it really.
YOU KNOW WHEN I WAS A TEENAGER THEY BROUGHT BACK SPEED RACER CARTOON ON NICKTOONS, AT THE TIME I THOUGHT IT WAS SOME NEW ORIGINAL CARTOON, NOT A REMAKE
I always had a soft spot for this movie, It's mostly a fun time but by god the biggest problem it has is way too much spritle and chim chim. The movie just stops dead in it's tracks constantly to cut back to these characters just fucking around and it has almost nothing to do with the plot at large 90% of the time. Shave most of their scenes out and make some other strategic cuts and you could easily trim 30 minutes off this movie.
Not a big Speed Racer fan because it was before my time and I was more into DBZ if I was watching anything anime when I was young but I feel like the movie was too wacky and more cartoon-y than the show ever was. From what I've seen from the show, despite the monkey member of the pit crew/family, it was pretty much played straight and more action/drama than comedy. The Wachowski's seemed like they only saw a cartoon and wanted to make a more light-hearted Matrix.
I'm surprised y'all didn't mention how insane the 1960s cartoon version of Speed Racer was. Like Speed literally had a gun and just started winging it like no tomorrow 😭😭
This movie has some of the coolest visual effects ever put to film. It predates a lot of the live-action-anime techniques later used in Scott Pilgrim.

This movie came out the same year as Iron Man and one year after Transformers, both of those films still look great today and THIS just looks like absolute garbage. Doug Walker wasn't kidding in his Bum review when he said everything just looked like candy XD
Tron legacy came out 2 years after this and it looks like it was made a decade apart
Fantastic.
Much love
Enjoyed your Spill review back in 2008.
Would love to see this film on 4K one day.
Fun Fact:
Rain, the koren pop artist who played Tajo gets a lead role in his second feature Ninja Assassin a year later, and Ben Miles also appeared. 😁
I remember seeing this movie for 2 reasons. Speed Racer and Rain 😄
This movie is far from being a bad movie, if anything this is a beautiful gem.
15 years prior, Korey reviewed this on Spill and gave this a matinee with Cyrus, Leon (the character Martin Thomas voiced on Spill) gave it a matinee and Carlyle gave it a Full Price.
I guess the members of the Legendary Band FISHBONE are Fans of SPEED RACER because the name of their Fifth Album is titled CHIM CHIM'S BAD-ASS REVENGE
This movie visually made me feel dizzy. I couldn't get through it all.
Honestly I appreciate how much heart they put in this movie, the action and racing is so much fun to watch. Imo it’s probably one of the best live action anime movies we’ve gotten.
“Tear that gizmo up” lol this man billy a fool
"This is not gone be a bad movie roast"
Title: Bad Movie Roast
Speed Racer was still in syndication as late as 1980 when I was in kindergarten. I LOVED this show...Racer X was sooooooo cool. I have never seen this movie...and I never will.
Speed racer was the greatest movie of all time you have to be some type of soulless animals to think this movie was bad
Speed Racer is a guilty pleasure of mine. I don't think it's a bad movie but I don't think it's on the scale of Ready Player One. Speed Racer is a favorite and I always get excited with the racing and music. I use to watch Speed Racer cartoons from videos at the library.
The story definitely has similar beats to RPO 😅
Wild that this is categorized as a “Bad Movie” worthy of being “roasted”. This movie has evolved to take on such a varied life after its release and initial reception. I think most cinephile circles online consider it to be one of the most underrated movies of the last decade plus. It’s been my personal favorite movie of all time for over a decade now, and I honestly just saw it for the first time on a big screen….in an arthouse theater! I think it’s a very important and truly singular movie. I’d even say it’s a masterpiece. But interesting that you guys are still stuck in 2008. 😂
Major props to comparing it to Fast X though! I was thinking that soooo many times while I was watching it in the theater the other night. 😂😂
@rommix0Bro thinks that new Marvel CGI is better than this
This was a fun movie👍
One of the most underrated films of 2008
@@chasehedges6775 agreed👍
Watching the cartoons in the 70s I was HIGHLY disappointed. That made it hard to see it for what it was on its own terms.
Speed Racer is how I discovered Korey Coleman 😄
I searched for a review & Spill came up. Down the rabbit hole I went ....🕳
The moment I saw the BAD MOVIE Quote, I was like WHAT THE FUCK ARE YA'LL TAKING ABOUT???!!!!
