Me too, but only because I liked the cartoon. I knew this was nothing like the show, aggressively so at times, but my thought process was "Well, it's _an_ Inspector Gadget movie, even if it's not the one I wanted, so... I _guess_ I like it?"

Hey I feel you. This was my shit as a kid. The effects are the only things that aged well.
I agree 100%
Everything about this movie's marketing was so great to me as a kid--the theme song playing on Disney Channel, the Gadget toy you put together at McDonald's, the poster with the big mechanical "G"--and yet the actual movie couldn’t possibly live up to it.
Sounds very similar to…. Godzilla 1998 😂
The McDonalds toy!!!
I agree Jess Disney definitely did a great job marketing this movie despite not doing much marketing for DiC’s previous live action film with Disney “Meet The Deedles” with the most common trailer appearing on many Disney VHS’ at the time, extensive behind the scenes footage including a whole Movie Surfers episode thats included on the DVD, and of course one of the greatest Happy Meal toys ever conceived. So it showed Disney definitely cared about the movie… just not behind the scenes. 😈

Some people dont even realize that Matthew Broderick had on a very similar inspector gadget outfit, when he was standing by the car in the 80s film Ferris Bueller's Day Off 🚗🕵🏻♂️ 🏫
Ironically, that outfit looked more accurate to the cartoon's uniform than the movie's.
@@brandonspain12345 Right, it must have been legal reasons they didn't just go with that one there.
I can't lie, I was a kid when this came out and all the kids at my school went nuts for it. We all liked the cartoon and thought it was awesome that there was gonna be a live action Inspector Gadget movie.
I knew it sucked even back then
@@andim.8788 For me this movie is definitely on that list of things I loved as a kid that I can barely tolerate as an adult. Definitely not good
@@emmanuelsilvera8032Same here brother, this is one of my favorite movies this, and The Emperor's New Groove.
I know exactly what you mean. Just like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! We all love the cartoons so much and when 1990s had that Jim Hansen muppet movie of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles we were all excited! I was a junior high school kid in the 7th grade.
It was so bad it was good. 😂 I loved both the movies and the cartoon
Brendan Fraser dodged a bullet. He was offered this and George Of The Jungle, and went with the latter
And now he has an Oscar. Smart move Brendan.
@@PlusUltraAdrian In the meanwhile, Matthew Broderick haven't made a single Emmy award winning blockbuster ever since this film and Robert Emmerich's Godzilla.
tbf. George Of The Jungle wasn't any better. A lot of live action Disney movies in the 90s were not good.
@@rommix0 it was fine.. It's a very horny movie lol
@@rommix0They did a pretty good job with the live action Jungle Book in the early 90s. But that was an exception.
So happy you guys are reviewing this. This is the first movie that I worked on when I lived in Pittsburgh. I was a production assistant, location, scout catering you name it. Boy, it really sucked though not gonna lie.

1. Got to dive the director David Kellogg’s to a cover set on my second day working.. a set I found myself.. not only did he like it and use it he gave me his number to call if I was ever in Hollywood
2. Spent an entire 2 days on the bridge where they had the big gadget v gadget fight… also did a day where they flew helicopters through downtown Pittsburgh 50 feet off the ground
3. Spent a day entertaining Jolie fishers double/ stand in all day - she was really seeet
3. Protected the super powered gadget mobile at gadgets house for a day to make sure no one took pictures.. there was a crowd and Mathew Broderick walked by.. a lady yelled out” doesn’t Ferris beuller ever get a day off”… he stopped what he was doing, turned around and smiled” that’s new I’ve never heard that “ and laughed..
4. One of the days they were flying the helicopter’s low, there was a children’s performance going on in the alley of a playhouse that no one knew about, that was indicatly in the path of the choppers- they still had to stop the performance several times but they they brought Broderick over to hang out with the people there- he was freaky a nice guy and very professional
@Wyatt Powers this is fascinating. I'm in the process of trying to piece back together the original test screening cut of the movie - and would love to hear more about the production of the movie since so little of it has ever been shared/found.
@@SlayerSantiago oh wow that awesome- I’d love to see that cut.. I was just in Pittsburgh last year and one of my film friends gave me the script to it. Father receives electric shock therapy to his heart. Brenda:"Oh-no! Father's dead!" John is blown to bits in car explosion. Brenda:"I can bring him back with technological science!"
Penny Gadget, the original American Ninja: she waits until her uncle's back is turned, solves the crime, and creates a domino trail of destruction that ends with the villain being catapulted right at Gadget's feet. Done so expertly that even the Inspector thought he did it. No wonder in the movie, Penny was bewildered that she was sidelined for the finale.
Don't forget about the macguffin