I still love the Geico Commercial of *Speed Racer* when the bridge was out and Trixie started talking about insurance.. 😂😂😂
And that's how he was in Ninja Assassin in the first place.
You got it right Korey, that is Rain. He played a Ninja in Ninja Assassin.
Judging by the thumbnail, Speed Racer is definitely on "Speed".
the spill review easter egg 2:33 man cant believe its been that long been watchin these guys since 07 highschoool
Mathew Fox actually kinda cancelled himself. I can’t remember exactly what happened but everyone on Lost hated the guy and he punched a bus driver I think. After all that his career really stalled
Ok Martin just kinda mentioned it but I don’t think it was a domestic
I remember watching it on Cartoon Network a lot as a kid.
Probably why I loved this film despite how silly it got LOL
This film is based on a dream that a rabid rabbit had after eating 1,000 hallucinogenic mushrooms.
I like this movie i feel like it captures the spirit of speed racer. It’s certainly better than speed racer the next generation.
I just look at that monkey and my mind automatically transfixes to Gordy from Nope. And I'm thinking everyone's going to die when he goes ape sh** on them all.😂
I keep forgetting Speed Racer was an anime 😂
I'd say the whole 'green-screen movie' thing probably started with mid-90's Interactive Movie video games. '7th Guest', 'Wing Commander', 'Phantasmagoria'. Shit like that.
Oh hey! It's my all time favorite film! (I never thought you'd review it on Double Toasted since you reviewed it years ago in the show's previous incarnation.)
I see Corey is bringing back movies from his The Spill days. 😏
The guy in the car with Racer Rex was Rain. Rain was a ninja in Ninja Assassin.
I've been waiting for this edited version of your new review of 'Speed Racer' (2008). I still remember the review that you did back in the Spill days.
These comments are exactly why Coleman was tip-toeing so gently through this review. He & even Martin said it wasn't a bad movie.
Like an After Effects whiz was fed a diet of only adderall, LSD, and Four Loko and given no direction but "make it look like 70's era anime using only 90's era clip art and 00's era flash animation styles."
Yeah, not my cup of tea.
Compared to Dragon Ball Evolution, this is a masterpiece.
Also, Attack of the Clones is more accurate as being described as the first of the digital / green-screen movies. That was in 2002.
@1:47 to @1:54 The roast. 😂😂😂😂
They have some crazy race tracks in the anime too.😄Every race event is death.
Speed Racers biggest issue at the Box Office was being released the week after Iron Man and 2 weeks before Indiana Jones 4 that year. I was in of the few that was more hype for Speed that Iron Man originally
Does Speed Racer in the film do his famous "oooohhhh!" When he's about to crash?
Honestly though, Waschowkis doing a mix mash of different generes, films and anime and throwing them in a blender with a million dollar budget and making a movie from the result is their signature brand.
Martin is right about main protagonists being too stoic and nearly blank slate. That's done intentionally in films to try and make the main focus lead relatable enough for movie goers to feel they can place themselves in the lead role of the movie. Though I'd rather all characters to have expressive personalities myself for entertaining purposes. They often don't relate that much to my own self comparison anyway.😅
I have soft spot for the 60s series. This movie was just weird
This movie will give you a seizure
Gotchu 👍🏾
Man, I remember the marketing for this movie was insane. Trailers, toys all of it. The Mach 6 was just everywhere.
I think we would all tear that Gizmo up lol 😂
He's going over that cliff..AAAAHHHHH
I apologize if this was mentioned in the review, but Rain was given the opportunity to be a lead actor a year later in Ninja Assassin, a movie that was also not particularly well received. However, Rain himself prevents that movie from being a total loss due to his charisma.
Arguably one the Wachowskis best movies
@rommix0 If its a cult for many who enjoy it, then it is the best, period.
Stop interpreting and projecting your dislike on others posts.
@rommix0 The Matrix is obviously their best lol but Speed Racer is definitely ONE of their best. The Matrix, Bound & Speed Racer are my top 3.
Please review Senseless with Marlon Wayans
Would love to see them cover the 1960 remake that came out after this: Astro Boy
I remember watching the original spill review
The thumbnail alone is worth the price of admission lmao this movie is... adrenaline. And oddly but satisfyingly, it has only gotten better over time.
Nacho Libre is what this movie hopes to be. Perfect amount of quirk without being too overwhelming.
I'm surprised y'all didn't mention how insane the 1960s cartoon version of Speed Racer was. Like Speed literally had a gun and just started winging it like no tomorrow 😭😭