I love the fan theory that says that Dr Claw was the original Inspector Gadget that was injured and driven mad when he came back and saw he was replaced
I used to love this movie as a kid.
I only saw this live action movie and it did had it's flaws
This movie is nothing like the cartoon. They show what Dr Claw looks like. In the cartoon you never see Dr Claw’s face.
Took me awhile to realize the voice actor for Dr Claw and the dog Brain was Frank Welker ( Megatron, Soundwave in Transformers, Fred in Scooby-Doo, Ray Stantz in Real Ghostbusters) the voice actor for Inspector Gadget was Don Adams ( Maxwell Smart in Get Smart, Check it out) and finally the voice actor for Penny was Cree Summer, the cool light skinned girl from the TV show A Different World.
When I was a kid, I had the hugest crush on Michelle Trachtenberg. Ever since I saw her in Harriet the Spy. She's still gorgeous to this day.
I ain't seen that movie ( harriet the spy ) in long azz time
Saw this in theaters and got all the McDonald’s Happy Meal toy pieces of Inspector Gadget too!
Those good and innocent days…
I have never seen a bigger downgrade for a villain than how this film portrayed Dr. Claw.
What about the villains from the Powerpuff girls 2016 reboot? A lot of villains got downgraded some were just cameos.
@Bearer of Bad news 13 Yeah, they sucked too. Not to mention, the new villains that they introduced weren't really all that memorable.
The Mandarin in Iron Man 3: Am I a joke to you?
@Firecraker J Yes. Yes you are, fake Mandarin. But at least the real Mandarin was introduced in a later MCU movie.

31:08 They filled him up like he was the dude in the Operation board game.
21:04 This is Dan Schneider's childhood right here.
I just watched Inspector Gadget and Inspector Gadget 2. Inspector Gadget 2 was the better movie. I’m guessing it was direct to DVD, but it was so much more faithful to the cartoon. On top of that the story was just so much better. French Stewart was a much better Inspecte Gadget than Matthew Broderick. Penny and Brain were saving the day. Even the gadgets looked better on the much smaller budget.
The second movie absolutely was a direct-to-video movie. One of Disney's better ones.
Man when I was a kid I loved the Inspector Gadget Cartoon. I still miss Don Adams RIP. When this movie came out I had my mom take me to see it in the theaters. TO THIS DAY…. I still apologize to her to taking me and sitting through this Trash movie. Even when I was 12 Years old. I knew this wasn’t good. But I say GOT DAMN Joely Fisher was Hot!
As an 80s baby, I don't think I've ever seen this movie. That's how off the radar this was for me even in the 90s as a movie fan.
The sequel was SO much better, funny enough.
Hi
20:36 The heart- boy! Use your heart...not your brain! -Daddy Yondu.
I remember I was so annoyed at this movie. I wanted a cool cyborg movie, instead we got this bumbling idiot with gadgets that made no sense.
Atleast in the cartoon the majority of his gadgets made sense for a cop and he was an entertaining idiot.
But in this movie he is not only annoying, but the majority of his gadgets seemed more like they tried to make him into a living gag machine. In what reality does a cop need a toothpaste hose or soap bubble fingers? The evil version of him was silly, but atleast his gadgets was cool.
The only gag i remember to this day that made me laugh my ass off was the Yahoo sign. That was some marketing that really worked since I still use my Yahoo mail account.
OMG I've been waiting aloooooong time for this movie to fall into your laps 😏. Let the bullshit ensue 😆
Danm Billy that was a great impression of Claw
That Was a Damn Great Impression Of Claw
Based on the amount of fondness people have for this movie in the comments, this should have been a Retro Review. This movie does not the deserve the "Bad Movie Roast", treatment...the sequel does.
Bad CGI, talking car, long dead IP, seeing Dr. Claw face.
It’s mind blowing to how the DT channel still only have under 300k subs. These guys are so AWESOME and HILARIOUS ! They deserve at least 1 million+ subs by now. SMH…
Never expected Bily to laugh so hard at that 15:10😂
I believe the inspector from pink panther would have been the best person to play inspector Gadget
Fun fact: Inspector Gadget was actually inspired by The Pink Panther films, and with a similar outfit, and personality. He originally had a mustache in the pilot before the studio behind the Pink Panther films felt it was copyright infringement. The filmmakers should've taken inspiration from those movies since they're the perfect tone for an Inspector Gadget movie.
The sequel is unironically better
Indeed it is. If at the least because it's closer to the cartoon.
@@InkAndPoet you got that right
Y'all should talk about the sequel, which is much closer to the cartoon.
Yeah, I remembered seeing it back in the day. & I seen a vid of Doug Walker & his brother talking about the film. And Rob was the 1 that said the spirit of IG lives moreso in the sequel than the 1st film.
I had no idea Inspector Gadget had a live action movie. I only knew of the cartoon.
There was even a sequel in 2003. It had a different cast and went straight to video.
Did you know that you can say "Go go Gadget waterskis" to the tune of TLC's "Waterfalls"?

I’ve been waiting for you guys to attack this movie, especially with Billy involved.😂😂😂😂
I liked the cartoon Inspector Gadget more though the film.
This adaptation is a personal punching-bag of mine. It's an anomaly. It gets every element of the original cartoon wrong in order to make it more conventional. And it still confuses me why Disney thought this cartoon deserved an adaptation to the big screen in the first place. Like, they had a dozen of their own properties and shows they could have adapted. They could have done the same thing with Darkwing Duck, maybe Gargoyles. But no, they got the rights to a DiC series produced in Canada.
This is what I was thinking 😂
That monkey booty call scream.😂 Must have got that feature installation from Rob Schneider's- The Animal- grade selection.
My childhood 😊.
Matthew Broderick is always the most awkward person
I can never tell if he's really good at playing awkward nerds or if he just is one 😆
I feel he was completely miscast. Inspector Gadget was far from being awkward or nerdy. He was always overly confident in himself but in the process was an idiot, thinking he's getting close to the case but overthinking everything. He's basically a comic relief Disney sidekick as the star. Matthew Broderick is far from doing that.
That's a lot of fish.
@@brandonspain12345 Say what you want about the direct-to-video sequel, but at least French Stewart was probably closer to who Gadget should be. Still not perfect, but at least he knows how to play a confident fool.

I do have memories of getting this film on vhs on christmas and watching it numerous times. I won't defened it as good but it's not the worst. Also, it's funny that sequal is a bit more faithful to the cartoon but is much worse than this one. They should have roasted that and george of the jungle 2 🤣 🤣.
Never understood why this was made. The cartoon had wrapped by the mid 80’s, and no one was clamoring for more. Also, this is not a property meant for live-action. It worked as a cartoon, and it worked quite well. But, there simply is no way a live-action film could ever hope to compete with the original. It’d be akin to doing a live-action Mickey Mouse or Looney Tunes movie. And yet, somehow, the Inspector Gadget movie got a DTV sequel.
Me whenever I see my cartoon crush…36:15. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Booooo, this was one of my favorites as a kid. The second movie was better, though😂😂😂
I loved it when i was a kid, its definitely a guilty pleasure movie
Of Course and I Only saw the movie in theaters with my friends and those were the old days
The sequel, in my opinion, is far more faithful adaptation. In a vacuum, maybe not so much. But compared to the first movie, the sequel ticks a lot more boxes.

Wow there's a part 2?!!
@@soulrebel6309 yes there is a part 2
@@lenindominguez1986 😂 never knew that
@@soulrebel6309 yup my friend
Nothing against Matthew Broderick or anything but why in the hell didn't they cast anyone else to play this part? Like this was late 90s or so, Jim Varney would have played a solid Inspector Gadget. Leslie Nielson, hell Cristopher Lloyd would have been good! Idk, it's just odd. It wouldn't have helped LOL this movie is a DCOM with half the budget and effort.
Loved this movie as a kid. My dad used to let me watch the cartoon. I don't think this was suppoed to be that great. It was aimed at children. Inspector Gadget 2 with French Stewart was actually more accurate to the OG cartoon.
The initial concept of this movie was going to be much darker - almost on the same level as The Mask with Jim Carrey. Disney insisted on producing a more toyetic kids movie. For example, the Batmobile would have made a cameo and there was an entire subplot involving household appliances being transformed by Scolex to having animalistic behaviors.
That last part sounds like it was refitted for that _G-Force_ movie, with the gerbil spies.
I watched this too much as a kid.
However, I will not rest until we get a Bad Movie Roast of the overlooked direct-to-video sequel…
Inspector Gadget 2
Ummm isn't the point of this Inspector Gadget is that he is new to this? He doesn't have confidence yet. It's not hard to criticize a movie without being like "well the cartoon...".
I would be interested in seeing the original longer cut which was almost 2 hours long, as maybe that would fix things
Probably would've flown better as a movie with better constructed scenes but here's the thing, you'd still have Dr. Claw's face shown, Gadget not being a bumbling moron like the show, and Penny still being underdeveloped. The only way to save this movie was to make a completely different movie.
When I saw this in theaters, my dad was unimpressed; I remember him saying "It feels like there was a lot of last-minute editing done to this." Looking back, I know exactly what he meant - it's like they deleted a bunch of scenes, then realized it made the movie too short, so they tried to cram them all back in as flashbacks and dream sequences to pad it back out.
Even though this Inspector Gadget movie just gives me laughs of HOW BAD this movie really is but with you guys roasting it, way beyond entertaining than ever. Go-go-gadget funny review. 😂
